No notes, just enjoy!
Both Scott and Stiles spun around when they heard the news so fast that Isaac thought they were going to have a whiplash. Stiles had to actually hold onto the edge of the desk because he almost fell out of the chair. Given any other circumstance, Isaac would have found the sight hilarious. This was no laughing matter though. Not when he was scared shitless at the thought of becoming a teenage father.
Man, just even the word 'father' was enough to give Isaac chills, and not in a good way.
"You're gonna-" Stiles began to sputter, "But you- I- what?!"
"Are you serious?" Scott asked a little more calmly than his best friend, "You're actually saying that…"
Isaac cut the true alpha off with a nod. "Yeah… I think I got a girl pregnant."
"But I don't understand," Scott said. Typical. "How did that happen?"
Refraining from rolling his eyes, Isaac rested his elbows on his knees. "You see, Scott, when a boy and a girl are attracted to each other, they take off their clothes, lay down together, and then they-"
"Dear God, no!" Stiles interrupted, shaking his head and waving his hands around, "I think we all know how the process of conceiving works." He furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at Scott. "You do know how it works, right?"
"Yes, Stiles," Scott said, his voice laced with annoyance, "I know how babies are made."
"Just checking." Stiles turned his attention back to Isaac. "Dude, you've only been here for a day. How the hell did you manage to knock a girl up so fast?"
God, these two were the biggest idiots that Isaac had ever met in his entire seventeen years on earth. How they have actually been able to survive this whole time, he will never know. Trying his hardest to not slap them both upside the head, Isaac rubbed his temples.
"Obviously it happened before I left for France," he told them, "It was the night of Allison's funeral. After I left Derek's loft, I met up with an old friend of mine from before I got the bite. She and I drove out by that cliff at the preserve. We drank an entire bottle of raspberry schnapps, I told her I was leaving, and then the next thing you know…" Isaac sighed. "She's pregnant."
"So that's why you never came home that night," Scott realized. He sat down next to Isaac on the bed.
"I didn't want her driving while she was intoxicated so we just decided to spend the night in the bed of her truck."
The memory alone was enough for Isaac to crack a little smile. He remembered it like it was yesterday. It was so cold that night but they had thrown a couple blankets over themselves and cuddled with each other like penguins to keep each other warm. Feeling her smaller body clinging onto his and her face nuzzled into his chest was one of the most amazing things Isaac had ever felt. Everything about that night was just perfect.
Why did it have to end?
"Who is it?" Scott asked, bringing Isaac back to the present.
Does he tell them the truth? It would almost be doing a disservice to Faith by going ahead and telling her secret to other people. Isaac didn't want to risk exposing her to the public, knowing how quickly news travels in this town. But then again, it was Scott and Stiles. They may be morons, but Isaac knew that he could count on them to keep this to themselves, even from the rest of the pack.
"Faith," Isaac finally answered, "Faith McGregor."
Out of all of the reactions he could have predicted to come the confession, Stiles being relieved was the last thing on the list. "Oh my god, that makes so much more sense! I swear, I thought it was going to be Ms. Blake all over again."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Isaac questioned.
"Malia kept mentioning something about Faith having two events," Scott explained, "I noticed it, too, but we couldn't figure out what it could mean. Now we know that it's because there's another person inside her."
"At least she's not a raging killing machine," Stiles chuckled, "That's gotta make you feel a little bit better."
Barely. Isaac buried his face in his hands, still having a hard time processing everything. "Fuck, I can't believe this… I'm gone for two months and then all of a sudden, I'm having a baby."
"Maybe it's not yours."
Isaac furrowed his eyebrows at Scott statement. "Why wouldn't it be mine?"
"Like you said, you've been gone for two months," the true alpha said, "And you guys weren't exclusive. Who's to say that Faith hadn't been with anyone else around that time?"
Ugh, just the thought of Faith being underneath and getting impregnated by another guy made Isaac feel sick to his stomach. He didn't know if she even had been physical with someone else other than him and quite frankly, he didn't want to. Whether it was due to the possibility of Faith carrying his child or just her being his friend, Isaac could just feel the protectiveness and possessiveness of her radiating throughout his entire body. No guy would ever be good enough for Faith in his eyes.
It was very hypocritical of him to have these thoughts. How could Isaac be so angry at the idea of Faith with other people when he knew damn well that she wasn't the only girl he slept with? The two were just friends, nothing more. Well, besides the fact that they might potentially be coparents. They didn't even have feelings for each other like that, at least that Isaac knew of. Faith was a big girl and allowed to do whatever with whoever she wanted. Which might be a problem now that she was pregnant, which is what the main focus should be on right now.
"That's always a possibility," Isaac admitted.
"Well, then all you gotta do is just ask her," Stiles said, "If it's someone else's kid, then bam! You're in the clear."
There was still one problem. "She won't even talk to me. When I talked to her earlier, Faith practically said that she didn't even wanna be my friend anymore. And she keeps running away from me any chance she gets. How am I supposed to talk to her if I can't get her to stop avoiding me?"
"Playing hard to get, are we?" Stiles smirked, writhing his hands together like he was an evil villain. "Well, my improperly dressed acquaintance, all you have to do is catch her by surprise. Make it so that she has no choice but to listen to you. And I know how to do just that."
Even Scott was looking nervous for whatever scheme his best friend was about to conjure up. "This is not gonna end well."
School was the last place Faith wanted to be right now for multiple reasons. Ever since she received the shock of her life the day before, her anxiety level has skyrocketed beyond belief. She cried herself out for about three hours straight after she got home until Drew walked through the front door. From then on out, Faith had been completely numb. All of her movements have been robotic and lifeless, which her dad had noticed when they sat down for dinner Faith had hardly touched her food. But she had just wrote it off to her being tired and thankfully Drew didn't ask her anymore questions. Faith was nowhere near ready to have that conversation with him and if things worked out in her favor, maybe she wouldn't need to.
Paranoia had taken its place within the sixteen year old as she walked through the halls. If her calculations were correct, it had been only two months and five days since she and Isaac had slept together, so obviously no one would be able to tell that she was pregnant. But whenever someone would even glance at her, Faith had the instant fear that they knew that something was up with her. Which was why she was wearing her baggiest sweatshirt to hide herself even more.
Faith still couldn't believe it. Every time she thought it to herself, it just sounded so unreal. That test that for some reason was still in her truck was a blatant reminder that this was as real as it could get. She was actually pregnant. When you think about girls in high school that are stereotypically least likely to become pregnant, all signs pointed to someone like Faith, a hermit band geek. A girl that always had a plan. It was safe to say that getting knocked up was absolutely not part of the plan. Faith needed to come up with a solution and come up with it fast because she was not about to let this mistake take away everything she had been working so hard for.
She had been in the school building for almost ten minutes and had yet to run into Isaac, which she hoped would stay that way. There was a good chance that Isaac had mapped out every single direction Faith took throughout the school, so she decided that she had to take alternate routes in order to get to her classes, even if it takes her longer. Faith was constantly looking over her shoulder, which proved to be a bad decision very quickly.
As she walked by one of the science classrooms, she was abruptly captured and yanked into the room, causing her to yelp like a chihuahua. The door shut behind her and whoever the asshole was that grabbed her. Just as Faith was about to scream, a familiar hand covered her mouth.
"Relax!" the voice she was trying to avoid said, "It's just me!"
Of course this just made Faith angrier. Yanking Isaac's hand off her mouth, she spun around to look up at him. "Are you fucking crazy?! You can't just grab people, Isaac! I was about two seconds away from blowing my rape whistle!"
"Why do you even have a rape whistle?" Isaac asked, tilting his head slightly.
"Because I'm a girl," Faith said, "and a girl has to be prepared for dealing with creepy ass stalkers like you."
"Oh, come on," Isaac scoffed, "What do you possibly think I'm gonna do to-" Right when he reached out to put his hand on her shoulder, Faith hurriedly raised her keychain to her mouth and blew harshly on the whistle attached to it. "Alright, give me that!"
One of the windows just so happened to be opened so when Isaac grabbed the keychain out of Faith's hand, he ripped off the whistle and chucked it out of the window. He then took the girl's hand and placed the keychain back in it. The entire time Faith's mouth was agape, bewildered by what he just did.
"You owe me a new rape whistle!"
"Forget the whistle," Isaac said, trying to calm her down, "We need to talk about what I saw yesterday."
"I don't need to talk to you about anything," Faith snapped, "I'm outta here." She went to open the door but it wouldn't budge. "What the- why's the door locked?"
"See, I figured you would try to run away again," Isaac told her, almost a little smug, "so I had to call in some reinforcements so you wouldn't escape."
Eyebrows scrunched together, Faith peered out the door window to see Scott and Stiles on the other side. They both flashed her stupid toothy smiles and waved. All it did was just pissed Faith off even more and she banged on the door, making the boys jump.
"Unlock the door, losers!" she yelled.
"Faith, you need to calm down," Isaac said, "They're just helping us be alone so I can talk to you."
Now Faith was seething. "You told them?"
"I had to. But down worry, they promised that they wouldn't tell anyone about you."
"Is that supposed to make me feel better?!"
"Please, I am begging you," Isaac pleaded, "I can only imagine how scared you are about this and the last thing I want to do is add onto it. But I don't want you going through it alone. Especially if the baby's mine. Just, please… please, talk to me."
Clearly, Isaac was not going to let it go. Faith looked into his eyes and saw nothing but sincerity, showing her that despite everything, he did somewhat still care about her. Deep down, it softened her heart up just a smidge. Until the thought crept in that maybe Isaac was only be nice because he felt guilty. Anyway, Faith figured she wasn't going to be set free unless they talked it out so she finally decided to walk over to one of the lab desks and lean against it.
She sighed. "It is yours, by the way. You're the only one I've been with recently. So if you were hoping it was someone else's… sorry to burst your bubble."
Knowing that another guy didn't get Faith pregnant shouldn't have been as relieving to Isaac as it was. He didn't understand either, but that wasn't important at the moment. "I thought you were on birth control."
"I am, but I've been on the same prescription for a long time know so the dosage probably isn't strong enough for me anymore. That's the only explanation I can think of."
Isaac nodded. "I see… are you… how are you doing?"
That made Faith let out a humorless chuckle. "Seriously? I'm freaking out, Isaac. I'm only sixteen. My biggest worries right now should be getting good grades and saving enough money to get into college. Not having a baby." She covered her face with her hands. "God, how could I be so stupid…"
"Faith, I am really sorry for putting you in this position," Isaac told her, "If I had any idea what that night was going to lead to, I would have had a condom on me."
"How could you have known?" Faith scoffed, "You were at a funeral earlier that day."
Like he really needed the reminder. "Yeah… I know. But I really do feel bad. On the bright side, I'm here now. And I'll do whatever I can to make this up to you and help you."
A lone tear betrayed Faith and slid down her cheek before she realized it. She tried to wipe it away as fast as she could even though Isaac most likely saw it. Whether it was the fact that she was pregnant and scared or that Isaac was doing his best to be nice, Faith was filled with so much emotion and she couldn't fight it. But she had to shove it down. Being a sobbing mess wasn't an option.
She cleared her throat. "You know what? It doesn't matter. I'll just call a women's health clinic outside of Beacon Hills and get this whole thing taken care of."
"Get this taken care of how?" Isaac asked.
"By getting an abortion?" Faith said in a 'duh' tone, "And then we can just forget any of this ever happened."
Now the beta was standing up straight, caught off guard. "Wait, you wanna get an abortion?"
"Well, what other choice is there?"
"Not getting one."
Anger began to bubble up within Faith once again. "Excuse me?"
"I don't want you getting an abortion," Isaac said, not necessarily thinking twice about it. But when he did think about it, he knew right away that he meant what he said.
"Um, I don't think it's up to you," Faith told him, "It's my body, my choice."
"But I'm the father."
"So what? You're not the one with the baby inside you, I am." Faith jabbed at Isaac's chest. "And I say that I'm getting rid of it. If you don't like it, then go back to France and get someone else pregnant. End of discussion."
"That's not fair, Faith." But the girl was already grabbing her backpack and getting ready to leave. It was now Isaac's turn to get mad, not willing to accept the answer he was given. He marched up to her and grabbed her arm. "Hold on, I am not done talking about this-"
Quick to react, Faith had unlocked the pepper spray on her keychain and sprayed Isaac right in his blue eyes. He instantly let her go and covered his face as he cried out.
"Jesus Christ! Ah, fuck!"
This gave the girl the chance to finally make her escape. Scott and Stiles had already unlocked the door earlier so Faith barged right out of the room. Both of them were still waiting outside though, being the nosy little weasels they were.
"So, how did it go?" Stiles asked sweetly.
The only thing response he was given was a swift punch to the throat before Faith walked away. Stiles's hand went to his throat as he began gagging. All Scott could do was look back and forth between his best friend and Isaac as he exited the classroom with red eyes. Isaac's hand rose as soon as Scott opened his mouth to speak.
"Don't ask."
"But what did she say to you?" Scott ended up asking anyway.
"And what the hell did you do to piss her off?!" Stiles wheezed out, doubled over with his hands on his knees.
"She said that the baby's for sure mine," Isaac told them as he wiped his eyes, "And she wants to get an abortion."
"That's a good thing, right?" Scott wondered, "I mean, since neither of you want to be parents right now, her getting an abortion is the right thing to do." Isaac remained silent, almost upset. Then for probably the first time in the true alpha's life, Scott finally understood what was happening. "Unless… you actually want the baby."
Did he? He would be absolutely bonkers if he actually said that he wanted to be a seventeen year old father. It didn't make any sort of sense. Who in their right mind would want to take on this daunting task at such a young age? And let's not forget the fact that Isaac would be bringing a child into a world full of monsters and bad people. It would almost be selfish of him to not only subject his child but Faith into that world as well. He couldn't promise to keep either of them safe if anything else poses as a threat, which was terrifying to even think about putting them both in danger.
On the other hand, what if he was meant to be a father? Now, Isaac wasn't one to necessarily believe in signs or anything of that nature, but it couldn't be a coincidence that he came back from France to find out that a girl that he cared about more than his own well being was pregnant with his son or daughter. Just thinking that there could be such a thing as fate made him want to laugh. Then Isaac started imagining holding his baby in his arms in about seven months time and his heart swelled.
Holy shit. He really did want this.
"I don't know what to do though," Isaac finally said, "Faith seems so adamant on it and I don't know how to change her mind. And I'm sure if I keep trying to get her alone I'm probably gonna get fucking pepper sprayed again."
"Well, you can't force her to do anything," Scott told him, being the leader he was, "but maybe later on in the day when both of you have calmed down, you can try to talk with her again and think of a plan together. That's all you can really do."
"Yeah… I know."
Both werewolves looked down at Stiles, still hacking up a storm. "You alright, dude?" Scott asked.
"Oh, yeah," Stiles choked out, "Besides the fact that I now have a bruised esophagus, everything is just hunky dory."
Much to Faith's relief, the rest of her day at school went without a hitch. Not even when she was even in any of her classes with them did Isaac, Thing One, and Thing Two try to approach her. Whenever Faith so much glanced in Stiles's direction, the kid's hands immediately went to his neck and he sank down in his chair in a poor attempt to hide from her. That was the only time during the day that Faith came somewhat close to laughing, but not even knowing that the boys were afraid of her distracted her from the conversation she had with Isaac.
She had to admit, maybe Faith did go a little too far with the pepper spray and the comment about Isaac going back to France. Was it too early in her pregnancy to start blaming it on hormones? It didn't stop her from feeling kind of bad for how she approached things. But how dare Isaac try to demand her not to do something that was involving her body. Like he was the one that has to go through this. He had no idea what it was like to be in Faith's shoes right now, father or not. Yes, she may have her fears and doubts, but she knew this was ultimately the best thing for her to do. For the both of them. Surely Isaac could respect that.
Later that evening, after Drew had come home from work, he and Faith started on making dinner. They worked together side by side in comfortable silence, Drew only breaking it once in a while to instruct his daughter on what to do next. It wasn't until they were getting ready to start setting up the table when he finally spoke up.
"So how was school?"
To which Faith replied by shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly and saying, "It was fine, I guess."
"Just fine?" Drew asked, "No drama, no hot gossip?"
"What, you don't get enough entertainment from the guys at the construction sight?" Faith laughed.
"Yeah, but sometimes teenagers are much more ruthless," Drew said, "Back when I was high school, there was either always a fight or a football player was cheating on his cheerleader girlfriend with another cheerleader. And all hell would break loose when someone was pregnant."
Oh, he had no idea. Faith chuckled nervously. "Nope. None of that at my school."
Before her dad could ask her anymore questions, there was a knock on the front door, taking them both by surprise. "I'll go get that," Drew volunteered, "Finish setting up the table. And this time, save some chips and guacamole for me."
"You're lucky I'm feeling nice right now then," Faith teased. Her dad rolled his eyes as he headed towards the door.
Waiting until Drew was out of sight, Faith picked up a freshly made chip and dunked it into the also homemade guacamole. She shoved the whole thing in her mouth and wasn't even finished chewing when she already reached out for another one.
"Isaac Lahey? It's good to see you, kid!"
Hearing the name that haunted her dreams and reality had Faith swallowing what was left of her chips down the wrong pipe and she started to cough uncontrollably. Eyes watering, she took a drink of her water and mentally cursed Isaac for having the balls to show up at her house.
Well played, Lahey. Well played.
"Good to see you, too, sir," she heard Isaac say to her dad as she walked over to the door. He was even wearing that flashy grin that could make any girl swoon. Faith included. "You're looking greater than ever."
"Why, thank you." Drew turned towards his daughter. "Faith, how come you never told me Isaac was back in town?"
"Must've just slipped my mind," Faith said, trying to hide her ever-growing annoyance.
Isaac dug into his pocket and pulled out the same whistle he threw out the classroom window earlier. "Anyway, Faith dropped this at the school and I wasn't able to catch her before she left so I just wanted to come by to return it to her."
"How nice of you," Drew beamed, "We're actually just about to sit down for dinner if you want to join us. We're having tacos."
"Oh, I'm sure Isaac has other places to be," Faith jumped in, "Isn't that right, Isaac?"
But being the cocky little twerp the beta was, his smile just seemed to get even bigger, just like the audacity he had. "Sure. I'd be happy to have dinner with you guys. Faith knows I love Mexican."
Son of a bitch.
"Great!" Drew said, "I'm gonna finish getting everything ready. Faith, if you want to come help me out." He walked back into the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Faith stayed put, staring Isaac down. If looks could kill, the beta would be six feet under by now. But he just stepped inside the house and held out the whistle to his old friend. "Here's, uh, your rape whistle. Try to be careful with that next time."
"What are you doing?" Faith whispered harshly.
"I told you that I wasn't done talking to you."
"So you come over to my house?"
"You really didn't give me many other options."
"Are you-"
"Faith!" Drew called out, interrupting said girl before she could rip Isaac a new one, "Come on! The food's gonna get cold."
Before Isaac could walk any further, Faith grabbed his arm (his big, solid, muscular arm that she just wanted to squeeze like a stress toy) and stopped him. Isaac looked down at her and saw nothing but fear in her eyes. It had him tone down the arrogance he was so used to maintaining ever since he received the bite. He had to remember that Faith was only human and for a lot of humans, carrying a baby as a teenager can be just as scary as facing a kanima or the Oni.
"My dad doesn't know anything," she told him, "Please…"
Shaking his head, Isaac assured her, "I won't say anything in front of him. I promise."
Faith didn't say another word. She just nodded and took her hand off Isaac's arm before going to help Drew in the kitchen. Isaac followed her and even offered to help get everything set up, to which Drew accepted graciously.
The three of them finally sat down when all of the food was placed on the table and everyone had something to drink. As they ate, Isaac and Drew were chatting away like they were old college buddies catching up. Damn Isaac and his charming charisma. Here he was, acting like everything was just peachy while Faith sat silently across from him and picked at her food. She could feel her stomach churning from the combination of nerves and morning sickness. After only a few bites, Faith pushed her plate forward, tapping out of eating anymore. Not that Isaac or Drew noticed.
"Isaac, Faith told me that you were in France for a couple months," Drew said, "How was it?"
"To be honest, not all that it's hyped up to be," Isaac answered, "Besides the Eiffel Tower, it's not really like you see in the movies. I will say though that nothing compares to a real French croissant. One of the best things I've ever had."
"I bet," Drew chuckled, "And you were with… Faith said your ex girlfriend's dad? I don't think I remember who it was."
"Allison Argent," Faith cut in, "Remember, Dad? She just passed away back in November." She didn't ignore the sudden frown on Isaac's face when she brought that up. It had to have just cut him deeper.
Even Drew was looking a bit sympathetic for the boy. Great. "Oh, that's right, you did tell me that. I am sorry for your loss, Isaac."
"It's a part of life," the beta shrugged, "You learn to move on from it. At least that's what Allison's dad and I are trying to do. But everything happens for a reason."
"Apparently," Faith said lowly enough so none of the males wouldn't hear her.
But werewolf hearing.
"So are you both planning on moving back to France?" Drew asked, oblivious to how strange his daughter was acting.
"No, I don't think so," Isaac told him, "Chris has some family business out here he needs to take care of. So do I."
He made sure to keep his eyes on the mother of his child as he said that last part to give her a glimpse on just how serious he was about their situation. Faith, on the other hand, pretended not to feel a certain way about him saying the word 'family'. There was no denying that it had her heart beating faster for her liking. At least not to Isaac, which was giving him a small amount of hope that he could get Faith to see things his way.
Dinner ended not too long afterwards, once again with Isaac helping out with the cleaning and such until Drew shooed him and his daughter away from the kitchen so they could 'catch up'. His words, not the teenagers. Isaac was about to protest but Faith stopped him before he could get a word out.
"That's okay," she said, "We need to discuss an upcoming project for school anyway."
"Oh, for what class?" Drew asked.
"Home economics," Isaac immediately replied before Faith could. Lord, give her the strength to not smack her forehead.
Drew turned to them with a raised eyebrow. "You're taking a home economics class?"
"Yeah…" Faith answered unsurely, "It's an elective. To boost our chances for college. You can't have too many credits on your record, you know?"
"The due date's a little farther away but it can't hurt to prepare early," Isaac added. He winced when Faith stomped on his foot but backed off when she shot him a glare that told him to kindly shut up.
As unconvinced Drew seemed, he didn't push the subject any further. "Ok… well, good on you for getting a head start. You kids can go up to Faith's room. Try not to have too much fun." He laughed at his attempt to be a funny parent and went back to washing the dishes.
"A little too late for that," Isaac mumbled underneath his breath.
"Walk, Lahey," Faith ordered through her teeth, pushing him up the stairs before he could put his foot in his mouth any more.
She shut the door behind them when they got up to her bedroom. Isaac took it all in as he looked around. Everything looked exactly the same as the last time he had been in Faith's room, from the mint green walls to the fairy lights strung around her queen sized bed with lavender fuzzy blankets. Even Faith's music stand along with her shelf full of music score books along with novels resided in the corner of her room next to her desk just like Isaac remembered. Not a single thing was out of place and it was all very organized. Just like Faith was.
Most of the time.
A low whistle slipped past Isaac's lips as he sat down on the desk chair. "Man, I don't think I've been in here since the night you and I first had-"
"You're not gonna be able to change my mind if that's why you're here," Faith told him, disrupting his trip down memory lane.
"Just hear me out, that's all I ask of you," Isaac pleaded, "Can you sit down, at least? You standing makes me nervous."
Fair enough. Sighing, Faith sat down on the foot of her bed with her legs crossed. Her blue eyes were trained onto Isaac, who rested his elbows on his knees. He made sure to give Faith his undivided attention.
"I'm sorry I trapped you in the classroom earlier. And I'm sorry that I came on too strong. But I also don't think you really thought out the idea of an… abortion through enough. I'm not saying that you're not allowed to do whatever you want with your body, far from it. Every girl should have that right… but you also need to see it from my perspective."
"Which I'm having a hard time figuring out what exactly that is," Faith said, "What, would you rather have me give it up for adoption?" Slowly, Isaac shook his head for his lips struggled to get the words he truly wanted to say out. But it didn't take a rocket scientist for Faith to finally understand where he was getting at. "You want me to keep it."
"… yeah… yes, I do."
What delusional planet was this guy living in? Faith could have laughed. "You're not serious. In what world do you think you and I are capable of being teenage parents?"
"We could do it, Faith," Isaac said, getting up from the chair to sit on his knees in front of said girl, "I know we can. You're the most well put-together person I've ever met. Once you set your mind to something, you can do anything. And we wouldn't be alone in this. Yeah, your dad might freak out in the beginning, but he'll come around. I know he would be supportive. And Scott's mom is a nurse so she would be able to help us out with any questions we have. Everyone I know would be willing to help-"
"Stop," Faith interrupted, holding her hand up, "Just… stop. Listen to yourself, Isaac. Do you realize how absolutely crazy it sounds? Like this is a normal thing to deal with? Think about all of the hurdles that come with being a parent like all of the stares we'll get from strangers, trying to balance school and our social lives, and of course, let's not forget to mention that we'll have to be responsible for a tiny human being."
"It's not impossible."
"But it is, Isaac. Neither of us are cut out for this. Especially you." Faith pinched the bridge of her nose. "I didn't mean it like that."
"Then how did you mean it?" Isaac asked defensively.
"You were gone for two whole months," Faith clarified, "Hell, I thought you were never coming back after Allison's death."
"I did come back though."
"How do I know that you're not going to do it again? I can't solely depend on you staying here for me and a kid when clearly you have other things going on that are so complex and much bigger than this." Faith gestured to herself. "One more incident and you'll end up swearing this place off for good and abandoning me and your kid."
Not missing a beat, Isaac held onto his friend's hands like a lifeline. "Faith, please. I don't have anyone else left. My family's dead, Allison's dead. Yeah, I have Chris and Scott and all of them, but what I have with them is nothing like what I have with you. You were my best friend, Faith. And while this isn't what either of us planned, knowing that you are the person I'm having a baby with makes me believe that maybe things won't be so bad after all. If I can do this with anyone, it would be you. I want it to be you." He could feel a lump forming in his throat but he swallowed it down. "I just… I wanna know what it's like to have a family again…"
God, do not start crying, Faith. Do not let this boy sway you with his words and his unshed tears and empty promises. You're a lot tougher than some boy. Suck it up and stand your ground.
Looking down at their joined hands, Faith shook her head once more. "Isaac… I can't. You know I have a plan for after high school. I'm supposed to go to New York and Juilliard and audition and work day and night. How am I supposed to do that with a baby? I'll never be able to afford either and I'll end up with no place to go for either of us. That's no way to raise a family. It would be unfair to everyone involved. And it wouldn't be fair to make you give up your life for me. My plans are final, and they don't involve a baby and they don't involve you. I'm sorry."
"So that's it," Isaac said, voice wavering, "You're actually going to go through with it."
"I already made an appointment with the clinic for Friday after school," Faith told him softly, averting his stares, "This is what's best for the both of us." She gently pulled her hands away from Isaac's hold. "You should go."
To say Isaac was saddened by this choice would be the biggest understatement. He was heartbroken. This could have been his only chance to have the family he had always dreamed of and Faith was taking it away from him. He wanted to call her selfish, yet he would be a hypocrite for wanting something so selfish as well. And he couldn't blame Faith one bit. No matter how much this pained him, Isaac had to let her make the call. There was nothing he could do about it.
Blinking back the tears that stung his eyes, Isaac stood up and walked towards the door with slumped shoulders. He placed his hand on the doorknob but didn't turn it right away. Instead he looked back at Faith, still sitting on her bed with her head down.
"For the record, Faith," Isaac said, "I never would have abandoned you. Once I make a promise, I stick with it. I thought you knew me better than that."
He didn't even wait for her to respond before he opened the door and walked out of her room. And possibly even her life. Closing her eyes, Faith flopped on her back and stared up at the ceiling. Her hands went to her still flat stomach, rubbing gently over where she thought her baby might be resting.
Let's just hope that she was doing the right thing.
