Kara tip toes up through the penthouse apartment she shares with her fiancée. It's the middle of the night and she knows that Lena is already is bed, she sent her their general good night text hours ago after Kara said she was caught up with her Supergirl duties.

She shushes the ball of golden fur in her arms as he begins to make a whining sound at being held and stopped from running around to sniff his new environment.

With a gentle pressure, she keeps him in place, tight against her chest. She is very aware of the amount of force she is using to hold him, a little afraid that she is going to accidentally hurt him.

She freezes when she hears Lena let out a soft sigh from the next room as she rolls over an hugs Kara's pillow to her chest.

Kara can tell from Lena's breathing and heartbeat that she is close to waking up, so she needs to hurry and get the little fluffball into the room Lena turned into an art studio for her. She already came back earlier and tidied away all of her art supplies and filled it with anything she could get her hands on that a little puppy would love.

She hushes him again as she closes the door behind them and sets him down, watching closely as he examines his surroundings before diving onto his fluffy doggy bed and nuzzling into the blanket she set out for him.

With one last glance behind her she set off for the bedroom, ready to join Lena for some snuggle time.

Her pyjamas are already on the dresser waiting for her, courtesy of her ever-loving partner. Lena never fails to make her smile with her small acts of love and kindness. It makes her feel a little bit guilty that she is hiding the dog from her.

It's not going to be forever, she knows that. She just needs to warm her up to the idea of having a dog around before she announces his arrival, that's all. Kara is fairly certain that Lena won't appreciate her just simply bringing a dog she found in an alley way whilst patrolling into their home without discussing it with her first.

She carefully lifts the covers and gets in beside Lena, pressing herself against her back and wrapping her arms around her middle.

Lena stirs, peeking over her shoulder at her and snuggling down into her embrace. "Hi, darling."

"Hey, baby."

That is as much conversation as they manage to exchange before they are fast asleep, safe in each other's arms.

Kara wakes up to a cold butt. The duvet has been pulled from her side onto Lena's in the night. It doesn't happen often but when it does, she needs a dose of Lena's super strong coffee to break her out of her grumpy mood.

She kicks off what is left of the duvet from her body and throws her legs over the edge of the bed. The movement causes a high pitched whine to fill the room.

Her head whips around to locate the sound. She is then greeted by the sight of her new fur baby up on their bed, snuggled in Lena's arms. The cheeky little thing was also curled up on top of what should have been her share of the duvet.

She panics for a second, she doesn't know if Lena is aware of the little space invader, but she sure hopes not. This would be one of the worst ways for her to find out.

Kara slips around to the opposite side of the bed and very carefully extracts the dog from her fiancée's soft grip. The puppy immediately snuggles into her as she lifts him up and makes a sharp exit.

She practically runs down the hall to put him back into the studio. As she expected, the door is wide open and so the dog must have made his great escape. "You're a needy little thing." She whispers to him as she clips him into his pre-bought harness, changes into her super suit and sets out of the balcony with him tucked under her arm.

She does a quick change out of her suit into her normal clothes and gives him a walk around park, letting him run off a little energy and do his business away from the penthouse. Kara vigilantly keeps one ear open for any sounds of Lena waking up.

She smiles as the pup comes trotting up to her with a stick three times the length of his own body firmly in his mouth, waddling slightly because of the weight of it. "Good boy, you're a clever boy, aren't you?"

Kara really wants to give him a name but really wants it to be an activity that she does with Lena, she is already going to be forcing a pet on her that she doesn't know if she will like, but she would really like it if they could do it together.

When the pup is all tuckered out she picks him back up and takes off again, suit back in place. She really dislikes how many wardrobe changes she has to do in a day.

She thinks she is in the clear as she steps back in through the balcony and unclips the harness once the door is shut behind her, fist pumping at her good luck. The curious pup quickly sets about sniffing around the kitchen, smelling food from a mile away.

Kara kicks herself when she realises that Lena is awake and cooking, so much for good luck. She makes chase in hopes that she can get to him before Lena sees him but doesn't make it in time.

He scampers behind Lena's feet, leaving Kara clenching her fists as Lena turns to face her, unaware of the little ball of fur sniffing around behind her.

"Good morning, darling. I just made coffee." Lena smiles at her warmly, her cheeks displaying her cute little dimples that Kara loves so much.

"Morning! Sorry I wasn't here when you woke up." Kara smiles just a little too wide and worries for a second that Lena is going to see right through her. She does notice that something is off but must just put it down to Supergirl duties because she doesn't say anything.

Kara bites the inside of her cheek to stop herself from reacting when the dog gets a little too close to Lena and looks like he is about to jump up her leg. Thinking on her feet, Kara fakes a loud sneeze, startling the little guy into backing away.

"Bless you." Lena looks at her worriedly. "Are you coming down with something? Are you solar-flaring again? I told you, you're working too hard."

Kara takes Lena's hands in her own. "I'm perfectly fine, that's the first time I've sneezed in a while, but if it puts your mind at ease, I will try to take it easy where I can."

Lena scrunches up her face in thought. "Ok, but I want you to take a couple of days off from the DEO, they ran perfectly fine before you were there so they can survive without Supergirl for a couple of days now."

"Alright, alright. I'll call Alex after breakfast." That earns a gleeful smile from her love.

Lena fills up a mug with coffee and adds a little sugar and creamer before handing it over to Kara, who is still tracking every movement the little dog is making behind Lena. At one point, he even runs between Lena's legs, nearly giving her a heart attack, before scurrying off into another room, probably to cause more chaos.

Lena hands her the mug with a kiss on her cheek, pushing a lock of her hair back behind her ear as she does so. "I'll talk to Jess and see if she can sort me out with some time off too, we can have some time to…bond."

Kara smirks at her, eyes gleaming. "I guess I better get onto that phone call then."

She is rewarded with a sultry look and a kiss, Lena playfully biting her lip as she pulls away. "Yes, you had."

Kara gives her a beaming smile and pecks her on her lips again before taking a sip of her coffee. "This is a great cup of coffee, babe."

Lena drops the suggestive look completely in favour of smiling back at her. "I thought so too, the best I've done in a while, at least."

Lena tells her all about her plans for the day, she is going to be working in her home office for a while before binging a few episodes of the shows she has fallen behind on and how she hopes that Kara will find the time to join her if she can.

When Kara remembers that she hasn't heard the pup making any noise for a while, she decides it's time to go and check on him. She finds him back in the bedroom, he has burrowed under the duvet in what was once a freshly made bed and was curled up fast asleep. She lets out an exacerbated sigh and simply takes a picture of the pup. As annoyed as she is, he is really cute and it's not really his fault.

Since Lena will be home all day she shoots Nia a message, begging her to look after her unnamed puppy until she can talk to Lena. She's going to have to come clean soon, she just needs to gauge her reaction first. If she is dead set against dogs then this is going to be really awkward.

Nia happily agrees to looking after him for the day, already talking about all of the treats and toys she will buy him. Kara promises to bring him over right away. She tucks him under cape. The napping puppy not stirring at all as his little pink tongue lolls out of the side of his mouth cutely.

There is an obvious lump under her cape, but she doesn't have any other options for where to put him, so she is going to have to risk it.

She paces passed Lena, who is still seated at the kitchen island, coffee in one hand as she checks her emails with the other. "I've got to run. I won't be long though, I'm just helping Nia with a CatCo thing and then I'll be right back, I promise." She drops a kiss to the top of her head as she continues on her way.

Kara was hoping that Lena would let her go without too much of a fuss, but she is in a good mood today which equals talkative Lena. Normally, she loves talkative Lena, but she can't afford to be trapped in a conversation with a wiggling lump under her cape.

"Will you be back by this afternoon?" Lena stares at her for a second, sensing that something is off before she snaps out of it, clearly not caring enough to ask so she glances back down at her emails as she awaits Kara's reply.

Kara nods quickly, backing away as she talks. "I should be, I'm looking forward to spending some time with you."

"Me too, darling. I'll see you soon. Oh, and don't forget to call Alex." Lena peeks up at her as she feels the kiss on her head. She gazes at her for a few moments and Kara would have bet her life that she was busted but Lena just shrugs it off again and goes back to her emails, calling over her shoulder as she hears to front door open. "I love you."

"I love you too." She calls back, letting out a relieved breath as she closes the door behind her.

She walks the little ball of energy to Nia's place, enjoying the sunshine as it beams down on them. He happily trots next to her, sniffing the air whenever they pass a food place. Kara laughs at him every time he does, knowing that he takes after her.

She gives Alex a quick call, making arrangements for her days off. Alex happily agrees, ecstatic that her sister is finally going to have a break. They make plans to meet up when she is off and bid each other goodbye, unable to speak for long because Alex is at work.

Kara begins to make a plan in her head for what she is going to say to Lena when she gets home. She needs to figure out exactly where Lena stands on having pets. She really doesn't want to have to rehome her little buddy but the more she thinks about it, the more she understands that it is Lena's home too and she doesn't want her to be uncomfortable in her own home.

All of that being said, she will also try and convince her that having a dog will make their lives better. Lena has always loved a good debate and she has plenty of arguments up her sleeve that can come in handy.

It doesn't take them long to get to Nia's place. She finds Kara's predicament extremely funny, which annoys her a little bit.

"Can you not laugh at my pain, please?"

Nia just keeps cackling. "You're the only person I know that would rescue a puppy and not tell their partner about it immediately."

"I want to talk to her about it before I drop the bomb on her and I didn't know where else to take him in the meantime." Nia smiles at her, her laughter finally subsiding.

"You're too compassionate for your own good, it means you end up in bizarre situations like this one."

Kara nods, absentmindedly stroking the pup. "So I've been told." She sighs and stand up, transferring the sleepy dog over to Nia for a fuss. "Look after him for me, I have to go convince Lena to let me keep him."

"Good luck." Nia jeers from behind her, sounding way too amused with her conundrum.

She flies back to the apartment instead of walking, too impatient to get on with her conversation with Lena.

Her boots hit the balcony with a soft thud, alerting Lena to her presence.

"Hey, that was quick."

Kara softens at the sight of her love snuggled under a blanket on the couch. She is flicking through channels on the TV, trying to find something half decent to settle on.

"Yeah, it didn't take too long. Have you finished all of your work already?" Kara plops down next to her, turning her body so they are facing each other.

"I finished a little while ago, I didn't have as much to do as I thought I would."

Kara nods and decides to jump right in. "Can I ask you about your opinion on something?"

Lena furrows her brows at the question. "Of course you can, I always want you to feel like you can talk to me about anything."

"How do you feel about pets?"

Lena squints a little, thinking. "I guess that I have never really put that much thought into it. I suppose they're great for some people."

"But not for you?" Kara reads between the lines.

"I can't say as though it is something that I have ever considered before."

"And if you were to consider it?"

Lena finally clues in to what she wants. "Are you asking me if you can have a pet?"

Kara meets her eyes, looking a little abashed. "I mean…I was thinking of us getting a pet, not just me. Like, together."

Lena hums, thinking. "What kind of pet?"

"Maybe, a dog?"

Lena finally recognises the look on her face. "You look guilty."

"Why would I be guilty?"

Lena stands suddenly. "Oh my god, Kara." She runs a hand across her face. Kara doesn't dare to move for a second, unsure of what this reaction means. "You already have a dog in mind don't you?"

"…maybe."

"Alright, let me meet it first and we'll go from there."

Kara literally jumps with joy and hugs Lena tightly, spinning her around. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"

Lena can't help but smile at how cute her fiancée is, this is a very Kara reaction to a very Kara situation.

With a sloppy kiss to her cheek, Kara rushes off to get the puppy, she doesn't even explain to Lena what she is doing. "I'll be back!"

Lena shakes her head at her as she flies off, completely aware that her fondness for Kara often clouds her judgement and yet somehow, she always lands on her feet, happier than ever.

Kara flies as quickly as she can, excited for Lena to fall in love with the little ball of fur the same way she did when she saw him left in a cardboard box in an alley across town when she was patrolling.

She takes him from Nia with a grin, not staying long enough to answer any questions. She laughs as Nia complains about not getting any details of their conversation and flies off, her little bundle safely under her arm.

The little guy lolls his tongue out and closes his eyes, enjoying the breeze as they fly. It reminds Kara of when dogs stick their heads out of a car window. She can already picture herself flying with him and getting him little goggles and a little jacket.

She floats back into the apartment and heads right into the bedroom to get into comfortable clothes, bringing the little guy with her. She wants to be able to introduce them with zero distractions, so she is planning on getting settled before bringing him out to meet Lena.

It only takes her a matter of seconds to be changed and go to open the door. "Not again." She mumbles to herself.

The door is swinging wide open, the dog really is a little Houdini. She hurries out into the living area, finding Lena still on the couch, reading something on her phone.

The dog is sat right next to her, wagging his tail. Lena doesn't seem to be even looking at him and Kara's heart sinks. Does Lena really not like the little guy at all? She was hoping that it would be love at first sight…or at least puppy love.

She pouts, unsure of where to go from here.

Lena notices her standing there from the corner of her eye and is immediately on edge, completely at a loss for why she is looking so stricken.

"Darling, are you ok?"

In lieu of an answer Kara's lips just wobble slightly as she tries to hold back her emotions. She breathes deeply, steadying herself so she can answer.

"It's ok, I'm ok. I was just hoping that you would like him, is all. You don't have to pretend for me, Lena. This is obviously your home too and if you don't want to keep him then I won't make you."

Now Lena is even more confused. She doesn't have even a hint of a clue of what is happening.

Kara comes right over to her and opens her arms. Lena stands and is about to open her arms too, ready for a very confusing hug but is flabbergasted when she leans down and picks up a dog out of seemingly nowhere.

"Wait, what?"

Her exclamation draws Kara's attention away from the little golden retriever puppy.

"You don't have to like him, I don't want to push you into something you don't want." Lena can see the sadness in her eyes and the puppy seems to be mirroring her expression exactly.

"What? Where did you just pick that puppy up from? It came out of nowhere."

It's pretty safe to say that everyone in the situation is confused, including the puppy, who is now squirming to be put back down. Kara does so, letting him run free.

He runs right up to Lena and jumps into her lap, desperately pushing himself into her for scritches. Lena does so, enjoying the attention from him and finding him to be adorable.

"Hi, who are you then? I'm Lena." She scratches behind his ears, smiling at the dopey look that crosses his face. "You're a good dog, yes you are."

Kara stands a few feet away, brain still scrambling to catch up. Was Lena really just oblivious to the dog sitting right beside her on the couch?

Lena looks into the puppy's big brown eyes and can't deny how utterly lovable he is. "Where did you even find this cute little munchkin?"

Kara tentatively comes to sit beside them. "He was left in a carboard box in an alley. I saw him yesterday when I was patrolling." She says the words carefully, trying to be matter of fact.

Lena looks back into those puppy dog eyes. "Oh no! How could those nasty people do that to you? We'll take care of you, yes we will!"

Kara looks at her with wide eyes. "We can keep him?"

Lena grins at her. "How could I say no? Just look at how cute this face is."

Kara claps her hands excitedly, bringing the pair into a cuddle. "Thank you! Now I can move his bed out of the studio!"

"You can what?"

"Oh no."

"How long have you had the dog here, Kara?"

Kara reluctantly explains her attempts at hiding him since last night, but Lena simply laughs. "You're not good at hiding things, darling. I guess I can be oblivious when I want to be. I can't believe I had a dog sitting next to me and I didn't even notice."

"Speaking of the dog, I haven't named him yet."

Lena glances over to the dog again, smiling at the little guy. "How about Krypto?"

"Krypto." Kara tries the name out and breaks into a dazzling grin. "It's perfect."

"Great. Krypto Luthor, welcome to the family."

Kara shoves her, lightly. "Luthor? He's a Luthor-Danvers."

"Only until we get married, then it will be just Luthor."

"What makes you think the Danvers will be dropped?" Kara raises her eyebrow at her challengingly.

Lena smirks at her. "I know because you love me almost as much as I love you, so it won't take much convincing for you to give in, especially with my…talents."

"Just for the record, we love each other an equal amount and I don't seem to recall what these 'talents' of yours are. Care to remind me?"

Lena goes to kiss her but pauses. "Not in front of the baby."
