Willow slowly allowed her mind to slip into consciousness. Her awakening senses registered that she was alone in bed, and the happy feeling she had from lingering sleep started to fade. She opened her eyes, and the happy feeling returned. Laying on the bed where she'd expected to find Tara's blonde tresses was instead, a single red rose. Beside it was a note:
Happy Birthday my love. I'm sorry I wasn't here to wake up to, I know how you love waking up together. I promise, I'll make it up to you later. I love you. Stay where you are, I will be back soon.
Always yours,
Tara
Willow smiled and relaxed back into the pillows. Hearing a small mewing, she reached down to the floor and scooped up Miss Kitty Fantastico. The cat was nearly mature but still tiny, a legacy of early malnourishment before she had found her home with Willow and Tara. She happily settled herself on Willow's stomach, and the redhead was content to stroke the cat and let her mind sit empty until her girlfriend returned.
She didn't have long to wait. Miss Kitty had just dozed off when she was awoken by the door opening. Tara peered in, seeing her two favorite girls curled up on the bed together. She grinned at the human girl.
"Hi baby. Sleep well?"
"Mmm, well I woke up all cold but I had this nice note that said I'd get that made up for later." She made a mild pouting face that her girlfriend knew was for show.
"Oh really, who in the world could have written that?" Tara asked, grinning widely. She was walking across to the bed, balancing a tray with pancakes, sliced strawberries, and two glasses of orange juice. Willow moved the cat off her lap with a startled squeak as Tara joined her under the covers with a good morning kiss.
"You made me breakfast in bed?" Willow asked.
"Well it's not every day my girlfriend turns twenty."
Willow grinned through her mouthful of pancakes.
"Have I told you lately how much I love you?" she asked, after hastily swallowing the pancakes.
"You can't say it too many times." Tara whispered in her ear, placing a few gentle kisses along her girlfriend's collarbone.
"Mmmm…baby…as much as I love it when you do that…could you maybe wait a few minutes?" Willow asked sheepishly.
"What's wrong?" Tara pulled back, mildly surprised.
"Nothing! Just that these pancakes are really good and I'd hate to waste them…"
Tara laughed. "Of course."
"Want some?" Willow held up a forkful of pancake dripping with syrup. The two of them filled their stomachs without feeding themselves a single bite.
An hour later, Willow was lazily tracing patterns on Tara's naked stomach. Her head was pillowed on Tara's shoulder, a favorite spot of the self-proclaimed breast gal.
"Willow, we have to get up."
"Already? But it's my birthday." Willow pouted slightly.
"I know, sweetie, that's why we have to get up. The gang is taking you to lunch, remember? I'm surprised Dawn hasn't burst in here yet."
"Right, can't we make it dinner instead?"
"No, because I claimed that for just us." Tara kissed her gently on the lips.
Willow acquiesced with a smirk. "Promise that it'll be as good as breakfast?"
"Better."
