Chapter 4: Arthur The Weredog
Natalya shook Arthur awake, "Wake up you son of a bitch!"
Arthur groaned before he squinted his eyes open, "What?"
"Don't, 'what?', me! You were a dog!" She yelled.
"What's all the yelling about?" Lovino groaned from his place a short distance away. He was still huddled under his blanket.
Arthur blinked before looking down at himself and slapping his hands over her eyes, "Don't look! Close your eyes!"
Natalya groaned, "I don't care, I'm not a prude." gripping his wrists.
"No! That's highly indecent!"
"Here! Goddamn, you don't at least change back in your underwear? I didn't want to wake up and see that." Natalya heard Lovino say before the sound of a soft thump. "I just met you." He muttered.
Arthur removed his hands, now wrapped up in Lovino's blanket. Arthur stood up, his face a dark shade of crimson.
Natalya stood up and glared at him, "You owe me an explanation."
"I told you I wasn't a vampire!"
"You didn't tell me you could turn into a damn dog! Do you eventually turn into a wolf too? Were you planning to eat us?"
"Yeah, how do we know weredogs don't feast on humans too!" Lovino said, having stepped away from Arthur and behind Natalya.
"We don't! We protect humans, just like regular dogs do. I would have told you Natalya, but I hadn't assumed our journey together would be long. I thought we'd find your brother and you would go back home. And Lovino we just met, does it really bother you?"
"Yes! Well no, I hadn't thought about the fact that you could eat me until Natalya brought it up." Lovino crossed his arms, "Thank you for uh, saving my ass back there," he muttered.
Arthur smirked, "My were you helpless, screaming your head off like an infant."
"Quiet! I had never seen a vampire before and I didn't have the right weapons! Next time, I'll show you!"
"Whatever you say," His smirk not leaving his lips.
Natalya crossed her arms, "Well I'm still not a dog person."
"What? How could you not like dogs?" Lovino waved his arms animatedly. "Back home, Romeo would guard mi papa's ranch. Saved us a lot of trouble having to buy more sheep, you know those damn wolves would eat them." Lovino nodded.
"I'm not sure that makes me feel better." Arthur muttered.
Natalya turned away from them, "I'm going to bed, one of you keep watch." Natalya found a spot near the fire, curled up and slept with her head on her sack.
That morning Natalya awoke and Arthur was fully clothed again. Lovino had brought some canned beans with him. These were his last three. They ate in silence, Natalya was still upset that Arthur didn't tell her about his abilities and that he didn't see them as equals.
She felt a burning shame deep down for being wrong. She grit her teeth, A fool, a downright fool. Natalya was not one to be made a fool of. She would show Arthur that he should be lucky to have her as a partner. And when they found Ivan, she wouldn't be sent home.
"So as a dog, can you consume raw meat?" Lovino asked, mouth a little full with beans.
"I assume so. I've never actually tried. I don't usually stray too far from home and return in time for dinner." After a moment's pause he frowned, "I really am a dog on a leash! Am I losing my mind to canine instincts?"
"Calm down. None of us travel." Natalya said, scooping a spoonful of beans. "I've always wanted to get out of Sraftbridge, but big brother wouldn't let me."
Lovino nodded, "Never had a reason to leave is my first time away from El Paso. And if you do decide to go rogue, there's something we can kill you with right?"
"No. If I decide to tear you apart right now, there's nothing you could do about it." His expression was completely serious. A moment of silence passed, Natalya swallowed another spoonful of beans.
To which Lovino screamed, "Why me!?" He almost dropped his can of beans.
"I'm just pulling your leg. Anything that can kill you, can kill me." He smirked.
Hmm good to know.
"A heart attack, you want me to have a heart attack." He grumbled, his spoon scraping the can. "So no special bullets dipped in gold or some kind of special flower like flame lilies?"
"No. Just regular bullets, and poisoned plants." He said before spooning beans into his mouth.

Natalya told Arthur and Lovino that they were headed up the Rio Grande and through the unmarked New Mexico territory west of Texas. They were going to stop in El Paso, a day's travel from where they were. Lovino was upset to find out they were going back to where he came from. He told Arthur to be on the lookout because they were looking for this coach and by extension Lovino.
"I've been driving the coach since yesterday and I'm damn tired and in need of a siesta. Arthur you drive."
"But I've never driven a coach before."
"All you need to do is hold onto the reins, and say "go" to move her and "whoa" to stop with a little tug. We aren't going fast so you shouldn't have to worry about controlling Betsy or whipping the reins."
"That hardly qualifies me to drive a coach, but fine." And that's how they were on the road now.
Natalya sat in the coach as Lovino snored away. He was curled up on the seat across from her.
Natalya checked her neck in the river before they left, it looked completely fine. It was as if she had never been bitten.
Natalya stared at the scenery of trees and the river as they made their way along. She wondered if Irunya found her letter yet, technically she had only been gone for two days at this point, maybe she hadn't noticed.
Maybe she thought Natalya was having dinner with the Kirklands again.
But if Natalya was being honest she knew Irunya was fretting over her right now. She might have fainted from reading the letter and when she woke up she went straight to the constable.
Suddenly Natalya could feel that they had halted. Natalya looked out of the window but couldn't see anything. Whatever was happening was in front. Natalya couldn't see anything from where she was but she did hear voices.
"Is there a problem, deputy?"
"We were told to be on the lookout for a stolen Pullman company coach and the driver, a man of darker skin and brown hair." The deputy said.
"No, I haven't seen anyone like that around here." Natalya quickly threw Lovino's blanket over his face, and crouched to the floor of the coach.
"I'm just passing through before I make my way to Albuquerque. I'll be picking up the mayor and his wife. They have an important dinner to go to."
"Oh that's quite a long way sir. I don't want to hold you any longer. Good morrow sir!"
"Good morrow!"
Natalya peeked her head above the floor to look out the window. Just then she heard the soft clacks of hooves as an officer went past them on a brown horse.
Then she heard Arthur yell, "Go!" and they were moving again.
It was around midday when they stopped again. Natalya shook Lovino to wake him.
Lovino groaned and turned around.
"Wake up!" She yelled and shook him harder. "You almost got caught."
Lovino opened his eyes before sitting up and stretching, "But I didn't! So that's great."
Natalya opened the coach door, and Arthur was leaning against the side of the coach.
Natalya noticed he had a thick mustache, stubble on his chin and hair on his arms.
She raised an eyebrow.
"I can make my hair grow partially. A pretty good disguise, yeah?"
"It makes you look like your father, if he didn't shave."
Arthur frowned, "Are you trying to insult me?"
"I am just stating a fact." She shrugged and took out her knife. "Come, help me catch lunch."
"What?"
"Dogs catch fish, yes?"
Arthur's face turned a familiar shade of crimson. "I'm not going into the river to catch fish!"
"How are we going to eat? Lovino gave us the last of his beans!"
"You go in and catch fish with your hands! I drove here! Haul your weight!"
"I was going to gut them with my knife. Just go in you coward! I don't want my dress to get wet."
"You two are always fighting about something. What is going on now?" Lovino stepped out of the coach.
"He won't catch us fish!" Natalya turned to Lovino who had a sack of what looked like apples.
"We can just eat those!" Arthur gestured to the sack.
"These are for Betsy." Lovino sighed, " I guess I'll solve this dilemma...again. Get your lazy ass in that river dog boy!" Lovino said, expression serious.
To which Arthur bared his teeth, now sharp, his green eyes glowed and he growled.
Lovino jumped back, "You know what? I'm going to feed Betsy." He briskly walked past them to the horse, Betsy, was taking a drink from the river.
"This is why you should catch fish."
"I'm not taking orders from you." Arthur crossed his arms.
She walked up to him and before he could react she swiped across his cheek with her knife.
"What-?" He reached up to feel the blood now running down his right cheek.
Natalya backed up, "Come at me dog boy!"
She readied her knife.
"I'm not going to fight you! Are you mad?"
"You afraid?"
"No! I'm obviously stronger than you and it's unbecoming of a gentleman to hit a young lady."
To which Natalya stabbed him in the arm. On reflex he pushed her back and she stumbled to the ground. She kicked up a bit of dust and hit her elbow on the ground. Her heart was beating rapidly in her chest and she felt thrilled.
Natalya stood back up, and held up her fists. Her knife was still in Arthur's arm. She watched as his eyes glowed, and he growled. He took the knife out of his arm, the knife now coated with blood, and ran towards her. She tried to dodge but still got cut on her arm anyway.
She tried to kick him but he caught her ankle and tossed her to the side. She fell to the ground and just managed to roll away just avoiding getting stabbed in the shoulder.
She realized quickly that this might not have been a good idea.
Natalya scrambled up and made her way towards the edge of the river. But was halted by a grip on her arm.
"Alright, you win." Natalya held up her hands in surrender.
Arthur's eyes dimmed and his teeth returned to normal. He let her go and wiped the blood from his face with the back of his hand.
"Apologies for being rough with you." He said.
Natalya looked behind her, just close enough to fall into the river if she lost balance.
"Come on, away from the edge." Arthur said. She continued to stare at him, not moving forward, but back instead.
"Hey, I apologize. You don't have to be scared. Come on." He stepped toward her, expression softened.
Natalya stepped backwards again and as he reached for her, she pulled him down with her and into the river.
Natalya could feel the impact as she hit the water first. It was quite painful before there was a surrounding pressure that made her ears pop. She closed her mouth and opened her eyes to the murky depths.
She flailed her arms but did not know how to swim so she wasn't moving anywhere. The surface seemed to get further away, the sun just a blur filtering light to her eyes.
Then she felt a sharp tug on her sleeve and she was pulled to the surface.
Once above water she gasped.
She looked to see that Arthur was a dog again. He made a sound that could be the equivalent of an exasperated sigh.
"What? I didn't know the river was too deep to fish in without a boat." She said as she wrapped her arms around his neck. She looked around and managed to grab his clothes that were floating a short distance away.
"Whoa is the river that deep?!" Lovino said, rushing to the edge and holding out a hand for her to grab. She held out her hands and grabbed Lovino's arms and he pulled her up onto the edge of the clearing.
As she wrung out her hair, Lovino grabbed Arthur and picked him up out of the water, "I think you're more tolerable in this form. Should I dry you off?"
"You don't have to dry him off Lovino. He's not an actual dog."
"I know, but he looks so sad. Aren't you a soggy doggy? The mean lady tricked you and got you wet." Lovino said, setting Arthur down.
"I admit I shouldn't have tricked you. But you are stubborn too."
Natalya threw Arthur's wet clothes on top of him. He shook them off and went into the coach briefly. He reappeared with new clothes in between his teeth. Arthur walked past them and went beyond the tree line. A few minutes later he reappeared after a bit of rustling, as a fully clothed human.
"Why do I always have to do what you say? Don't you ever have to compromise?" He asked her.
"No." She listened to him and followed his direction and he would do the same to her. Why is he acting like this now?
"You are incorrigible." Arthur shook his head.
So the three of them found twigs and tied loose threads from their clothes to one end of the twigs. On the other end of the thread they tied safety pins and crickets. Natalya changed her clothes and laid the damp ones by the fire. She wrapped a piece of her dress around her arm and did the same to Arthur to stop the bleeding from their wounds. Her and Arthur's hair was still wet though as they sat and waited for their lines to get bites from fish.
"So if you both argue a lot, why are you traveling together?" Lovino asked, he was sitting next to her.
"She forced me to take her along! I would've been perfectly happy finding Ivan on my own." Arthur was on the other side of Lovino.
"Ivan is my brother and I want to find him, so I have a right to be here. I think we work well together, Arthur is just stubborn." Natalya said, looking past Lovino and at Arthur.
"So are you two engaged or married or something?" He looked between them.
"No, we just met a few days ago but we're both from the same town. I was washing his family's clothes and Mister Kirkland told me to stay and meet his sons."
"So he arranged for you two to be courted."
"No. We are just acquainted."
"And after this excursion is over, it is my hope that we do not interact again." Arthur said.
Natalya glared at him. "Lovino what is El Paso like? I think it'd be beneficial to know since we are traveling there." He continued, ignoring her gaze.
"It's a large city, with ranches and the governor eating all of our resources. And everyone goes to the Catholic church. So even if you're not, say you're Catholic."
"Are you going to go see your family? You won't see them for a while." Natalya asked.
"Papa doesn't even care that I'm gone. He's too busy trying to gather up enough to send Feli through Catholic school."
"What about your mother?"
"She doesn't want to see me. The deputies are looking for me and this coach. I'm a criminal now."
"Lovino, they're your family."
He frowned, "Let's make this a quick trip through El Paso."
Natalya frowned as they fell into silence.
"I believe I've gotten one." Arthur said, pulling his stick up. With one tug the fish flopped up and onto his face.
Natalya watched as Lovino let out a snort. Arthur grabbed the fish before it flopped back into the water. It was a medium size fish, carp.
"You said you could gut this?" Arthur asked her.
Natalya nodded and took the fish from him. She put it in an empty sack.
About two hours later they now had four fish in the sack and Natalya started to gut them. They sat around the fire as she cut the fish, taking out the bones. She chopped off the heads and tails. After she sliced them up they skewed the pieces and cooked them over the fire.

The sun was setting and Lovino passed the job of driving the coach to her. He gave Natalya the same set of instructions he gave Arthur. A lantern was lit and hung above her head on a hook to illuminate the path ahead.
Natalya listened to the sounds of the night and hoped that they wouldn't be bothered by vampires or werewolves.
Just as her eyes felt heavy, after what seemed like a few hours passed, she saw a set of blue eyes right in the way of her path. Natalya pulled the reins, and yelled stop just as the lamp illuminated brown fur.
She heard growling, that only got louder, as she looked on each side she saw another three sets of blue eyes and a set of red eyes further back into the woods. They were surrounded by a pack of werewolves.
"Lovino!" She yelled banging on the coach from behind. Natalya kept her eyes on the werewolf in front, it's growling increased.
Her heart beat rapidly in her chest as she mentallly willed Lovino to come in haste.
Just then the doors on the sides of the coach opened and a shot rang out, hitting the werewolf in its front paw. It made a bark-like sound before stepping back.
Betsy neighed as Natalya whipped the reins, and yelled "Go!" before the werewolf could get back in the way of her path.
She heard more shots ring out into the air as she tried to keep the coach from tipping over on it's side. The rocky terrain wasn't helping. They were jostled around, and Natalya hoped that it wasn't affecting Lovino's aim. Betsy kept straight, and Natalya tightened her grip on the reins
Then she heard barking, and looked over to her side before coming face to face with rows of sharp teeth and the maw of werewolf. She gasped as she prepared for the oncoming bite, only to have the wolf knocked off of its path to her by something as equally covered in fur. Natalya was barely able to catch a glimpse of blond fur before the wolf was thrown onto the side of the road along with its assailant.
Natalya really wished they had wolfsbane at the moment.
They hit a pretty large rock, and were sent upwards for a few moments. When they came back down to the ground, Natalya couldn't get the coach to steady on its wheels. She pulled even as she felt the coach tipping over to the side.
"Natalya what the hell is going on up there?" Lovino shouted from his place still inside the coach.
"I can't get the coach steady!" She called back to him.
"Hold on!" He yelled. Shortly after she heard some rustling.
She looked up to see Lovino now on top of the coach, he was just over her.
And then suddenly there was a loud thump that sent them over the edge. Natalya felt the weight of the coach shift and soon her shoulder hit the ground below admits the neighs of Betsy.
Natalya was essentially fine aside from a few bruised ribs from being flung a few feet from the fallen coach. She got up quickly, although it hurt to breathe, to find Lovino.
He had been thrown farther from the coach than her. When she got to him, he was unconscious. Natalya tried to shake Lovino awake, "Get up!"
After a few moments he groaned, "Urgh." He said, and appeared to be dazed as he shook his head.
Natalya helped him up, "Any damages?"
"Just a pain in my head." He said, "You?"
"Bruised ribs."
"Let's try to right this coach." He said and they each grabbed one end.
Natalya grabbed hold of the edge of the coach and braced her boots on the soft grass. She felt her arms muscles clench and strain, it moved about an inch before it was suddenly very light and kept rising before it was upright. Her grip slipped and she let go.
"Are you both alright?" Natalya looked over, Arthur was now in between her and Lovino as he looked between them.
Right, that makes more sense.
"You're doing all the heavy lifting around here from now on Blondie." Lovino said, clutching his head, and shaking it a bit, before blinking.
"I think Lovino hit his head pretty hard. I think my ribs are bruised but I think we're fine."
Arthur nodded.
"Did you shoot all of the werewolves Lovino?" Natalya asked as Arthur went inside the coach.
"I wounded those sons of bitches." She couldn't see his expression in the dark.
"His aim was terrible. He got one in the paw, and missed several times." Arthur yelled from inside the coach.
"Hush now! You try shooting a gun at running werewolves while on a moving coach. I did damn good for my first time." Lovino yelled back at him.
"You did good, Lovino." Natalya nodded.
"Grazie, bella." Lovino gave her a smile before turning towards the direction of the coach. "See this is why I like you better as a dog!" Lovino said, yelling back at him.
Lovino went over and unhooked Betsy from her restraints, allowing her to get up. Natalya went inside the coach.
To which Arthur screamed, "Get out! I'm still dressing!" She could see his cheeks colored crimson in the moonlight.
"You weren't wearing clothes before! Get over yourself! We need to discuss our plan. How are we going to get Lovino into El Paso?"
"Will you at least close your eyes?"
Natalya let out a huff but did close her eyes. She then heard a bit of rustling.
"I need a mustache." Lovino said, "No one will recognize me then." He sounded close to her.
"You're going to need more than a mustache, you simpleton. Natalya, I'm going to need one of your dresses and your boots." Arthur said, now fully clothed again, as she opened her eyes.
A/N: I was going to make England a dog like a corgi or something and this story was going to be more of a comedy. But I looked up "Can dogs kill wolves?" And there was like one article that speculated a few breeds could possibly do it in the right conditions. So I ran with it instead.
Thank you for reading! Criticism welcome.
