It doesn't matter, but I don't understand him in the least.
Understanding your superior officers is not required, but it helps. I know nothing about him, not even his first name. He is Sir Weller, a man with no past, no joy, and brilliant technique with a sword.
I was fascinated by him as soon as I was placed under his command. I'm easy enough to understand. As the third son of a noble but impoverished family, there was little hope for me to do anything else but join Dai Shimaron's army. I miss my younger siblings and enjoy carousing with my fellow officers.
We don't know anything about Sir Weller. He doesn't talk, unless you speak to him directly, and something about his manner does not encourage conversation. He doesn't smile. I've only seen him smile once, right before he went to fight the Maoh of Shin Makoku. I am fairly sure he has some sort of grudge against that country.
The man must have some free time, and some sort of hobby with which to fill it. However, careful but polite observation has not disclosed what this hobby might be. He reads sometimes, if sword training is not available as an option, but he seems to take no pleasure in either action.
Sir Weller is a wizard with a sword. I've never been beaten so quickly as when I face him. It's strange about his duel with the Maoh- I know he was going easy on that boy to a ridiculous amount. If he can disarm me in a minute, Sir Weller could have killed that demon boy in his first stroke. But he didn't, despite his grudge against Shin Makoku.
Sir Weller doesn't drink. He's always tidy. He has no personal effects except for his sword. He doesn't ask anything of his men that he wouldn't do himself. He is an excellent superior officer all ways. However, he is not happy. I don't think he knows how to be.
There are too many missing pieces for me to understand Sir Weller. I don't think he's entirely human.
Author's note: I wrote this while I was trying to understand what Conrad was thinking while in Dai Shimaron. Then I realised that I had no idea what he was thinking, and this fic was born. Many thanks to Crimson1 for encouraging me to actually post something.
