Notes: The 4 Parker siblings still died from overusing magic when performing a spell for the Gemini Coven. So it's only Jo (who left the coven soon after her 22nd birthday after giving up her magic), Luke, and Liv.

Seriously, this is supposed to be a short story and I'm too lazy to juggle 4 more Parker siblings. So they're dead.

Summary: Kai goes to Mystic Falls and becomes friends with Caroline.

Place: Mystic Falls, Virginia, USA

Date: May 24, 2009

Kai entered the small town of Mystic Falls with little fanfare on May 24, 2009, a day after the deaths of Miranda and Grayson Gilbert of the founding families. He got an apartment with a direct view of the main town square and introduced himself to the founders. He was a businessman worth several million and he came to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. America's great cities had forgotten their history so it was nice to come to a place that embraces it. With those honeyed words, he got himself an invitation into the mayor's house.

He was given a guide by the mayor's wife, a young blonde by the name of Caroline Forbes who knew the ins and outs of the town. He received a warm welcome from the bubbly blonde. She gave him a tour of all the historical places around the town. And he was very much aware that she was flirting with him, with all the pointed questions about his relationships, how her eyes raked over his body, and how she always stood or sat in a way that would allow him to see her ample cleavage. Kai was sure he wasn't so horny at 16. She was only 16 and yet she already had such poor taste in men. He definitely wasn't the man for her.

In the afternoon, he treated her to a meal and let her down slowly. He was too old for her and he wasn't planning on staying in Mystic Falls. He said he didn't want to break her heart and that she should date around in her age group. He told her she would find a man who wouldn't dare reject her, but instead would be chasing after her rather than have her chase after him. She laughed and relaxed. She liked the idea of a man wanting her so much that he would chase her.

The two became fast friends as their personalities were compatible as fellow control freaks with high expectations and perfectionist personalities. Kai helped improve Caroline's self-esteem with positive reinforcements, telling her that it wasn't a crime to make her likes and dislikes toward people known. Lord knows he's the same. Growing up in the Gemini Coven and leaving them had taught him not to care about others' judgments. Being around Vera and her people, all of whom were very competent individuals with years of experience made him want to be just as competent if not more. Vera also told him to make his own money, to get work, and to start his own business so he could be independent. So he did. He had high expectations for himself so he had the same for the people he surrounded himself with. Anyone who was incapable would find themselves called out in front of everyone else and those who did not improve found themselves demoted or without a job.

He and Caroline were perfectionists, so what? How could they expect everything to be done decently if they're surrounded by incompetence?

Kai stayed far from the elder Bennett witch as he came and went to and from Mystic Falls. Vera had told him all about Mystic Falls. With access to the Mayor's house, he took every drop of magic from Emily Bennett's crystal before digging up Giuseppe Salvatore's grave for the grimoire. He was almost tempted to take it for himself but Vera told him to leave it so he copied the book like he had done to the Gemini Coven grimoires. He was out of town by the start of the school year but he sent Caroline several gifts to start her school year. Colored writing utensils, several planners, and sticky notes. Caroline didn't like expensive gifts.

But he never received a call or text thanking him for the gifts like she had always done. He called her but she stopped answering his calls and messages.

When Kai returned to Mystic Falls the night of the founder's ball, he found Caroline with several scars on her body under heavy compulsion. It was obvious that a vampire was feeding on her. Damn it, he didn't think to give her vervain because her mother and the town council were on vervain. He had thought the Sheriff would've been dosing her daughter with the herb so he hadn't given her any. His mistake left her vulnerable.

"Caroline." She was shaking like a leaf and jumped out of her skin when he called her name. She hadn't been sleeping, he could tell by the bags under her eyes. Although well hidden by her great skills with makeup from the eyes of humans, his enhanced sight caught it.

"Kai? No, you can't be here. He'll kill you. You have to leave," she said frantically as she tried to push him away.

He quickly realized that she cut contact with him in an effort to protect him. Kai sighed and sat beside her. "He can't hurt me, Caroline. Come on, let's get out of here."

She shook her head. "No. I can't. He told me to wait here. I have to wait here." She was trembling like a leaf as tears fell from her eyes. "I'm useless, worthless, and he's going to kill me." The confident and bubbly young woman he had met before was but a shadow of her former self.

Kai pulled her in his arms and petted her hair. "It's going to be okay, Caroline. Everything will be alright. I'm going to help you."

"I can't…"

"Blondie!" Caroline's body went stiff as Damon's voice fell over her like a bucket of ice water. She dried her tears and a false smile made its way onto her face. She went to stand up, but Kai placed a hand on her shoulder and stood in front of her, shielding her from her monster. "You must be Damon Salvatore."

"And what's it to you?" A smirk formed on his face as he stood chest to chest with Kai. He glanced at Caroline cowering behind Kai. "Did you complain, blondie?"

Caroline shook her head but before she could answer, Kai spoke. "No. Don't involve the 16-year-old teenager. This is between us adults. And you know, it's pretty careless to have someone you're feeding on walking around in public with bite marks on her skin in a town full of vampire hunters. Is it a claiming thing?" Kai waved his hand and shook his head. "You know what, don't answer that. Here's how this is going to go: I'm taking Caroline with me and you're going to leave her out of your schemes."

"No. This is how things are going to go. I'm going to break your neck and then I'll drain blondie dry." Blood welled in his eyes and he flashed his fangs. "I'll do what I want, when I want, and there's nothing you can do to stop me." He stepped forward to lunge at Kai but Damon found himself in immeasurable pain. He cried out, clutching his head as he began bleeding out of his eyes and ears.

Kai released a sigh. "Vampires. You may be at the top of the food chain but most of you are pretty stupid. Lunging at me when I made it obvious I knew you were a vampire. Seriously, man, use your brain. If I'm a human, I'm either a vampire hunter hiding a stake or a witch. Can you guess which one?" Kai decreased the intensity of his attack as he crouched down to face the shaking and bleeding vampire. "And you think you're so bad, Damon. You think you're the most dangerous person in the world, but you're nothing but a weak," -he flicked his hand and sliced Damon's chest with his magic- "insecure," -another slash- "and impulsive" -another slash- "little boy playing at vampire. I'm actually surprised someone older and more experienced hasn't killed you yet with your attitude. You know, I'm a pretty laid back guy, not very violent," -his voice hardened as he said, "But you hurt my friend. You hurt Caroline. You will regurgitate every drop of blood you ever took from her." Damon began throwing up blood as Kai continued the pain infliction spell on his body. "You will stay away from Caroline. You will not try to harm her in any way." Having lost every drop of blood in his body, Damon was almost at the point of desiccation. "Be grateful, Damon. If you had killed my friend, you would've found yourself at my mercy, tortured for years, before I would do you the favor of ripping your heart out." With a flick of his wrist, he snapped Damon's neck. Kai fixed his suit jacket and groaned as the blood on the ground had run over his Italian leather shoes. "Stefan Salvatore."

Stefan cautiously walked out of the shadows of the trees. He gave the witch a wide berth. After witnessing what he had done to Damon, he knew he wouldn't stand a chance against the witch.

"Handle your brother and keep him away from Caroline unless you want his head delivered to you in a box." His eyes bore into Stefan, giving the vegetarian vampire a minor headache that served as nothing more than a threat. "You compelled Caroline to drink vervain and you were going to let Damon feed from her in an effort to incapacitate him."

"What?" Caroline could finally stand. She was in shock at first when Kai brought Damon to his knees and when he said he was a witch. She found great satisfaction in the vampire's pain, knowing that he could feel at least a fraction of her pain like when he would feed on her and threaten her. With him lying there, unconscious, she felt relief. But she wasn't expecting Stefan to have used her like a lamb for slaughter. "What… how? You knew." It was a statement of fact confirmed by the shame on Stefan's face as he tried to avoid her eyes. "Why didn't you do anything to help me?"

"I couldn't let him hurt Elena."

Tears fell from Caroline's eyes. "It's not okay for him to use Elena, but it's okay for him to use me. I'm the expendable one."

Kai placed a hand on Caroline's shoulder in comfort. "You didn't care that he could've killed her. Involve Caroline in your schemes again and you'll be dealing with me. Are we clear?"

Stefan nodded and quickly rushed off with his brother's temporarily dead body.

With her permission, he carried Caroline to his apartment for her to shower and rest. He gave her an overview of the supernatural and explained why she had holes in her memory. With her permission, he used magic to remove the compulsions from her mind. It was painful and she screamed, but she felt like her mind was her own once again, no matter how horrifying everything Damon did to her was.

Caroline didn't sleep that night. The only way for her mind to process the memories was through dreams. She would wake up repeatedly screaming and crying all through the night. Kai was always there to help her and offered to cast a sleeping spell to prevent her from dreaming, but she refused. Her mind was her own again and she didn't want anyone in her head ever again. When she went back to sleep, she couldn't sleep without the light on.

The next morning, Caroline woke up crying. She was tired from all the nightmares and her body felt disgusting as she could still feel the fathom touch of Damon all over her body. She wanted to scrub every cell in her body both inside and out until she was raw but she didn't want to go out with her skin red.

When she walked into the kitchen, she found Kai huffing as he ended a call. When he saw her, he smiled and pushed a mug of coffee to the other side of the kitchen counter. "I need you to feel safe, Caroline. Here, drink this. The coffee has vervain in it. Vervain is a plant also known as verbena. It prevents compulsion."

Caroline quickly took the cup of coffee and took a sip. It was hot but it was worth it to feel safe. "Thank you." She drank as much as she could before placing the mug on the counter. "What is it you wanted to tell me?"

"I'm also a vampire." Caroline's body stilled. "I've never compelled you. I thought your mother would've given you vervain to protect yourself. That's why I didn't give you any."

Caroline's brow furrowed as she looked at Kai. "Why would my mom…?"

"Caroline, the entire town council knows about vampires. In 1864, when your ancestors learned the town was infested with vampires, they rounded them up and burned them in the old Fell's Church. Since then, every one of the founding families has become vampire hunters and is constantly on vervain. The Forbes, the Gilberts, the Fells, the Lockwoods, and even your pastor. They all know about vampires. They cover the vampire attacks up as animal attacks."

"Oh, my God. Oh, my God." Caroline's mind was moving a mile a minute as she thought back to every memory she could remember. Her father's business trips, her mother's long hours, the animal attacks, the whispers in the house and the quick changes of conversation whenever she entered the room. But why not tell her about vampires. It would've made her more careful so she could've protected herself. No one else would do it for her.

Even though she wanted to panic, Caroline was good at compartmentalizing. She could panic later. She needed more information on the supernatural world so she could protect herself. She took a deep breath and turned to Kai. "Okay, I can panic later. Tell me everything.

"I'm a Siphoner witch-vampire hybrid, known as a Heretic. I was turned in 1992 on my 20th birthday." He explained the difference between Inherent Witches and Siphoner Witches and Heretics. He gave her a copy of the key to his apartment, which vampires can't enter since it's under Vera's name. He gave her vervain seeds for her to plant to grow her own batch but in the meantime he gave her several products that contain extract from tea to body lotion. He gave her five vials of his blood to use in an emergency if she was ever heavily injured. The last thing he gave to Caroline was the business card of a psychiatrist in Richmond to help her deal with her trauma.

Even though Stefan had locked him in and he lost control over Caroline, Damon was able to manipulate Zac into opening the door. After killing Zac and the druggies at the cemetery, he went for Caroline. But whenever he approached her, he felt the same debilitating pain in his head as he felt when the witch cast a spell on him. He couldn't approach her without ending up on his knees while bleeding from every hole in his body. He left her alone.

Caroline gave Stefan a wide berth. He tried to talk to her but Kai had told her about Stefan's control problem and being a ripper. He even tried to compel her to forget so she wouldn't tell her mom and Elena about him and his brother. She pretended the compulsion worked to get him to back off since she had a bad reaction to the compulsion. Even though vervain kept the compulsion from taking hold, she could still feel Stefan invading her mind, his commands like whispers in her ears as he tried to place a blindfold over her mind.

Caroline decided to make an appointment with the psychiatrist after she had almost had a psychotic break in the middle of the street, hearing Damon's voice telling her how worthless she was and how he would kill her. The psychiatrist, Luna, was a vampire and had gone through a similar experience as a human. She willingly became a vampire to regain control of her life as it was her only way of breaking the compulsion. Caroline was glad the psychiatrist was understanding and sympathetic to her experiences so she continued to drive to see Luna every Friday after school. Even if it meant she didn't get to hang out with her friends.

Caroline hid the vials of Kai's blood in her room but kept one on her at all times. Even when she changed purses, she kept moving the vial.

After pulling herself from the car, still dizzy and in pain all over, she found the vial she had in her pocket and quickly drank the blood. She could feel her insides knitting themselves back together and her bones painfully popping back in their place as it became easier to breathe. There must've been a lot of damage since she passed out from a headache.

When she woke up, she found 'Elena' with curly hair… "Katherine." She gasped but before she could run, she found a pillow being pressed onto her face. Kai had warned her about Elena's vampire mom and vampire ancestor who shared her face. Even if she knew, she still wasn't fast enough to escape.

Kai was turned by Vera's IE 3.0. Caroline, having been turned by his blood, became his newborn Offspring. The side effect was the small telepathic connection between Procreator and Offspring. In her distress, Caroline mentally called out to her Procreator. He sensed her and quickly made his way to Mystic Falls using a portal.

When he arrived, he found Caroline in tears, crouched down against the wall as the Bennett witch lashed out with her magic.

"That's enough." He grasped Bonnie's hand and caused her to cry out when he began to painfully siphon from her as he extinguished the fire spell.

"Kai." Caroline launched herself at him.

"I'm right here, Caroline." He wrapped his arms around her shoulders to comfort the younger girl. "I'm here to help you." He hoisted her into his arms and turned to leave but was stopped by the doppelganger and her boyfriend.

"Wait, you can't take her."

He looked at the girl then looked at Stefan, who tried to push the doppelganger behind him as if to protect her from him. Kai almost scoffed. As if he'd hurt Klaus' sacrifice.

"Caroline is the one who called me. I'm taking her somewhere safe to teach her to control her bloodlust."

"Stefan can…" Elena began but Kai interrupted her.

"Stefan is a ripper with barely any control. He'll teach Caroline his bunny diet and when she smells human blood, she won't be able to control herself. I won't have my friend turning into a ripper.." He glared at Bonnie. "And I doubt you'll be able to get your witch friend to make her a daylight ring."

Elena and Caroline turned to look at their friend. "Bonnie…"

"She killed someone, Elena. I won't do it." Bonnie couldn't stand to look at Caroline so she focused on Kai. She didn't understand what he did to her but she felt a sharp pain on her wrist. Then, she felt her magic slowly leaving her.

"Get me out of here, please," Caroline said through her tears as Kai summoned the portal and disappeared with Caroline.

The next morning, Caroline woke far from Mystic Falls. Kai brought a box of jewelry to Caroline and she chose a beautiful and simplistic band with gold floral filigree inlay between two silver bands. There were cubic zirconia between each of the flowers around the band except for the center, where the lapis stone was placed.

Kai began by teaching Caroline anatomy so she could easily find major veins and arteries to feed from the neck and wrist.

"Caroline, I need to know if you're going to be able to compel someone," Kai asked before they left the apartment.

Caroline froze. "What do you mean?"

"Compulsion is important to survival as a vampire. If you don't plan on killing the person you feed on, the best thing to do is compel them to forget you ever fed on them."

Caroline didn't want to do that. She understood why compulsion was necessary when feeding but she also understood how disorienting it could be to have memories missing. "Why don't you show me how you'd do it?"

Kai led her to the downtown area full of offices. He taught her to watch the positions of the cameras and wait in the shadows for someone leaving work late. Once he found his prey, Kai compelled the man not to scream before biting into the man's neck. He took several gulps but as the man began to slump down against the wall he stopped. Caroline watched as Kai sliced his index finger open with a fang and passed the blood along the bite marks on the man's neck to heal them. He then compelled the man again to forget being fed on, get something to eat before taking a taxi home. "When you wake up in the morning, you won't remember anything to do with me. You'll think that you were just really tired after a long day's work."

Caroline followed his example. "You won't feel any pain," she added to her compulsion. Unlike Kai, she hadn't yet learned how to bite without causing any pain. The taste of the blood on her tongue was a taste she couldn't describe but it was the most delicious thing she had ever tasted. She just wanted more. Like a juice box, she wanted to drink and drink until there was nothing left. Only then would she be satisfied.

But… "If you kill anyone, I won't be cleaning the body up for you. You'll have to do it yourself. You'll have to take the body and find a place to dump it, where it won't be found."

Caroline didn't feel like dragging a dead body around Richmond to find a place to get rid of it. It would be tedious and unclean. Not to mention, this person could also have family that would miss him. If she killed him and got rid of the body, they'd never know what happened to him. It could've happened to her. She could've been killed by Damon and dumped in a shallow ditch somewhere and her mother would never know what happened to her.

Caroline removed her teeth from the man's neck, healed the mark with a bit of her blood, and told him to forget her before sending him on his way.

"You brought me to a strip club." Caroline was surrounded by both men and women dancing on the stage. Kai approached two men, whom she could obviously tell were vampires, who stood guard over a back room. Kai showed them a strange medallion before they stepped aside and allowed him and Caroline to pass. Kai entered a code on the electronic door before moving into an area where she could no longer hear the loud bass from outside.

"This is a vampire club. The apostrophe is actually a sign to vampires that this club has blood available."

A woman, a human, came with a clipboard after they sat at the private booth. "Welcome to Vee's. You, Mr. Chris W, might be a patron at our club, but your friend is not. We don't offer services to anyone who is not a patron. Please fill out this form and I will bring your medallion."

After Caroline filled out the form under the name of Candice K, the woman returned with her medallion and gave her several rules to follow. She had the choice of blood from the vein, bagged, or vegetarian. If they want from the vein, they could also get a lap dance, since it's still a strip club, but they would have to pay for both the blood and the vein. They also had to pay based on the amount of blood they drank, but they were not allowed to take enough to kill the employees. Compulsion was not allowed since the club already handled that.

Caroline had her fill from three veins and two bags while Kai had five veins. He paid for them before leaving the club. When they returned to his apartment, he explained that there was a chain of clubs in every major US city, and at least one in every state. He taught her to hunt because the vampire clubs are usually expensive and they wouldn't always be available to her.

The next day, he showed her how to steal blood bags from blood banks and hospitals. Since Kai traveled to Mystic Falls often, he has a compelled employee in the blood bank who regularly fixes the records and leaves a few bags of blood aside for him every day and delivers them to a storage locker for him.

Kai also told her about his blood-selling business. He owns a company of blood collection centers all over North America where humans go to donate and sell blood. It's a legal business, but instead of the blood being used for research, it's sold to vampires on the dark web. To ensure that they always have enough supply, in every center he owns, the humans are compelled to return to donate blood once every 56 days in accordance with Red Cross guidelines. But since the blood isn't for human blood transfusions but for vampires, they don't have to screen for diseases so they have a larger pool of donors.

By showing her how to order blood online, in addition to hunting, blood clubs, and the blood banks, he gave her multiple choices for feeding should one or another be unavailable to her.

In three days, Caroline was in control of her bloodlust. Her eyes still changed when she was exposed to an open wound, but the fact that she didn't lunge for the person made her better than most baby vampires.

But when she returned home, Caroline was attacked by Katherine and told to spy on Elena and the Salvatore brothers. The last thing she wanted to do was be around Damon and Stefan but she had no choice when Katherine threatened her mother. When she told Kai, he brought her back to Richmond during the weekend, to an MMA club this time.

It was a Sunday and the club was closed to the public, but Kai had the key. Before her eyes could even adjust to the darkness, she sensed another person -a vampire- in the area just before someone whooshed past her and pinned Kai to a wall.

"Fancy seeing you here, mate. I heard you went to my club last week, but you didn't come to visit me. You're breaking my cold, dead heart, Malachai." He smirked at the scorn in Kai's eyes when he used the younger vampire's full name.

Caroline went to try to help her friend, but Kai simply shook his head. He pushed the dark-haired man away from him and straightened himself out. "I didn't need you then. I just needed to show her the ropes." Kai motioned to Caroline. "Caroline, meet my friend, Lorenzo. He owns Vee's along with this place."

Enzo looked her over, but not in a lecherous way before he took her hand and kissed it. "Hello, gorgeous."

"Um, are you flirting with me?" Caroline was uncertain of his reason since she didn't feel like he was hitting on her in any way.

"Oh, no. If I was, my lovely wife would have me hanging by my balls."

The lights came on before a dark-skinned woman joined them. "Damn right." She nodded to Kai. "You don't write, you don't call, you don't visit."

"Come on Maggie, you know I'm a busy man."

Maggie and Enzo exchanged glances, knowing full well that Kai tends to avoid social gatherings. "Whatever you say."

Kai just sighed. "Caroline, once again meet my friends, Lorenzo St. John and his wife, Maggie James."

"Nice to meet you," Maggie said, extending her hand to Caroline who took it to shake. As she looked up and down, she said to Caroline. "You're very new, aren't you?"

"How do you know?" Caroline asked.

"Older vampires usually have more time to acclimatize to their new bodies. Certain things that humans do unconsciously, we tend to lose those over time. Sometimes, we even forget to breathe."

"Oh," Caroline breathed.

"She's only two weeks old but she's gotten attention from Katherine Pierce because of her very annoying friends who tend to attract trouble like flies to honey," Kai said and Caroline shrugged sheepishly.

"The infamous Katherine Pierce. What did you do to piss her off, gorgeous?" Enzo asked as he threw his arm over his wife's shoulder, bringing her closer to him.

"Nothing. She smothered me with a pillow in my hospital room and now she wants me to spy on the Salvatores for her. She's in love with Stefan, likes to play with Damon, she's tormenting my best friend. She's threatening my mom if I don't help her. Elena's my friend. I can't just not help her… and her boyfriends."

Maggie looked up at her husband when she felt him still at the sound of Damon's name. His former friend's betrayal was still fresh on his mind. He had resigned himself to die in that fire. But in the end, he was saved by Vera, who killed the rest of Augustine who wanted to still use him in their experiments. Thanks to Vera, he was able to find Maggie, who had also been searching for him, saving her just in time from Damon.

He looked down and smiled at Maggie when he felt her squeeze his hand in comfort. After that day in 1960, Maggie turned to become a vampire and they married not long after. It was all thanks to Vera, whom they gave their loyalty to. Damon Salvatore no longer mattered to them.

"Unfortunately for you, Katherine is 500 years older than you and vampires become stronger with age."

Kai rolled his eyes. "But you can teach her some basic self-defense."

"We'll help," Maggie said. "But not for you." She looked at Kai. "For the poor girl." She looked at Caroline. "We're usually closed on Sundays, but we'll make an exception for you."

"You guys really own this place?" Caroline asked. "And the vampire blood club?"

"Course, luv. We have since the 60s. We, vampires, also need money. You can't live on compulsion alone, especially not in this digital age."

"And Kai has his business selling blood bags to vampires." SHe thought about the Salvatores. "Wait, Stefan goes to high school and Damon spends most of the day drinking at the grill. How the hell do they maintain their lifestyle?"

"Investing old family money." Enzo shrugged. "They've probably been doing it for several decades now. Our family doesn't have that luxury."

Caroline looked between Kai and Enzo. "You're related."

"Not…" Before Kai could say anything, Enzo pulled him into a tight hug and said. "We're brothers. Our mother owns several small businesses that cater to supernaturals as well as a research hospital."

Kai pinched Enzo's hand and removed it from his shoulder. "I'd consider us unofficially adopted. And I consider Vera to be more of a sister than a mother. Enzo was taken captive and experimented on by humans after the Second World War. Vera saved him in 1958. I met Vera in 1988. I already explained siphoners to you. While my siblings, like most Inherent Witches such as your friend Bonnie, were born with their own magic, I wasn't. The Gemini Coven is known for their twins and when we turn 22, there's this ritual called the Merge where the weaker twin is absorbed by the stronger. Being born a Siphoner, my coven shunned me. If I had merged with my twin, I'd have taken all her magic and killed her, and become the coven leader. Siphoners are the result of a mutation caused by the Merge. I was shunned. I wasn't allowed to practice magic. When I met Vera, she allowed me to siphon from her, and every weekend, we met so she could help me practice my magic. On my 17th birthday, she gave me this-" he held up his wrist to show her his talisman on his right wrist "-It's a talisman. It stores magic so I can siphon from it any time I want. All those spells I've cast have been thanks to this bracelet. A week after my birthday, I left with her. Leaving with Vera probably saved me since I later found out that the Gemini Coven has a tendency to put Siphoners and Heretics in prison worlds."

"Prison worlds?" Caroline asked.

"It's a pocket dimension created by the coven through magic. The same day will repeat forever and it's bound to its prisoners so they can never die."

Caroline's eyes went wide. "That's horrible. Why don't they just kill them? Having to repeat the same day forever seems like a fate worse than death." She whispered. "And your dad is the coven leader but he was going to imprison you? And I thought my parents were awful."

"Oh, that's not the worst part. My parents continued having kids after I left. In 1991, another set of Gemini Twins were born. They'll likely have to perform the Merge in a few years, for the sake of the coven and all that."

"Alright, that's enough of that. You brought her here to train." Maggie took Caroline's hands and pulled her deeper into the gym. "Vampire 101: Older means stronger. Katherine is over 500 years old. You're two weeks old. You'll never be able to beat her one on one. You'll need to be smart and crafty. The best you can do is try to incapacitate your opponent by snapping their neck and killing them. Or if you're not partial to homicide, you can use the chance to run away." She pulled what looked to be pepper spray out of her pocket.

"Pepper Spray?"

"It's concentrated vervain spray. Great for stunning a vampire to get the chance to run or hide." She turned and sprayed Kai directly in the eyes, causing him to scream and fall to the ground clawing at his face. He quickly ran out of the room as Maggie and Enzo shared a laugh. "See, it works wonders. You can buy it online. People in the know use a lot of keywords such as leeches or mosquitoes to refer to vampires. Another name for vervain is verbena so if you see 'Concentrated verbena spray for mosquitoes', it's this. Keep it." She threw the canister to Caroline who caught it, careful not to spray herself.

"Damn it, Maggie." Kai returned after having obviously washed the vervain off his face.

She shrugged. "I was only showing her that even the great Kai Parker can be brought to his knees." She turned back to Caroline who was chuckling at the back and forth between the two.

Enzo took over Caroline's lesson. "We'll start with anatomy. In vampires, every sense is enhanced, including touch senses, which means our pain sensors are more sensitive than a regular human's. You can cause enough pain to shock a vampire for you to get the upper hand to snap their necks or stake them or rip their heart out." He brought Caroline to a wooden dummy. "The best places to strike are the toes, kneecaps, groin, the lower spine, the neck, the ears, the nose, and the eyes. The feet have 26 bones. Step on the toes, grind them to dust and it'll take a while to heal. It's just enough to shock a vampire to allow you to snap their necks and escape. Kneecaps. Break them, snap the neck, run. Same thing with the groin. An attack on the spine will paralyze the vampire. And the neck is obvious. It's the best way to incapacitate a vampire and leave them defenseless. A snapped neck will take a while to heal depending on age. An older vampire will be out for a few minutes, a younger vamp can be out for hours. You seen Fight Club?"

Caroline nodded. Although she loved romance movies as much as the next girl, she also liked watching senseless violence on TV. It helped her channel her more negative emotions toward the action movie villains rather than the people in her life she found annoying but couldn't exactly kill as a teenager. But now, even though she could, she wouldn't kill someone just because they're annoying her.

"Remember when Edward Norton punched Brad Pitt in the ear? It wasn't scripted, but the hit shocked Pitt and he gave a genuine reaction because of the nerves in the area. Your balance is controlled by the fluid in your ears, which also amplifies sound. Once again it'll shock someone enough to allow you the upper hand. And with vampire strength, you can break the bones enough to send them into the brain. I think it's obvious why you'll attack the nose and ears. They're weak spots even human MMA fighters exploit."

"Come on, let's get started."

Kai remained in Mystic Falls with Caroline. The only way the Procreator could keep his Offspring out of trouble was by ensuring he was there to help them deal with the Katherine Pierce problem. He allowed Caroline to give the vampire the Moonstone, which incapacitated her the moment she touched it, then she locked her in the tomb she was supposed to have been in since 1864. There was peace for a while but then the doppelganger got herself kidnapped and they had to find and rescue her. While the Salvatores hid with the doppelganger, Kai fought Elijah. He didn't expose himself yet as a vampire, so he only used his magic to incapacitate Elijah by breaking his neck before casting a sleeping spell on the vampire to keep him down until the sunset.

But then, Damon had to come along and act like he knows best by staking Elijah in the heart through a wall. Kai kept his mouth shut and didn't say anything about Elijah being an Original or the fact that a regular stake wasn't going to do anything to him. In fact, Kai was almost certain the sleeping spell would wear off just before Elijah would begin to recover from desiccation. But whatever. Kai just returned to Mystic falls through his portal and left the Salvatores to drive the hours back.

Not a day later, Damon came yelling at him that Elijah was alive. "Why do you think I cast a sleeping spell on him instead of staking him? Originals can't be killed with a stake to the heart."

And then he went to piss off a vampire-hating werewolf on a full moon and his girlfriend got bitten. Then Caroline came to him with a guilty and desperate look on her face. "So, Damon put you up to this?"

"Well… no, not really." When he gave her an incredulous stare, she caved. "Fine, he called and asked me if I could ask you since Bonnie couldn't find anything and the werewolf who bit her, Jules, won't tell us anything either. And I just feel really bad for Rose. I mean, she's been running for 500 years and she just got her freedom only to die a day later. So?"

Kai sighed. His blonde Offspring was turning him soft. He grabbed his jacket and followed her out to her car. When they arrived at the Salvatore Boarding House, Elena was running down the stairs with Rose on her heels. Before the vampire could lunge for the doppleganger, Kai paralyzed her as Caroline pulled Elena out of her way. He levitated the vampire back to her room upstairs.

"I'm going to die, aren't I?" Rose said when she returned to herself.

"There's no cure for a werewolf bite," Kai said. "But I can help you. So long as you give me your word you'll leave Mystic Falls."

Rose closed her eyes. "I don't want to die so I'll give you my word I will leave Mystic Falls."

"Good." Kai turned her over and placed his hand where the bite had begun to fester. With his eyes closed, he siphoned away the venom, which caused Rose to scream before the infection healed into smooth skin.

The older vampire panted as she touched her back, where the bite had just been. "How?"

"I'm a Siphoner witch. Werewolves are creatures made by magic. Their venom is also made of magic, so I just removed the magic in the venom." He placed a hand on Rose's shoulder. "Now, you should know I can also siphon the magic that keeps vampires alive. I get it. You've been running for 500 years and want to settle down in a nice little town now that you're free. But Elijah never makes a deal without a loophole. He gave you your freedom but that doesn't mean you're free from Klaus." Rose's eyes widened and she trembled in fear. "Klaus will be coming to Mystic Falls when he finds out about the doppelganger." He could see Caroline and Elena wanting to argue but he cut them off. "And it's a when, not if, and he finds you here, he'll either rip your heart out or torture you for centuries for your part in Katerina's escape. Now that I've saved you, I don't feel like letting you die. Unless you have a death wish in which case I can help you with that." He painfully siphoned from her, causing the older vampire to scream and writhe on the bed. "Now, are you going to stay or leave town? I'll even give you a daylight ring."

"Please," Rose cried. "I promise I'll leave. I don't want to die. I'll leave."

"Good." Kai removed his hand. "Come to my apartment before dawn tomorrow. I'll make you the daylight ring. And seriously be smarter when you're going into hiding. Go someplace Klaus wouldn't set foot in. I hear India's not so bad and at least change your appearance slightly with a bit of hair dye. I think you'd look great as a blonde. Geez, really. Most vampires are idiots."

Kai left with Caroline, who drove him back to his apartment.

Rose spent the evening with Damon after telling him she was leaving the next morning. Rose followed Kai's advice and changed her wardrobe slightly and ditched the leather jacket for a colorful long-sleeved midi dress, a tote bag, high heels, and sunglasses. She also dyed her hair blonde.

As the sun shone in through his window, Kai made her a daylight necklace that could easily be hidden under her clothes. He approached the vampire at the door and handed her the necklace along with a folder. "Here. There's some information in there that'll help you if you ever need it." He held a shoulder bag out to her. "And this is a cooler full of blood bags to help you while you're on the road. If you're staying in the country, head to Salem Massachusetts. When you get there, head to the Witch's Brew and tell the host that Kai Parker sent you. If you're not, then you're on your own."

The vampire put the daylight necklace around her neck and vanished with a whispered, "Thank you."

He was planning on relaxing for the rest of the day, but Mystic Falls never stays quiet for long. That same evening, there was a small whisper in the back of his head of someone calling his name. Kai only had one Offspring and it was Caroline. Kai made his way to the Gilbert house to ask Elena about Caroline, but she had no idea where her best friend was. Then, the Salvatores called with news that the werewolves had Caroline and were hiding out in the woods. Idiots. The lot of them were idiots.

Now that he knew the wolves were hiding somewhere in the woods, he could focus more on finding Caroline. He returned to the apartment and used her hairbrush to cast a tracking spell. The spell led him to a rundown RV in a clearing. The Salvatore brothers were arguing with the wolves. Kai stepped in the middle of the two groups. "Well, I don't care about Tyler, or the curse, or any of you, really. I want Caroline." He turned to face the wolves. "Hand her over, or I can just take her over your dead body. You know what, I'd actually prefer to do that."

The female wolf -that bitch- whistled and a pack of wolves came out of the shadows. Kai raised his hands in the air, levitating two of the wolves off the ground and breaking their necks. He let them fall in front of Jules and Brady before launching an incendia at another wolf, burning her alive. "Anyone else wants to die?" The fight broke out. Most of the pack gave Kai a wide berth, deciding it was better to handle the vampires. In the chaos, Tyler had gone inside the RV, where Kai could hear Caroline asking him for help. Kai growled as he approached Jules and Brady, breaking several bones in their legs and arms to keep them out of his way as he went to Caroline.

He growled at the sight of his Offspring in pain, crouched down in a cage like an animal. He punched Tyler so hard in his anger, causing the young pup to fall unconscious. When he touched the cage, the vervain burned his hands, but he pulled the door off its hinges and threw it into the side of the RV. "I've got you, Caroline."

"Kai." She allowed him to help her out of the cage and take her through the portal to his apartment. He could care less about the Salvatores.

He made sure Caroline was alright. For some reason, in the few months he's known her, Caroline had become very important to him. She became like a little sister to him, much like Vera had become his big sister. In many ways, she was similar to Vera: kind, loyal, hard-working but also fun-loving. She also reminds him of Olivia because of her appearance. He's had spies watching over his younger siblings, especially the twins for years now. He even sometimes went to see them with his own eyes, even though he remained at a distance. Both Caroline and Liv shared blond, curly hair, with similar height and figure. He wasn't able to always help his younger sister, but he would help Caroline so long as he was able.

After learning that Elijah had killed the Wolves, he felt better about leaving Caroline alone in Mystic Falls. He still had a business to run.

I know. I suck for allowing Caroline to be raped by Damon. Someone in the comments talked about Caroline's other supernatural sides protecting her, but untriggered werewolves can still be compelled and Caroline's nymph side is sealed away. And in my story, Caroline's wolf isn't untriggered, it's dormant (that's going to be important later). She didn't know about the supernatural and ignorance gets people killed.

So the changes: Caroline is not as close to Stefan as she was in the show. Stefan never taught Caroline to hunt so they never became close like best friends. Caroline is still helping them for Elena's sake. Also, Lucy Bennett never came to Mystic Falls since Katherine was incapacitated before she could call on her. But she was still able to manipulate Tyler to trigger his curse before she was taken care of. And the shenanigans that happened at the masquerade never took place. But Elena still got taken when she was returning home that night.
