Chapter 1: Ivan The Vampire Hunter

Ten years later

Natalya was outside on Mr. Edelstein's porch, scrubbing their clothes on a washboard. The Edelsteins were the wealthier residents of the town of Sraftbrige. It was a hot day in the fertile months of the year and she had taken to earning money because Ivan was off traveling. Although Irunya had gotten a factory job after their father was killed one night when he and Ivan went hunting, it just wasn't enough to pay for them both and their property taxes.

Ivan would return home sporadically with a few gold coins. He told Natalya that he traveled with a group of 3 other men who killed vampires and that was left from their bounty. It was their little secret and she felt that that made them close siblings.

Natalya had never seen vampires before and wanted to travel with them but Ivan forbade her and would always leave before she could follow them. Irunya quickly silenced all talk about vampires, so she couldn't ask her to override Ivan.

Ivan told Irunya that he was a traveling candlestick maker. He made sure to pick up some candles before he arrived in town to keep up the lie.

Natalya stopped her work when she saw the familiar worn down wagon being pulled into town. But noticed something was off when there was a large tear in the canvas on the side visible to her. The brown horses that were tied to the front of the wagon were bleeding from what looked like large gashes on their legs. The horses whinnied and nayed quite loudly. Natalya could see one of the horse's snouts had a gash just under its eye.

A man with brown hair stumbled off of the wagon's front seat. His clothes were ripped and he was bleeding from an open wound on his arm. He hobbled around to the back of the wagon and opened the flapps. He stumbled backwards as a bloodied man fell onto him. Other men in the town started to approach the wagon.

Most notably Mr. Jones, a youthful man with ocean blue eyes and blonde hair. He ran over to grab the bloody man from off of the wagon driver without further hesitation. "I'll take him off your hands, sir. You worry about yourself. What happened?" He asked.

"W-we were attacked by giant wolves!" The wagon driver said, "Some of my men were left behind!"

"Alright sir, come on we'll go to Dr. Beilschimidt and then you can tell the constable." Mr. Jones led the way to the doctor's office.

Mr. Jones was a shoemaker, and was always ready to help anyone in need. He wouldn't think twice before giving someone the shirt off his back if they needed it. Natalya couldn't tell if that made him a fool or a hero, but leaned more towards him being a fool. He had two sons who worked with him. They were around Natalya's age and Irunya would often mention that she should court one of them. Natalya thought the elder son, Alfred, was an obnoxious imbicile and the other was weak and inferior for a young man. So no, she wouldn't be courting either one of them.

Another man with auburn hair looked through the wagon and shook his head when he reappeared outside. Natalya dropped the dress she was washing into the soapy water of the washing tub. She then ran up to the man, "My brother! He should be in there!"

"There is no one else in the wagon ma'am. Looks like it had been ransacked. Broken wood, and glass littered the floor too."

Natalia gripped the man's arms, "Well somebody's gotta go back out there and find him!" Her wet hands were dampening the man's white button up shirt.

"Calm down ma'am the constable should be here in a few moments. They'll send out a brigade to find him."

"Hey! What's all the ruckus about? And Natalya, you still have clothes to wash." Mrs. Edelstein, a woman with chestnut brown hair, green eyes and a pointed nose stepped out of her home. She approached the blonde haired woman and gripped her arm.

"Misses Edelstein it seems as though these travelers have been in an accident. This young maiden says her brother had been with them." The auburn haired man said.

"Well that's unfortunate but Natalya is doing a job for me. I need my clothes washed and dried for a special dinner Mr. Edelstein and I are going to with the mayor this evening." Mrs. Edelstein said and pulled Natalya back to her house.

Natalya did not say anything else but stared intently at the wagon as she scrubbed the clothes clean.

An hour or so later the constable arrived with his deputies and cleared the crowd away from the wagon. "Get back to work! Nothing to see here!" Natalya didn't like Constable Gilbert Beilschimidt. He was no stranger to twisting the law for his own benefit and he was essentially Mayor Abel Janssens's lapdog.

Natalya met the constable's ruby red eyes. He tipped his hat to her and gave her a smirk. Natalya frowned, "Constable."

"Miss Braginsky, I hear your brother is missing. Possibly attacked by wolves"

"I know. Are your men going to find him?"

"It's possible he might not be alive." His smirk was even wider.

Natalya narrowed her eyes, "You're sadistic."

"Calling the kettle black Miss Braginsky." Constable Beilschimidt let out a cackle that was only unique to him. It was like nails on a chalkboard to her ears.

When Natalya finished her work, the constable and his deputies had been gone for a few hours. She collected her change from Mrs. Edelstein and walked back home. There was nothing more she could do except wait for word from the constable.

Natalya often read through Ivan's secret collection of supernatural texts when he was away. Vampires were what caught her attention. They were vulnerable to so many things but had many abilities that allowed them to feed off of humans and fight off their enemies. She wanted to see one in person desperately.

Then she heard a loud slam as that signalled Irunya was back from working at the factory. Natalya blew out the candle she was using to read a book about purebred vampires and placed the book back in its hiding place.

"Alya!" Natalya heard Irunya call for her and she walked into the hallway. Irunya stood by the stove with a frown on her face and her hands on her hips.

"What Nyah."

"I told you to make dinner for us, you know Ivan is coming into town."

Natalya had lost track of time reading Ivan's books and had forgotten all about her sister telling her to make dinner for when she got home.

"They said Ivan is missing. He didn't come back with the rest of his men. Constable Beilschimidt is out looking for him and the other man."

Irunya suddenly collapsed into a nearby chair. Natalya rushed over to her sister whose eyes were closed. She had fainted. Natalya ran to Irunya's room to get a fan off of her vanity before returning to fan her.

A few minutes later Irunya fluttered her eyelids and stared at Natalya with her cobalt blue eyes. "Say it ain't so, sweet sister."

"It is true." Natalya nodded.

Natalya made them cornish hens for dinner. They ate it quite late into the evening around 8 pm. Irunya had just been in the middle of telling her about how her co-worker Mary had pricked her finger at one of the sewing tables at the textile mill when there was a knock at the door. It was closer to 9 now.

Irunya got up and opened it to one of the constable's deputies. He tipped his hat. "Good evening ma'am. Is this the residence of Mister Ivan Braginsky?"

"Yes it is." Irunya folded her hands together in front of her chest, Natalya assumed. The woman always did so when answering the door. "Is something wrong deputy?"

Natalya got up and approached the door. She stood a ways behind Irunya.

"We couldn't find Mister Braginsky's body but here are a few of his belongings. Two other men were found twisted and mangled. We've brought their bodies to be buried." The deputy handed Irunya a brown burlap sack.

"Does this mean he could still be alive?"

"It could mean that. I would assume the worst ma'am. People don't usually last overnight in the forest."

Irunya clutched the sack to her chest.

"So is that it? Are you just going to give up?" Natalya shouted at the deputy.

"No, we're going to search for him again tomorrow morning. Have a good night ladies." The deputy turned and walked down the path from their home. Natalya shut the door after him.

When she turned to look at her sister she had tears rolling down her cheeks.

"They'll find him Nyah."

"I don't want little Vanya to be dead!"

"He won't be! Vanya is strong."

Irunya dropped the sack and enveloped Natalya into her arms. She cried onto the other woman's shoulder. Natalya patted her back awkwardly, not one to be a source of comfort.

Irunya cried herself to sleep and Natalya was forced to stay up until she stopped doing so.

Natalya was knocking on doors asking if anyone needed their clothes washed, but she had either washed the clothes for them yesterday or they had a wife or daughter who took care of those things.

She had almost made it to the end of her neighborhood when a blond haired man with green eyes and a mustache stepped out of his home. Natalya usually didn't get this far so she rarely talked to these people. She didn't remember the man's name but had seen him around.

"Miss, are you still looking for someone to wash clothes for?"

Natalya nodded.

"Could you wash for us? My boy's funeral is in 3 days from now and my wife is real torn up about it. She won't get out of bed. Maybe you could take care of dinner as well. I'll pay you additionally for the job ."

Natalya couldn't say no to extra money. "I can do both sir."

"Thank you. I'm heading off to work at the bank. I'll pay you when I get in this evening." The man said letting her into the house before walking down the cobblestone road.

Natalya blinked, standing in the middle of the room, a couch adjacent to her and a boiler in the corner.

She walked into the hallway upon hearing some sniffles and toward a room at the further end on the left side. She peaked in to see a woman huddled under a floral blanket, her nose and eyes red presumably from crying. "Who are you?" She assumed this was the man's wife. She leaned on her elbow revealing her red hair, green eyes, and thick bushy black eyebrows. She also had freckles on her cheeks.

"I'm Natalya Braginsky. I'm here to wash your clothes. Your husband said that I could cook dinner as well. He mentioned that you were not feeling well."

"Did you hear about that group of men who came in on that wagon yesterday."

Natalya nodded, "My brother was supposed to come back with them."

"Well my son was found dead and bare as the day he was born. His wife didn't even know he was gone until he didn't come home from work. What was he doing in the forest and why was he there?" She lamented.

"I don't know Misses…?"

"Kirkland. Did they find your brother Miss Braginsky?"

"He is still missing."

Mrs. Kirkland shook her head, "It is strange indeed." She sighed, "I would like to be left alone. I hope you don't think ill of me for neglecting my homemaking duties. But I cannot get myself out of bed for I am too distraught." She said as tears fell down her cheeks. "The clothes, washboard and tub should be in the room across the hall."

Natalya nodded and went across the hall to grab two sacks of clothes in one hand. She put the washboard under her arm and picked up the tub with her other hand.

"Where is the clothing line?"

"On the side of the house."

Natalya went out the front door and stood by the clothing line. Natalia noticed the watering hose was there too and filled up the tub. Then she went back inside to get the soap and the third sack of clothing.

When Natalya scrubbed, rinsed and finally hung to dry all of the Kirklands' clothes, it was around evening. Natalya assumed she had enough time to make dinner for them and then go home and make dinner for herself and Irunya. Natalya took the tub and washboard back to the room across from Mrs. Kirkland. Natalya glanced over into her room and noticed she was buried under the covers again.

Natalya was going to wonder where the food was when she saw carrots, a bag of potatoes, and a bag of onions sitting on the counter by the oven in the kitchen. In the sink sat a slab of raw beef that she could assume was a pot roast.

Natalya checked the grandfather clock that was in the living room, where the front door was located, and saw that it was half past 4.

Natalya sighed and got started peeling the potatoes.

Natalya had just taken the finished pot roast out of the oven when the door to the Kirkland home opened with a loud slam as it swung back on its hinges. Natalya put the roast on top of the counter when Mr. Kirkland entered the room.

"Mhmm! Smells delicious Miss…"

"Braginsky. And thank you Mr. Kirkland. You are just in time. I have to hurry home to cook dinner for my sister."

"I'm sorry to hear that. I was hoping you'd stay and have some of the meal you cooked for us."

"That is a nice gesture but-"

"You would've been able to meet my sons. They're around your age. Unless you're already courting someone." Natalya noticed the crows feet around his eyes

Natalya shook her head and walked towards Mr. Kirkland who was digging around in his pants pocket for his wallet.

"It's a real shame." Mr. Kirkland shook his head. "They should be coming back from the factory about now. Hard working boys, I assure you." Natalya watched as he pulled out the green banknotes that he would be paying her.

"Maybe another time." She said, holding out her hand.

Just then she could see two soot covered, flat cap wearing, blond haired, young men enter the house. "Father, what smells so good?" The taller blond asked.

When she gripped the money, Mr. Kirkland smiled and she knew she was staying for dinner even if she really didn't want to.

So here she was beside the shorter blonde who looked like he wanted to be here even less than she did. The taller blond was right across from her. Mr. Kirkland was at the head of the table and Mrs. Kirkland didn't want to leave her room, so earlier Mr. Kirkland brought her her dinner.

He smiled at her, Natalya did not return the gesture.

"So Miss Braginsky, what are you looking for in a future husband?" Mr. Kirkland asked.

Natalya swallowed a piece of potato she had just finished chewing, "Someone who can support myself and my sister. I don't want her to continue working at the factory, it is very tough on her back and hands.

Mr. Kirkland smiled and clasped the taller blond on his back, "Well Dylan tell Miss Braginsky what job you're applying for."

Natalya made eye contact with Dylan, who didn't shy away from it. "I just put in my application for a position at the fire department in Sraftbridge. They said they would let me know if I would be receiving a scheduled interview sometime next month in the mail." Natalya saw the man was confident in himself and she personally liked confidence in a man. Not arrogance, arrogance angered her.

Natalya nodded, "That is selfless, wanting to risk your life for other people."

"At first I didn't know what I wanted to do until I saw the fire department in action when they put out a fire at the textile factory a few years back."

"I remember that. My sister works in textiles, she was weeping when she got home that day."

"That must have been quite traumatic for her." Dylan's eyes softened as he frowned.

"My sister weeps about everything, so it's hard to keep up on what has scarred her or what scared her for the day." Natalya shrugged before eating a carrot.

"Well maybe I should expect to see you around more often, Miss Braginsky." Mr. Kirkland said, looking pleased with himself. He reminded her of Irunya, she was the same way when they were in church and there just so happened to be another boy her age there.

"If you need me to wash more clothes." Natalya said and Mr. Kirkland chuckled as though she was making a joke.

Mr. Kirkland proceeded to talk about his day at the bank and Dylan spoke up about he and Arthur, who she learned was the blond she was sitting next to, and their day at the steel mill factory. How one of their co-workers broke his leg from a steel bar falling on it. He wouldn't be able to work for at least a month and wasn't getting paid by the company for the accident.

0000000000

It was almost 8 o'clock and now the sun had set. Natalya was surprised when Arthur, who had said nothing at dinner, offered to walk her home.

"You're Ivan Braginsky's sister aren't you?" He asked once they were outside.

She looked at him but he avoided her gaze, gaze still straight ahead.

"Yes. You know my brother?"

"Not personally, my brother Connor mentioned him to me a few times. He's quite infamous in the world of the supernatural."

Natalya stopped suddenly. Arthur had continued walking a few feet before looking back to see she wasn't still walking with him. Natalya wasn't sure but for a moment it looked like his eyes were glowing, but then she blinked and it didn't look like that anymore. He stopped and she walked ahead to meet with him.

"You know that big brother was a vampire hunter?" Natalya asked him, shocked that someone else knew of their little secret.

Arthur nodded, "My brother was with your brother and his group when they were attacked."

"Do you know what attacked them?"

"Werewolves. They killed him." Arthur said, almost as though he growled. "I want revenge, do you think your brother would be willing to help me?" Arthur looked at her then, straight in the eyes for the first time all night.

"Ivan is still missing. But I will help you, I want to find him."

Arthur shook his head, shoving his hands into his pockets."You can't help me, you're just a young lady. If you got hurt I would be punished."

Natalya balled up her fists, glancing over at him.

"I'll just find him alone. There's nothing else you-" He continued, gazing still on the path ahead.

Natalya pulled out a knife and held it up to the boy's throat and shoved him against the side of some stranger's home. She gripped his hair with her other hand.

"No! I'm not letting another person forbid me from the supernatural! You either agree to cooperate with me or I kill you where you stand!" She felt her heart beat in her chest, an exhilarating thrill to be in control. To demand what she wanted and not take no for an answer. She assumed that men felt like this all the time.

There was no way she could debate if she saw his eyes glowing this time, they were, and he gripped her wrist with an alarming amount of strength. He growled and she could see his teeth were sharp, and pointed, but not in a normal way. He forcefully pulled her arm away from his throat and she stumbled back a few feet from him and onto the ground. His eyes went back to normal, and his expression turned to shock.

"What are you?" Natalya breathed, trying to get her bearings together as she gripped her knife even tighter.
