Sometimes, Kagome worried.
She knew she loved InuYasha. Knew it with every fiber of her being, every cell in her body.
She also knew that her mother and father had loved each other, too. Not just the silly type of love you see on television, or the type her friends at school had with their boyfriends. Her parents has been in real, true love. She knew it.
And it terrified her.
One day when she was nine, not long after Ayame's parents had gotten divorced, Kagome had sat on the roof of their shrine, watching the stars with her father. It was rare that you could actually see them in Tokyo, and so every time even the tiniest one peeked out of the sky, she and her dad would sit on their roof, and stare at them in wonder.
"Dad," she'd asked, far too old and mature to call him daddy anymore. "How long will you and mom love each other?"
Her dad smiled at her, and pointed at the brightest star in the sky. "Do you see that star?" he'd asked. She nodded, pointing at it with him and grinning. It was Their Star, the one they always looked for. He turned to her, very seriously. "I'll love your mother until the day that star falls out of the sky."
"Promise?"
"I promise," he assured her.
Kagome nodded, and leaned against him with a yawn, shutting her eyes contentedly.
Three years later, her parents were divorced, and dad had gone away to Osaka. She never saw him anymore.
When she was sixteen, Kagome ran across an old book on constellations and stars. She glanced at the clock, and then at the window. There were a few more minutes before InuYasha would come looking for her.
Biting her lip, she thumbed through the book, looking for something but not quite sure what. Suddenly, she'd found it. Their Star.
Their Star, the book said, was named Sirius (she was beginning to vaguely remember having learned this in school a few years ago). It was the dog star, and the brightest in the northern hemisphere. Her mouth twisted into a wry, brittle grin.
A few nights later, she was back in the Feudal Era. It was a calm, pretty night, and everyone was in high spirits. They'd just beaten a rat demon earlier that day in an easy battle, retreiving a jewel shard or their trouble.
"Look at the stars," Sango sighed, staring up at the brilliant night sky. "Aren't they beautiful?"
Kagome nodded. "You know, in my time," she began offhandedly, "all the stars have names."
InuYasha stared at her, disbelief painted across his features. "All of them?" he asked incredulously. He scanned the sky, taking in the innumerous pinpricks of light. Kagome nodded, though she wasn't quite sure. She assumed they all had names. Though most of them were probably things like K9GL7-2, or something equally boring. Not, of course, that she was going to tell InuYasha her little theory. He eyed her suspisciously, before pointing a clawed finger up at the brightest star in the sky.
"Alright then, what's that one called?"
The miko smiled, a little sadly. She wondered if, light years away, that star had already fallen. No one could really know, could they? After a long, thoughtful pause, she answered him.
"It's called Sirius. It's the Dog Star."
InuYasha 'keh'ed loudly, though he never took his eyes off the star.
