Chapter 3: Lovino The Coach Driver
Natalya and Arthur walked into the town of Beavergonie, her arm looped in his. She could feel stares on the side of her face. She challenged the stares, noticing that they were from young maidens, they shied away from her after she met their eyes.
"What are we looking for?" Natalya muttered, as she looked around the bustling town. Beavergonie was a larger town, with agriculture as its main source of production. Ranchers also passed through Beavergonie to trade off livestock.
"Someone who might have seen your brother last." The irritation in his voice had never left.
"Ivan buys candles from this town after every trip. It is what he tells Irunya that he sells on his travels."
"Perfect, check the journal, maybe he specified a specific candleshop."
Natalya unlinked their arms and grabbed the journal from her sack. She could feel him staring at her, not with intrigue, but annoyance. She ignored it. She did not have time for him to be upset over losing their argument.
Aug. 22. 1889
Almost forgot to get the candles. Antonio asked why I continue to lie about it. Not everyone could be as accepting as your family, I said. He said I wouldn't know unless I told the truth.
Antonio is a fool.
Mr. Thomas expects me by now. He always has a set packaged and ready for me. I give him business and he doesn't question why I order so many.
I do not want to stop now, the lie is too big.
Ivan
Natalya flipped back further into the journal and skimmed until she found what she was looking for.
June 24. 1884
I've decided that getting candles in Sraftbridge would be too difficult. Word would get around quickly. I do not want gossip.
Found a place, Flights of Fancy, that sells candles. Antonio, Harvey, and Clyde bought candles to take to their families too.
I hope Irunya likes the smell of lilies. Natalya would like the smell of vanilla, she likes sweets. Sometimes too much. No man wants a portly wife. Would the candle-
Natalya stopped reading and shut the journal with a frown. "Flights of Fancy, that is where we need to go."
Arthur looked up and around, "I don't see that from where we are. We'll have to ask someone."
Natalya felt another burning stare on the side of her head. She turned quickly to see a thin blonde haired young maiden with blue eyes, quickly averting her gaze. She also had abnormally high cheekbones.
Natalya walked towards the maiden whose cheeks were salmon colored.
"Hey, do you live here?"
The maiden nodded hurriedly.
"Where's a shop called Flights of Fancy?" The woman visibly trembled under Natalya's intense gaze.
"U-uh-...!" Her voice was barely above a whisper.
"Do you know or not? I don't have all day!" Natalya put her hands on her hips.
"You're frightening her, darling." Natalya looked over to see Arthur now at her side, a smile on his face. He turned to the maiden and tipped his hat, "Apologies ma'am, we're not from around here and my fiance doesn't interact with many of the ladies from our town."
The maiden smiled back at him, "That makes sense. I haven't seen you two around." She curtsied, "What brings you to Beavergonie?"
"We're looking for a candle shop by the name of Flights of Fancy."
"Oh shoot, I don't know exactly where that is. But give me a second, I know Pat does." The blonde ran off down the road to knock on a door, presumably where Pat lives.
Natalya looked over at Arthur, eyes squinted. He looked back at her, eyebrow raised.
"What?"
"No fair, you put her under some kind of spell."
I-I did-!" He sputtered before he sighed, "You know what, fine. Whatever."
"I'm watching you, you won't get me with your vampire spells."
He paused a moment before he leaned in close, his eyes glowing. "Are you sure?"
Natalya turned her head away, "I won't let you." she said, her voice just above a whisper. She'd backed herself into a pillar, feeling the wood against the middle of her back.
She tried to steady her breathing. If she was going to get bit here, so be it. His nails dug into the pole she was against, she could hear the wood beginning to split.
"You don't have a choice." He said and she could feel his breath hot on her neck.
"Apologies for the wait, friends! Pat just had to shoot the breeze with me about this new sewing material she found." Natalya snapped her head towards the maiden, who didn't question the position the two found themselves in.
"No problem at all." Arthur said, and Natalya spared a glance at him to see him smiling at the maiden again.
"Alright so Pat said that you go down this road until you see Melrose Pharmacy and then you make a right. Once you see James's Shoes you make a left. It should be three shops down. You can't miss it."
"Thank you ma'am," Arthur tipped his hat and gripped Natalya's arm, "If you excuse us, we'll be on our way."
Natalya followed along before she pulled out of his grip. She frowned at the angry red mark left in its place.
The shop had Flights of Fancy on a wooden sign outside of the door. Natalya pulled the door handle and they went in.
Natalya stomped up to the counter. The gray haired mustached man tipped his glasses up upon their arrival. He set down his paper.
"Are you Mister Thomas?"
"Yes ma'am, now what can I do for you?"
"Do you know my brother Ivan Braginsky?"
"Oh yes, he's one of my favorite customers. Did he give you one of my candles?"
"Yes, I've gotten a few. Have you seen him?"
"A few days ago, I believe he came in for his candles like usual. Why? Did something happen?"
"He's missing. Do you happen to know what exactly my brother did on his travels?"
Mr. Thomas leaned in close to Natalya, "The supernatural?"
Natalya nodded and whispered, "Did he tell you?"
Mr. Thomas leaned back and looked behind her at Arthur.
"Are you-?"
"We're together." He said.
Mr. Thomas lifted up the counter and walked towards the door. He locked it with a click. "Your brother often said they were angering the head vampire in charge. No hunter has ever seen him, and his location is hard for hunters to find but apparently they had a lead. I suspect the vampires kidnapped him."
"How would we find him then?"
"I would say ask the vampires with important positions in the vampire monarchy."
"How are we supposed to know who that is? They all look the same!" Arthur spoke up then.
"There is a text that discusses these things in depth but a werewolf pack that contains all alphas has it."
"How the bloody hell are we supposed to get that?" Arthur asked, his eyebrows furrowed.
"I'm sorry. I don't know an easier way than direct confrontation."
"And you don't sell silver bullets," Arthur pinched the bridge of his nose, face scrunched in agitation.
"No sir." Mr. Thomas said, "But I know who does. Maybe something here would interest you on your trip there?"
Arthur shook his head, "I would sir but we don't have money to spare."
Especially if we need silver bullets.
"A little something for the information I gave you? My custom made soap is discounted by half for the next two days." Mr. Thomas leaned over by a shelf and picked up said soap.
"Apologies, again. Would you please unlock the door?" Arthur said as he walked towards the door.
"Does this lavender candle interest you? Or maybe sweet vanilla?"
"I think we should be going, Mister Thomas." Natalya said.
"Ocean spray?" The man's smile dropped, and his eyes were cold.
"If you don't open the door, I'll break it open."
"It's highly unlikely you could, those locks are the strongest around. Even if you could, you'd have to pay for the damages."
Arthur gripped the handle, and pulled. The wood of the door started to groan and creak, as though it was giving way.
"I think you should open the door." Natalya muttered, "He looks like he's going to break it." Mr. Thomas blinked and rushed over, gripping Arthur's arm.
"Hey! Stop that right now, young man!"
"Then open the door!" There was something off about the way he said it. Mr. Thomas visibly jumped, startled.
"Fine! Fine!" Mr. Thomas dug into his pockets and hurriedly found his key to unlock the door. Natalya followed Arthur out of the store and they continued to walk straight until Arthur stopped suddenly.
"How are we going to find silver bullets?"
"I know a place that sells them back home, but it was $9 for a case of 19 and just the shells."
"Nine dollars?! I can't afford that." He started to pace back and forth.
"Your father works at a bank, yes?"
"He doesn't get paid much more than I work at the factory. Plus what about our food?"
Natalya had brought as much as she could. "I have enough for food." She muttered. He walked past her again.
"What are we going to do now? We're at a halt." He turned around to walk past her in the opposite direction.
"Can't you just ask a vampire about the hierarchy? If you're a vampire why wouldn't they just tell you?"
He continued to walk before he stopped right in front of her. "How many times do I have to tell you-" his eyebrows raised, "I have an idea!"

Arthur and Natalya searched around for a few hours for some bones from some dead animals in the forest. Then Natalya started sharpening the small ones into what looked like fangs. She washed them in the river that was just outside of the forest.
Natalya tied the "fangs" around Arthur's top canines with a loose thread from her dress.
"Don't you already have fangs?" She asked as she tied the knot around the first one.
"Sure but I don't want to accidently bite you."
"Right." She muttered.
At dusk they went back into the forest and found another clearing, away from Beavergonie.
Natalya sat on the ground, her lamp nearby. Arthur was in position behind her, hands on her shoulders. The fake canines pressed into her exposed neck, they tickled but Natalya ignored it. She took in a deep breath before letting out the loudest scream she could.
They waited.
And waited.
And soon just as she was about to feel cramped from being in the same position, half leaned over, there was some rustling in the bushes.
Then they were both staring down the barrel of a gun.
"Step away from her you bastard!" Natalya blinked at the olive skinned man with dark brown hair and hazel eyes who had his gun pointed right between Arthur's eyes.
Arthur took a step back from her fully, she couldn't feel his hands on her shoulders.
"Are you hurt Miss?" The man's hazel eyes softened upon looking at her. He held out a hand to help her up.
Natalya slapped it away, "No! We were waiting for a vampire to show up and you ruined it!" Natalya got up and dusted off her dress.
"What!?"
"Unless you've got silver bullets I don't have to explain anything to you! C'mon Arthur let's find another clearing." Natalya said, stomping towards the edge of the clearing.
"Are you two mentally insane? Why the hell are you trying to lure those monsters?"
"You heard what I said."
Natalya turned back to see Arthur wasn't following her, instead he was gaping as the man opened his rifle to reveal it was loaded with silver bullets. She walked back over to them,
"We're trying to find my brother and the only way to do that is to track down a pack of werewolves who have the text that reveals the location of the head vampire."
"Who is your brother?"
"Ivan Braginsky."
"He traveled with my friend, Antonio Carriedo!" The man gasped. "I'm looking for the pack of werewolves that killed him!"
"It is probably the same pack of werewolves that killed my brother, Connor. With hope the alpha pack will be able to identify them as well."
"What if the alpha pack killed them?" The man asked.
"It will make our journey easier." Natalya said.
"Well I suppose you're our third party. I'm Arthur Kirkland, glad to make your acquaintance." Arthur gave him a close lipped smile and held out a hand to shake.
"I don't shake hands with vampires."
"Oh these fangs aren't-."
"Don't be like that. Arthur hasn't tried to bite me once." Natalya said before she curtsied, "Natalya Braginsky."
The man bowed, " Lovino Vargas, nice to meet you."
Natalia didn't notice before but a curl protruded up from under his hat in the front.
"I may or may not have stolen a company owned coach. If I get caught, you're going down with me." Lovino said, turning around and leading the way through the forest.
They were going along at a leisurely pace until Lovino pulled back the branches to reveal the river and a coach right by the shoreline.
The horse neighed upon seeing them, in distress. Natalya noticed a pair of red eyes. She held out her lamp, revealing that there were three vampires in total but the others didn't have glowing eyes.
"Now you come when we don't need you!" Natalya said.
"We thought we heard only one but it turns out we have two humans to feast on." The red eyed vampire with blonde hair and pale skin said.
Natalya took out her stakes. She felt a grip on her shoulders.
"You're gonna protect me right Natalya?" Lovino said. Natalya looked back at him, as he was right behind her.
"You've got a gun!"
"Silver doesn't work on vampires!"
"Use the gun to knock them down!"
"Didn't you hear me? Silver doesn't-"
Natalya was going to respond when she felt a sharp pain in her neck. She screamed before making eye contact with the red eyed vampire.
A second or so later he was pulled off of her. "Stop talking and start moving!" Arthur yelled.
Natalya nodded and set her sights on a black eyed vampire, who physically looked like a blonde haired woman.
Natalya ran up to her and readied her stake but at the last moment she moved. Natalya felt a kick straight in the middle of her back. She stumbled onto the ground, and braced herself with her hands.
She looked up just to receive a swift kick to the face. Natalya shook her head as spots danced in her vision. The pain in her neck pulsed and she felt a little drowsy. She raised her stake just as the vampire kicked her in the chin, and stabbed one of the vampire's feet.
"You bitch!" The vampire screeched. Natalia used all of her body weight to tackle the vampire to the ground.
The vampire threw Natalya into a tree. Her head throbbed, and she could barely keep her eyes open. The vampire hissed and she felt another sharp pain in her neck. Natalya pushed another stake into the vampire's heart while she was so close to her. As she slipped into an almost blissful sleep, the vampire screamed in agony before dissolving into ashes.

When Natalya awoke again, something was wet and warm against her neck. She was aware of the velvet on the seat of the coach and the moonlight peaking through the glass windows. She could feel the slight bumps of the coach as they road over rocky terrain.
She looked over to come face to face with a black muzzle. It was a dog, an Anatolian Shepherd to be specific with blond fur and green eyes.
"Since when did we obtain a dog?" Natalya looked around to see she was the only one in the coach. They were moving so Arthur and Lovino must have been up front.
How long was I out?
Natalya gingerly touched her neck and found it was not sore to the touch. She couldn't feel where the vampires bit her, although it was a little wet.
Oh good heavens! Am I going to be turned into a vampire?
The dog they apparently picked up, barked at her, before wagging its tail.
"What? I'm not a dog person. You're not getting any rubs from me." Natalya moved the dog away from her with her foot before sitting upright. Which caused it to whine.
Suddenly the coach stopped. Natalya looked out the window to see they were at the edge of a clearing.
Lovino opened the coach door. "We'll set up camp here. I'm damn tired. Good, you're awake and...Arthur's still a ...dog. Pass me a blanket and pillow." He muttered.
Natalya looked around and grabbed a blanket and pillow that was on the seat across from her, passing it to him.
Natalya stepped out of the coach. "A what?"
"I'll explain tomorrow. I'm too tired for this tomfoolery right now." Lovino said, picking a spot on the ground and laying down before closing his eyes.
Natalya grabbed her sack out of the coach. She made a fire for them to keep warm, the horse too who was nearby. Natalya decided to keep watch. The dog curled up and slept as well.
Was it really possible that Arthur was this dog?
"Arthur? Is that you?"
The dog didn't move, still asleep.
Natalya shook her head. This is foolish, talking to a dog. If anything she assumed Arthur was off with the vampires.
Maybe big brother's journal has where the werewolf packs stay.
Natalya flipped through Ivan's journal and landed on,
Oct. 13 1884
We ran out of bullets so we tried to avoid the places we marked as wolves dens.
Clyde was responsible for marking them on his map; he assured us this was the right path. Although, we ran into a few betas and had to retreat. We threw out most of our food to them.
We are now making our way up the river. Our chances of making it to town are low. This may be my last entry.
Natalya frowned and flipped through the journal again.
Oct. 29 1884
We found the betas who'd stolen our food. We let them live within an inch of their lives because they gave us valuable information, the location of the pack with two alphas.
We just have to travel along the Rio Grande, towards Albuquerque.
Ivan
A few hours later, the fire had died down considerably. Her eyes stung and she was going to wake Lovino up to start his watch when she heard a cracking sound. She thought it was twigs snapping so she looked around. The horse was sleeping, and no bushes rumbled. She looked at Lovino sleeping peacefully and then the dog.
The dog's fur was shorter than before and it's muzzle was receding. It's neck stretched a bit longer than what it was before. Natalya watched as the dog's legs started to grow in length, only increasing the cracking sounds. Natalya grabbed her oil lamp and stood up. She walked over to the dog that barely had fur on it at this point, and it's now growing thumbs. A loud snap made it appear to have front facing knees.
What the devil is going on?
After watching for a few more moments the dog was not a dog anymore.
A/N: Thank you for reading!
I actually hadn't thought about werewolves and their bones resetting until watching a Key and Peele transitional sketch recently and they were driving on a road talking about it. Key said that he would've been too much of a bitch to become a werewolf for this reason and instead opted for becoming a vampire.
So yeah, ew, just know this physically hurt me to write.
Also, Romano! You guys like his debut? I love Romano. He hasn't been a main character in any of my stories yet and I'm so excited to write him.
