Inside, Ballet Dormitory - 1870 - Dawn
Jamila POV
As the first ray of dawn comes through my transom window. I am in a robe, having not slept all night and I make a decision. I slowly open the dressing room door. Raoul sleeps in a chair outside my door, his sword across his lap wanting to make sure I never meet Erik again. I quietly tiptoe past him: careful not to wake him.
Inside Stables - Moments Later - Day
As the haunting music builds, I quickly wake one of the sleeping, drunken stable hands. But someone watches from the shadows, as I give the Stableman some money and leave quickly. "Where to, mademoiselle?" The stableman asks. "The cemetery." I tell him.
Inside Vast Costume Department - Day
Empty at dawn. I find a black velvet dress and throw off my robe as my eyes focus on a vase of Dark red roses. I remember the day Hakon met Christine. They were children and would have been sweethearts had it not been for Raoul.
An eight-year-old boy is hiding in the bushes. "Are they gone?" Hakon asks.
"They who?" Christine asks the boy.
"My brothers. They bully me because I am different." Hakon tells us.
"Your adopted, aren't you?" I ask.
I am still a de Chagny. But my biological father is now someone I must call uncle. He and mother passed away." Hakon tells us.
Christine hugs Hakon but the next day, Raoul and Phillipe make sure to keep the two separate.
Inside Stables
The weary, bleary eyed, hungover stableman hitches horses to a carriage. As he finishes... the dark shadow moves swiftly and with one blow knocks him unconscious. As the stableman falls to the stable floor...
Dormitory Corridor - Day
Raoul POV
I am outside of Jamila's door, unwanted though it may be. Almost like a premonition, I wake.
Inside Stables
Jamila POV
Dressed in a black velvet dress and cape, carrying the red roses, I get in the open carriage. I am unaware that the driver, swathed in his black cloak, is not the Stableman.
I think of when Christy remet Hakon.
It's a day after Buquet was killed and I guess Hakon been in the audience. Hakon comes to check on us Daae women. "Christine, Jamila, how are you after that fiasco?" Hakon asks.
"We are fine. But I know you truly came to see Christy." I tell him. With that I take my leave. When I meet Erik later that night, I assure him Hakon is nothing like Phillipe or Raoul. That he's the adopted black sheep. That his mother Aida, and his father, Francois, were killed and he had to stay with his closest relatives afterwards.
After hearing that, Erik decided to give Hakon a job and not event paint him with the same brush as his "brothers". Hakon also comes to see that the girl that his obnoxious, self-centered, egotistical older brother Raoul claims to love, though he also remembers how Raoul had bullied me in the past because of my heritage, and some things about his family doesn't change. Including that his 2 older brothers and his parents are racist, while he isn't.
Three weeks later, Christy and Hakon were engaged.
Raoul POV
Holding my sword, I hear the sound of the horse's hooves on the cobbled streets and rush to the window. I see Jamila's carriage disappearing into the grey dawn as snowflakes begin to fall.
I dash into the stables to find a stableman starting to come to. I leap bareback onto a white stallion.
Paris Streets - Day
Jamila POV
The open carriage races down the snow-covered streets. It is cold and foggy. The horses' hooves beat on the cobblestones, their nostrils smoke. The driver swathed in black drives them on. I sit in the back; the wind presses my veil to my face like a mask.
"In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came... That voice which calls to me and speaks my name..." I sing.
Paris Streets
Raoul POV
With the sword I ride the white charger.
Cemetery
Jamila POV
I see the huge legendary cemetery shrouded in the mist. I hear a bell tolling. Bearing the bouquet of red roses, gliding past towering mausoleums and Crosses. Great gargoyles and angels stare down at me. In the distance, the carriage and horses disappear into the fog. "Little Lette thought of everything and nothing... Her father promised her that he would send her the Angel of Music... Her father promised her... Her father promised her." I sing, tears dripping. In the distance, I see a large mausoleum on a ridge. I am clearly moving toward it. I see the passing statues and crosses. I lower my hood and veil. "You were once my one companion... You were all that mattered... You were once a friend and father - then my world was shattered... Wishing you were somehow here again... Wishing you were somehow near... Sometimes it seemed, if I just dreamed, somehow you would be here..." I sing. I am unaware of the long dark shadows sweeping across the snow towards me.
"Wishing I could hear your voice again... knowing that I never would... Dreaming of you won't help me to do all that you dreamed I could... Passing bells and sculpted angels cold and monumental seem, for you, the wrong companions - you were warm and gentle." I sing.
I am arriving at the foot of the mausoleum steps.
"Too many years fighting back tears... Why can't the past just die...? Wishing you were somehow here again... Knowing we must say goodbye... Try to forgive... Teach me to live... Give me the strength to try..." I sing, crying.
Erik swoops down and up over me apparently.
"No more memories, no more silent tears... no more gazing across the wasted years... Help me say goodbye. Help me say goodbye." I sing. I kneel down and lay the red roses on the snow-covered steps. High above me, the gates at the top of the steps begin to open. I hear the phantom's voice from deep within the candlelit crypt. "Wandering child... so lost... so helpless... yearning for my guidance..." Erik sings, soft and enticing. Bewildered, I look up. I see that the mausoleum's inner gates are open; a strange glow emanates from the interior. Light spills down the steps. I murmur breathlessly, "Angel... or father... friend or Phantom...? Who is it there staring...?" I sing. "Have you forgotten your Angel...?" Erik sings. And then I decide to play along. "Angel... oh, speak... what endless longings echo in this whisper!" I sing to Erik. I rise slowly, drawn to the light above me. "Too long you've wandered in winter... far from my gaze..." Erik sings. I am slowly ascending the steps towards the inner doors and light. "Wildly my mind beats against you..." I sing.
"You resist..." Erik sings.
"...yet the soul obeys... Angel of Music I denied you... turning from true beauty... Angel of Music! My protector Come to me strange Angel... yet the soul obeys... Angel of Music! You denied me... turning from true beauty... Angel of Music! Do not shun me... Come to your strange Angel..." Erik and I sing together. I have begun to discern a dark form within the light of the mausoleum.
"I am your Angel of Music... Come to me: Angel of Music..." Erik beckons me, singing to me.
But just as I reach the last few steps, Raoul, the pig, on the magnificent white charger, leaps over the wall of the cemetery with a great cry., the Phantom, Erik continues to beckon me. I am now at the entrance to the mausoleum. Raoul meanwhile is galloping and jumping through the crosses and over the monuments. Snow and dirt fly.
"Whatever you believe, this man... this thing... is not your father!" Raoul shouts to me.
I turn around and want to slap him.: "Raoul, you pig go away..." I tell Raoul. But I see Raoul arriving on the white charger. At last, Erik appears up on the top of the mausoleum behind the huge stone cross. The Phantom flies at Raoul, his sword drawn. What ensues is a spectacular fight through the cemetery. Raoul fights desperately, managing to match the Phantom in swordplay, displaying bravery, skill and courage... I scream as Raoul forces Erik back. Raoul laughs as he slashes at Erik, cutting him on the shoulder. But Erik is a fine swordsman and fights on, parrying Raoul's blows and gradually forcing Raoul back, Erik falls against the stone side of the mausoleum. Erik is close to having the opportunity to run Raoul through with his sword. He looks into Raoul's eyes - they burn with hatred.
"No! Erik... no... Not like this." I tell Erik. Raoul looks at me in betrayal. Raoul remounts his horse and sweeps me up onto the saddle beside him by force.
"No! I want to stay with Erik!" I tell Raoul before he knocks me out.
"Now, let it be war upon the house of de Chagny!" the phantom sings. As they ride off, we notice a trail of blood red rose petals scattered in the snow.
Cemetery - 1919 - Dusk
Raoul reaches for the spot on his arm where the memory of the old wound which he inflicted on himself still looks up to see a legion of Gendarmes marching past. As he watches them march away, we stay with their backs as they morph into Gendarme from 1870.
Opera Populaire
Raoul POV
Gendarmes from 1870 hurry up the open steps, past large posters announcing, "GRAND PREMIERE - DON JUAN TRIUMPHANT!" More Gendarmes enter the backstage area via the stables, shouldering weapons. They march through the chaotic preparations for the show as Reyer rehearses Piangi and Carlotta. "We have all been blind. And yet the answer is staring us in the face. This could be the chance to ensnare our clever friend." I sing. "We're listening..." Andre sings. "Go on..." Firmin sings. "We shall play his game - perform his work - but remember we hold the ace... For, if Miss Daae sings, he is certain to attend..." I sing. "We are certain the doors are barred..." Andre sings. "We are certain the police are there... we are certain they're armed..." Firmin sings
"The curtain falls, his reign will end!" Firmin, Andre, and I sing. I notice Jamila watching from the wings. Her look; accusation and hatred. She turns and runs from me. I follow to Jamila to the Chapel.
The Chapel
Jamila POV
Raoul finds me kneeling near my father's memorial. Candles burn on the altar, bathing me in a soft light.
"Raoul, don't make me do this... Raoul, don't put me through this ordeal by fire... I know... We'll be parted forever... He won't let me go... What I once used to dream... If this happens, my dreams won't be. (sung) And he'll always be there, singing songs in my head... He'll always be there, singing songs in my head..." I speak.
"You said yourself he was nothing but a man... Yet while he lives, he will haunt us 'till we're dead..." I slap him and turn away, unhappily.
"Twisted every way, what answer can I give? Am I to risk my life, to win the chance to live? Can I betray the man who once inspired my voice? Do I become his prey? Never will I risk the love of my life. Go and take your love elsewhere." I sing.
Raoul turns and goes away, out of the room, as I will never give Erik up.
