A DREADFUL TRUTH

It was the middle of august. Alex had already packed all her things for the new year at Hogwarts. As usual, she had been writing letters to her friends. The one who wrote her the most was Fred. Apparently, the Weasley's had went to Egypt. His father had won the Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw, so they decided to go to Egypt for a whole month and visit both Bill and the country. He would write to her every week, telling her what they had done or visited. He even sent her a picture of the whole family. Alex felt really close to Fred. He was like an older brother to her. Always taking care of her and making her laugh. He was the best. Draco, of course, didn't like that Alex had become such friends with one of the Weasley's. Especially Fred. There was something about him that Draco didn't like, but Alex couldn't say what it was.

It was Sunday, mail day, and Alex woke up early to see if she had a letter and to have breakfast. It had been a couple months since Lucius freed Dobby, the house elf. Well, according to Lucius, Harry had freed him. So now, it was up to Alex to pick up anything Dobby used to do. She didn't mind it, except when it was Lucius the one who "asked" her to do things. However, she picked up the mail. For some reason, the newspaper hadn't arrived yet, so Alex grabbed the mail and place it on the table, where she sat to have breakfast. Suddenly, she saw her name in one of the letters. "Uncle Remus". She smiled at herself and opened the letter.

"My dear Alex. I hope your summer is going great. I'm writing you to give you some amazing news. If the Malfoys are around, try to not jump from happiness, you may disturb their inner peace or something…Ready? Well. May I present you…your new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher…Me."

The moment she read that Alex almost choked on her waffle. She was going to be with Remus for a whole year. That was amazing. It had been so long since they shared more than a couple minutes together. And he was going to be her teacher. She couldn't believe it.

"I hope you're glad about it. I couldn't be happier. Of course, you need to know that I won't have a special treat for you as a teacher. I expect you to give the best of yourself in my class, young lady. I can't wait to see you. Love you, Alex. Your uncle Remus."

Just as she finished reading the letter, all of the Malfoys showed up at the living room. Draco sat next to her and gave her a kiss on the forehead as he picked an apple for breakfast.

- Early bird, aren't you? – he smiled at her as he bit the apple.

- I'm nervous. Can't wait to go back to Hogwarts. – she looked at Narcissa and Lucius. – Good morning.

- Good morning, sweetheart. – Narcissa smiled at her as she sat in front of her. Lucius, on the other hand, didn't even bother to look at her. He sat down, grabbed the mail and then looked around, like he was looking for something. Then, he looked at Alex.

- Don't you think there's something missing, Alexa?

- The newspaper, I know. It hadn't arrived when I picked up the mail.

- So? – he looked at her, defiance in his eyes. – Go and see if it has arrived.

- I'll go after I finish breakfast, if you don't mind. – she took another bite at her waffle while she looked at him in the eyes. Tension was building up.

- I'll go. – Draco got up when Lucius punched the table, making him stay in place.

- Sit. Down. Draco. I asked Alexa, not you. – he looked once again at her, a dangerous look on his face this time. Alex dropped her waffle and got up.

- Of course… - she left the living room. – Asshole…

She was having a splendid morning, but Lucius had to ruined it, like he always did. She walked out of the manor, and there it was. The newspaper. She picked it up and was about to head inside with it, when suddenly, something caught her eye. The headlines read "BLACK ESCAPES FROM AZKABAN". Her heart stopped. "But he's gone". That's what Remus said when he told her the truth. She understood that he had died. So, what the hell was that headline. She unfolded the newspaper. A picture of a man was in the middle. In his Azkaban uniform, dirty and looking at the camera. She recognized him from the photo album that Remus gave her two years ago. "But he's gone…". She was in shock. She didn't understand. And in that moment, there was only one person who could explain it to her. Even if she didn't like the idea. She walked back in into the manor and ran towards the living room.

- Alexa, don't run around the house… - before Lucius could say anything else, she handed him the newspaper.

- What does that mean? – her face was completely decomposed. Draco looked at her worried. Lucius grabbed the newspaper, and once he saw the headline, he laughed and looked at her.

- "What does that mean?". Isn't it clear, Alexa? Your father managed to escape from Azkaban.

- No, that's…He's alive. – Lucius understood then what she was trying to say.

- Oh…You thought he was dead. – he smiled with amusement. – Who told you that? Your dear "uncle Remus"? – he sighed. Alex couldn't say a word. She was completely shocked. – What a shame…See, your father killed a lot of muggles, and also a couple wizards. He's been in Azkaban for…well, twelve years. He was sentenced to life but considering he has escaped…Once they found him, they'll kill him in the act.

- Excuse me… - Alex turned around. She had heard enough. She was heading to her bedroom when Lucius spoke once again.

- They even say he killed your mother. I wonder why he didn't kill you, too.

- Lucius. – Narcissa spoke.

- What? The girl deserves to know the truth. – Alex could hear the mocking on Lucius's voice. She kept walking. When she arrived at her bedroom, she locked the door behind her.

"He lied to me. He told me the truth and he lied to me, again.". Alex started pacing around her room, unsure of what to do. She heard someone knocking at the door. "He's alive…and, did he kill my mother?". She started picking up her things. "I have to find him. I need to know the truth.". There was another knock on the door, this time, followed by a voice.

- Alex, please, open up. – Draco. He was there. The moment she heard his voice, she calmed down. She couldn't leave. What was she going to do? She didn't know where to find him. If she found him…what if he tried to hurt her? He was a more expertise wizard. And considering how people had look at her during her first year…if she disappeared, people would think that she joined her father. She couldn't let that happen. – Alex? – she opened the door. Draco looked really worried. Before he could say anything else, she hugged him. He hugged her back, and they stayed like that for a couple minutes, in silence.

- What am I going to do now?

- What do you mean? You're going to fight, like you've always done.

- I didn't know he was alive…What if he comes after me?

- He'll have to get through me. – Alex looked Draco in the eyes. He was serious. But she couldn't help but laugh. – What are you laughing about?

- My knight in shining armour. – she burst out a laugh, and he joined as well. At least Alex had Draco. But she would have to deal with everything by herself.
