Chapter V
Kick-Ups
╚═══*.·:·. ✧ ۞ ✧ .·:·.*═══╝
Karin followed the blonde captain, keeping up but staying a little behind, after all, she had never been to Soul Society before. Her eyes drifted around, as she grew more curious to explore the place. But Shinji seemed to be objective in his path. Hinamori Momo walked next to Karin while wearing a polite smile.
"So, Kurosaki-chan I hope you will enjoy your time here. We are inside Seireitei, the court of pure souls. Basically where all shinigami and the Noble Houses live. Shinigami live in the Division barracks, while high-ranking officers commute from their own homes." He explained.
"And on the other side is Rukongai right?" Karin asked curiously remembering Toshiro's introduction when they arrived.
"That's right. Basically where everyone goes to when they die. Souls from Rukongai can only enter Seireitei when they are accepted into the Shinigami academy. The majority of the residents of Seireitei, nobility and Shinigami alike, do not interact with the citizens of Rukongai."
Karin frowned a little. Who knew the afterlife was this elitist huh?
"Yes Kurosaki-chan, I myself am from Rukongai, as well as many other Shinigami, like Shiro-chan, we were actually a family there."
"A family? You mean Toshiro?"
Hinamori nodded.
"Yes, wandering souls are giving tickets pointing them to different directions, so we often don't find our original families once we die, and form our own bond by proximity, makeshift families."
"That's a….little sad." Karin thought about when it would be her turn to die, not to be able to find your loved ones again. But she didn't want to linger too long on these grim thoughts so she turned her head to Shinji once again.
"Captain Hirako, why were you selected to be …responsible for me?" She asked him.
"Aah I wonder." He tapped his chin and grinned widely. "Most likely because I helped train your brother years ago."
Karin blinked, surprised.
"You did?!"
Shinji chuckled completely amused.
"Who do you think taught him how to handle his hollow side? There was a time I was sort of…unwelcomed here. Hehe. And I was called a Vizard. Shinigamis who had acquired hollow powers one way or another. Your brother also developed those powers, so I had to teach him how to use them. And now I have a second Kurosaki in my pupil list." He spoke cheerfully, but Karin couldn't help but be slightly suspicious.
When they finally arrive at the barracks Shinji turns.
"Now, you are officially welcomed into the 5th division!" His grin was really something else. Karin never thought she would have seen so many teeth in one single guy.
"Momo-chan is going to give you proper Shinigami robes! I will let you girls have fun! Ah!" He paused as he was about to turn away again. "Before I forget, once you are acclimated I need to take you to captain-commander, is no big deal just to greet you and talk to you a little. No need to be scared Shunsui Kyoraku is a really chill guy." He waves his hands nonchalantly.
"Yes!" Hinamori interjected. "You are gonna love it here Kurosaki-chan! Come! Let's get you changed!" Hinamori promptly took Karin's hand in hers and rushed into the barracks. Shinji smiled and waved them goodbye.
"See you later Kurosaki-chan~"
Momo gave Karin a quick tour around the barracks of the 5th division, showing her the room where she would be staying at, which was separate from the rest of the shinigami due to her circumstances. Afterward, Momo gave her a set of Shinigami robes.
"You wear this, here are the tabi socks and the sandals too." Momo helped her get changed.
"Eeee Kurosaki-chan you look so natural in Shinigami clothes! It's like you are the real deal!" Momo complimented her but Karin squinted a bit. She didn't want to dress so…uniformly. But it would be rude to just dress as she pleased now. Maybe in the future.
"What future Karin?! Don't get carried away." She scolded herself mentally.
"But I'm not really a shinigami." Karin said.
"Yes yes..but to me, it feels like you are." Momo smiled gently and Karin couldn't help but smile back. Momo reminded her a little of Yuzu.
"You must be pretty strong too. You are the lieutenant right?" Karin's question made Momo blush a bit.
"Oh. W-well…I try my best. I'm not as strong as other lieutenants, however, Ikkaku-san and Matsumoto-san are captain-level in power. But I am glad to be able to help my captain."
"How come you didn't end up as Toshiro's lieutenant?" Karin tilted her head.
"Ah, Shiro-chan was a prodigy, his trajectory was a lot different than mine. And I…" She looked down in shame. "I became blindly faithful to the previous captain. Sousuke Aizen. But he betrayed us all." Karin flinched.
"Oh…sorry about that." Karin noticed she stepped on an eggshell there. "Well anyways, Toshiro sure can be annoying, I have no idea who his lieutenant is but I feel sorry for them." She huffed.
Hinamori could only chuckle. Karin had no idea who really made whom suffer in that division.
"Shiro-chan is not that bad. He has been through some …emotional rollercoasters lately." She tried to justify her friend's behavior.
"Hmm..I mean..he has always been grumpy when we used to play soccer but-"
Hinamori turned confused.
"Soccer? You…played soccer with Shiro-chan?"
"Ah yeah. Just a couple of times really, it was purely accidental the first time. But he was a good backup when someone couldn't play for the team."
"Huh…really? That's curious. I thought I knew everything there was to him…but I had no idea he played soccer in the human world. I'm even more surprised that it was a regular thing." Hinamori wondered why Toshiro never told her about his vacations in the human world or his interest in human sports.
"If he hadn't shown up the first time I would have been squished by a hollow, not gonna lie." Karin laughed. "Yeah…it was quite the adventure for a plain human girl. Being saved by Shinigami, seeing his sword in action. I was so easy to impress back then." Karin smiled at the memories. "Good times."
Her smile did not go unnoticed by Hinamori.
"Shiro-chan…is not really easy with friends. I've known him for many years now, and he has always had a difficult personality. Always trying to prove his worth. But I think he might still feel like your friend. Makes sense now." She nodded.
Karin tilted her head confused.
"What makes sense?"
"Why he insist on being the one to take you here when he was told he would not be responsible for your training," Hinamori concluded.
Karin blinked and furrowed her brows. This…made NO sense. He was an absolute jerk to her, besides not showing up to play for ages! Then suddenly popped out of nowhere, and dragged her around like he was the boss of her.
"Sorry but that's kind of hard to believe."
"Why is that?" Momo turned to her.
"Because he…he…I mean he never was a sweetheart that was fine, I thought his short temper was amusing, and I was used to that type of personality, but he…he just came out of nowhere and honestly never even acknowledged our past encounters. He is just curious about the-"
She paused, unsure if she should tell Hinamori about Nichirinmaru.
"The whole human with shinigami powers situation. That's all he wants to know." She squinted her eyes suspiciously. "Or he just wants payback because I ripped his robe."
Hinamori giggled. "I was right. You two really are similar."
Shinji Hirako would come back not long after.
"Kurosaki-chaaaan I came to pick you up~where are youuu- Oh! There you are!" He spotted Karin and Hinamori on the other side of the hallway.
"Now look at you! All dressed up! My division really has the cutest subordinates!" He grinned and Hinamori protested.
"Captain! Please! Don't make Kurosaki-chan feel awkward!" She huffed and puffed her cheeks. "Now is not really the time!"
"Aah sorry sorry Momo-chan! Come on! The commander is waiting."
Karin stepped towards Shinji and Momo waved her hand. "Bye bye Kurosaki-chan I will see you later."
"See you later Hinamori-san." Karin smiled. It was a good talk, this lieutenant seemed like a nice person. Still, she couldn't believe her words when she said Toshiro still saw her as a friend and that's why he wanted to be involved in her training.
Shinji began to lead her towards the 1st division's headquarters.
"Hmm..captain Hirako, sir…Hinamori-san mentioned a guy named Aizen before as a traitor. I was wondering if that is the same man who caused all the ruckus in Karakura a couple of years ago? I..wasn't able to see everything that was going on…but I heard that name being yelled a lot…"
Shinji's expression grew grave and serious.
"Yeah…you got that right. Aizen conducted experiments on hollowfication. I turned into a vizard because of him. And so did your brother. He and Urahara have always been the sort to use others for their own purposes."
Karin seemed uneasy.
"We all know Urahara is involved in how you gained these powers. Word of advice kid. Be careful. Aizen and Urahara are different only by a couple of technicalities. Don't trust people so blindly. One way or another you are a game-changer in the dynamics of power here. You are an entirely new thing. Unlike your brother, your origins are not the traditional shinigami transference. He was much more messed up with other types of powers. But just like him, you will need to learn the true nature of your powers, the true nature of your own self." The once playful captain spoke so seriously it made Karin a little nervous.
"Thank you, captain. I will keep that in mind." That was all Karin could say.
Shinji brought her to Kyoraku. The new commander of the Gotei 13, and successor of Yamamoto Genryusai. He was sitting on zabuton on the other side of the wide room in front of a table, his lieutenant standing next to him.
"Aah Kurosaki-chan is finally here! Welcome to Soul Society little one!" He greeted her with a cheerful tone. "Come come, you two sit down, let's have some tea!"
Shinji moved to sit and Karin followed.
"I hope you are enjoying your time here so far Kurosaki-chan!"
Karin was a little taken aback by his overall appearance. He looked more like a drunkard than a commander.
Kyoraku introduced himself and introduced Nanao as well.
"I know all of this must be overwhelming to you, but I wanted to assure you, that you will be absolutely safe here and you will be able to develop your abilities without worrying!" He smiled at her. "I also heard you have a fire zanpakuto, correct?"
Karin nodded, still unsure. She didn't even know if she could call it a regular zanpakuto to begin with.
"Those are quite rare. There were only two Shinigami with known fire zanpakuto. The previous commander Yama-ji..ah…excuse me, Yamamoto Genryusai. He was my old master, and wielded the most powerful fire zanpakuto there ever was."
"Who was the second?" She wondered.
"Your father. Isshin Shiba."
Karin's eyes widened.
"So..do you think I…inherited it from goat-face?"
Kyoraku chuckled at how Karin called her father.
"Something of the sort. It's a rare type of sword. Both me and your father were trained by Yama-ji. So I know firsthand how fire zanpakutos are. Which is why I would like to talk to you often about your training if you would indulge me."
He smiled from under his straw hat.
"You are a very special kid Kurosaki-chan, and all of Soul Society owes your father and brother so much. We are your allies here."
Karin nodded quietly.
Nanao cleared her throat.
"Commander. May I remind you, that you still have appointments today, about the living world anomalies."
Karin looked around noticing Shinji's shifting expression and exchanging glances with Kyoraku.
"Ah right right. Well, I will let you two go about your business now. I look forward to talking with you more Kurosaki-chan."
"Thank you, commander, cmon now Kurosaki-chan."
"Ah yes."
As they were leaving the room, Karin could hear Nanao speak to the commander again.
"The number of souls that didn't finish the crossing in Karakura are rising. It doesn't seem like it's natural at all."
"And the hollows?"
"Decreased. Is like these souls are vanishing."
Shinji closed the door and Karin could not hear anything else.
"Don't trouble yourself with these issues. Focus on your own improvement kid." Shinji encouraged Karin.
"Yeah sure. I guess I'm just getting used to how everything works here. Everything is a lot more formal than back home." She looked out from one of the windows in the hallway.
Shinji chuckled. "I bet in one day you will ask yourself how could you ever think that!" He tapped her shoulder. "In fact might do you so good to go around Seireitei on your own."
Shinji wasn't really the most mature and responsible of captains, in fact, his chaotic alignment was curious to see what kind of trouble this kid could cause inside the uptight Seireitei. Why not set her loose?
"Aaaah…you must be really bored with all this talk. Get out of here. Shoo shoo. Get going."
Karin looked absolutely confused.
"Eh? A…Are you sure?"
"Didn't I say so? Go now, don't make me repeat myself." He grinned widely and Karin smirked back at him.
"Thanks."
Karin darted off onto the streets of Seireitei.
Shinji stared at her and chuckled.
"Wee woo wee woo Kurosaki-chan is out sound the alaaarm". Shinji muttered completely amused by the prospect of chaos.
Karin used flash step to reach some higher ground and take a good look at the court of pure souls.
"EEEH! This place is SO HUGE!" She shouted from a random rooftop. She could see the Sōkyoku Hill in the distance, although she had no idea what that place was or meant yet.
"I wonder what people do here...those guys did say not everyone here is a shinigami..." She took a moment to admire the view "What do they do for fun here? Well. I guess I wont find out if I keep sitting here!" She promptly jumped down and landed!
Landed on someone.
"AAARG! WHAT THE HELL?!" A raspy voice shouted as Karin clumsily fell down on them.
"Oww" She groaned and opened her eyes seeing an armband that read '11th', a bald head beneath her and someone else standing behind them.
"HEY YOU IDIOT WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" Ikaku Madarame shouted and pushed her off him.
"WHO ARE YOU CALLING IDIOT?! You are the one that got in my way!" Karin yelled back.
"Aah...just when I thought today would have been peaceful." Yumichika sighed and rubbed his temples.
"I'M CALLING YOU IDIOT, IDIOT! YOU CANT JUMP ON PEOPLE LIKE THAT!"
Karin frowned for a second before rolling her eyes and smirking mockingly.
"What can I do if you are not prepared. Can't be helped."
Ikkaku's eye twitched. "You little...I'm gonna teach you a lesson you punk!" Thinking she was a newbie low-level shinigami, most likely recently graduated from the academy judging by her arrogance, Ikkaku reached to grab her kimono. But Karin, seeing her provocation had the expected effect, used flash step to get out of the way.
Ikkaku was surprised for sure. But he was never one to be intimidated easily. "You little...what are you gonna do now? Run away?"
"Aah maybe I don't have the disposition to argue with hairless dumbasses." She threw her arms behind her head. Yumichika however used the same flash step technique to get behind Karin.
"I wouldn't go picking fights when you are so awfully outnumbered and outgunned." He whispered charmingly, making Karin jump back startled. Yumichika leaned over to get a better look on her face.
"Aah..now you are pretty cute. I'm not gonna lie. Black hair and big round eyes. Very cute indeed."
Karin blushed at his straightforwardness.
"Oi! You idiot! Now is not the time for you to go around flirting!" Ikkaku yelled at his companion.
"Hmm? Why not? Seems like the perfect time." Yumichika chuckled and tilted Karin's chin up. "You are really lucky. Because I will not let my friend there hurt your pretty face."
"Wha-..what are you saying?" Karin was confused and flustered.
"I'm saying exactly that my little stray kitten. Truth is my friend over there would not hesitate to cut you up. But I am a fierce defensor of beautiful things. So you see, I can't let him scratch your cute face at all. That would be terrible."
Karin took several steps back, her face was red with embarrassment.
"That is SUCH a creepy thing to say!" She protested but Yumichika only chuckled amused. One way or another his conversation with her had given Ikkaku enough time to cool off.
"I will give you this one chance to apologize, you punk." Ikkaku cut in. "You don't mess with the 11th division without a fight. But I'm feeling generous today so I will let you off this once since you are new here."
"Woooow SOOOO generous." Karin rolled her eyes. " I might be new here but don't go thinking I'm scared of you just because you're frowning. I'm not gonna apologize. Someone fell on you SO what? Get over it already and stop making a big deal out of something so stupid."
If they only knew who she was, they wouldn't be surprised at all at her fiery spirit. Perhaps all Kurosakis were destined to get on Ikkaku's nerves. Yumichika on the other hand was having a blast while watching the banter, trying to restrain his chuckles.
"You really want to pick up a fi-" He didn't even manage to finish his sentence when Karin started to casually walk away. "HEY! Where do you think you're going?!"
Karin glanced back for a second before resuming her walk.
"I'm not interested in wasting time. There is still much that I want to do today instead of arguing with you."
"Hah! That's what you say, but I think you are just a little coward. What is it? Are you scared of crossing blades with me? Huh? Then I will accept whatever challenge you prefer you little punk!" He moved faster now and succeeded on grabbing her haori. Karin was surprised and a bit unsure what to do, until she had an idea.
"Oh? Then I challenge you...to a contest of kick-ups." She grinned mischievously. Ikkaku raised an eyebrow and Yumichika squinted.
"What the hell are kick-ups?" He wondered.
"If you are afraid you can just apologize to me and be on your way." She sighed as if this whole situation was a nuisance. She had dealt with competitive men before, Ikkaku was really easy to figure out just like them.
"OF COURSE I'M NOT AFRAID! Name date and place and I will beat you!"
"Then it's settled." She tapped his hand that gripped her Haori, suddenly she seemed in a very good mood, just the possibility of playing soccer made her forget the absolutely insane situation she found herself in. "I will need to get my ball, I left it at the barracks." She spoke carefreely now as if she was chatting with her old friends.
Yumichika and Ikkaku were dumbfounded at her casualty. The lieutenant let her down when she tapped his hand.
"Ah...fine. We go to your barracks fetch...this ball of yours. If you need it." Ikkaku was utterly confused and Yumichika was curious to know what this soccer ball was and what it had to do with this kick-up challenge.
"Alright then keep up". Karin said as she began to walk back to the division that was hosting her.
On their way, they crossed Rangiku.
"Oooh Yumichika, Ikkaku! What are you two doing heading this wa-" Rangiku stopped talking once she saw Karin. The spitting image of Isshin, she recognized her immediately, and it felt almost nostalgic seeing her in shinigami robes with arms crossed just like her father.
"Ah! You must be Karin-chan!" She brightened up and clapped her hands together. "I didn't expect to see you so soon!"
"You know this kid Matsumoto?" Ikkaku asked confused, and Karin looked at her just as confused. She was a little familiar, but she couldn't remember a name, Ichigo was surrounded by so many Shinigami, Karin didn't bother memorizing all their faces.
"Of course I do silly. Then again she might not know me." Rangiku giggled. "Where are you guys headed to?"
"Her division barracks. She is going to pick up some sock balls or something." Ikkaku responded and Yumichika corrected.
"It's SOCCER ball."
"OOOOOh soccer! Ah, should I call the captain then? I'm sure he would love to play with Karin-chan again!" Now all three looked clueless.
"Again?" Karin tilted her head and squinted her eyes. "Who is your captain?"
Ikkaku and Yumichika looked at Karin horrified. HOW could she not know?
Matsumoto only laughed.
"Right right, I didn't tell you. I'm Rangiku Matsumoto, lieutenant to Captain Hitsugaya of the 10th division."
Karin's eyes widened. "Oh. Him. No need. I doubt he has any interest in playing anyway." She completed looking away.
"Captain Hitsugaya knows what this kick-ups challenge is?" Ikkaku wondered muttering to Yumichika who shrugged. "So it seems?"
"Of course he does! Before Karin-chan was brought here, he used to visit her often in the human world to play with her often! And I caught him watching her games a couple of times myself." Matsumoto declared so proudly.
Needless to say Ikkaku and Yumichika were absolutely shocked.
"Whaaaaat?! Captain Hitsugaya visited this girl when she was human to play?" Karin didn't say anything but looked away a little embarrassed. Matsumoto sighed and shook her head.
"Oh never mind". Matsumoto rolled her eyes. "If there is going to be a game then I want to watch it tho!" She continued excitedly.
With Matsumoto's loud personality soon the group attracted the attention of other passing shinigami. And the strawberry-blonde lieutenant was quick to invite anyone they crossed paths with to tag along.
Karin did not expect this to escalate to a full-blown match. She sighed trying to keep things as simple as possible.
She stood in the middle of the 5th division's training ground and had her soccer ball already under her arm. It was rather opportune Toshiro dragged her when she was carrying it around. Other shinigami were sitting around the area to watch the show, while a very worried Hinamori feared Ikkaku would cause an actual fight in her division.
"It's simple. You have to keep the ball from touching the ground and you cannot use your hands or arms to touch it. That's what kick-ups mean." Karin explained the rules. "The one that does the highest number of kick-ups without dropping the ball, wins. Simple enough right?"
Ikkaku stared at the ball with squinted eyes. "I guess."
Karin sighed. She was at least try to give him a fair chance. "Like this." She dropped the ball to her feet and did a couple of simple kick-ups just to show him as an example. "One...two...three..four." And kicked the ball up to her hands with ease. "Get it?" She asked one more time tossing the ball to him. Ikkaku caught it and hesitated.
"Oh cmon! Don't tell me you are going to chicken out?" Matsumoto teased from her seat.
"SHUT UP YOU!" He barked back. "Fine! How hard can this possibly be right?" He cleared his throat and started his own count. But one kick and the ball flew up to the wall, as the bouncy fabric and Ikkaku's unmeasured strength were not a good combination.
"That's one." Karin smirked.
"I W-WAS WARMING UP!" He tried to defend himself, and Karin chuckled.
"Sure. Okay then, try again."
"One..two...three..ugh..f-four.." The ball was made from a material he was not used to at all! And he was clearly having a hard time controlling his strength. And he managed to do 13 kick-ups before losing balance and dropping the ball. Everyone who was watching nodded and thought it was pretty amazing!
"Alright then. My turn." Karin smirked mischievously.
"GO KARIN-CHAN! GO GO!" Matsumoto cheered, and Karin furrowed her brows before shrugging it off.
Karing began her kick-ups and everyone began to count out loud. It was kid's play for her. She surpassed Ikkaku's 13 kicks with ease and began to do tricks between her kick-ups, switching from the knee to the foot, back kick to shoulder, and even balancing the ball on the back of her neck. The counting grew louder as it went on and on.
It was overkill.
100 kick-ups before Karin kicked the ball towards the wall. But because she wasn't used to the high density of reishi in Soul Society, the kick was charged and the ball broke halfway into the wall. Her eyes widened thinking she was in trouble. But the destructive group didn't care at all! In fact, they all cheered for her as Yumichika patted an obliterated Ikkaku's shoulder.
"I lost." He admitted to Karin. "But next time I will win! And you will have to apologize!"
Karin laughed. "You will need to practice a lot more to beat me!"
"Do you think you can teach us?" One of the shinigami asked. "Ah! that would be awesome! Teach us!" Another one chimed in.
"T-teach you? Ah...I guess so." Karing rubbed the back of her neck. But if she was going to spend some time in this place, might as well have people to play soccer with. That didn't sound like so bad of an idea. "Yeah sure. I can teach you." She told them with a cheerful grin.

Matsumoto returned to the office of the 10th division after the whole unexpected soccer event. She couldn't help but giggle, it was the first time she had interacted with Karin directly and she felt giddy and nostalgic. She really was like Isshin in many ways, and much less finicky than her older brother. But the lieutenant's good mood would soon be threatened by a very grumpy captain who sat on his table and drummed his fingers against the wooden surface impatiently.
"Matsumoto! I thought I had told you to bring the paperwork 2 hours ago!" Toshiro scolded her as usual.
"Aaay I'm so sorry captain! I was caught up in a rather peculiar event. One that, might I add, will probably interest you." Her rosy lips curled in a coy smile.
Toshiro, on the other hand, stretched his lips in a thin line, used and unamused by the same old antics from his second seat. "What is it this time? You got Hisagi to drink with you again?"
"Oh no no, nothing of the sort. You see... I think I have witnessed the birth of Soul Society's first-ever organized soccer team!" Rangiku spoke triumphantly. Toshiro paused and turned his head to her.
"What?"
"That's what I said. Karin-chan, you know her, challenged Ikkaku to a contest and now she is teaching everyone how to play soccer." Toshiro stared at his lieutenant with a scowl. But Matsumoto was well aware he was interested in the topic and didn't want to look interested.
"So what?" He said after a moment in silence. Trying very hard to sound absolutely aloof to this.
"I did ask Karin-chan if she wanted me to come get you, since you do enjoy playing that sport right?"
"Doesn't matter what I enjoy or not. I have more important things to do." He huffed in annoyance as he began to write something on a sheet of paper.
"Ah that's what she said." Toshiro stopped.
"She said that?"
"Mhmm, she told me to not even bother telling you because you wouldn't come anyway." She paraphrased.
He frowned. This bothered him, why did she say that? Maybe she was still angry at him? He had always come when she asked him to play soccer before, why wouldn't he go now? AND WHY was this bothering him so much, was he that unreliable? He didn't say anything but his expression had 'troubled' written all over it.
"Hmmm captain... why don't you go see her? You've been more quiet than usual ever since you came back from the human world. And you even insisted in helping train her. Whatever it is that is bothering you, I don't think you will solve it by sitting behind your desk all day."
"How I feel is none of your concern, Matsumoto." He replied dryly.
"Oh but it is. A lieutenant must assist the captain in anything they might need. And you need to talk about whatever happened in the human world and set the record straight. She still is Isshin's daughter. You know they are the type to listen when someone is honest. Why don't you go?"
"Hyorinmaru is not speaking to me ever since that girl developed her powers." He revealed to Matsumoto. "I don't like to take steps in the dark like this."
"Even more reason for you to talk to her, captain."
Toshiro looked at Matsumoto, pondering on her advice.
"She doesn't want to see me."
"Oh nonsense. All you have to do is use your Bankai change into that grown-up form of yours and she won't be able to refuse you!" She smiled sweetly.
"MATSUMOTO!"
