SIOUX FALLS - NIGHT
After all the excitement at the mall, Dean was happy to see Castiel had quieted down. He was practically unconscious in the passenger seat while Dean drove them home through the quiet winter ass-land that was Sioux Falls in January.
Without even thinking, Dean turned onto Underwood Street since it was the quickest way to Bobby's. But now there were some cars idling on the bridge, blocking the road. A black truck blaring The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I go," and a commercial van with its driver's side door left open. The van had the "Inferno" logo painted on all sides, along with their timeslot and station. That's what caught Dean's eye at first, but in a moment, he noticed there was some kind of struggle up ahead. One of the drivers was being attacked a rough-looking beanpole in a biker jacket. While it might've been hard for anyone else to tell, Dean had a feeling that guy was a demon, and he had one guess where he came from.
He turned his headlights off and, leaving Castiel behind, he got out of the car quietly, drawing the angel blade he'd stashed in his jacket. Creeping over the ice until he was ready to announce his presence with the usual panache.
"You guys jacking cars, now?" he said, loud enough to draw the beanpole's attention from his victim. "Well, I guess not everybody can hack it in showbiz."
But then, whump! Dean was blindsided with a punch by a hulking demon who seemed to come out of nowhere. Dean ducked the hulk for a minute, trying to keep his footing and without letting the new guy get a hold of him, but got distracted when he heard the truck start. He saw that the beanpole was now in the back of the truck with a crate, struggling to close the tailgate. Someone else was in the driver's seat.
Dean threw off the hulk and made a break for the driver's side of the truck, nearly taking a bad spill on the slick asphalt. He got the door open and was greeted with black eyes. Relief: he could totally kill this guy. He stabbed the demon behind the wheel before he could even get the truck in gear and moved to the back of the truck. The beanpole took one look at Dean and hopped out of the back, leaving the crate behind. Dean had to catch his breath, unable to decide if he should grab the mystery box or run skinny down.
The hulk practically tackled him toward the edge of the bridge, bodyslamming him, shoulder-first, down onto the black ice, making him drop his blade as they slid for the edge. Just like Castiel had said, there was no guardrail, just a sheer drop into the river below, so dark, all you could see was a glint of moonlight in the rushing water. They both nearly went over the side, but the hulk didn't seem too bothered. He kept the upper hand and tried to choke Dean out. Dean struggled but he was clearly screwed. But before the demon could even gloat, he began sparking out, too shocked to even cry out in pain. He collapsed on top of Dean, and Dean finally saw Castiel standing over them, the blade in his hand. He helped roll the hulking demon off, but as he did, beanpole was back and dragging the crate out of the truck bed.
"Cas, the box!" Dean shouted hoarsely.
Castiel left Dean behind and launched himself on the beanpole. The demon threw a haymaker at him, but Castiel blocked it and landed one palm strike after another to the demon's face - like riding a bike. He was basically just taking his day out on the dude at this point, and Dean took the opportunity to get back on his feet, unsteady on the ice. But he saw someone else stepped out of the shadows. Someone little, but with a very big piece of driftwood in her hands.
"Meg?" was the best Dean could manage as a warning.
Yah. It was Meg, just like in the good old days of suck. She knocked Castiel in the head with her branch, hard enough to stun him, then grabbed the back of his parka and swung him with all her might, sending him right off the edge of the bridge and down into the darkness.
"Cas!?" Dean had been mid-launch after Meg and the beanpole, but there wasn't anything he could do now. He jumped off the bridge after Castiel, down into the freezing river.
