"She drifted off to the warmth of the masses
and I woke up desiring to dream her
Some time ago, I thought of writing to her
that I never learned to elude the booby traps of love
I won't be sending ashes of roses
nor will I avoid any secret quickies
From that love like light music
Nothing shall free us
Nothing there is left
Nothing else…
Nothing else there is left"

Chapter 78:
Riding the Undercurrents
December 4th. A few minutes before 8 AM.
(Underground Command Room.)
[Yuuko]
A deep breath, a long exhalation, not inhaling for a few seconds. The void lingers, accompanied by the light rush of both heels and soles, of white coats and dark dresses. One final glance at the monitor of my laptop, a quick scan through what pop ups were highlighted, nothing is out of order, there are no errors in the system.
"Professor," Yashiro calls out softly by my side, giving a court nod when I gaze her way, "the preparations are completed. We can proceed with the meeting on your word."
"I see." I then scour the whole room, the complexion of those around me.
Banners to war, horns about to be blasted, smoke already within their eyes foretelling the blows soon to come. At long last, it is time to officially request the start of operations for the Project. For those who have stood since the start, like Isumi, or those who joined afterwards, like Radhabinod, it is the time to give back the change loaned from comrades long gone. To place their coin where it matters most, and win the long shot that it is the first victory in human history against the BETA. A tower of coins we have, from both those present and those who entrusted their shares to us. Even then, it is overshadowed by the Monument's shadow, wavering as the foundations threaten to slip further with nothing but the dismissive wave of a hand from HC.
"…Did we heard back from Daikuuji Corp?"
Yashiro shakes her head, shoulders sagging. "No, it seems their setbacks have not been resolved."
"Make a note to request an appointment with them in the short term."
Even if this serves as a bluff, I will need their expertise for when it is time to fine tune Model D. According to Shirogane, only due to Model D's specifications and superior capabilities was the Kashgar Raid successful. It will take time for America to accept my terms, time that should be used to lay down mines with what little the G-Sun Project bestowed us with.
…Speaking of. Licking my lips, folding my arms and sighing, I hunch closer to Yashiro and whisper. "Any news on his condition?"
A shiver, a shake of her head, both bunny ears falling down and down slowly as little snow pearls to the ground. Only that her complexion is already fully covered by the bountiful frost, paling and cold.
I see. So you're still somewhere in dreamland, huh.
Sharply returning myself upright, I clear my desk of clutter as the rest of the staff deals with the order to prepare the transmission. Curling, crushing a ball of paper and shooting it towards the trash bin, swaying, slamming a folder open, flickering through the pages to find the right one, and lightly hitting the keyboard with a fingertip as the OS lags a response to ready all the assets and diagrams, slowly chipping at my bottom lip.
"XO Kouzuki, please do not be so distressed," Motoko-nee says, slowly coming up to me, expression tight as she ruffles her hair. "All the material has been reviewed thoroughly, we're as prepared for this as we feasibly could."
"I see, as expected. Return to your position, Chief Researcher Kouzuki. The meeting is due to start any second now."
She sighs shortly, her eyes lingering on me for a second as I busy myself with the laptop. Barely whispering her agreement, she slides or slouches back to her seat. Everyone else takes a few odd seconds to finish their task, all standing ready in attention then. I look at the crew, who raises their hands and signals the green light.
One final deep breath, rolling my shoulders, cracking them, the coins on them. I give the nod, the bar bells toll. It is a second, half a breath, what it takes for this curtain to raise. The beeps of machinery, the signal coming to the monitors, the whispers right behind, the creeping cold that embraces my backside, the reminder of all prior shows.
This time, however, will be different. I have a wildcard up my sleeve… even if he's out cold at the moment, the fruits of what intel he brought should allow me to enact my part of the pact as expected. After all, I now hold no hope for an agreement with the Americans. As faint as the expectation was, there could be a possibility, one could make a case with all we have to offer. Yet, he has given me the forewarning, and thus, my hand now has shifted accordingly. It is all a matter of seeing… whether that 'accident' in the XM3 trials will also be required.
All the monitors gain life and light, the gazes of the guests now coming in, the regal and imposing offices flaunting the emblems and flags of their respective faction. Some hurry to their seats, others give faint nods in early salutation, a few dally with their drinks of choice. Two in particular are fully focused on my features, aimed my way as a killer arrow would. And in perfect rehearsal, all of us here present step forward and give a court bow.
"Good day, ladies and gentlemen. Yokohama Base thanks you for attending this meeting," I say, then raise back up, take further steps forward, take the spotlight's dare. "Now, let's not waste time with the introductions, I'm certain you already know who is who. Before anything, allow me to thank you all for the support shown to Alt IV in the last few months, despite all the pressure that, certainly, you too have endured. I assure you, your time and money have not been misplaced. Well then, as the Executive Director of the Fourth Project, allow me to begin the presentation of what advancements this base has produced in recent months."
Nods meet my words, further focus, tightened and compacted postures on the seats. The Prime Minister behind his desk and a retinue of advisors in nearby sofas await in complete neutrality under the Sun's Circle that sways in the light breeze of early morning. The five members of the UN Japan's High Council are seated in half a circle with sharpened expectation in a completely closed-off room in light cerulean with the large flag I also have hanging in my office, the representatives of the UN's Security Council are also seated in a similar manner though with a far more sober facade. Then, we also have the patrons from the Shogunate. All four Heads of the Regent Houses seated in their grand offices, windows showering rippling daylight on their backs, alongside their Shinpan retainers in protection, all of them gazing upon me with that same veiled threat and thin smile that never leaves their faces. Her Purpleness is no different in this occasion, despite the relaxed and soft demeanor she once more endows embers yet remain within her eyes, as could be said of some of her retainers that besides her stand.
Our little matters shall have to wait, however. I signal Pyatkh and she sends the images to them while I walk in front of the wall that's bathed with the same projected diagrams. Some of our guests look perplexed, others simply furrow their brows at the apparently unrelated data I've sent them. Truly, they do seem to be as lost as penguins in a desert. And poor penguins, they are in front of a sandstorm.
"Let's start with the key matter of this meeting," crossing my arms, standing upright and returning the spotlight's glare, the vast enmity of this theater. "As of today, Alternative IV has entered its last stage." A few people's shock was palpable, other's simply tensed their features. Slowly as a moving cloud, I pace in front of the wall, gaining a small smile for the spectators. "As a matter of fact, tonight I plan to activate the 00 Unit at long last. Yokohama Base is proud to announce that we are already making the necessary preparations for the eventual operations to come."
Halting my steps, I scan what within the monitors lies. Some shifted on their seats, looking expectantly at me. No whispers, full focus on myself this time. A captivated audience, albeit still judgmental.
Giving a minute bow, then I cross my arms, purposely looking away from them while busying a hand with a strand of hair, lightly nibbling an edge of my lower lip. "I do apologize for the lack of reports these last few months, however I finally had worked past the main operational problem we were facing, thus decided to wait until I had conclusive proof of my success before notifying this matter." A slow breath in, restoring the poker face, it's time to call and show my bet. "As the Vice Commander of Yokohama Base and the Director of the Fourth Project, allow me to briefly present you all with the recent developments that my research or its prior material has produced. With all of these together along the 00 Unit, I am confident to say that Alt IV is now able to officially begin its operations before next year, if the approval for an incursion to Sadogashima is given."
I look at all the monitors, gauging their reactions, their hands. A certain someone looks too appalled by the news, fingers shuffling through nothingness. The gazes of most of them, however, are filled with stars of delight and clouds of distrust, stuck between raising or folding. Tending towards the latter if I had to guess. It's understandable, my research has been stuck for many months. To hear me now saying I plan to take on a Hive most sound really farfetched to them, a valiant yet pointless death cry.
"Excuse, Vice Commander," the Head from the Takatsukasa family speaks, leaning slightly forward. "You speak of retaking Sadogashima, of completing the 00 Unit, however, what is the data you've sent about? This is in no way related to your project," he notes his displeasure through narrowed eyes, a raising chin. Meeting small nods of approval from a few seated by the PM, of some of his 'fellows', the imposing iron wall of the Imperials hesitates not in calling a bluff.
Most unlucky for you, I am not lying nor exaggerating in the slightest. Yet, you shall regret that opposition in due time. Spit out as much venom as you please, the chain does not only tugs in one direction. This time I won't be selling myself short on- No, focus, concentrate.
"What I've sent you is data regarding a few projects that have been completed in the last few hours and others that are close to reach their final testing phase. I know it might seem unrelated, yet all in due time," I state, giving the man a side glance then coughing and facing back to the wall with the diagrams. "All of what I'm about to show you has to remain confidential, after all. So, let's begin with the reports of what Alt. IV has produced in these last months. First of all, allow me to present to you a new operating system for our TSFs, the XM3."
Despite giving them only a summarized explanation, all of them are bewildered, to put it mildly, at the numbers and footage I'm showing. There is however something to note, the intensifying glare of Her Highness and her retainers as the test battle with Gekishins is shown. I assume, they recognize his patterns? So this world's Shirogane truly did pilot as recklessly as you do, huh. Tension overflows the one with lily hair, I believe the representative of the Amato House if my memory is not failing, before a small argument in whispers seem to start with the turquoise-haired retainer of Her Highness.
Once the brief summary ends and I answer some preliminary questions, Isumi steps forward and gives her report as the Captain of the Valkyries, noting the differences they felt at first, and a short explanation of all the new movements they could do with it once they had gotten used to the OS' quirks, all the while the respective footage plays. I do have to note the small delay, her fingers seeking to undo the formation, to break the stance in attention as her final opinion is requested.
"Despite being favorable, it is hard to ignore the strain the system could cause in our units," she says from her stomach, raising her eyes to face, to endure the entire theater. "It would require a detailed training methodology to not abuse the extra liberties and warn pilots not to attempt reckless maneuvers with their craft. However…" a momentary break of her gaze, veiling itself, persevering despite the ongoing downpour coming onto her, "our last trainings have proved that the XM3 can allow TSFs to perform patterns not available with our prior configuration. I believe that, if given the proper time to devise a doctrine based on it, the XM3 OS will bestow us with many advancements and boons never thought possible," she affirms, facing ever forward.
No further questions are requested of her, thus she bows and steps back. Taking her place, giving her a minute nod as we cross gazes, I cough and slowly proceed.
"As you can see, the research of Alt IV allowed me to create this OS. It was merely meant to be a test for what I had built at the moment, but never did I think these would be the results. The thorough testing of the prototype has taking its fair share of time, thus delaying this meeting and my reports," I give a small bow, signaling the crew to halt the projection on the wall. Walking, stepping forward, lunging forward, I steel my tone, raise a blade to the spotlight. "Alt IV has produced an incredible upgrade for our fleet of TSFs and, since I believe it to be a necessary addition to the A-01 STF, I request to the UN and the Empire to allow Yokohama Base to conduct a test run for the XM3 OS."
Eyes widen like kitties hearing thunders, smiles folding and fading to sobriety, hidden by hands as they whisper to one another. Before what lurks within the fog, before the vipers in the bog decide to lunge forth, I cough and cross my arms, pressing on through the wires and warnings.
"The ideal scenario I hope for would be to host the test with pilots from the frontlines or the high nobility against units stationed here in this base piloting Gekishins, as the one in the footage I showed you moments ago. I believe the XM3 is key to the success of the Sadogashima incursion, so I desire the STF at the least to be allowed to officially deploy with the OS on the missions that will come. Also, since the XM3 lacks any data in actual combat, I wish to test the difference in performance between our current OS and the XM3 in a hard stress test, one could say."
As much as I don't care about following regulations to a T, I can't just sortie the Valkyries in an official mission with the XM3 without notifying it to the UN's HQ. If they notice a difference with the data link, it would bring me a lot of unnecessary bureaucratic problems. The bait is enticing enough, I doubt they'd fold on this offer.
"I think it's clear this is something we need to roll out ASAP," a gray-haired representative of the EU thus says. "If the intel is to be believed, then adopting the OS would equal not only a boost to the culling operations' rate of success but also possibly lower casualties in both the Eurofront and the Suez Canal frontlines. At the least, I concur it warrants consideration."
"Now, let's not be hasty," the Prime Minister speaks up this time, closing his eyes while stroking his thin beard. "While the numbers are indeed impressing, they are in the end just that. Numbers of an untested OS obtained in an isolated testing phase. I do not think it wise to pull valuable pilots from the frontlines for such a test. And while important, I believe Yokohama Base has more pressing matters than the testing of a new OS. We still have not heard a thing about the 00 Unit or its estimated performance. On that hangs the approval for the request of an incursion to Sadogashima, Vice Commander," he finishes, narrowing his eyes, interlocked fingers retreating closer to his chest, hiding yet revealing his hand. Huh, so that's where you stand…
"Kurechika-dono," Her Purpleness softly speaks, slowly entwining her fingers together, brandishing a small smile, "I believe all those gathered here would gain a great benefit from supporting the notion forwarded by the Vice Commander," eyes focusing back to me, to the monitor showing me perhaps, her stare lingers, I return a faint nod while rolling a strand of hair on a finger. She slowly continues. "If the IJA could adopt the XM3, it certainly would aid the survival rate of our troops, letting our soldiers protect our shores more efficiently. And that's without taking into account the possible boons the OS could provide to the war at large. The data provided by the A-01 STF bequeaths bountiful proof of its potential, wouldn't you agree?" She asks, never losing the small smile, the softspoken tone.
Sakaki rearranges his glasses, his throat constricting as if swallowing a sigh. "Your Highness, according to the reports, the TSF's joints wear out much more faster with the use of this OS. We are barely keeping up with the demand of spare parts, so even if this OS would allow us to attain a higher performance, it would come attached with a much higher maintenance cost making the adoption moot since our units would still be out of commission, stuck in already filled maintenance bays." Taking a pause, leaning back on his chair, the wave, that dismissive wave of a hand as his eyes close. "We also cannot ignore that it would take a significant amount of time for our surface pilots to learn how to make the most out of this OS. Furthermore, this meeting was supposed to-."
"If you excuse me, Prime Minister," I address him, smiling a bit, picking the edge of a card to drop, "Yokohama Base has developed a new simulator unit to aid both experienced pilots and fresh cadets to adapt to the XM3," I state, and am followed by more tension, whispers, more kitties and thunders, more Yashiros in front of carrots. A small groan, a low flap of the bunny ears, she looks away and I almost chuckle. A fast breath in, coughing into a hand restores my composure. "We also have developed a few programs that could be used in the training of future cadets more efficiently. Pyatkh, Yashiro."
Both nod and send the next batch of intel, the little sims' performance. And this time, all of them are surprised. Except for the members of our HC, of course. A preliminary explanation from myself, burrowing terminology from your little odd reports, followed by Isumi's thoughts on the machines, despite once more almost showing some manner of dejection, blinking fast and looking elsewhere as she details the results the STF has procured thus far. It all causes further silence, an echo in the cave. And while it is pleasant to bewitch an audience in such a manner, utter absence of sounds is not what I expected. A few whispers, some reread the intel forwarded, a few garbed in blue allow fissures to break the mask of composure they endowed. Clay falling to dust, the first sparks finally raise forth.
"XO Kouzuki, how and when did you devise such advanced machines?" Another one from the EU members of the Security Council repines, a hand sending what little hair fell on his forehead backwards. A look of utter bafflement at the data of the consoles, a slight frown my way for said same reason.
To think this entertainment hardware would turn into such a valuable tool. And they haven't seen it in action with their own eyes yet. If the Valkyries' performance is flooring them, I can't wait to see how they'll react to your-
…
Well, assuming you ever decide to wake up, that is.
Sharply inhaling, crossing my arms and clawing at my elbows, I return the harsh and tight gaze for only a moment. "That is my secret, as it is tied to my research. As I've been saying, I tried to produce results away from the 00 Unit while I was stuck, these are merely the results of me getting out of my 'researcher's block', you'd understand. While I do know it is quite fair for you all to be taken aback, I believe this is nothing but the baseline of what boons the project should give as results, after all the support and funds you have graced it with," I say, giving a smile, a faint bow to ease the rising tide.
Upon their inquisitive stares and further queries, I again briefly explain to them the functions of the MMTS and the WMTS, retelling the small speeches Shirogane had done to convince me of the usage of the games for training recruits. Morooka joins in, giving his own spin amidst a question, perhaps something you had told him during the interrogation, easing the stream, calming the tide, both those in the Security Council and the Empire's HC lower their banners and cease the questions.
"So with these machines to aid Instructors, I assure you that the adoption of the XM3 will proceed smoothly. And we may gain many benefits from using the sims to train cadets with all of the other programs we have developed for them, if there is interest in said functions. Of course, if any of you has an idea to develop another training program I didn't think of, I'm more than willing to hear you out later."
"Vice Commander, if I may," the Head of the Ikaruga House speaks up, annoyingly slow, with that trademarked thin smile never wavering, "I cannot help but to notice that, in the documentation thus provided, these inventions are recognized as Imperial tech yet the patent belongs to the UN. Could you cast some clarity to the motives behind this arrangement?" He asks, stirring the storm, opening a gateway to thunders.
Sighing short, brushing my bangs to hide the minute squinting of my eyes, I stare back to the disquiet within the audience. "Because while they were developed with Japanese parts and machinery, the funds and test personnel belonged to the UN, and through their development we used resources and intel belonging to my research for the completion of the units. Thus, the machines fall under UN jurisdiction even if they were made with Japanese tech," I state, fluidly and not faltering at the glint of blades garbed in red, at the minute cracks in those in blue. Not like I can let them know the HC took them from Shirogane, that would spill all the mess the CCSE brought us out in the open. "Do not worry, my ideal plan would be to give the Empire a year of exclusive use under a trial stage, if you agreed to cooperate in their mass production and there is interest in what these sims can accomplish. As much as I'd like to make more of these, we don't have the time nor the hands for it." This will be a nice gift for you all, if you take my side. My neck isn't so stiff to not bow a bit when it benefits me, I do want them to stop being so hostile towards the UN after all. Hopefully with this, you can all start to-
"Excuse me," the American representative of the Security Council spoke up, breaking my inner monologue with the loudness, the booming of a smacking hand onto a desk, "if the machines belong to the UN, why do you suggest to give the Empire the machine's exclusive use and producing rights without first doing a bidding for their licensing rights? The US would be more than willing to mass produce the simulators, and regardless of their usage for the new OS I believe the technology of these sims holds merit on their own," he nods my way, firm as a rock, clear as dawn. Huh, unexpected but not unwelcome. "We have the industries to quickly make thousands of these in a matter of weeks, going by their schematics. We could arrange a test run in many bases on our country and in South America with ease to boot," stopping to look at his peers seated besides him, gaze sturdy and not faltering, "I believe the rest of you all are in agreement that we are the most-"
"With all due respect, sir," Ikaruga interrupts, coldly and calmly, without even changing his blank expression, "these machines are a Japanese invention. Thus, it is only natural that they should be tested where they were created. There is no need to perform a bidding, as I'm certain the rest of the UN would rather have the machines tested and delivered in a timely manner as opposed to the coming bureaucracy that would delay their adoption should a bidding be required." The American glares at the screen, probably at Ikaruga, the other members of the Council and HC tighten their expressions, shift in their seats while looking away, eyelids descend and call curtains to their intentions. Ugh… This always happens. "I do, however, think that the Empire should have a percentage of ownership over them, albeit a small one, due to its contribution to their creation. My fellows, I believe a mere 4% isn't much to ask? What do you think?" The other leaders of the Regent Houses compact in their seats, some members of the HC also groan as they grasp their chins, share whispers.
A small argument ensues, a desire to host a bidding over proper UN channels on one side being met in firm opposition from the proposal to hasten the production of the units by granting the Empire the production rights, along a small percentage of the earnings as Ikaruga proposed. This isn't unexpected, but it's still bothersome. Shirogane did want to give the Empire a small percentage according to Morooka, and he did try to make that happen during his negotiations along Mitsuko-nee, but the UN's Undersecretary came with the news that the UN wants total ownership over the consoles. Even I would have it hard to give them a slice of this cake, I can't waste my favors on this. Furthermore, this is only a small detour, another piece forward. Allowing animosity to brew over this when we haven't even gotten to the actual talks of Sadogashima will only make the negotiation go south.
"Your attention, please," upon hearing Her Purpleness' voice, they all quiet down. She coughs, a simple nod before speaking. "While I understand my fellows' wishes, I believe it fair for us to not perceive any monetary gain from the new simulator units. Let this be a show of goodwill from the Empire to the UN, to prove to all of you we are more than willing to start contributing to the war efforts." A sharpened gaze, fire seems to be about to roar out of her. Yet, she gives the cameras a nod, the silk restored to both features and tone. "Representatives, I do not wish to keep pushing our burdens onto the US. We have already asked much from your nation during this year. Certain I am that you are most upset at how the XFJ Project turned out, and at the words some of my fellows spoke during that time. Please, allow us to shoulder this endeavor. The Empire of Japan will deliver these simulators to the UN, and we shall perform their test run to correct any possible defects they may have, or to improve them with the data we gain in this year. We will share all that we obtain from the testing of course, and we shall bequeath the UN a polished product according to the standards they require. Please allow the Empire to prove its worth to you all, as the host nation of the Project it is our duty, a duty we shall take in pride. Kurechika-dono, could you perhaps arrange a meeting with the heads of our industries? I believe we should all have a talk at large some other time, if there is interest for the sims."
The Prime Minister agrees, not wanting to oppose her this time. The representatives also quiet down, knowing that refusing the Shogun would mean getting into a lot of trouble. I didn't choose this day to reveal these things on a whim, nobody would want to start an argument when Alt IV has entered its final stage. And as expected, now that she is vying to make the test run a reality there is a small shield covering me this time. The UN representatives give some more compliments to the consoles, giving their agreement to see their worth at a latter date yet without tying it to the XM3, as I had expected.
"Ahem…" Let's take this tide to calmer waters before they start bickering again, those tense features in the IRG monitors won't remain underwater for long. "Now, as you all already know, part of the XFJ Project has been assigned to Yokohama Base." A few more raised brows, a few stares losing luster and interests. "I now would like to inform you that the railgun has reached its testing phase," and now, tension and widening eyes again fill the audience, surprise at the twist of scenery in the play, at me raising over my own call.
I signal Pyatkh once again, the data is sent to them. Her Purpleness seems pleased, and the people from the UN cannot hide their shock despite attempting to do so. Hide your lips all you want, the quick flicker of their eyes between each other and their laptop's screens can only mean one thing. However, the four Heads and Sakaki seem to be intently devouring the data, despite the echo of unsheathing coming from the sobered expressions in those monitors.
"Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present to you the Test Type-01X EML-Railgun. Allow me to explain the differences briefly as you read through the documentation," I say, pacing closer to the wall where the diagrams are projected. Coughing, taking a moment to ascertain they were all ready and in attention, basking in the murmur of the audience, I begin the explanation. "When compared to the standard railgun, the Test Type-01X model was shrunk in size due to the change in its ammunition. Now it can carry seven hundred payloads of 90mm ammo. However, as you can see," I wave to the wall, the diagram shifts, their lips and cheeks contract while mine relax into an honest smile, "its power has barely been affected. I am proud to announce we are close to finishing its first working prototype, there are only some small touches left that are being handed as of now by the crew. I would like to test it as soon as possible, in live combat of course. When there is another BETA incursion from Sadogashima, I ask you to allow me to deploy the A-01 STF with the weapon in support," I state, staring straight ahead. This time, all the five Heads and Sakaki agree to it without any arguments, the HC's members also approve the notion timely.
"Excuse me." Another representative, I think from France going by her accent, speaks up as her eyes seem to narrow, focusing and strengthening the stream coming from within. "When and how was this weapon built? I was under the impression the original model was destroyed in Kamchatka a few months ago."
"I suppose I could show you the details," I cross my arms, looking at Pyatkh once more. The dates and progression of the railgun's development are sent to all of them, a small concession in truth. "As you can see, the UN accepted to cooperate with the Empire in this mutual endeavor. Special thanks should be given to 1st Lt Takamura of the Royal Guard, who pushed for this joint project to be a reality and has been giving the Alt IV Research Team many good results in the short time she has been assigned to my base."
I don't like giving free praise like this, but mentioning the IRG will please the nationalists present here. And she did give me better results than I expected, with her help to Tamase and the rest of the squad during their trainings. For Marimo to allow her presence, it means she is capable enough. It looks like your little hunch was proven correct, Shirogane. She did a fine job as a supporting teacher thus far.
Coughing, pacing to a side, I continue. "Having access to its black box, we were able to build a working prototype much faster than before thanks to the data produced during the XFJ Project. Sadly, we didn't have the resources to rebuild it as it used to be, so compromises had to be made as you can see in page seven, where all the comparisons with the first prototype are. Due to a certain research on my end, the process could be streamlined and with the full cooperation from 1st Lt Takamura the production of parts found little to no setbacks or delays."
"Might I ask if the weapon is also under a UN patent?" Takatsukasa inquires, leaning forward.
"Considering that both parties were involved in this, the EML-Railgun is a shared property of the UN and the Empire," I retort immediately, crossing my arms.
I don't want to deal with any more nonsense, so giving them 40% of the royalties is not such a big deal. The UN also doesn't want to keep antagonizing the nobility for such small matters, that's why they accepted this arrangement. I'm sure they would like to gain access to the railgun, and if they can mend their relations with the Empire while they're at it, it's killing two birds with one stone. Even if embers remain buried within the ashes, all it takes is a small spark to cleanse all the tension in-
"Takeru-san said… he had doubts about you, about an incident that would happen soon. That's why he didn't want to wake up."
…
"So would the prototype be ready for testing as of now?" Sakaki inquires, untying the chains that threatened to choke me.
Coughing, they refuse to break away, bending and twisting and coiling over my stomach instead. Taking a moment to swipe my tongue within my mouth, cleaning the bad taste, I nod as I look back at the monitors. "It should be ready for its first stress test this afternoon, if nothing out of order occurs. And if we confirm it works as it should, I would like for it to go through the necessary bureaucratic channels as fast as possible, to allow for its deployment during an eventual incursion into Sadogashima. And as opposed to its prior location, we have here a way to quickly recharge its most vital energy source." They all narrow their eyes, knowing I'm talking about the Reactor. We really would benefit from being able to extract more ODL from it. Maybe Shirogane was right, we should try to capture Sadogashima's Reactor too. "As you can see, there are many advancements made in the recent months. Which is why I believe there is no better time to begin the formal operations of the project."
They all again sink in whispers, shrouded in fog. Requesting another opinion on the subject, Radhabinod steps up and gives his impressions about the weapon, about how he sees it could change the tide of a battle when used wisely, his own posture towards the requested assault. Questions are answered and the representatives agree that the weapon is promising, but that in their opinion the Mk. 57 of the EU is the more versatile weapon. They do, however, agree that its destructive power seems to be a bit above it, since many Mk. 57s would need to use all of its 120mm ammo to dispatch such a large number of Destroyer-Class as the railgun could, even if it has better range and it still had its 205mm remaining.
In the end, each weapon has its own advantages. The railgun is better fit for a defensive role, so its perfect for our coastal defense strategies, or for a machine like the XG. Unless we managed to make a bigger, sturdier TSF who could move with it without losing speed. On the other hand, the Mk. 57's versatility and lightness make it the obvious choice for culling operations, where the railgun's weight and the need to remain stationary when firing it could endanger the mission's success and the pilot's life. It's also much easier to mass produce. However, thanks to having the Reactor here, we might be able to use its spoils to increase the barrel life of the railgun. The Mk. 57 does not belong to the UN though, so they might want to push for it to have their own weapon, since the EU refuses to share the licensing rights of their new gun. Oh well, it's done and that's what matters. Now I can focus on making the ones for the XGs. Mitsuko-nee will handle the negotiations, and I rather focus on polishing the model we have built already for what is to come.
"Now then, let's move onto the next report. As you could see during the footage beforehand, the Gekishin used during the trial employed far more dexterity than what baseline we have as of now. However, that was not only due to the XM3," I pace to the wall, new diagrams flash onto it, my shadow obscuring some of them. "A certain realization brought these ideas to me, so I would like to present you all the new parts we have developed for the F-4 and F-15 alongside a brand new stealth system, as well as the results we gained with these and the Type-00C using the XM3." The hammer ain't stopping anytime soon, get used to it folks. Now that I got my game on, there won't be any breaks for a while.
To say they were surprised is an understatement. Even Her Purpleness was shocked at the performance of the Kagerou Shirogane piloted during Niigata, even if it was formally during a test run. Of course, the HC and all the representatives lost their minds at the intel we gained during the runs the Blood Squadron has been doing with the modified Gekishins based on Shirogane's Shin Gekishin, and the Prime Minister and the four Heads simply didn't believe it as they all started discussing what was shown to them with those nearby.
It is understandable, however. Between the new parts and the XM3, the Gekishin obtained better numbers than our base Kagerou, and the Kagerou was almost on par the Shiranui, even though Shirogane's F-15 was still using prototype parts back then. Of course, the real surprise came with the results the Valkyries obtained with the Type-00C through the XM3. Simply put, the Type-00C could stand toe to toe with the Berkut or the Raptor, going by the numbers without the stealth. And while testing is still necessary, I believe that with the stealth however it should have an an edge over a Berkut in the hands of a skilled pilot. Before, it would be an uphill match dependent on both pilot's skill. With the XM3 and stealth capabilities, however, the Type-00C would have the clear advantage.
And if only you would wake up, these reports would be thrashed in a heartbeat if they demanded more out of us.
Cleansing my throat, enduring the cackle of the heavy chains, I step forward, face them once more. "I'm sure you all realized this by now, but with these parts and the XM3 we have a simple and economic way of enhancing the worldwide frontline. Certainly, all the Strike Eagles would welcome some of these parts, and even if they didn't, the XM3 by itself should be a giant boost in performance as you can see with the limited data we gained through our tests. The same for all the F-4 variations that are still in use in the African front. That's without taking into account the stealth capabilities we could give them too, if you allow us to proceed with a test run and you find the results satisfactory."
"Forgive me for doubting you, Vice Commander," the American raises his voice once more, pinching his nose as he shakes his head, "but you say you could best the Raptor? The battlefield dominator, the TSF that has yet to be defeated? I find it hard to believe. And while it is incredible on its own, I don't think this stealth system can compare to that of the Raptor. Also, while it seems promising, the XM3 has not enough hard data yet. Arranging a trial run seems rushed to me at this point."
"Is that so? For me, it is imperative to bolster the STF's capabilities to allow the 00 Unit to proceed with its intended objective. I must insist on this matter, unless, of course, my prior request for the XG line is accepted."
He frowns, shaking his head as he sighs. "I do not think the US would be willing to fork over the Hi-MAERF Project for any of your current offerings, XO. While impressive, none of these advancements match American tech already available."
Tch… These proud Americans can't accept so easily that someone made something better than them. Well, I'll just have to prove it to them. You're gonna beg for it, be sure of that.
"Of course the stealth system doesn't compare, it is in the earliest stages of its life." And I saved my best pieces of tech for myself. "But considering all the setbacks the Lightning II's production is suffering, I'm certain the Eurofront would be interested on these spoils Alt IV has created, even if only on the sensors, antennas and chaff missiles. All of the tech devised thus far along the XM3 is in need of actual hard data to back their performance, that's why I'm asking to perform an official test run. However, if the UN doesn't think they're worth it, I won't waste your time any further. The licensing rights can go to the Empire, if there is any interest."
"But of course, I believe such advancements would be welcomed by our industries," Her Highness follows up on my trail, nodding in clarity. "All of us are in agreement on this notion?" She asks, her retainers agree immediately and all four Heads also do in unison, a small delay coming from the PM and his advisors.
"Now wait a second!" The French woman shouts as she slams the desk, her cascading hair flowing to a side due to the haste of the movement that also sends her mug to meet the floor. "If the US doesn't have a need for the parts that's on them, but at the very least I assure you that France will be more than willing to make a bid for them."
"In the Queen's name, I can confirm that Britain would also be interested in acquiring this stealth system and new OS," the small British woman affirms immediately after, a faint and small nod afterwards.
And with that, the representatives start arguing among themselves again, with Mitsuko-nee and the other members of our HC trying to calm them down, only for the four Heads to interject, saying the Empire should have exclusive access to the parts too. Well, at least the discord should open a few gaps for me to strike at.
Of course America doesn't want another stealth system to exist. If they are the only ones who produce stealth tech, they can control how powerful the other nations' stealth capabilities are. So long as everything else is under the Raptor's level, they can always win against another army of TSFs. And if the F-22A is ever beaten… They have another one hidden behind the curtain. Not that I want to see an F-23 getting deployed. I do not want to see the American Special Force getting involved in this theater, thank you very much. However, if it is to seal the patent under their own shelves, they'll try and wrestle the parts to their hands. While perhaps cooperation with them could happen, to mix and match our stealth systems and doctrines side by side, I highly doubt such an arrangement can happen. Those who support a TSF-centric doctrine are in league with Prominence, after all. I rather not mingle with them more than necessary, or with the ripples they come attached with. I rather not have to resort to any 'Hail Mary' tactics, if possible.
"I believe you can all negotiate on your own at a latter date," Mitsuko-nee cuts in the argument of the Security Council's representatives, who sigh and look away from each other, echoes of dissidence still rumbling in their tight postures and gestures. She crosses her legs and hands before continuing. "Considering the Empire already has expressed their desire to acquire the license, I believe all of us would benefit from allowing Yokohama to hold this test run. Both for these parts, the small simulators, and the XM3. It would clear all the doubts we currently have, and grant the STF a most needed edge for the Sadogashima mission."
"Now, let's not get ahead of ourselves," the Prime Minister again protests, giving small little hits to the wood before pushing his glasses up. "The goal of this meeting is discussing the state of Alt IV and whether or not it's ready to begin its operations before we commit to a mission on Sadogashima, not to be making bids over new pieces of tech. Vice Commander Kouzuki," interlocking his fingers, what ailing venoms do lurk behind his eyes, enough to pale his complexion, the grip of shade over it, "could you proceed to give us the report on the 00 Unit? On that machine's performance hinges the success of the project, after all."
"…Well, if you insist. Just let me clarify something. All I've shown you thus far is deeply tied with Alt IV's success. As I said before, I plan on taking on the 21st Hive before the end of the year so it's in my best interest to improve our firepower as much as the timeline allows. So by presenting the XM3 and all the other developments that my team has produced, I was giving you all an idea of what cards are available to us. I would like to avoid another Swaraj from happening under my command, you'd understand," I spit out in sincere poison, glaring, threatening. The men and women from the UN grimace but nod at my words, the older ones from the four Heads do so too, Her Highness sighs as she slumps in slow dejection. Sigh… Glad we can all agree in that, at least. "But if you're so impatient, let's cut to the chase. First, these are the numbers of the A-01 STF before and after the XM3 and their change to the Type-00C. This is the current power of Alt IV's vanguard." Pyatkh and Yashiro send the data, with some footage of their trainings playing behind me as I slowly pace to and fro. "Now, as you all know, for security measures I can't show you the machine or detailed data about it, but here is the report about the 00 Unit's expected performance once fully tuned."
I nod, Yashiro fiddles with the keyboard, filing the comparison of the expected performance between the revamped 00 Unit and the old prototype, though it still is only the bare minimal intel. Motoko-nee proceeds to take the spotlight, detailing some of the reworkings she had to tackle, some of the advancements she has produced in the last month. Tying this to the parallel work of the feedback interface, as we did when designing the auto-translator for the datalink structure, allows her to deflect most questions by keeping things professional and using technical terms, buzzwords, and the usual annoying manner of jokes she tends to do, despite the seriousness required.
She takes a step back once she's done, giving me a nod, a faint smile. I merely return the nod, feeling the air seeping down my throat, fighting the grip of the chains, the rocking of the coins. "As the report should have indicated, I will make the 00 Unit perform various tests in due time to evaluate its capabilities and modify the planning accordingly. Which is why I would like to acquire the XG line as soon as possible. I shall be updating you with the clear numbers after it's activated and running. While we do have other means to perform the mission, I believe the XG to be the best machine we have at our disposal. I will insist on the transfer of the Hi-MAERF Project to Alt IV command until the last possible moment. I also would like to inform you I would like to capture the Sadogashima Hive without completely destroying its core, if possible. Considering how vital the resources we could extract from it are, I believe we should try to push for its capture. Of course, the mission's success comes first, but I would like to have another core to further push my research forward."
As I finish speaking, the members of the HC started discussing about how feasible it would be to capture a 'core' and then the Shogun asked the American about the possible terms of the transfer, and the man responded, fuming a barrage out and very harshly, that there were no plans to hand over the XGs. This caused the four Heads and the other representatives to start arguing, this time more heatedly, and my mention of instead choosing to rely on Imperial tech through the prior project handed to Daikuuji Corp only added fuel to the pyre, rising to cover all the offices in thick smoke, shrouding it all in combustion. In pressure towards the US' representative, receiver of more volleys than he can safely deflect with mere words without risking a slip up. Sadly, Mitsuko-nee and Her Purpleness placated them before things got out of control, before the cracks in the facade gave away.
Thanks to this, though, now I know where everybody stands, which color they hoist behind the forced neutrality. I clear my throat as they start to calm down, bringing the attention to me.
"Since it's possible that the XG line is not transferred to us, I began to take my measures to make sure we use the 00 Unit's capabilities to it's fullest. If the XG does not come to us, we have plans to not only redouble our efforts alongside Daikuuji Corp but to also develop a new program to link the 00 Unit to the XM3. This is only the theoretical data, but allow me to show you all… the IST," I turn around as I whisper, narrowing my brows and holding my breath captive.
"May I ask what is the acronym meant to represent?" A member of the HC asks.
"Sadly, it'll have to remain secret for the time being," I immediately counter, narrowing my eyes, pursing my lips and gagging on nothingness.
No way in hell I'll say out loud what it stands for. 'Instant Stunt Transfer', Shirogane what were you smoking when you thought about this name? Sigh… I thought he was kidding when he asked me if it would be possible for the 00 Unit to control more than an XG at a time, but I was not expecting you to suddenly want to have it command a squad on its own.
Pacing again over the edges of the spotlight, breathing in to dispel the small displeasure, I slowly continue. "Think of this protocol as a revamped and enhanced Slave Mode for our units. As you all know, the 00 Unit is a machine with unparalleled processing power. Someone on the base suggested me the idea of improving our AI and asked if it was possible to somehow reliably use Slave Mode on the frontlines one time. And that idea is the basis of this protocol. What the IST does is allow the 00 Unit to link itself with the data that's shared through the XM3's datalink to control a group of TSFs, pinpointing the best possible movements and actions for each of them in real time. According to my calculations, the 00 Unit is more than capable of controlling the XG line of the Hi-MAERF Project, so a group of TSFs shouldn't pose a problem to it. Through the IST, however, it could simultaneously control an XG and, let's say, a squad of TSFs by itself due to the enhancement of the mainframe required for the usage of the XM3. Using all the accumulated data of our best pilots at the same time, it could use the TSF under its control on a level on par with one of our ace pilots while sharing said data through the link to the pilots escorting it," I retell in my pacing, simply flowing down the river, causing them all to shift and whisper, ponder and wonder as if seeing fire or open sea for the first time.
…I still don't know how do you come up with this stuff, but I'll be damned. If this does work out and we gain access to the XG, there will be little to nothing getting in our way. All I need is… well, for you to wake up and be safe, first of all.
"Vice Commander, this is a real possibility? The 00 Unit can… control a Squad of TSF and make them perform equally to a piloted Squad?" The American's voice was almost dry as Yashiro's when she eventually regained consciousness, yet not pale and cracked as she was, like an empty patch of sand.
Everybody else was simply too shocked to speak up. This is on a completely different level to our current AI, who can only replicate the movements its loaded with, and even then it lacks the quick thinking and reaction of a pilot. Who would have thought that mock battle with the Valkyries back in October would end up spawning this? Honestly Shirogane, you scare me sometimes. So stop daydreaming already… and come back to me. We have a lot of work to do, don't we? I even have good news to give this time.
Sighing, ruffling my hair, I then nod. "Yes, though I still need to test the protocol to see the extent of its usefulness, whether it is feasible to employ in live combat. What I'm saying is, we might not need to waste more human lives on the battlefield if this becomes a reality. With the XG and a capable fleet of TSFs at its escorts, the 00 Unit can probably recapture a Hive by itself if we drive it to its full capabilities. Of course, we still need to support it with artillery and some strike forces to clean the Laser-Classes, but we could finally start retaking Hives without risking the necks of our ace pilots on orbital dives. This is the reason why I wish to insist for the Hi-MAERF Project to be transferred to Alt IV command."
I look up, extend my arms in half a circle while taking perhaps a rather dramatic pose, flashing a daring smirk to the spotlight, the storm and thunders that block my way.
"Simply imagine what the 00 Unit could produce with both the XG and the IST working at the same time. Yokohama Base has the XM3, the simulators, the railgun and a few things more to negotiate for the approval. The sooner we test this, the better results Alt IV will produce." As the representatives were about to speak up, I raise my hand, a single finger that waves to silence them as I take a step back, and another, before folding my arms and freezing my expression. "But let's not get ahead of ourselves, I'm sure you all need time to consult this in your respective offices. With this, my report is finished. So, allow me to ask you once more, I wish you all to give me the authorization to perform an official test run for the adoption of the XM3 and the new parts of the F-4 and F-15 as soon as possible. Also, besides this matter, I confirm we at Yokohama are ready to perform an incursion to the 21th Hive by the 24th of December at the earliest. Thus, as the Director of the Project, I request the agreement for us to proceed with the mission and the required preparations."
I say, never lifting my eyes off the monitors, not even blinking as I leave the silence hanging. Some of them start whispering with the assistants they had with them, others drink and remain silent, all look away from the monitor.
"My fellows," Ikaruga speaks up first, drawing first blood as he tends to prefer, "I believe it's in our best interest to allow a test run to occur. If the Hi-MAERF Project is of such importance, we should do all in our hands to allow Yokohama Base to forward a compelling appeal. I myself am also very interested in the stealth tech they have produced. It is clear we have at our disposal a way to become one of the strongest armies in the world with these advancements."
A few of the representatives didn't like that comment. Of course, we do not have a positive image, and us becoming 'stronger' might sound as if we were going to start doing whatever we wanted again, ruling by royal decrees like during 1999. I wonder, what do you think of those days, Shirogane? If you served under Her Purpleness in this world, as Yashiro seemed to confirm, what reasoning did you have? Your actions thus far are the opposite from those that squadron performed up until Lucifer. You wouldn't… be thinking on leaving to her side, are you?
The American speaks up, rebuking Ikaruga, saying we should focus on first delivering results and cooperating with the UN instead of having delusions of grandeur, slicing the performance of the parts and OS with the sheer edge of his wording of choice. While I sigh and shake my head, the man and the Head of the Saionji start arguing. The young man states the Japanese parts could make our Type-00 reach a greater performance to that of the Raptor. Ikaruga adds in complete sobriety and stillness that no one can deny that the technology is Imperial, even if it's under the UN, and that the Empire should have priority in its adoption over the other armies, to better support Alt IV of course, for no other motive than that, by the Heavens no. The Shogun has to raise her voice to pacify the argument that almost spirals into shouting.
If only they knew most of this comes from the head of someone who comes from another world, and they haven't seen the Shin or the new weapons yet. I'd like you to present those on your own, to gain the well deserved credit you've earned. Little I can do if dreaming is more appealing, now can I?
"Ikaruga-sama," Sakaki speaks as silence is achieved, not losing the clashing waves within his eyes, still unwilling to unfold his cards, "the representative was clear. They have no intentions to trade the project and are not interested in the technology developed at Yokohama. While the others might be inclined to acquire the license, it is most foolish to think that we could be on par with the other armies when we're struggling to procure our MDF with Shiranuis. Debating such topics on this occasion is most foolish, when said matters belong behind curtains. We should focus our discussion on how accurate the given numbers are, and how they could enhance the performance of the 00 Unit compared to what's available now. I would like to see the 00 Unit performing a few tests with our current tech before committing my agreement to these test runs," he states, again tapping his glasses, casting a sideglance my way. Some men on the HC nod along some retainers of the IRG.
"Kurechika-dono, it is most foolish to oppose the development of Imperial technology," Ikaruga retorts, finally losing the smile. "If these inventions make their way to the worldwide frontline, much honor will that earn our nation. The Vice Commander was a member of the Imperial Research Institute, and she's the one behind all of this, after all," he says, nodding my way, and sadly I must return the courtesy. Of course he mentions I was on the IRI. Because that is what allowed me to be here, to have gotten this far, sure. Resisting the urge to roll my eyes, I instead curl a strand of hair as the man joins his hands and leans forward, gaining a larger, almost vain smile to his features bathed in daylight. "Looking forward, I believe the Empire can reap many spoils from cooperating with the UN in such crucial developments. Think of all our nation could gain from this. This is a one in a lifetime chance to regain our footing in the world, to prove to the UN that we are more than capable of becoming the vanguard of the Far East Front, a promise that seemed to have been lost after the rueful events that led to the Invasion. I see no reason for you to oppose the notion to support the XO's requests," he calmly says, as usual, despite the frozen shards which sharpen upon the monitors, the blizzard that follows from the retainers by him standing.
Shaking his head, once more he taps his glasses. "While what you've said is true, this isn't the time or the place to-"
"Excuse me," Her Purpleness stops them once more, this time beginning to frown, "I do agree it is foolish to be making bold plans for the future on this meeting. However, this is indeed a prime chance to prove our humble nation's worth to the world. Both with the success of Alt IV and the licensing of this technology, we can finally start to return all the favors we have received since the project was assigned to the Empire, since the invasion happened. I believe all of us want the A-01 STF to be as powerful as it can be. Them failing in their mission is something no one herein present wishes for, I'm certain."
She narrows her eyes, raising her chin, taking that venomous tone and hailing a banner to war as she did in our prior talk. All those from the IRG and our HC seem to have understood the message, nodding in agreement. Ikaruga, on his end, seems a bit miffed as he leans on a hand, not raising the habitual smile. Sakaki, however, rests a few fingers on the bridge of his nose, inhaling and inhaling for a second. Probably, his thoughts dwell in concern over our Sakaki. Perhaps, that is what mainly fuels his opposition to my project now. Or shouldn't it be the other way around? Hmm… I can't believe I never asked you what was his stance on the worlds where I failed, I was so certain the PM's support was lost to me. And now… you won't even open your eyes.
After a short pause, after the bright smile raises like dawn, she continues speaking. "If by allowing a test run we can clear the uncertainty the UN has about these new developments and through it prove we wish to sincerely cooperate again with the international community, then I see no reason to not support this notion. Certain I am that all of us wish to clear the air between us, that has thickened since the XFJ Project suffered the loss of both prototypes last September, so let this be a first step towards mending our link. I ask you, my fellows, to also give your blessing to the proposal of XO Kouzuki," she requests, staring in serenity yet unblinking, firm and focused. The four Heads agree to it, and the Prime Minister does too later along the members of our HC. She smiles and thanks them, coughing afterwards. "Representatives, I would like to ask you to consider coming to watch the testing when it happens. It would make the negotiations much easier, and I'd be liking to show you my gratitude for your continued support towards both the Empire and Alt IV despite all that has transpired since the invasion in the '98. I offer you all a room to stay on the Imperial Palace as honor guests, should you agree." While the four Heads didn't like that much, the representatives agreed to give an answer along the official announcement of the test run.
Thank God she's on my side. Without her calming the waters, the four Heads and the representatives would have ruined this all with their constant bloodlust and bickering.
Once the talks are diverted to what did I have in mind for the testing runs, I give them a rough detailing of the matter. They all seem to agree, or find nothing noteworthy to comment on. Upon my inquiry towards the authorization for an assault on Sadogashima, both Sakaki and the Shogun ascertain the Empire has the required manpower to support the notion, the HC lending credence to the claim. The Security Council merely requests the documentation to go through the official channels up to their desks before giving me an answer, but that is an answer in itself.
They gave me the okay to forward the documents, despite the noise that will make through all the middlemen involved. There were no hand waves, no side glances, no doubtful words. The coast is clear, and the approval is as good as signed. Siiigh…
Rolling my shoulders after agreeing to their proposal, I give them all the final pieces of data regarding the small progress on Alt IV and on my plan to retake Sadogashima, saying I'll be sending an official document to the UN's International HQ shortly after the meeting ends. I do wish they hand over the XG soon, but there is little I can do on that front until the XM3 can prove itself worthwhile to the US. I'll let the Shin and the weapons be a surprise for later, no need to spend all my cards on this table.
…Hopefully Shirogane will already be well by then. It would be… in the project's interests to have him on the field during the XM3's test, to showcase the full extent of the developments made thus far. And to placate Her Highness, of course.
The usual formal goodbyes are said once most words ran out, after agreements and plans are debated for the date of the trial run. Once more, all those besides me bow and thank our superiors and patrons for their presence, shortly after most of the monitors go dark. The others in the room take their leave on my order, saluting me and departing to wherever it is they should be.
I sigh and rest onto the desk, rubbing my forehead for a moment, enduring whatever crawls right beneath the skin. Yashiro comes closer, offering me a cup of coffee that I gulp in one go, and then goes to the controls and confirms the connection is still truly cut and over. Motoko-nee gives me a nod, leading the way out of the room.
Finally, the last stress test of the 00 Unit before we digitize Kagami. I would like to allow her to say some parting words to Shirogane, but he is out cold and there is no more time to waste. Even then, I need to take a peek at the railgun's mounting and first boot up. Also, arrange that meeting with Daikuuji and oversee the weapons he was handling are still proceeding as expected.
Sigh… Today will be another long day. When was the last time I slept more than four hours again?
…At least I had a short rest a few days ago. You could try and wake up already, couldn't you?
Same day. Some minutes after 7 PM.
(Right by the elevator, B22F.)
The door opens, we stride out of the confines of the four walls and into the hallway. Checking my PDA greets me with the scheduled reports from Marimo about the cadets and Suzumiya about the Valkyries, as well as the docs Takamura sent already. The railgun did start up nicely, I like the singing ring it gives out as it charges up. The heat was growing in expected levels, so she and the team believe it can fire without any setbacks. A good result, at the least.
"Professor, won't you take a moment to have dinner?" Yashiro asks, trying to match my pace.
"No time for that now. I'll eat once we deal with the activation of the 00 Unit."
"…But you probably will end up scanning and going over the numbers all night long," she repines, the fast echo of her short steps chasing my shadow. "It will only take a moment."
"Half an hour is what it'd take, between the request, delivery, and me eating the dish, if I hurry that is. It's too much time wasted, the 00 Unit and its tuning should take precedence for now."
"But shouldn't you-"
"Alright, fine," I stop, feeling her face bury itself in my back as she softly collides into me. Turning around, finding her rubbing her nose and puffing a cheek, I stare into her eyes. She takes a step back, looking down. "Let's make a deal. I take some time off to eat if you tell me what you saw in his mind, in utmost detail."
"…I believe you should speak of that with Takeru-san in person," she whispers, rubbing both hands together as if clasping a lone rope.
"Sigh… You do realize hiding things from me is not a wise move, do you?" I play with some strands of silver hair in between my fingers, weaving them, coiling them around my index as I lean closer, whispering. "Yashiro, you know what is at stake here."
"He… He promised he'd come back."
"And what if he doesn't? Then, we need the 00 Unit active ASAP. And we need to account for what… losses of memory we have to take measures against. You confirmed that there were no two Shiroganes, that it was him and only him. What is it that you do not wish to disclose?"
She looks up, lips folding in. A lone star left in her eyes, yet she then embraces both shoulders for a moment. "You knew and didn't tell me. That's why he was so hurt, why he-"
"No, Shirogane fainted due to a catalyst used by 1st Lt Tsukuyomi and Her Highness, which spurred memories back to him. What was the memory that hurt him the most? Was there some sort of monster chasing him or something?"
She twitches, petrified. "If… If he doesn't wake up soon, would you… pull the plug on him?"
"Huh?"
"I asked if," she looks up, straight into my eyes, a tiny pigeon shivering under a storm, sill trying to fly, "if you would pull the plug if he doesn't wake up soon."
"Excuse me, why are you asking me this?" I get closer, she winces. Realizing I had pulled her hair, I uncurl the strands over my fingers but remain staring, returning the stare. "Was he thinking I'd do something of the sort?"
She nods, holding my gaze. "You two did argue before the last memory recovery, after all. Professor, you are Takeru-san's ally, right? He can count on you, right?"
"…That depends on why are you choosing not to tell me what you saw."
"Well, some things are very scary…"
"Yes, you said that already. Sigh…" Raising back up, shrugging as I ruffle my hair, I turn around and walk towards the medbay again. "Can you at least tell me why is he doubting me? Some sort of effect his Royal Guard self is having on his goals?" Perhaps, wanting to side with Her Purpleness now, hmm?
"…Takeru-san thinks he's alone, that's why he doesn't wanna wake up."
"What?" I look back, her gaze is dragging itself over the floor, steps so delayed I'm gaining ground on her even when slowing down.
"He thinks he's alone, and that I shouldn't help him because you and Sumika-san need me more, that he understands you… would protect the project instead of shielding him any more. So he doesn't know what to do, and wants to think about it more," she finishes with a sigh, expression dry as ice, fallen and sunken like my reflection on my worst days.
"…What? But- How- Why- What does that even- No, why is that what he thinks?"
Scratch me off the table, why is he not trying to gain Her Purpleness' support? Is it the same with her, then? I mean, to admit she has a stepbrother would place a few questions on her shoulders. More so if Shirogane was involved in that covert squadron as I believe. For him to hoist doubts towards me, does he think our prior agreement is not worth anything? That I've used him only to gain Her Highness' support? She should have made it clear to him with the way she argued with me how important he still is for her, and I highly doubt he'd abandon Kagami even in the worst case scenario.
"Yashiro, what else did he say?"
"I… I won't say anything else."
"Huh, is that so. Why would you not?"
"Takeru-san… should talk with you about this, in private. He was hurt much, and there are things I-" she coughs, features constricting as if wanting to puke, "that I believe only he can properly convey to you."
"That only he can convey? What are you-"
"If I said yes… Would you laugh at me?"
Ugh… Why do I have to- It can't be about that, can it? Yet, we did argue a bit that day. Doubting me, wondering if I rather pull the plug on him… Perhaps, thinking on our words about how to deal with Kashgar? No, even if we disagree, he wouldn't turn his back on us, not while his world is-
…
Oh.
Is that it? Do you think… I'd hold you hostage over the safety of your world? Would I do that? Maybe? No, if it comes down to stabilizing the 00 Unit, I would… have to send him back to a branch of his home world and hope that Kagami's data leaks into this world after a balance is made. Sure, it might enhance the ripples of causality and the effect the conductor has on this timeline but that is nothing we can avoid. Plus, the easier the data flows, the faster the 00 Unit can do its job. Even if you have to dirty your hands again… you should know I can mend those timelines. You worked with another me, didn't you? I am not going to leave your services unpaid.
…Maybe, he truly holds some reservations towards me over what transpired in his last experience?
Why are you hesitating? Sure, I did… keep stuff from you. I already apologized, and I said there won't be any more secrets between us, didn't I? You should know I do not utter such words lightly.
Stomping forward, I cross my arms and close my eyes, sighing from my nose.
"I… I don't think he hates you or anything," Yashiro says, her steps indicating a jog to reach me. "Takeru-san is merely… afraid."
"He has no reason to. And if he does not trust in me, then it is on him. Whether he wakes up or not, what we have to do going forward won't change."
"You won't reconsider things if he asks you to?"
"Why would I? He should know our situation doesn't exactly give us any leeway. And you," I stop and look back, her rush halts in a heartbeat, her breath caught in her throat, "should also be aware of what is ahead of us."
"I-I know, Professor. However, is it truly, um, impossible for you to consider anything else?"
"…What are we talking about here?"
"You seemed to know what I meant with the incident Takeru-san is worried about," she takes a step forward, flapping her bunny ears. "Can't you try and find another way to deal with whatever this is?"
"…No, I may not have that luxury. And we are not talking about this," I turn around, resuming my march.
I need stability, certainty that nothing will happen while we are away in Sadogashima. In truth, the island will remain under UN jurisdiction, the Hive will also remain under our care for the foreseeable future. If the mission Shirogane showed me is any proof, retaking Sadogashima will be arduous enough. Reclaiming the G-Elements will have to wait until after the battle has finished and no BETA remain within the Hive, if we can also avoid the attack upon the base. Those G-Elements will, hopefully, go to the reserves for the XGs. Even if some, a little in honesty, is given to the Empire, the island will most likely turn into a research complex, more so if we manage to leave parts of the core unhurt instead of blasting it all away with the particle cannon.
And if that happens, that is a spark enough to incite a certain domino effect. I already received the call to aid in the relief efforts for the volcanic activity present in a mountain range. I know you said we should try and avoid this incident, to appeal to the Shogunate, but with you regaining your memories we already have a bridge to Her Highness. Using the cards we're dealt, preying upon the opportunity presented by this tragedy should allow us to gain the full support of the Empire, to quell the disquiet that lurks in the Capital.
…He wouldn't be letting his feelings for Her Purpleness blind his mind now, would he? Even if he did say once that… he did not want to prey on others as he saw another me suffering after losing Alt IV, there is little reason for us to not arrange the board we require for a successful mission. America won't stay put, and I rather not have them pull anything while we're busy in the island or after it. Once the Empire exhausts its forces, all that will remain in top form is the Capital Defense Garrison led by Sagiri and the IRG. It is obvious why the Americans would try and make a move now, or why they'd agree to the incursion to Sadogashima without trying to be part of it, letting the Empire deplete its might on the mission. If we lose, the Empire will have little choice but to accept a return to the Treaty in fear of a possible BETA attack. If we win, our forces will already be spread thin. And when we're sent to the Cheorwon mission with the Kyushu garrison, the only other force that would remain in healthy numbers…
You should know the board as good as I do, Shirogane. Why are you doubting me? Is your desire to bring peace preventing you from doing what must be done? If so, I can see why I should, perhaps, pull the plug on you. But I do not believe that is the case, he knows what is at stake here.
…Why? Why not wake up and talk to me? What could be worth risking your memories from vanishing from other people's minds?
Sigh… Well, at least Yashiro did say he would wake up. He's merely conflicted, confused. Once he gets his act together, we can have a talk, a mature and calm talk about what we want out of our partnership, of how to proceed going forward. Worst case scenario, if it proves difficult to tune the 00 Unit, I could try to send Yashiro into his mind again and drag him back by force. Him hating me… is only a small, a tiny price to pay.
Reaching the medbay, I swipe my ID Card on the lock. A moment of wait, the numpad opens and I input the password. From red to green, a beep echoes, the lock gyrates and I walk forward. The door opens and the smell of synth meds overflows me, the rows of white beds that are empty fill the view.
Going to the far end, where only he should be, I quickly reach the monitors and find-
A flat-line echoing about.
Blinking as my steps halt, I throw a gaze to the monitors. A line remains undisturbed in its stretching, the beeping continues to resonate. A sharp breath in, a step closer, the machine shows no errors. It says… his heartbeat is…
Slamming the curtains away, I gape as coldness embraces my back. Yashiro gasps behind me, and my hands claw and bend the white fabric, pulling it down and down.
"What… the hell?" I close my eyes, rub my forehead, and look at the bed again.
There's still nothing under the sheets, the cables and sensors left dangling above them, the IV no longer in function and with both tubes also rolling to the floor.
I move the sheets, turn around the pillow, and I find nothing. Going to the beds nearby meets the same result, no matter how much I look. Walking back to the bed where he should have been, I notice even the uniform I had left in case he woke up is gone.
Shirogane's gone.
He really is… gone? Did he choose to? Or took too much time and the pull did this on its own?
"P-Professor, maybe you could try and call the doctor?" Yashiro asks, pulling my wrist.
"…Then, why didn't she report that he had already woken up?"
"Eh? I, uh, I don't-"
"He left, huh. He just up and vanished, is that it?" I punch the bed, kick at it, the monitors.
My jaw hurts as if I had been keeping my breath underwater, the lines of pain spreading up to my ears.
Smacking the system off, the echo of the flat-line doesn't leave my ears even after the screen goes blank.
Short and shallow breaths do little, little against the void in front of me.
Procuring my comms, I quickly dial up the connection.
"Yes, Homura speaking," she answers, taking too much time.
"This is Kouzuki. Homura, did something happen to the patient in B22F?"
"Patient? Um, XO, what do you speak of?" She asks, voice a bit hoarse and low.
"I had assigned you to watch over a patient in need of care today, he was in B22F."
"I, uh, err…" she stalls a reaction, groaning for a moment. "My apologies, ma'am. It seems to have slipped my mind?"
"…Slipped your mind, huh." Are you making fun of me? Hilarious, isn't it. Yes, this is all just one big fucking joke, ain't it.
"S-Sorry, ma'am. I shall immediately-"
"No, don't even bother. Forget I said anything." Quickly cutting the connection, stuffing the comms into my pocket as I turn around, my steps blast to the door, cursing the heels for not letting me speed up further.
"P-Professor, where are you going?" Yashiro says, raising her voice in a plead for me to decelerate.
"To my office, for the readings on G-Radiation. If he slipped off to another world, then we need to start the countermeasures."
"B-But he said that-"
"Then, where is he?" I stop and walk back to her, meeting her stare. She quivers, and looks down in silence. "Yes, that's right. Let's just… get this over with." I sigh at the stare, the hand that lightly pulls at the edge of my lab coat, at what dampness builds up in her eyes. My comms beep, I press the button as I sigh, seeing Yashiro's dejected, crumbling expression as I pull away. "Kouzuki here."
"XO, would you have some time?" Marimo, huh.
"What is it now? I am rather busy."
"I only wanted to ask a single question if-"
"Out with it, what do you want?"
"About Shirogane's situation, I wanted to know if-"
"There are no updates, and there will be no updates," I spit out, turning on my heels and resuming my march.
"Huh? Wait, what do you-"
"Marimo, I don't have a single fucking femtosecond to waste right now. So please do me a favor and don't ask me about this again. Are we clear? Yes, thanks. Later." I cut the call, rolling my eyes, as I chop the elevator's button and, thankfully, the door slides open immediately.
"Are you certain it was wise to react like that?" Yashiro asks, entering the elevator and coming to my side while a hand rests on her chest that tries to ease the rhythm of her breathing.
"It is what it is, nothing we can do except damage control," I sigh, resting against the wall once the ascent starts. All of this work… to be this close… and now you're gone, just like that? Without even trying to talk with me, you just turn around and leave? "Yashiro, do you… not sense anything?" I ask, half resigned as I run a hand over my face as a sudden hold binds me, as the heavy chains cackle at me, at the coin that left my shoulders.
She looks down, joining both hands, complexion turning grim and solemn then tight, lips quivering. I shake my head, patting hers, ruffling the thin strands of hair on my fingers while I close my eyes and simply gape, to let the vile air in me leave. This void in my stomach could really use some dinner right about-
SLAP!
Her bunny ears perk up sharply, making me flinch. Eyes widening, mouth opening and closing in quick succession, mumbling something under her breath, she pales to the point of looking like made out of paper, folding on herself.
"Yashiro? Yashiro, what are you seeing?" I grab her shoulders, crouching to meet her gaze.
Which is unfocused, again piked and cracked as her hands form a lock on her stomach. And as she subtly shivers, as she avoids my eyes for some reason, she whispers in such a tiny, tiny voice, "The… forest. I can hear it, I see… that forest, and the- The dragon is roaring."
"Huh? Wait, what are-"
She tugs and pulls and tugs at my arm, yet her eyes remain scarred. Yashiro looks down, unwinding her own breath, choking my arm, sinking into the sea as she mumbles dragon and forest under her breath. Until she says something else, losing further color from her face.
"And that evil fox, too."
