The Same But Different
Pulling her close, he held her tight. "I promise I won't leave you."
She felt herself dissolving in his embrace. He pulled away looking into her eyes. "I love you. You know that right?"
"Yes," she sighed with contentment, "I do."
"They'll be here tomorrow." he whispered.
"I know." she said, "I know."
He stood on the stairs waiting for her permission. Eyes filling up with tears she nodded.
They could hear their city crumbling around them.
"Go," she whispered her eyes brimming over now. He made a step towards her.
"Go," she said again with more ferocity. He turned and ran up the stairs.
"Be safe." she called. He turned and looked and smiled a small sad smile knowing what she was really saying. One tear rolled down her face and he was gone. This had happened in a different place a different time.
But this time he never came back.
