Meet The Mikaelsons Part 2
Summary: The rest of the third season
Notes: Caroline's friends still prepared a birthday party for her as they've been trying to mend their bridges.
Analytical Madness gave me permission to use his rewritten scene of the fight between Kol and Damon at the ball. Check it out. It's the fight we deserved, befitting an Original such as Kol Mikaelson. ((5) Kol Mikaelson vs Damon Salvatore - Rewriting Inconsistent Fight Scenes - YouTube)
Place: Mikaelson Mansion, Mystic Falls
Date: October 10, 2010
Klaus looks down at Mindy's headless corpse with an unreadable expression on his face. His blood was boiling inside. How dare Stefan come into his home to attack him, to kill his pack? Although he hadn't been expecting them to be able to put up much of a fight against Mikael, he was expecting more from the hybrids against younger vampires like Stefan.
A hybrid named Daniel walked in with Mindy's head in a bag. "What do you want me to do with her body?"
He looked at Daniel for a long moment. Even with their new abilities, they still carried themselves like wolves, as if they forget they have the greater strength and senses of vampires in addition to their wolves. "Just get rid of it. Burn it. I honestly don't care, Daniel.
As Daniel walked out, Tyler entered. "You called? I'm here. What happened?"
"What happened is Stefan had two paths in front of him and he chose the one that made me angry. I need you to help me do something about that." Klaus gritted his teeth. He didn't like being backed into a corner. Stefan took his family from him while they were vulnerable and unable to protect themselves.
Although he'd never admit that it was his own fault they got poached not only because he trusted Stefan with their location, but also because he daggered them. But to Klaus, daggering his siblings was always for their own good, even though it made them more vulnerable to his enemies. And it seemed he would never admit his faults, nor did he learn his lesson because he daggered Rebekah again and left her in her room, unprotected, in a house with no protection wards or invitation barrier. He wasn't thinking he could use Rebekah's help to find his siblings, nor was he thinking that Stefan could once again enter the house and take Rebekah's body as well.
No, he never thought of the consequences of the daggers. Nope. The daggers were for their own good.
"Can't you just leave me out of it?"
"What would be the point in that?"
"Seriously man, can't you just get one of your other hybrids to do your bidding? I lost my friends, my girlfriend."
Images of the bubbly blonde played like a reel in his head. Her smile, her confident strut, her body pressed against his. He was fascinated by her. In his thousand years, he had never been so taken with someone, especially someone so young. He admired her fearlessness.
Vera had told him of how Caroline's friends had treated her when she became a vampire. He knew she, more often than not, ended up as collateral damage for the Salvatores' plots in saving Elena. Yet she was still so loyal to her friends.
He wanted her loyalty for himself. Since he met her, many times he had imagined how it would've been had she been a part of his family a thousand years before. He could picture Elijah and Finn being quite proud of her control of her bloodlust. Rebekah would've had a female friend and she would be just as enthusiastic as Kol to learn as much as she could about their new state. And as for him… he wanted her by his side. He wanted her to have comforted him, to have stayed by his side through all the pain of his first werewolf transformation. Through all the fear he had, as he cried while his bones broke one by one, she would've been there with him, wishing words of comfort and encouragement in his ears. And as he was shivering, naked in the forest the morning after, she would've run to him with a blanket to cover him, to soothe his pains. How different would the past thousand years have been if she had been a part of his family.
He hadn't been so taken with a woman since Aurora.
"Surely you haven't fallen for this child have you, Niklaus? She is weak!" Mikael growled as she thrust his hand into Caroline's back, causing the young vampire to cry out in pain when the man grasped her heart. "You should have plunged that stake into me through her. I thought I taught you better, boy. Love makes you soft. Love makes you weak."
No. He wasn't in love with her. He couldn't be. Why would he fall in love with a 17-year-old girl? She wasn't even yet a woman. He had seen so many just like her. He had been with many women like her: young with fair skin and curly blonde hair. There was nothing special about her.
Klaus Mikaelson did not love. He was not in love with Caroline Forbes. How could he be in love with her? She was weak. Nothing more than a baby vampire. And she would not be his weakness. He could see Mikael easily removing her heart. He would not be moved. Even if Stefan had cut off her head like he did Mindy, he would simply have her head and body burned. She'd be no different than anyone else.
He shook his head to banish the image as he turned to Tyler. "Right, your, uh, your girlfriend." I'm not in love with her. "Um, about her...I need you to bite her." She's weak.
"What?"
"Don't make me repeat myself." She's just a baby vampire.
"A hybrid bite will kill a vampire."
Love makes you weak. "Yeah. Yeah, I know exactly what it will do." Mercy makes you weak. "Uh, Stefan pushed me too far, so I'm pushing back." I am not weak.
"I'm not biting Caroline."
"Tyler, I've been supernaturally blessed with the good fortune of a sire bond to you. So, one could consider this me putting your undying loyalty to the test." He was testing the young wolf's love for Caroline. He would never hurt her if he truly loved her.
"What the hell is wrong with you? I'm not hurting Caroline."
"All right. All right. I'm disappointed, but you know, it's your choice, free will and all that. I'll find another way to strike at Stefan. You can go now," he dismissed, knowing full well Tyler would be unable to resist the sire bond.
The moment they received the call from Sheriff Forbes, Maggie and Enzo knew immediately that something was wrong with Caroline. Pushing their supernatural speed to the limit, they ran back to Mystic Falls faster than any car could carry them. When they stopped, Maggie ran into the young girl's room while Enzo stayed in the living room, dialing Kai's number. The phone went straight to voicemail. He dialed Kai again on Caroline's phone instead, but still, the phone went to voicemail.
Maggie was lying on the bed beside Caroline, gently caressing her hair as she wiped the sweat from her brow. "It's going to be fine, Caroline. Everything will be alright, sweetie. Enzo is calling Kai and he'll heal you right up."
"Mom, you're home early today." She was hallucinating. "I made dinner. Can we eat together?"
Enzo and Sheriff Forbes just then came to the door. Maggie reluctantly removed herself from Caroline's side as Liz took her place. She went to talk to her husband. "He's not answering his phone. Not from me, or Sheriff Forbes or Caroline."
"Something's wrong then. He'd never miss a call from Caroline," Maggie whispered. "Even if the connection is muddled due to her state, he would've felt at least a tug."
"I know." They approached Matt and asked him what happened and the human boy explained everything to them. Although they were wrathful, they remained cautious as they ran toward Klaus's house. Enzo was only a century old and Maggie wasn't even 50 yet. And they were just regular vampires. There was nothing they could do to Klaus to get back at him for ordering Tyler to bite Caroline.
The two shared a glance and a short kiss when they arrived at the door. They intertwined their fingers and stepped forward, knocking on the door.
"Enter." They heard Klaus through the door.
Their hearts were beating out of their chests but they remained calm in front of the Hybrid. "Ah, my friends," he said as he looked up at them from the house plans on the table. "What can I do for you?"
"We want to make a deal," Maggie said. Enzo had a sharp tongue that tended to get him into trouble. So in sensitive situations, Maggie was usually the one who spoke while Enzo would observe and step in should he need to. "We'll help you find your family. We'll do anything you need from us to find your family in return for your blood to heal Caroline."
Klaus looked up from the papers.
When Tyler came to him complaining about how he had bitten Caroline, Klaus didn't care. He was planning on letting her die just to prove to himself that he was not in love with her. It took all his control not to immediately go feed her his blood to save her. But he remained at his house, waiting silently for the inevitable news of her death even though his heart felt like it was being squeezed by a vice.
He forced his feet to remain rooted to the floor. He forced himself not to step out that door.
He was expecting the Sheriff and maybe the doppelganger or even the Bennett witch to come to ask for his blood to save the baby vampire. But he wasn't expecting Enzo and Maggie. "While your loyalty is quite admirable, there's something I don't understand. How do you two, Kai, and Vera know Caroline? All of you seem to care a great deal for her." He saw how Vera and the rest of her friends crowded around the baby vampire during his battle with Mikael, all of them doing their best to keep her safe. And Kai's reaction to Tyler's and Stefan's actions was extreme. All of them had extreme reactions, forming up around the blonde like a wall to keep everything that could do her harm from her.
Enzo answered this time. "Kai met her in May 2009 when Vera sent him to Mystic Falls. She had a vision the next doppelganger would be here and she sent him to verify and make preparations for you to break your curse. He met Caroline; she was his guide around town. They became good friends and kept in touch even after he left. With Elena's face attracting vampires like flies, the people around her became collateral damage, mainly the human Caroline. When Kai returned, he gave her vervain to protect herself from compulsion and several vials of vampire blood for emergencies. She was in a car accident in February and used the blood to heal herself. She was smothered in her hospital bed that night by Katherine, not only to send a message to the Salvatores but also to prepare a vampire for your sacrifice. Kai returned to Mystic Falls and brought her to us to train her to live as a vampire and protect herself." Kai's status as an Original Heretic was a secret they all kept to protect him from the Gemini Coven due to their habit of locking up Heretics in prison worlds.
"But that doesn't explain why you care so much for her."
"She's a sweet innocent girl who doesn't deserve all the shit life has put her through," Enzo replied.
Maggie squeezed his fingers to shut him up as she stepped toward Klaus. "Her parents were too busy with their official jobs and unofficial jobs as vampire hunters and neglected her. While Elena has the Salvatores and Bonnie Bennett protecting her, Caroline has no one. More often than not she ends up getting hurt. Katherine threatened her mother's life. That same mother denied her when she found out Caroline had become a vampire and preferred to have the memory compelled away. She was tortured by werewolves when Damon pissed off Jules, who later became your werewolf sacrifice. She was almost the sacrifice to break your curse. And then, her father tortured her when he found out she was a vampire. He wanted to condition her to stop drinking blood." Maggie inhaled deeply as tears welled in her eyes. She held onto her husband's hand to anchor her. "And now you're threatening her life, having Tyler bite her to send Stefan a message even though they don't even care about her. Do you really think he'd give your family back just because Caroline's life is in danger?" Tears streamed down her cheeks. "In just a few months of knowing her, a few weekends together, she became like the daughter we can never have. She has no one to protect her in the supernatural world. We love her. We want to protect her. So please, make us a deal. Please, we'll do anything. We'll help you find your family, just please, save our daughter."
Klaus was silent for several moments as he watched Enzo wipe Maggie's tears, whispering soft words to soothe her. "Love is a vampire's greatest weakness."
Maggie turned back to him, her brown eyes shining fiercely. "Yes. That may be true because right now you hold our heart, our Caroline's life, in your hands. And we're desperate. She's our weakness. But love also makes us strong because when you love someone and you know that love is reciprocated, you can do anything, because you know for certain that the person who loves you will always have your back."
"So, do we have a deal or not? You'll have our service in helping you find your family in exchange for your blood to save Caroline."
Klaus grabbed his jacket and made for the door. "We have a deal."
Klaus was faster than them. When they arrived at the door, Klaus had already been talking to Matt as the Sheriff came to the front hallway. "I know how this game works. You want something in return."
"Just your support."
Sheriff Forbes looked to Maggie and Enzo as they stepped ahead of Klaus. She knew Caroline trusted them and she could see that they also cared deeply for her daughter. She could clearly see the dried tear tracks on Maggie's face. "We made him a deal. Our help to get his family from Stefan in exchange for his blood."
"What about Kai? I know he can heal a werewolf bite," Matt said.
Klaus had not known that. He made a note to ask them about it later.
"Kai hasn't answered his phone all night. And with Caroline in danger, something must be keeping him from coming, or else he'd be here. He's likely indisposed or worse," Enzo explained. "And Vera is powerful but she can't remove werewolf venom. His blood is the only thing that can save her."
Sheriff Forbes nodded. "Come in."
Caroline opened her eyes when she heard the footsteps. Her enhanced senses were muddled as she grew weak from Tyler's bite. She met his eyes as he waltzed into the room. "Are you going to kill me?"
"On your birthday? You really think that low of me?" he asked softly.
"Yes."
Klaus removed the sheet to examine the bite. "That looks bad. My apologies, you're what's known as collateral damage. It's nothing personal." He touched her bracelet. "I love birthdays."
"Yeah." Caroline scoffed. "Aren't you like...a billion, or something?" Even though she was angry with him for having Tyler bite her, she fell into the easy banter they always had when they met.
Klaus smiled softly. "Well you have to adjust your perception of time when you become a vampire, Caroline. Celebrate the fact that you're no longer bound by trivial human conventions. You're free."
"No, I'm dying."
Klaus sat on the bed next to her and whispered to her, "And I could let you die, if that's what you want. If you really believe your existence has no meaning. I thought about it myself, once or twice over the centuries, truth will be told. But I'll let you in on a little secret. There is a whole world out there, waiting for you. Great cities and art and music, genuine beauty. And you can have all of it. You can have a thousand more birthdays. All you have to do is ask."
Caroline looked at him, her eyes welling with tears. "I don't wanna die."
Klaus pulled up his sleeve and lifted her head up in his arms. He positioned himself behind her as he offered her his wrist. "There you go, sweetheart. Have at it." He couldn't help the sharp breath that left his lungs as she bit into his wrist and began to drink his blood. It was the first time in a thousand years he offered his blood from the vein to someone he didn't mean to turn. A shot of adrenaline rushed through him as her teeth punctured his vein and she took in his blood. The feeling was almost euphoric. He caressed her hair as he whispered, "Happy birthday Caroline."
When Caroline woke up, the festering bite was gone and her skin had returned to smooth skin. There was a little, navy blue, rectangular, velvet-covered box with a note inscribed "From Klaus" on the nightstand. Inside the box was a beautiful and expensive-looking silver bracelet studded with diamonds in an infinity pattern.
"Caroline?" her mother came to the door and quickly pulled her into a hug.
"Mom, I'm okay." She hugged her mother back.
"Thank goodness. I have to tell Maggie and Enzo."
"What about them?" Caroline asked, confused.
"Maggie and Enzo were here last night. I called them when I couldn't get a hold of Kai or Vera. They made a deal with Klaus to give you his blood to save your life in return for their help in finding his family." Caroline inhaled sharply. "Here." Her mother gave her a card and a small box with wrapping paper. The card read, "You didn't tell us it was your birthday so we had to quickly get a gift for you. We'd be very offended if you didn't accept it. You deserve the world, Caroline. Have a happy birthday and many more."
Enzo and Maggie didn't want to be working under Klaus longer than they had to be. They knew the only reason for the coffins to remain hidden from Klaus' witches was for a witch to cloak them. Bonnie was just a young witch. There was no way she could overpower an entire coven, which meant she would also have to have at least the powerful magic of a coven helping her. And the Bennett coven were all dead. They knew well that Spirits on the Other Side held great power in the land of the living. Kai had been looking for the site of a witch massacre to Siphon the power from the place. He had yet to find it.
They couldn't search the town all on their own for some consecrated place where the Spirits had enough power to hide a coffin. So they called for backup. Several of the people working for them made their way to the small town, playing Wiccans, wanna-be witches, on the quest for America's witch history. The cover story was that they had come from New York, went to Salem, followed the trail of witches down to Mystic Falls and after Mystic Falls, they were heading to New Orleans. They planned to spend a week in town trying to " feel out " for places of power in the town. All the girls were on vervain and several other herbs known to ward off evil, so they couldn't be compelled. They knew of Sheila Bennett's status as a " witch " and searched out Bonnie to ask her if she would be following in her grandmother's footsteps. All the girls were human though, so even if Bonnie touched them, she would believe them to be just a few overzealous Wiccans on an adventure rather than anyone of concern.
The girls could only stay a week but they had narrowed the search area down significantly. They left the rest up to Enzo and Maggie. It took the couple one more day to find the Salem Witch House which they called Klaus to. But one of the coffins was missing, so they still weren't free from their deal with the Hybrid.
But they didn't have to find the last coffin as the last person in the coffin was the Original Witch. The supposedly dead, not-so-dead, mother of The Originals who literally walked to their house stinking of rotten flesh.
Caroline had been pondering whether or not she really wanted to go to the Mikaelson Ball when a portal opened in her room and Kai fell through. He was partially gray and his suit was ripped, coated in wet and dried blood. It was obvious he hadn't fed in days, if not weeks. She laid him on her bed and quickly fed him her stash of blood bags and blood capsules.
After a nice shower, she saw that his wounds had healed and a more lively color had returned to his skin. Kai drank another blood bag as he explained to her what had happened while he was away on business. He was in Japan and business had gone south when he and his business partners were ambushed by vampire Yakuza, his Japanese partners' rivals. They were killed in a hail of wooden bullets. When the Yakuza found out he wasn't dead, they took him to some unknown location where they locked him up and tortured him for several days, wanting to know why a stake to the heart couldn't kill him. The place was also warded against magic so he couldn't escape.
He didn't feel Caroline when she was bitten due to his weakened state. He apologized profusely to the young vampire because he wasn't able to help her. But to Caroline, there was nothing to forgive. She knew well when Kai was not answering her calls that something must've happened to him. She was wracked with worry over the past week, but she was just happy to see him again.
They spent the rest of the morning talking about how Caroline had spent her birthday. Kai hadn't sent a gift because he thought he'd be back from Japan in time for her birthday with her gift, but he wasn't able to get it. She cried on his shoulders as she told him of her father's death. Even after everything he did and all the awful things he said, it didn't change the fact that she loved her father.
She told him how her friendship with Elena and Bonnie had been repaired. Then she told him of the more recent developments.
"What? Esther Mikaelson is alive?"
"Yeah. She was locked in one of the coffins Klaus carts around and now she's throwing a ball. She wants to meet with Elena in private but the Salvatores don't want her going so I'm going with her."
That didn't sound right to Kai. "Didn't you just say she tried several times to kill Elena?"
"Yeah, but she says she wants to live in peace with her family. This used to be the village they lived in when they were human one thousand years ago. She says she wants to settle down here with her family again."
That didn't sound right. It sounded like she was a woman with an ulterior motive and was using both sides to get what she wanted. Esther Mikaelson wasn't known as a dark witch for nothing. She was powerful and would be more so in the place of her death. "Take me as your plus one."
Caroline raised a brow. "You want to go?"
A portal zipped open. "I'll pick you up right before 7."
When Kai and Caroline stepped through the doors, several eyes turned to the pair, including the eyes of a certain Hybrid. When Klaus swaggered over to them, Caroline quickly left Kai and made her way to the bar. "I need a drink."
Kai and Klaus stood face to face, studying one another without saying a word. "Since you broke your curse, you can't seem to keep your teeth to yourself."
"I wasn't the one who bit her," Klaus smirked. "It was Tyler."
"Yes. As soon as I find out where he's hiding his cowardly tail, I plan to remove his fangs." Kai shrugged his shoulders. "And maybe his heart. Although she wouldn't want me to do that. She loves him, the undeserving mutt that he is." His eyes were dark as he looked at Klaus. "I know I'm not strong enough to fight you, but I can incapacitate you. Caroline is my best friend, my sister. I've protected her from the Salvatores, vengeful werewolves, and even her own parents. Should she come to any harm at your hands, I will desiccate you." A cruel smile formed on his lips. "I'm certain your siblings wouldn't mind leaving you in a coffin for a century or so."
Klaus' face hardened. He tightly grasped Kai's arm as the Heretic moved to walk past him. Kai gritted his teeth as pain shot through him when the Hybrid shattered his radius and ulna. "You dare threaten me in my own home?"
"It's not a threat. It was a statement. I'm telling you that Caroline isn't defenseless. Just as Elena has the Salvatores behind her, Caroline has me. I'm telling you this because I don't like the doppelganger and her gang because of how they treat Caroline." Kai placed a hand on Klaus and began to siphon from him. "And I really wouldn't want to do them a favor by getting rid of you."
Klaus quickly let go of Kai's arm when he felt his strength leaving him. He let go of the Heretic and looked down to see his hand had turned gray, as though he had been desiccating.
Kai Parker. Everyone he asked said the man was a witch, but he was different from any witches Klaus had ever met. When he learned that he had been able to heal a werewolf bite, he became more curious about him. His research only brought back bare bones of information. He made a mental note to ask Kol what he knew of the Gemini Coven.
"Uh, if everyone could gather, please."
Kai flexed his arm, applying magic to the broken bones to force them to heal faster. He always liked a good party and he wasn't going to miss the dance due to a broken arm. He swiped a flute of champagne from the passing waiter's tray. He placed a blood capsule in his mouth and savored the coagulated blood cells dancing with the champagne on his tongue. He looked up to the Mikaelsons standing on the stairs. "Welcome, thank you for joining us. You know, whenever my mother brings our family together like this, it's tradition for us to commence the evening with a dance." His eyes immediately flew to the beacon of power at the top of the stairs. He could immediately tell something wasn't right with the witch. The power around her was of a different signature than her own. "Tonight's pick is a centuries-old waltz, so if all of you could please find yourselves a partner, please join us in the ballroom." As Esther retreated up the stairs, he saw Elena blocked by Damon at the base of the stairs. He blocked out the noise of everyone moving and tuned into the conversation. He stopped and almost gagged at the exchange. When he didn't hear anything useful, he simply picked a partner from the many ladies and joined the line of dancers.
When it came time to change partners, he came face to face with Rebekah Mikaelson. "Rebekah Mikaelson," he greeted. "My name is Kai Parker."
She smiled sardonically. "Charmed, I'm sure."
He chuckled at her dry remark as she seemed to be looking over his shoulder at Caroline dancing with Matt. "I'm sure Vera will be pleased to see you became friends with Caroline."
She finally met Kai's eyes. "You know Vera?"
"She's been a sister to me for the past two decades," Kai replied. "I come to and from Mystic Falls often. I met Caroline last year in May. I know how her kindness and charm can pull you into her orbit and before you realize it, you'll do anything for her."
Rebekah smiled genuinely for the first time that evening. Her eyes and face softened to that of a 17-year-old instead of the look of a cynical woman she usually sported. "I know. When I entered the high school, even though she was friends with the doppelganger, even though I snapped her neck, she didn't shun me. She welcomed me into the cheer squad and defended me to the doppelganger. She said, "You can't just decide she's evil just because she's Klaus' sister. Rebekah hasn't done anything to you. She hasn't even touched you. Just like what Damon did wasn't Stefan's fault, what Klaus does isn't her fault." It was the first time someone other than my brothers had defended me. I thought we could've been friends." Her voice hardened as she spoke through gritted teeth. "Then, Nik had to have his idiot hybrid bite her and ruined everything. With the way her friends treated her like she was a non-entity, she would've broken away from them eventually, but instead, he pushed her back into the doppelganger's arms." Both of them turned to look at Caroline. "She looks beautiful. I guess the dress and the bracelet were an apology."
Kai smiled and turned back to face the older vampire. "You look beautiful in that dress."
"Are you really giving me a compliment?"
"I am. I never say anything I don't mean," Kai said. "You are a beautiful woman, Rebekah Mikaelson."
Rebekah's eyes roamed his face from his smooth black hair to his well-fitted navy silk tux with black lapels and waistcoat. She hummed, "Well, you don't look so bad yourself." Kai just smirked at the reluctance of the blonde as she avoided his eyes, as though giving him the compliment was the hardest thing she had to do."
The dance ended and the guests were milling about the mansion. Kai and Rebekah had spoken for a while mostly about Caroline before they switched to more personal questions. It didn't take long for them to go their separate ways after Kai introduced himself to Kol.
"You seem to be enjoying your time with the Gemini witch instead of your date. You know, Bekah, settling for mortals is the first sign of weakness.
Rebekah rolled her eyes. "Are you talking about Matt or Kai?"
"Gemini witches are known to be powerful. I heard him threatening our brother over the blonde baby vampire. He's at least better than the human. I approve."
"I just met Kai. And I'm not settling for Matt. I brought him here to kill him. He's Elena's friend. If he dies she suffers. But I've already been scolded once so I was hoping you'd help your baby sister out." Rebekah looked at him with her doe eyes that always gave her whatever she wanted when she used them on her brothers.
"And spit right in the face of mother's rules?" Kol smirked at his sister. "I'm in."
Kai had kept his eyes and ears on Elena and the Salvatores all night. Just after Elena returned from her secret meeting with Esther, the witch came down and rang the crystal glass in her hands. When he picked up one of the glasses for the toast, his body immediately reacted and began siphoning. There was some type of magic in the champagne. He watched Esther's eyes and her false smile as she observed her children drinking the champagne. He almost stopped Rebekah from drinking the spelled champagne. Almost.
His curiosity got the better of him. He wanted to see what the Original Witch, the maker of the vampire species, was really capable of. He was curious to see what the spell would do.
Kai was looking around the mansion when he came upon Matt passing by the balcony. Invisique. He hid when he saw Kol flash behind the human quarterback.
"Good evening. You're Rebekah's friend. We haven't met."
He knew the youngest Mikaelson brother was going to bring trouble. He was conflicted. He didn't really care for the boy but Caroline did. On the other hand, he was rather bored and wanted to enjoy a little chaos. He wanted to see what the Wild Original would do.
"Matt Donovan." The two clasped hands
"Kol Mikaelson." With a smile on his face, Kol squeezed the quarterback's hand so tightly that anyone could hear the bones audibly breaking.
"Aah!" Matt cried out, falling to his knees.
Damon appeared behind Matt. "Hey, hey, hey, hey. Easy on the hand. Guy's a quarterback."
To Kol, it was as if Damon was moving in slow motion. He Original simply backhanded the 146-year-old vampire to the floor, a pleased smirk on his lips.
Damon's lips were bleeding but he was always reckless. Elena had rejected him and he had had quite a lot of bourbon. Maybe he had forgotten that Kol was an Original, just a few years younger than Klaus, but he charged at the Original once more. Kol grabbed Damon's hand, breaking the bones in the wrist as he raised the younger vampire by the neck. "Seriously, darling. I may be the youngest of my brothers but I'm still an Original. I'm a thousand years old. Do you really believe you stand a chance against me?"
"Damon!" Stefan hurried to his brother's side when he saw the commotion. He quickly charges at Kol and the three vampires fall off the balcony. The fight continued on the ground, Kol was easily playing with the two younger vampires with a maniacal smirk on his lips. When he threw Stefan into Damon, the brothers crashed through the door and into the main hall. They land over the various tables of food and drinks like ragdolls, in full view of the guests.
Kol brushes off his suit before charging at the brothers once more, prepared to kill both of them. Elijah and Finn, wishing to keep to Esther's rules, grabbed their youngest brother by the arms to restrain him. "What is wrong with you?" Elijah asked.
As Kol was being restrained by the two eldest, Damon picked up a broken piece of furniture and charged at Kol, stabbing him in the heart with a broken piece of the wooden table.
Elijah and Finn look down at their desiccated younger brother and look back to Damon. Elijah hands the desiccated Kol to two servants. "Take him to his room please." He fixes his gaze on the Salvatore brothers, with rage burning in his eyes. Even Finn, no matter how much he hated what his family had become, he did not like to see his siblings hurt, especially not by the likes of intruders who dared to harm his brother before his eyes, in his own home.
Klaus and Rebekah joined their elder brothers, slowly surrounding the Salvatores.
Damon and Stefan slowly back away. "You take the two supernatural killing machines on the right, I'll take the two on the left."
The air was still between the two groups for several moments. Damon was finally sober enough to realize the danger he and his brother were facing.
"Enough!" Everyone turned to the voice to see Esther and Elena walking down the stairs. Caroline quickly made her way from the ballroom to observe the commotion. "You are no longer welcomed here," she told Damon and Stefan. She looked at her children judgingly, as she is one to do then turned back to the brothers. "No harm will come to either of you should you leave, right, now. You have my word."
Damon looks at Elena before turning to Esther. "Spawner of the devils, you don't have to tell me twice."
As Damon walked away, Stefan stepped back as he apologized, "I'm sorry for my part and my brother's part in all this."

Rebekah, still in her gown, joined Matt, who had a bandage around the hand that Kol had crushed. "Hi, what are you doing?"
"Well let's see, I went to a dance and got my hand crushed. I found out that I don't have health insurance, so I just needed a minute to myself."
"Well, I thought, maybe I'd buy you an apology drink."
"Maybe you could just leave me alone."
Rebekah was hurt but she would acknowledge that maybe she deserved that. She was the one who incited Kol in the first place. "Look, I'm-I'm really sorry about Kol. He's a lunatic."
"Look, Rebekah, you're really fun and pretty and all, but I really need you to leave me alone." Matt left her alone at the bar.
Just then, Damon walked in carrying a nearly-empty bottle of alcohol.
"Burn. Rejected by the captain of the football team. Welcome to adolescence." He took a swig from the bottle.
"Oh, don't be so glum just because Elena rejected you, Damon." Damon's eye twitched as he turned to face Kai, who was standing behind him, looking through his phone. "How many times does this make now? Though I must say, if it makes you act like a little bitch every time, maybe I should ask her to do it more often." Kai turned to show his cell phone screen, which showed Kol tossing Damon around on the balcony. "It makes for great entertainment. Tell me when's the next show?"
Damon growled before launching himself toward Kai, but like always, he was thrown back by Kai's magic through the glass window of the Mystic Grill and collapsed onto the pavement. He quickly gathered himself and vanished into the night.
Kai turned to face Rebekah who had a smirk on her lips. "Knew I should have killed him. Mother wouldn't let me."
"I suppose we both have our hands tied," Kai said. "I guess your date with Matt didn't end well."
The blonde shrugged. "I'd probably crush him anyway."
"Well, maybe you need to find someone more durable," Kai said suggestively, his eyes never leaving hers as he made his intentions clear.
"And who would that be?" Rebekah spoke in a coquettish tone of voice.
In a flash, the two were entering Kai's apartment, kissing heatedly as they ripped each other's clothes off. He pulled back, his vampire face coming forth, eliciting the same reaction from Rebekah, her eyes turning red with veins in her hunger for him. Kai placed a short kiss on her lips once more and began trailing kisses down her neck.
When she went to the ball, she didn't plan on getting the big bag hybrid to admit that he fancied her. Whatever that means. Did he have feelings for her? If so, then why? Why did he have Tyler bite her not two weeks ago? Collateral damage is what he called her. How could he hurt her so if he really had feelings for her. She had begun to think that there was something more under the cruelty he showed everyone else because he had been gentle with her before, but she was wrong.
A gentle man would never allow an innocent to become a victim of a war. And that's what she was. A victim in neutral ground caught between Klaus and the Salvatores. She had friends on both sides, Elena and Bonnie on one and Kai, Vera, Enzo, and Maggie on the other. It was just a coincidence that her two groups of friends were on opposing sides, but Kai and the others weren't forcing her to choose. Klaus was Vera's friend and Vera had helped Enzo, Maggie, and adopted Kai. They were loyal to Vera so of course, they would help Vera's friend.
She chose Elena because she had known Elena and Bonnie since childhood. They had been best friends for so long that their spats were quickly forgotten. Elena needed her because she couldn't protect herself. So as her best friend, Caroline took it upon herself to help protect Elena. Even if she didn't like the Salvatores, even if her skin crawled every time she heard Damon's voice call her Barbie bringing back the memories of all the times he raped her and called her that with condescension, she would put up with it. For Elena's sake. It was all for Elena. And it would all be worth it. Right?
It's why she was sitting with Klaus, distracting him as her so her friends could incapacitate his brother. He was a good conversationalist and he listened to her. She almost forgot what she was really doing. Almost.
Klaus let out a sudden gasp and placed his hand on his chest.
"What is it?"
He turned to look at her. "What did you do?"
"Nothing." She didn't know the whole plan. She didn't know what her friends had done. All she was told was that she needed to distract Klaus because Elijah had Elena. She had no idea what her friends had done.
Her heart beat fast with fear when she saw a flurry of emotions in his eyes. There was betrayal, hurt, which settled into cold indifference. He shook her as he gripped her arms tightly. "What did you do?!"
Fear coursed through her. She hated it when his feelings changed so suddenly. It gave her whiplash. She never knew what he would do next when his temperament changed all of a sudden. "I didn't do anything. Stop it."
"Kol!" With those words, Klaus disappeared. Caroline fell back onto the bench and wiped her tears before they could fall. She quickly pulled out her phone and called the one person she could always rely on. "What trouble did you get yourself into this time?"
"Something's happening. Damon called and said Elijah took Elena. He asked for my help to distract Klaus, but something happened."
"Caroline, I need you to tell me exactly what happened?"
When Caroline explained Klaus' reaction, Kai realized what Esther had done to all her children the night before. "A linking spell. She's linked all her children together so what happens to one of them happens to all of them. Most likely your friends daggered Kol and Klaus felt the pain in his heart even if the dagger had no effect on him. This is bad."
"Why?"
"It means Esther's planning on killing them." Kai suddenly appeared in front of her with a large clear crystal in his hand.
Kai walked behind the grill, followed closely by Caroline.
They heard Elijah say, "Tell me where the witches are or I'll have my sister kill Elena right now."
"You can't!" Kai held Caroline back when all their eyes turned to her.
"You told me I had until nine," Damon complained.
"I'm sure Rebekah will be more than happy to begin her work early."
"That won't be necessary," Kai said. "I know where they are and I can stop them."
Elijah turned to Kai. "And how will you do that?"
"Esther is channeling the Bennett bloodline at the old Salem Witch House where a hundred witches were burned to death. I'm a siphoner witch. I can take the witches' power from the land."
"And you want us to trust you?" Klaus stepped forward.
Kai looked straight into the Hybrid's eyes. "Vera wouldn't want you to die. If you trust her then trust me."
The brothers shared a look that communicated their thoughts as only those who had known each other for several lifetimes could. Elijah voiced their agreement. "Very well."
Kai opened a portal and ushered them through. "Come." While the Mikaelson brothers confronted their mother, Kai remained behind the house. He held the large crystal in one hand and placed the other hand on the wall of the house. A rush of power filled him. Bennett witches were powerful on their own but gathered together in spirit, they were formidable. But it was nothing he couldn't handle. They were nothing compared to the vastness of Vera's power.
Kai channeled the power into his body, then into his talisman, and stored the rest in the large crystal in his hands. When he finished, nothing remained for the witches to power Esther up.
When Esther felt the power of the witches leave her, she called out "No! Sisters, do not abandon me."
Esther disappeared with Finn.
Kai accompanied the brothers back to their home. Rebekah already arrived home and stood up when Kai entered with her brothers. "What happened?"
"Mother and Finn have disappeared and we're still linked. Anything that happens to one of us will happen to the other. Kai siphoned their power to stop mother from killing us."
"Thank you for your help, Mr. Parker."
"Please call me Kai. I hate being associated with my family."
"Well, get to it," Klaus said. "Break mother's linking spell."
"I'll need to see the original spell to find out the ingredients she used before I can undo the spell."
"You can just do as you did before, siphon the magic of mother's spell from our blood."
"Yeah, no, not unless you have a death wish."
"You dare threaten me?"
Kol stood in front of his brother to stop him. "Nik, that's enough. It was no threat. Mother's linking spell linked our blood. He can't siphon it without killing us."
"What do you mean?" Rebekah asked.
"We're dead. It's only magic that keeps us alive. We drank mother's spell and it became part of our blood. If he tried to siphon the spell, he would also siphon the magic that turned us into vampires," Kol explained.
"Siphoning the magic keeping you alive would return you to your true death state. Any and every magical creature with magic in its blood will die if the magic is removed. Witches, Werewolves, and vampires are all creatures of magic. Removing that magic will kill them. Kill you."
After searching Esther's room, they found the spell. Kai explained that he would need their blood. Elijah and Kol left to give the Mystic Falls gang less opportunity to kill them. Klaus went on the search for Finn while Rebekah remained in the mansion as she spent her days trying to find the White Oak tree.
Kai had made himself at home in the Mikaelson's library, devouring the grimoires they had collected over the centuries. He especially loved having access to Esther's grimoire. So many spells. Both dark and light were available to him. Many of the spells were of Esther's own making. He could see how she became such a powerful witch.
Most nights, he ended up in Rebekah's bed, not minding her having to sleep with Damon in order to get the information she needed. They weren't exclusive so who was he to judge.
One day, Rebekah entered with an unconscious Damon Salvatore thrown over her shoulder. Her display of strength was hot but her viciousness as she tortured the younger vampire was hotter. Shieldmaiden. No, perhaps she was more of a Valkyrie. Beautiful women who decided those who would be victorious and those who would be defeated. Deciding who lived and who died.
As she tortured the vampire physically, he joined into torture Damon mentally, subliminally compelling the vampire to live and relive his worse nightmares. The two Originals bonded over torturing Damon, both disliking him for his treatment of women.
When Klaus came home with Finn, Kai quickly performed the spell to unlink the siblings. And just in time too, because not long after, they learned of Finn's death from Stefan's mouth.
Although she failed once, Esther still hadn't stopped trying to kill her children. She turned Alaric into an Enhanced Original Vampire to hunt her children.
Kai felt the tug on the bond he had with Caroline and knew she was in trouble. He tracked her to the school, but he couldn't face an overpowered Alaric by himself. He needed help. He tracked Klaus outside the Gilbert house, where he was preparing to cause chaos when he couldn't enter the home.
"Wait," Kai approached him. "Alaric has Caroline."
Klaus' heart stopped but he showed no emotion on his face. "And I care about this, why?"
"Oh, please. We both know you have feelings for her. You can deny it if you want but that's not what's important. What's important is that I can kill him. I just need your help to get Caroline out. Then I'll siphon away all the magic your mother used to turn him."
Klaus smiled. "Very well."
When they arrived at the school, they could hear the commotion in the classroom and hurried up the stairs. Klaus caught the sweet and familiar scent of Caroline and followed it. He placed his hand on her mouth to silence her.
"Shh, shh, shh, shh." Caroline's eyes widened at the sight of Klaus. Her body immediately relaxed as she felt safe in his arms. He came for her. Even with the threat of the white oak stake, he came for her.
"It's okay. It's okay. It's me. It's okay, you're safe. Kai came to me. We'll save Elena and take care of Alaric. You go straight home, Stay inside. Do you understand?" He turned her around to face him, his eyes desperate, for what she didn't know. "Do you understand me?"
She nodded her head. "Thank you." Klaus vanished in a flash toward the classroom.
Klaus flashed in front of Alaric, using his momentum to toss the hunter into the wall. Alaric quickly recovered, appearing behind Klaus ready to stab him with the white oak stake, but Klaus blocked him, breaking Alaric's arm to get him to let go of the stake. The indestructible piece of wood fell to the ground.
Klaus lunged for the stake but Alaric grabbed him by his jacket and tossed the Hybrid into the lockers. Kai flashed behind Alaric and placed both hands on the hunter's temple, painfully siphoning the magic Esther used to make the Hunter. "No wonder you're so strong. She pumped you full of a thousand years' worth of magic."
Alaric headbutted Kai from behind, causing the Heretic to release him before tossing him across the hall. Alaric tried to pick up the stake, only to be met with a kick that sent him away from the two male vampires.
"Caroline!" Kai said as he stood up.
"I thought I told you to go home," Klaus growled. Caroline handed the white oak stake to Klaus.
The three faced Alaric, Klaus and Kai standing in front of Caroline to protect her and Caroline standing ahead of Elena.
Alaric stood up. His eyes flew from one to the other to the next as he came up with a plan to face all three of the vampires. His greatest asset was his speed, so he quickly appeared behind Caroline and broke her spine. Then he separated the two vampires, pushing them into the opposite ends of the hall.
He grabbed the white oak stake and raised it above Klaus' chest. Klaus raised his hands to block the attack, but Alaric was made stronger than him through magic and was slowly pushing the weapon down on him.
"Stop! Let him go or I'll kill myself." Elena held a small knife to her throat.
Alaric looked at Elena as he continued to pressure Klaus. "Put it down Elena."
"Why? Because you still need me alive? There's a reason why Esther used me to make you, isn't there? She didn't want you to be immortal, so she tied your life to a human one. Mine. That way you have only one life span to kill all vampires and then you'll be gone. So, when I die, you die too. That's it, it has to be!" She was desperate. If Alaric killed Klaus, he'd be killing Stefan and Damon and Tyler.
"You're wrong."
"Am I?" Elena dug the knife into her skin, drawing blood.
"Stop! STOP! STOP! STOP!" Alaric called out.
"Well, that's good to know," Kai said behind Elena. Biting his wrist, he held her against his chest and forced his wrist to her mouth, forcing her to swallow his blood.
"No! Kai, don't!" Caroline cried. With a tug and a twist, Elena fell to the floor dead.
Alaric's body seized and turned gray, the white oak stake falling from his hands. Klaus kicked Alaric's dead body off and held onto the stake tightly. The three vampires were silent as they stood in the middle of the school hallway with the teacher and student dead at their feet.

Notes: I know there wasn't a lot of Klaroline but there'll be more of them in the next chapter, I promise.
Klaus wanting to prove he didn't have feelings for Caroline only pushed Caroline closer to her friends. At first, I wanted Enzo and Maggie to find the coffins within a few days, but that would mean Esther's coffin would remain locked. And even if they could open it earlier, she would have to interact with her children for longer as she waited for the full moon to try to kill the Originals, giving them more chances to figure out Esther's scheme. So I kept to the timeline.
Elena was turned by Kai instead of Damon's blood so there'll be no sire bond, but Elena will still act on her intense feelings for Damon. Alaric still revealed the vampires to the council.
I didn't focus so much on Caroline and Klaus at the ball because everything happened the same way.
Abby didn't become a vampire. Finn and Sage still died. Everything that I didn't write happened exactly as it did in canon.
