Chapter 4: A change of heart
After running a few blocks, Jet makes it back to his subway hideout. He removes his hood and sits down on one of the seats in the train. He had a disbelief expression on his face as he recalls the events that happened today. All he could think about was the beautiful kind fox that thanked him for saving her.
"You're such a good boy."
Those words echoed in his head. No one has ever said he was a good boy not even his neglectful mother. Like no joke, Jet has never ever heard anyone say something nice about him. Was he really a good boy?
Jet looks at the pile of stolen wallets and food on the floor, then he looks at a reflection of himself in piece of broken mirror sitting on the seats across from him. He looks at himself for 5 seconds, that's when it hit him. Jet realized what he had become, a thief at a very young age.
Slowly tears start to leak out of his eyes and Jet breaks down crying as a huge wave of guilt and despair washes over him like a wave.
"*sniff* Oh no. *sniff, sob* What am I doing! *cries*"
This is not what he wanted. Jet cried harder making the empty subway echo while using his blanket to soak up his tears. Jet didn't want this kind of life at all, he just wanted a normal happy childhood life with a sweet and beautiful loving mother. But no, unfortunatley he didn't get one, now here he was fending for himself. Even though Jet was homeless and had to steal things in order to support himself, he still felt very bad and guilty and wished he didn't have to steal things anymore. He didn't want to live and grow up as a thief.
Jet stopped crying when an idea suddenly hit him. That's it! He doesn't have to be a thief! He was still a kid and it wasn't too late for him to make a change for himself. Jet can be a good boy as much as he wanted too and make his own good decisions. Jet wipes away his tears as he smiles at his idea. The first thing Jet wanted to do was gather all the stolen wallets he had and have them returned to their rightful owners. But how?
Jet thinks for a few minutes on how he could give back all the wallets. It would be super hard to find every single person he pickpocketed.
"Hmmmm" Jet thinks hard with his hand on his snout
Finally after a minute of thinking, Jet thought of a way to return the wallets. If he handed them over to the police, they would easily track down each owner and have each wallet returned in one day. But if Jet handed over the wallets in person, the police would right away think that he stole them (which he technically did) and apprehend him. That's the last thing Jet wanted was to be caught by the police and be put in a foster system or an orphanage. He decided he was gonna have to hand over the wallets stealthly without being seen.
After putting his plan together, Jet grabs a nearby empty cardboard box and starts gathering up all the wallets. The shoplifted food on the other hand, well Jet decided to keep them because they were just food and not valuable items and Jet had to keep his stomach full somehow.
One by one, Jet checks each wallet making sure the IDs, credit cards, cash, and other contents were still in them before throwing them all in the box. Thankfully Jet didn't have too many wallets so it took a few minutes.
After packing all the wallets, Jet closes the box and goes to sleep for the night.
The next day
Jet wakes up, picks up the box and carries it out of the subway station to look for the nearest police station.
Outside it was bright and sunny but not too busy as it was a Saturday and most people were at home relaxing. Jet walked around the streets carrying the box trying to locate a nearest police station but couldn't see one. But suddenly out of luck, Jet sees a crown victoria police car idling at a stop light. If he could hitch a ride, the police car would take him back to the police station.
Jet stealthly runs out in the street and sneaks up behind the police car. After making sure the officer in the driver seat wasn't looking, Jet carefully and quietly opens the back trunk and throws the box in before climbing in. Jet closes the trunk a crack so he could see outside. After a few seconds, the stop light turns green and the police car starts driving. Jet rode in the trunk of the police car for 10 minutes until he felt it pull into a parking lot. Jet looks outside and to his satisfaction, he sees the police station.
Jet remains in the trunk until the police car parks. The officer shuts off the engine and steps out of the car. The officer then locks the car and walks towards the station while whistling a tune. Jet waits for the officer to enter the station before climbing out of the trunk with the box.
Jet pulls his hood over his head as cover and proceeds to go up to the front door of the station. Thankfully there was no one around to see him. Jet leaves the box in front of the door and quickly runs to hide behind another parked police car. Jet peeks around the car waiting for someone to come out of the station and notice the box.
After waiting 10 minutes, a female police officer finally comes out and sees the box.
"Huh what's this?" She said
Jet smiles to himself when he sees the officer open the box.
"Huh? Wallets? What are these doing here?" The officer said as she holds up one wallet to closely inspect it.
Jet continues to watch until the officer picks up the whole box and carries it inside the station.
"We better find out who these wallets belong to." The officer said to herself as the doors closed behind her
Seeing that his mission is accomplished, Jet runs out of the police station parking lot and onto the street. Jet felt proud of himself now that the wallets were in good hands and will be returned to their owners.
Jet decided before going back to his subway, he decided to take a peaceful walk around the city to reward himself.
1 hour later
Jet was now walking through one of the biggest green recreation parks in Los Angeles and it was full of people enjoying it. Jet was enjoying the fresh air until suddenly he sees a young woman stand up and walk away from a park bench. What Jet also sees is her purse left behind on the bench. Normally Jet would take the purse for himself for the money inside of it. But he made a change for himself and vowed to never steal again. So Jet makes a right decision and grabs the purse before running up to the woman.
"Hey Miss!" Jet called
"Huh?" The woman turned around upon hearing Jet
"You um...you left this behind." Jet said as he held up her purse
"*gasp* Oh my I can't believe I forgot that." The woman smiled as she takes her purse back
"Thank you so much dear." The woman gave Jet a few pats on his head before walking away
Immediately Jet smiled from the pats he recieved. Jet was really enjoying his new self. He loved being a good boy. He felt like a whole new wolf pup.
Jet continued to walk through park until...
*giggle!*
A child's laughter suddenly makes Jet look to his right. What he sees immediately makes his smile vanish.
Jet saw an anthro arctic wolf mom happily playing with her pup on a picnic blanket on the grass. The wolf mom was smiling brightly as she was giving her pup belly tickles.
Jet looks down on the ground with a very sad expression. Sure he was a good pup now but that still doesn't change the fact that he was still homeless without a mother. Jet decided it was time to go back to his subway.
Jet walked all the way back to his subway sulking to himself the whole way.
