Chapter 10: The Vampire King's Play

Natalya, Lovino and Ivan were ultimately escorted with Mary Ann to Ivan's "special cell" which was just a wooden chair with metal cuffs attached at the wrists and ankles. It was in the front row of a large room with a stage and seats for an audience. The other wooden seats were attached and Natalya noticed there was a balcony above.

Mary Ann snapped Ivan into his restraints.

"So where did you take the weredog?" Lovino asked.

Mary Ann gasped before she grinned, "Oh he has special seating, right next to the King. But don't you worry Mister, as a treat you get to watch the performance they're putting on."

Natalya noticed the keys to Arthur's cuffs in her pocket.

"Do I get to sit next to him?"

"Hmm? No, you get to sit in the front row. Only his Majesty's closest advisors get to sit next to him."

Natalya reached over to grab the keys but Mary Ann addressed her so she pulled her hand back.

"I've never seen you around before."

Natalya pulled her hat further over her eyes.

"He's with me!" Lovino spoke up.

"You had another vampire with you? Where was he hiding? I put your coach away myself and I didn't see no one. Can you turn invisible or somethin'?"

"I-Invisibility, yeah. He sometimes catches me off guard too." Lovino said.

"Oh that explains it." Mary Ann grinned, "Well you can take a seat. The performance should be starting in about an hour." Mary Ann twirled the keys around her finger before she exited the room.

"Now what do we do?" Lovino hissed.

"We'll just wait until they bring him out and sneak up to the balcony during the play." Natalya said, taking a seat next to her brother. She heard a slight squeak as Lovino took his place next to her.

"Did that vampire say you brought a weredog with you?" Ivan spoke up then and Natalya turned to him.

"Oh yes. You know Mister Kirkland, the banker?"

Ivan nodded.

"Well his son, Arthur, was traveling with us. That vampire has the keys to his cuffs. Do you know why they want him?"

Ivan narrowed his eyes.

"You said you wanted to know how Antonio was killed."

Natalya turned to Lovino who nodded.

"That fucking weredog brother of his killed him. Ripped him to shreds as though he were meat."

Lovino gasped.

"That can't be true, Big Brother! The weredogs are supposed to protect humans!" Natalya felt a bit of panic in her chest.

"I saw it with my own eyes! They're beasts just like the werewolves! I was a fool to think there was any difference."

"But Big Brother Arthur would never–!"

"Hark little sister!"

Natalya clamped her mouth shut, she felt her ears burn with shame.

"Even if his bastard of a brother killed Antonio, we can't just leave Arthur behind." Lovino spoke up.

"You are a fool if you think letting that beast come with us won't end in you befalling the same fate."

"That may be so Mister Braginsky, but I never leave my friends behind."

Natalya was conflicted but knew they wouldn't be able to get out of there without Arthur's help. Ivan was in a weakened state and she didn't know how much of Arthur's power Lovino had left.

Ivan sighed, slumping down in his chair, "I try to warn you but nobody listens to me."

0000000

Lovino was sent for, just like Arthur had been. He would be in front of the Vampire King.

"What did he say?" Natalya asked after he returned.

"He said that I had helped them move their plan forward. He would discuss the details after the play and for me to enjoy the performance."

"That is vague and of no help."

"Tell me about it. He looked haughty in whatever he had planned."

The play was about to start, signaled by all of the vampires standing, and the announcement of the Vampire King's arrival.

Natalya noticed they ushered Arthur in just behind who she could assume was the Vampire King. He had an air about him that made Natlaya recognize that he was a competent leader with confidence in his abilities although his face was youthful. He looked to be the same age as Arthur, having seen them together.

The man had a round pair of glasses perched on his nose, pale skin and red eyes as the other vampires did. His cape was blood red, and he even wore a crown. His blonde hair was darker than Arthur's and they were about the same height.

Natalya wondered how they took someone so young looking, so seriously. Two other vampires followed, one who looked even younger and smaller than the Vampire King and her earlier pondering was squashed.

He sat down before telling them all that they could be seated.

Natalya was given a pamphlet that had the title, cast, and a summary of the production on it. She didn't pay any attention to the descriptions for the "actors." They were just some vampires that didn't matter.

The Vampire Hunter's Capture

A very unoriginal title in her opinion. She recognized the character list as some of the people from Ivan's journal.

Characters and Cast

Ivan ….. Thomas

Harvey….Johnathan

Clyde…..Gabriel

Antonio…..Edward

Connor…..George

Werewolf 1 …..Theodore

Werewolf 2…...Victor

Werewolf 3….Anna Belle

Werewolf 4..….Juan

Werewolf 5….Luis

And that's when it clicked for her. This play was about the night Ivan was captured, and when Antonio and Conner were killed. Why would they want Arthur specifically to see the events unfolded in this way?

It was always possible they were going to twist the story for their own advantage, would they leave out the part about Conner killing Antonio?

Whatever they were planning, couldn't be good and they couldn't stay.

"Lovino." Natalya whispered.

The brunet turned to her, "This is–"

"I know. We have to get out of here, we can't let Arthur watch this play."

"Why not? He wanted to know what happened to his brother. He can see the stupid werewolves who killed him."

"Don't you think the vampires are going to twist the story? What about Connor killing Antonio, does he need to see that?"

"Why not? It won't hurt to stay a little while and see how this plays out. You're brother's here and Arthur's on the balcony so there's no immediate need." Lovino shrugged.

Natalya frowned, "Big brother, what do you think we should do?"

Ivan shrugged, "We should have left before. You wanted to wait. You are on your own if you want that beast to come with us."

Natalya grit her teeth, but was also curious as to how the vampires saw this particular event. She wanted to know their plan, so she'd stay put for now but somewhere in the middle she would get up, while they were engrossed and find Mary Ann to get the keys to Arthur's cuffs.

The thick velvet curtains were closed on stage and then a caped vampire with red eyes and curly ginger hair entered.

"We've been practicing this performance for weeks now. As you all know, his majesty's talented second in command Tolys, wrote our script, based on true events about the capture of our longtime rival Ivan 'The Vampire Hunter' Braginsky" The vampire frowned and said albeit dryly, "He's also in the audience." Natalya squinted her eyes as a spotlight shone down on Ivan which elicited boos from the surrounding vampires.

"This is the first time we'll be performing in front of his majesty and the weredog he wanted to find. We hope you all enjoy." The vampire then walked off stage.

From that introduction, this plan was a bit of a mystery to all of the other vampires what exactly the Vampire King wanted with Arthur.

The already dimly lit room was put in complete darkness and the stage was illuminated instead. Then the red velvet curtains parted.

The setting seemed to be a forest clearing, with the backdrop being decorated to look like trees. A pale vampire with red eyes, a platinum wig, brown pants, suede mercer boots, and a fur coat was sitting on a log next to a campfire. The campfire looked to be made out of cardboard. She could assume this vampire was supposed to be Ivan. On stage Ivan' s pipe was resting across his lap. On an adjacent log was a shorter vampire with raven hair, wearing brown pants and a white button-up with suede mercer boots.

Two vampires wearing suspenders, white shirts, gray pants, and flat caps were laying down in front of the campfire. One of them seemed to be wearing something that seemed like dirt on his face or darker makeup and was wearing stovepipe boots that almost came to his knees.

A distance away from them was a cardboard cutout of a wagon and a mannequin of a horse.

"We're running out of supplies. Where did you say we could take a job, Clyde?" "Ivan" asked.

The raven haired vampire was portraying Clyde, "Oh, a pastor in El Paso said he wanted to demonstrate his power to expel demons. So we've got to kill a vampire he caught to make it seem like his praying did it. Just like last time."

And then some rustling sounds occur causing the two performers to look to their right off stage.

Then three actors entered wearing fur coats and nothing else, as Natalya could see their bare legs, feet and hands. She could assume they were supposed to be the werewolves.

One of the werewolves attacked Clyde and knocked him down. The other "Ivan" held back with his pipe.

Another werewolf bit the sleeping vampire that wasn't wearing dark make-up. This caused the vampire to scream and the other to wake up. The one with dark make-up yelled "Harvey" and goes to the cardboard wagon. A vampire in all black handed him a rifle.

Harvey was screaming and blood was thrown on him from another vampire in all black, she could assume they are a part of the stage crew.

A bang echoed in the theater.

The Third Werewolf separated from Harvey and Harvey crawled away still covered in blood but now holding his arm.

Cyde was still being attacked by the Second Werewolf.

"Ivan" was now hitting the first werewolf he was fighting against with his pipe, "Back! Back you cretin!"

Antonio, who she now figured out was the one in the dark make-up, was tackled by the Third Werewolf that had first attacked Harvey.

And then a vampire with a mop of red hair enters wearing a fur coat that seemed to be made of fox fur appeared to knock the Second werewolf from Clyde. Natalya assumed that this was supposed to be Connor.

The First Werewolf "Ivan" was beating lays still and another vampire in all black runs out to throw blood on it.

Clyde got up and said, "Thank you." She assumed he was talking to Connor. Connor got thrown back from the Second Werewolf and it went after Cylde again. Clyde exited the stage screaming.

Harvey followed with a torch, yelling "Clyde! Wait Clyde!"

Ivan went over to Antonio and tried to get the Third Werewolf off of him.

A Fourth Werewolf entered on the stage and knocked Ivan down, causing him to drop his pipe. Antonio hit the Third Werewolf in the nose. Connor knocked Third Werewolf down. Antonio aimed his rifle at Third Werewolf but Harvey entered holding a bloodied Clyde.

"Antonio! A wolf's behind us! I just managed to get him away from Clyde but he's not doing so good!" Harvey said.

Another bang echoed in the theater and Fourth Werewolf separated from "Ivan."

"Harvey, get Clyde to the wagon and prepare to take him into town. Ivan and I will keep them from you." Antonio said as Ivan got up, holding his pipe again.

Second Werewolf entered again and charged for Harvey and Clyde but Antonio shot it down.

"Ve!" Antonio yelled.

Harvey carried Clyde to the wagon. "Ivan" hits the Fourth Werewolf with his pipe. The Third Werewolf threw Connor into a tree nearby Antonio. They had been across the stage.

Antonio checked his rifle before a Fifth Werewolf entered and went toward Harvey and Clyde but Antonio shot it down.

Third Werewolf ran toward Connor but Antonio threw his rifle to knock it off course. Third Werewolf changed direction to Antonio instead and bit his arm. Then it dragged Antonio off stage as he screamed.

Second Werewolf was going to get to Harvey after he finished putting Clyde in the wagon, a vampire in all black took Clyde, but "Ivan" swung the pipe into the werewolf's neck.

Connor's coat was taken off of him before he got back up and exited the stage to go in the same direction as the werewolf and Antonio.

Fourth Werewolf lunged at "Ivan" as Harvey got on top of the fake horse.

"Come on Ivan!" Harvey said.

"I'm not leaving without Antonio!" He hit the werewolf so hard in the muzzle it stumbled back from him.

"There are too many!"

"Just wait!" "Ivan" said before he exited the stage.

Harvey whips the rings of the wagon as horse neighs sound and the Fourth Werewolf gets back up and seems to be right behind the wagon.

The lights on stage darkened, indicating that the scene was changing. Natalya decided she should try to find the keys to Arthur's cuffs.

0000000

Natalya made her way towards the exit of the room where they had previously entered before the play started. The next scene was beginning and Natalya didn't know how much time she had before the play ended. She was looking around for Mary Ann.

"Hey!" Nayalya was surprised at her luck as the vampire was just emerging from another hallway.

"You're Barginsky's sister!" Mary Ann announced as she advanced toward her.

Natalya pulled out a stake that she'd taken from her dress before giving it to Richard.

"Come on, you're going to be eaten after this scene. The play is almost over, and they sent me to get you."

Natalya went to stab the vampire in the heart but she dodged. "You're full of surprises! You pulled one over on Richard too huh?" The vampire raised an eyebrow, her expression seemed to be one of intrigue.

Natalya went to stab her again but she grabbed Natalya's wrist.

"Come on, enough of this. Let's get back inside." Mary Ann said, lips pursed

Natalya was able to stomp hard on the vampire's foot, causing the vampire to hiss and let her go.

Natalya grabbed hold of the keys in her pocket.

Natalya was going to go toward the entryway to the performance room but was halted by a grip on her cape.

Natlaya was pulled back and thrown to the ground. She cradled the keys as she landed on her back.

The vampire jumped on her but Natalya managed to roll just out of her grasp. Nataya got up just as Mary Ann did.

Natalya made her way towards the entryway only to bump into the smaller and younger vampire that was close to the king.

"A-apologies." he said with a nod, before his gaze landed on Mary Ann behind him.

"Mary Ann, I need the keys. The performance is almost over."

"That's the Braginsky girl! She has my keys!"

Natalya shouldered past and made her way to the balcony.

"Ivan stop! Please!" She heard on stage. She could only assume that this was Connor's actor as she'd never heard him talk before.

She ran up the stairs, hearing the loud grunts, and screams from the stage. Screams that came from Connor's actor and grunts that came from Ivan's actor before the screams stopped suddenly.

Natalya tried to catch her breath as she made eye contact with a red eyed vampire.

"You're not Ravis." She could make out his darker colored hair, as he moved to stand, he almost towered over her.

Another set of eyes, that was seated beside him, green, she noticed.

"Arthur!" She ran past the vampire and knelt down beside him to unlock the magical cuffs.

"Natalya? Did you find your brother?"

"Da! He is sitting below! Are you alright?"

There was a loud thump and Natalya turned towards the stage to see Ivan's actor collapse. Connor was covered in what was supposed to be blood, Antonio's actor was also covered in blood and still.

The curtains closed and the theater was dimly lit again. The room erupted into applause.

Natalya turned back to see Arthur's expression as she held his arm to unlock the cuffs. She still hadn't done it by the way. His expression was unreadable to her.

"You know those vampires will say anything. How true could that be?" She said as she unlocked his magical cuffs. She grabbed them and threw them aside.

Arthur snapped the cuffs that Lovino had put on him just as the curtain reopened. On stage was the Vampire King.

"I hope you enjoyed our performance, Mister Kirkland. You said you were looking for your brother's killer and he is but the one and only Ivan The Vampire Hunter." The Vampire King let out a little snicker.

Natalya felt as though her heart dropped into her stomach. And suddenly a spotlight was shown on where Ivan was below in the audience.

"Do you see? Do you see how useless it is to protect these Humans? They will never have your best interests in mind. They will cast you aside once they know you are something special, something more."

Natalya turned to see Arthur's eyes were still glowing green and his eyebrows furrowed. She couldn't move, she couldn't take in a breath. All she could do was watch.

"I invite you to take revenge on the one who caused you harm."

Natalya felt her heart beat in her chest, so fast and loud it was almost as if she could hear it in her throat.

And before she could stop him, he stood up and rushed over to the edge of the balcony.

Natalya ran after him, running as fast as her legs could carry her to that short distance. A scream ripped through her throat as she was so close to stopping him from jumping off the balcony. "Arthur don't!"

The vampires cheered as he landed and made his way towards Ivan.

"Please!" Natalya screamed, as she felt tears burn the inside of her eyes. She gripped the balcony's edge.

Lovino was going to stop him but he just evdaded him.

Natalya made her way toward the stairs. The red eyed vampire moved out of her way. He watched her with a pointed gaze. The vampires continued to cheer.

Natalya felt a pounding in her head. He can't kill Ivan! He just can't!

Just ahead Arthur picked up Ivan and made his way to the exit of the performance room.

Huh?

Lovino was not far behind. Natalya decided to follow them, still confused.

Natalya was much slower than her male companions. "Hey! Wait! What the devil is going on?" She yelled.

Lovino turned back and slowed down to ultimately lift her up into his arms.

"I have no idea. I thought Blondie was gonna kill your brother because of the play. I was surprised Ivan was the one who killed Connor, who would have thought?"

"Lovino, I was thinking the same." Natalya knew that Ivan killed Connor. She knew how Ivan was, his tendency to pick violence over conversation when he was faced with what he perceived as an injustice.

Soon they were just outside the Vampire King's Castle.

"Lovino, where is the coach?" Arthur asked, having stopped, still holding Ivan.

Lovino said, "How the hell should I know?" Then he set her down. "That vampire took it somewhere."

"You didn't ask?"

"I didn't have time for that! They wouldn't tell me where they kept you." Lovino crossed his arms, mouth in a disgruntled frown.

Arthur sighed, " Well I suppose–"

"Are you planning to kill me or just continue to keep me trapped?" Ivan spoke up.

"Oh, right." He said before slamming the chair down into the ground.

Natalya gasped and Lovino jumped, startled. The chair, being made out of wood, split and fell apart. Stray wood pieces flew in different directions. Ivan fell back onto the pile of wood that used to be the chair, shocked himself, but otherwise unharmed and now free as the cuffs broke off along with the chair.

"Y-you're not going to kill him?" Lovino asked. Natalya went over to help her brother up.

Arthur furrowed his eyebrows before he frowned, "As if I would believe any of what those vampires said."

"Yes, they tend to keep out important details." Ivan said, narrowing his eyes.

And just then the vampires of the Watson clan started to approach the entryway to the castle. They were going to be surrounded.

"Natalya, you're going to have to teleport us to the coach." Arthur said, making eye contact with her.

Natalya pursed her lips and gave him a nod.

"What?" Ivan said.

"Do you know how to do that? Did I miss something?" Lovino asked.

Natalya closed her eyes as she heard the approaching footsteps of the Watsons.

"Is this a bad time to say that I don't have your powers anymore, Blondie. So I'm back to being scared."

"Lovino, yes this is a terrible time for that."

Natalya felt her heart beating and the open space around them. They were on the edge of the forest, the cool night air brushed against her cheek. The hissing grew louder.

"Obliictus Noctortia!" She yelled. She willed a portal to open, feeling the energy of the Watson's clan growing closer with each second gone by.

She envisioned them in the coach, the dark cramped space. The moonlight filtering through the window. The air warm and constricting from all of them in the tight space, and being pushed against the belongings Arthur, herself and Lovino carried. The neighs of Betsy in surprise at their combined weight.

Natalya opened her eyes, only to be pressed against the door of the coach by something warm. She couldn't see anything, only felt breath on the back of her neck.

"Ahhhhh!" Lovino screamed.

"We're not in danger anymore. You can stop screaming Lovi." She heard Ivan's voice but wasn't sure if he was the one behind her or not.

"Oh, is that you, Mister Braginsky?" Lovino said.

Natalya felt around for the handle to open the coach.

"Oh for heaven's sake!" Arthur said.

Natalya was shocked to feel something in between the crook of her arm and the door was opened.

She almost fell onto the ground but was caught around the waist and straightened back up.

"It seems like we're in some kind of wooden barn." Arthur said, before moving past her.

Betsy neighed.

Natalya felt around blindly to step out of the coach. Something bumped against her, "Is that you little sister?"

"Big brother!" Natalya turned and felt that Ivan was next to her.

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! Creeeek!

And then they were exposed to the light of the moon. The doors to the barn had been opened by Arthur she could assume.

"Lovino, do you think you can get us out of here?" He asked.

"Of course I can." Lovino stepped out of the coach and hopped up onto the seat.

Natalya and Ivan got back in the coach.

Natalya heard Lovino whip the reins before saying "Go!"

Ivan looked around before picking up Lovino's rifle. Ivan, pursed his lips in a small smile, "Hmph. Antonio's rifle." He sat back down and shook his head

Natalya sat across from him as the trees went past them in a blur. The vampires didn't seem to be following them.

"Big brother, what are you going to do now? The Vampire King is still alive."

"I know. I can't do anything until we get back into town. I need allies."

"I'll come with you Big brother!"

"Niet. Irunya needs the help so you will stay with her."

"But Big brother–!"

"I will not hear any objections." Ivan shook his head.

Natalya frowned and crossed her arms. She would not go back to competency.

000000

It was nightfall. They had been traveling for two days at this point. Ivan had told her to keep watch with Arthur because he didn't trust the other blond. Natalya had actually stayed up when it was Ivan and Lovino's shift because she was nervous Ivan would try to kill Arthur in his sleep. She had put wolfsbane around their campsite area, but luckily they hadn't seen any werewolves so far.

Now she was tired, and she realized that maybe she was being a bit irrational because Lovino would have said something if Ivan had tried to kill Arthur. Natalya wasn't sure if Lovino said anything about Ivan killing Connor to Arthur, but knowing the Italian he probably said it in passing.

If Arthur knew that fact, he hadn't said anything.

Natalya glanced at the blond, illuminated by the moonlight, his gaze ahead at the forest. He looked serene, the first time he wasn't frowning.

She wondered what his was thinking.

He caught her gaze, because she forgot to look away, and furrowed his eyebrows. "What?"

Natalya pursed her lips, "I-I don't think we should see each other after this is over." It was for the best, Ivan's blatant dislike of weredogs and by extension Arthur made things complicated.

"I should have known that you would discard me as though I were a worn tool." He frowned.

"I thought you would have been relieved. You said you didn't trust me."

"I still don't know who killed my brother, and your brother seems to dislike me for some reason, so I was hoping that maybe you…" she could see the salmon coloring of his cheeks.

Natalya felt her stomach twist in knots at the guilt. "You wanted me to come with you?"

"On the assumption you'd asked your brother about Connor and Lovino was willing to come with as well." Arthur's gaze was away from her then and towards the stars above, "but now that you've said that, at the very least do you know who killed Connor?"

He turned to look at her then. His green eyes held desperation, and her heart felt like it was being squeezed in her chest.

Natalya reached for his hands, catching the blond off guard, "W-what are you–?" His cheeks were salmon pink again.

She gripped them as tight as she could, and held his gaze, "Yes."

A/N: The Vampire King is Estonia and his right hand men are the other Baltics.

Also I wrote a script for the play that the vampires put on but FFN doesn't let you write in script format so its on the AO3 version of the story. There's a little bit more info than what I wrote describing the play but it doesn't affect the story.

Thank you for reading! Criticism Welcome.
