Playing cards with a trickster god was probably one of the hardest things Shadow had ever done.

Mr. Nancy smiled his gap toothed smile at him over the tops of his cards.

Shadow would not be frightened. He lowered his head to blot out the sight of the wrinkled old man sitting across from him and stared at his cards.

All diamonds. He sighed and pulled an eight from his hand.

Mr. Nancy clucked his tongue as Shadow placed his card on the table. The old man placed an ace on top of Shadow's card and pulled the pile over to him. "I win."

Never play cards with a trickster, Shadow thought as he laid his last dollar on the table.
