Chapter 6: Abigail, John, and Walter The Betas

They left that clearing, determined to travel as much as they could during the day, they didn't want to be attacked while on the road to risk further injury. As night fell they made another camp and a fire. Betsy was laying down, sleeping. Lovino was on the ground next to Natalya and not far from the orange flames.

Natalya kept watch this time. Just as her eyes were drooping from tiredness. Natalya heard rustling in the bushes. Natalya stood up and readied her stakes.

A woman stepped out, her skin was darker than Lovino's, and her clothes looked worn. Her eyes were dark like mud, and her hair was wrapped in a red scarf. There weren't any Negros in Sraftbridge.

"Ya'll are going to have to go on. It's dangerous out here."

"We know. We're just passing through. We'll be out before dawn." Natalya didn't question where the woman had come from but something about this didn't sit right with her.

"No. Ya'll have to go now."

"Ma'am we'll be fine. I have a knife and my friend here has a rifle."

The woman shook her head, "You need to go, please Miss."

And then Natalya felt a weight on her shoulders, "You know they never listen to you Abigail." She looked back to see the red eyes and sharp fangs of a vampire.

Natalya made a swift turn to slash the vampire across the neck but he dodged her. Now he put quite a distance between them.

He smiled at her, skin pale and smooth in the moonlight, hair as dark as a raven. Natalya readied her stake and ran towards the vampire with the intent to stab it in the heart. He gripped her wrist in mid swing, and kicked her in the stomach. Natalya fell to the ground.

Once on her back the vampire had her pinned. Natalya struggled against him but he was too strong. He hissed before leaning down to bite her neck. Natalya screamed before she felt a little dizzy.

And suddenly he was pulled off of her by Abigail. "What are you doing? We have a deal!"

"No more, August! Come on, Miss!"

Natalya wasted no time scrambling up and preparing to stake the vampire in the heart. That was until August kicked her in the face.

August swung his elbow back right into Abigail's neck. She let go of him and August hissed before charging at her was until he was thrown off course by the weight of something else.

"What are y'all doing? These humans are your food!"

August was pinned down by a darker skinned man with short coarse raven colored hair, "We don't want your leftovers anymore, August!"

"Y'all coloreds are the same. Y'all don't know how to appreciate what's given to you."

Just then Lovino screamed, having woken up. That moment of distraction gave Natalya the right amount of time to crouch at the vampire's side and stab him in the heart. August screamed and withered around before turning into a pile of ashes.

"What is going on around here?" Lovino asked, Natalya turned to see he had his rifle pointed at Abigail.

Natalya had her knife out and against the Negro man's neck, a shot rang out. Natalya looked over to see Abigail holding her now bloody arm. "Agh!" She cried out.

"You hunters?" The man asked her. Fear present in his eyes.

"Are you werewolves?" She asked, and the man gulped in response.

"W-we don't want no trouble. W-we stopped working for August. But his gang, they're coming."

"Please don't hurt us." Abigail said, voice trembling.

Natalya made eye contact with Lovino. He raised an eyebrow and so did she.

"Is this gang pretty high up in the vampire monarchy?" Natalya asked.

The Negro man shook his head, "They've been disowned on a count of working with us."

"How many is there?" Lovino asked.

"I'd say 8." Abigail said, "We could take you out of harm's way, if you want."

"Abigail!" The man hissed.

"Maybe they'll spare us John!" Natalya nodded and they both lowered their weapons.

Natalya and Lovino followed the two werewolves. Lovino pulled Betsy along, but left the coach. They would come back for it later. Soon they came upon a small wooden cabin in the forest.

Abigail knocked on the door, and another Negro man opened it. He was wearing a pair of overalls that were patched at the knees. A flat cap covered his shaved head.

"You bring back our food?" He asked.

"Not quite." Abigail said.

The man blinked upon seeing herself and Lovino."What is this? An ambush?"

000000000

The Negro man at the door was named Walter. They had introduced themselves as well. Abigail explained the situation and they all sat around their wooden dinner table. It was next to a metal boiler.

"So what are you children doing out in the middle of the forest anyway?"

"They're hunters, Walter." Abigail said before going into another room briefly.

"Aren't y'all a bit young for that?" Walter asked, to which John hit him on the back of the head.

"Stop asking so many questions!" John said.

Abigail returned, having wrapped up her arm. "I'll fix y'all something, y'all hungry?" Abigail asked before going over to pull out canned vegetables.

"Yes ma'am." Lovino said.

"Wait. How do we know you aren't trying to poison us? You eat humans right?" Natalya spoke up.

"Nah we don't want to eat y'all. Someone could be lookin' for you children." Abigail said.

"That's why I asked, why they all the way out here!" Walter threw up his arms.

"We're looking for my brother Ivan. They said he might be with the Vampire King but we don't know where he is. Only a pack of all alphas know."

"Ivan? Like that vampire hunter?"

"You know him?"

"Yeah! He and his gang almost killed us. They wanted to know about this werewolf pack with two alphas."

"That's what it says in his journal. We are trying to find them."

Walter shook his head, "They're probably already dead."

"What?"

"If he was going to kill us, why would he spare them?"

"Well we're still going. Unless you know where the alphas are."

John shook his head, "They disowned us. We don't know where they are."

Natalya frowned.

"Can't you just ask a vampire?" Walter asked.

"When should we ask, before or after they suck our blood?" Lovino said with a roll of his eyes.

"Right, right."

"I think I heard there's some vampires that don't suck human blood. They only do animals." John spoke up.

"Where'd you hear that?" Walter turned to look at John.

"Someone in August's gang mentioned something."

"You were eavesdropping?"

"I just wanted to know if they were planning something." John shrugged, "You can't be too careful."

"Do you know where we could find one?" Natalya asked.

"Yes! I saw a Vampire up the river making small traps for animals. I thought it was strange."

"That's what we need! What are the directions?"

"I could just take you myself. I want to ask him some questions."

"You get to ask him questions but not me?" Walter asked.

"You're just all in people's business!" John said.

"Fine." Natalya nodded and she looked over to Lovino who nodded as well.

After Natalya and Lovino ate the corn Abigail warmed up in a pot. They were given some blankets so they could sleep on the floor of Abigail's room. The betas would keep watch for any sign of vampires.

Natalya was sleeping peacefully until she was awoken by a loud thump and the heat of orange flames. Natalya blinked her eyes open, Lovino was beside her still asleep but smoke had risen above them in a thick black cloud.

Natalya coughed and looked towards the entryway. There Abigail appeared.

"Children, they're trying to burn us and draw us out! Walter and John are out there now trying to fight 'em off. But they brought torches."

Natalya got up and shook Lovino, he groaned and screamed upon seeing the smoke. Natalya covered his mouth, "Don't try to breathe too much." She hissed.

"We'll go out the back but be prepared if you see some. We'll get y'all back to your wagon."

Natalya nodded. She readied her stakes. Lovino grabbed his rifle.

Once they reached the door, Natalya felt unstable on her feet, the smoke growing thicker as the wooden house continued to burn. She coughed and so did Lovino. When Abigail opened the door they were greeted by three vampires. They hissed and Natlya's vision started to blur. She shook her head.

Natalya started running but she stumbled and fell. "Come on, get up Miss Natalya!" Natalya heard Abigail say before she looked up to see the red eyes and fangs of a vampire. Natalya heard screams coming from her companion before she felt a grip on her leg. Then she was being pulled backwards, just evading the vampire's grasp as she was pulled towards the tree line. Abigail had then tackled the vampire to ground. Natalya felt the grip on her leg lessen and she made the motion to get up.

"Spasibo, Lovino."

"You scared me there, falling down like that!"

Natalya dug into her pocket and pulled out a few stakes and handed him one, "Protect yourself."

Lovino grabbed the stake and gripped his rifle even tighter before he gave her a nod, "I-I'll stay back here."

Natalya glanced back at the wooden cabin being consumed with orange flames.

She wished that there was something she could do about the fire. Abigail was being kicked by two vampires with red eyes and dark brown hair. One was what could be considered a female and the other was male. Natalya ran over and aimed to kick the male in the ribs.

The male vampire stumbled back before hissing, "This doesn't involve you human. I'd stay back before you get killed."

"It does involve me. I killed your precious leader."

"Well then this'll be easier than I thought, " To which he let out a breathy laugh. He had brown bangs and hair that stopped just above his shoulders

Natalya brought out her stake and she was going to stab him in the heart before he caught her wrist and tossed her to the ground.

She rolled away as he tried to pounce on her, in order to pin her down. Natalya got back up and tried to stab him again but when she got close he uppercut her in the jaw and punched her right in the ribs.

Natalya shook her head to clear the pounding in her head. She felt a grip onto her arm and saw the world spin upside down, the smell of burning wood not too far behind. She felt her feet being lifted off the ground before she came crashing back down onto the hard dusty desert soil. She could see the half moon and the stars above briefly as the air had been pushed from her lungs, and she felt like she couldn't breathe.

The vampire appeared above her before it seemed as though Abigail had bitten his neck hard enough to draw some black liquid from the wound. The vampire screeched a horrible ear piercing sound. Natalya was able to regain her bearings and get back up. She stabbed the vampire in the heart, reducing it to ashes.

Abigail wiped her lips from the strange black liquid, her eyes glowing blue before they dimmed and changed back to their dark color, she couldn't see in the moonlight.

John and Walter appeared from the other side of the house, their eyes glowing the same color of blue as well. She could see from the glow of the flames that their hands were covered in the same black liquid that she was going to name vampire blood. Lovino came not far behind, there was vampire blood on his cheek as though it had splashed on him and some even on the butt of his rifle.

"Is that all of them?" John asked.

"I think so." Abigail said.

"What are we gonna do about the house?" Walter asked.

"There's no saving it. We're just going to have to wait till it dies out and use the water pump to stop it from spreading to the forest." John said, shaking his head.

So, Lovino and Natalya went back to the wagon to grab a few empty cans to fill up from the river.

After a few hours, it was a bit past dawn and the fire had burned out. They managed to stop it from spreading to the forest but nothing in the house was salvageable. The structure had completely burned down to rubble.

"Well children, we wish you luck. And John, ask that vampire if he knows a good place to get a boiler." Abigail said and Walter gave them a wave. Presumably they were going to have to rebuild their home from the trees in the area.

So John told Natalya the directions to the amber-eyed vampire's home. He slept in the coach and Lovino sat in front with her as she was driving. Betsy had managed to sleep through them trying to put out the fire so she was well rested for today.

"Do you think this vampire is going to help us?" Lovino asked her.

She shrugged, "I'm sure we could offer to catch animals for him in exchange."

"But wouldn't that be betraying his own kind?"

"I don't know how many vampires choose to eat animals only, but I'm thinking it's not that many. He won't have a problem if we bargain with him."

Lovino pursed his lips, "Yes, we don't have many options otherwise."

They had settled into silence for a few moments.

"So how'd you get that black liquid on your face?"

"What? Disgusting! It got on me!" She glanced over to see him frantically wiping his cheeks with his hands. "Stupid vampires, I was just minding my own damn business and they decided I looked like a good juicy Italian steak or something. And then John came over, scratching the vampire across the chest to pull him off of me. Some must have dripped onto my face as I used the stake you gave me to stab him in the heart." She looked back at him again to see that he looked down at himself, "Got ashes on my damn clothes too!"

"You did good. See, I told you we don't need Arthur. We're doing fine on our own."

"If we run into Blondie again, I'm rubbing it in his damn face."

"As you should." Natalya nodded.

0000000

The sun was high in the sky when Natalya willed the coach to stop in front of a small wooden cabin. The drapes were drawn and an Anatolian Shepherd with golden fur started barking at them. The dog looked familiar to her but she thought that would have been too much of a coincidence.

"Blondie?" Lovino hopped off of the coach and approached the dog. The barks quickly turned to growls as Lovino got closer.

"Lovino, don't get too close! I think that's just a regular dog."

Lovino stopped a distance away, presumably having headed her warning. Lovino crossed his arms. Natalya started to approach.

"How are we going to knock on the vampire's door now?" Lovino asked, she was now standing beside him. The dog's green eyes shifted to her briefly; its growls even louder; its sharp teeth visible.

"Is there a problem?"

Natalya turned to see John stepping out of the coach. "This Anatolian shepherd is guarding the door and it sees us as threats," she said.

Natalya noticed that John dropped the "-er" pronunciations of words and replaced them with soft "-uh," sounds: "Hmm, he's a big fella…but I think my powers (POW- uhs) will work on any dog breed."

Natalya was suddenly interested. She hadn't read as much about werewolves as she had vampires. Although, it seemed she would have to read more to find out the true name of "vampire blood" anyway.

Lovino was still eyeing the dog.

John's eyes glowed blue and he growled. When the dog made eye contact with him, it backed away and stopped it's growling. Its expression was submissive as it backed further towards the edge of the treeline. The dog made a few whines before it settled down away from them.

"That is pretty useful," she said to him.

"It can be when catching hum–uh prey."John looked at her then.

Natalya frowned as John scratched the back of his head. He gave her an anxious smile.

"Alright, enough standing around let's talk to this vampire." Lovino said, stalking up to the door and knocking on it.

The wooden door opened albeit slowly to reveal a pale vampire with the beginnings of a beard and amber eyes. He was wrapped up in a black hooded cloak.

"Who are you people? Did you not see the–? Where is my dog?" The vampire had what she would call a French accent. He looked around just outside the door.

"He's still around, just by the tree line; I promise you sir. I'm John Thomas, I live just down the road. These two children and I would like to speak with you about your diet of only animal blood."

"Ah, it is nice to meet you John. You usually work with the Millers clan, non?"

"Yes, my siblings and I used to."

"Well you all can come in. I would like to get out of the sun." The vampire let out a chuckle.

"Oh right, right."

They went into what could be described as the living room of the vampire's home. It was decorated with various lavish accessories and furniture. A grand fireplace, a velvet couch and armchair in the foyer. And wooden end tables with doilies and a glass vase sat on a table in front of the couch filled with devil's trumpets.

The three of them sat on the couch and the vampire, in the armchair. The vampire took off his cloak revealing wavy blond curls. Natalya was just slightly envious of the vampire's magnificent hair, flawless skin, defined jaw and acute pointed nose.

"Welcome, I am Francis Bonnefoy. And who might you two young ones be?"

"I am Natalya Braginsky and this is Lovino Vargas." Natalya got up and curtseyed before she gestured to Lovino, "We're here to ask you a few questions about the Vampire King."

"Braginsky? As in, you're related to Ivan?"

"Yes. You know about him?"

"How could I not? The man does not take kindly to vampires. He is known to be searching for the Vampire King. We were told to be on the lookout for him."

"We can discuss it further, later, John has to be on his way."

"Sorry to interrupt, I just wanted to ask about your diet. Is it possible to sustain off of just animals?"

"Oh oui, it is a bit more work than just drinking human blood. The animals I catch are small, so I have to catch a lot. I set up traps but sometimes they evade them. It helps to have a dog around, you know? They're good for tracking."

"Hmm, you ever tried for something bigger?"

"I just believe it would be more work because it is just me. All the other vampires drink human blood, stuck in their old ways...They can't see how nice it would be if we got along." Francis said albeit almost downtrodden.

"I'll think about it as an option, Mister Bonnefoy. Also, my sister asked if you knew where to get a boiler. We kind of had a fight with the Millers and they burned down our cabin." John rang his hands together.

"Ahh…I haven't gotten a new boiler in a long time, maybe even before I was turned. I believe there's a shop in El Paso called "The Dapper Chimney" but I do not think they sell to uh…" Francis waved his hand around as to fill the silence

"Oh no we don't have any money anyway. I was planning to steal one."

Francis clapped, a smile on his face, "Bon then there is nothing to worry about!"

John made a motion to get up, "It was nice meeting you Mister Bonnefoy. We're just down the road if you need anything." He bowed before going towards the door.

"Également!" Francis said, covering himself with his cloak as John opened the door. He moved to get up, "Pardon, I want to bring him in before he gets too far."

Francis went to the door and whistled loud before he yelled, "Arthur the man isn't here anymore! Come in!"

It has to be a coincidence.

"So it is that ass after all! How dare he!" Lovino said, standing up just as the dog entered the door.

Francis closed the door and pulled down the hood on his cloak.

"You left us to catch animals for a vampire? Are you doing him a favor in exchange for information?" Lovino said and the dog cocked its head to the side as though it didn't understand.

"You know Arthur? It is about time he found friends his age, non? I was worried he was doomed to live life alone." Francis said, a grin on his lips.

Natalya furrowed her eyebrows, none of this made any sense to her.
