Author's Note:
The following are records meant to serve as memoirs from the subjects of the Sun Princess, Priscilla.
This serves as a supplemental FanFiction of sorts for "The Sun Princess" of "stingrasher", for the purpose of not only breathing in more life to the story through the addition of context as to what the followers think about a certain nasty-eyed and raven-haired living legend, but also to give said individual the much deserved praise and appreciation that he is owed.
It is not necessary to read this work of mine to appreciate stingrasher's work, which you should most certainly give a read and if it is to your liking Follow, Favorite, and Review. Though it is recommended that you read his work in order to have a better grasp on the context of these memoirs.
Hope you enjoy these bits I came up with, don't be shy to leave a Review and tell me what you think about them and what I have done. And remember, as they say in the YouTube channel Anime Wins, being nice to Subaru is always a win!
Chapter #001: Steven the Soldier
There was a common enough phrase spoken around and about Vollachia that is believed and upheld by many of its citizens, so much so that even those beyond their borders see it as an indisputable fact about their empire.
You're either a defiant wolf, or a naive lamb set for the slaughters.
And, obviously enough, that wasn't something as wishful or hypocritical as a phrase that the people say there to feel better or something, like, for example, "live strong". No, for them it was very much their way of life.
To the citizens of Vollachia, to the people like Steven, they understood that being hopeful wasn't enough, that trying to live strong wouldn't be truly enough. What they needed, and was demanded of them to live, was to truly be strong.
From an early age, Steven had come to understand that you can say whatever you want and spout whatever idealistic rable you believe in, but if you don't have the strength to back it up, the actions to garner your words merit, then all of it would be for naught.
And that's the reason why their empire was a meritocracy.
Because they understood that simply dreaming about a better world or upholding morals and virtue won't be enough to actually get the job done. You have to be proactive, do what is needed to rise up in life and succeed in your goals and ambitions, you have to make sacrifices and seize opportunities as is necessary.
Now do their ideologies lead to morally gray and questionable decisions? Yes, they do indeed. But do they also lead to the strengthening of not only their individual selves but the country as a whole? Without a doubt the answer there is a resounding yes from all of Vollachia.
They'd rather be seen as the cunning and dangerous wolves who roamed the lands, rather than the daydreaming and naive sheep who imagine themselves as dragons with their heads high up in the clouds and tails (sticks) stuck up their rears.
Hanging on to hope and being virtuous didn't save Steven's parents, nor did it bring food to the hungry bellies of his siblings, but becoming a soldier and doing his part would have and did respectively.
That is why in his heart, as is for everyone in Vollachia, he knew that while their ways weren't the most pleasant, it was the one true way that saw things done and lead to progress with brutal, much needed, efficiency.
And then came one Natsuki Subaru.
The young man's existence was one that, while not outright contradicted, certainly challenged the way they had seen things.
The raven haired and nasty eyed individual's existence was a peculiar enigma, having no background of the sort to trace back whatsoever to give credence and reason to the borderline legendary feats that he had accomplished upon popping up on their radar.
The successful hunting of the White Whale, a beast which has plagued and terrorized their world for four hundred years.
The execution of the Archbishop of Sloth, a higher up of the elusive and benign Witch Cult.
The apparent liberation of a place falsely dubbed as Sanctuary, along with the death of another of the Three Great Mabeasts in the process, the Great Rabbit whose numbers were said to be as endless as their hunger.
The defense of Priestella against the Witch Cult which had led to the capture of the Archbishops of Greed and Wrath, as well as the execution of Greed.
And then the conquering of the Pleiades Watchtower, a place were not even the Sword Saint Reinhard was able to overcome.
For all those feats to have been accomplished in the span of a few years is impressive enough already, especially with how long the most of them have been a thorn to the Four Great Nations. But for all of them to be done by, or be because of, a single man?
While imagining the likes of the accursed Sword Saint of Lugunica doing the deeds would not be too farfetched, for it to be a man whose roots are unknown and seemingly popped up from nowhere without a thing to tie to their name and identity until then?
Suffice to say that it had all seemed to be straight out of a fairy tale.
Steven even recalls to have heard of a few rumors about all that being propaganda on Lugunica's part, fabricating those feats to have them appear to be a force to be reckoned with in spite of the loss of their royal family. And yet the stories are so outlandishly unbelievable that even they could not imagine their rival country to be so foolish as to think that anyone would believe such tales without proof, and proof they did have to back them.
And so, their expectations for the man rose, Steven thought to himself, as did many others wonder as well, just what kind of man you would have to be, what strength you must possess to have accomplished such grand feats in a relatively short period of time.
Then, as fate would have it, the people of their empire would be seeing for themselves just what sort of man Natsuki Subaru was as he suddenly appeared deep within their borders, right as a civil war was happening and their lands were in turmoil.
Suffice to say, their initial first-hand impression of him, they were far from impressed with what they saw.
The guy was so scrawny, so weak and unimpressive. Even a regular squire was stronger and more skilled than he was.
The guy had no fangs or claws to really speak of, and while his reflexes were good his actual combat experience was quite lacking.
Whatmore was that he was too kind and soft for his own good, too naive and idealistic.
Overall Natsuki Subaru was just so disappointingly weak. He was most certainly not a wolf.
It truly befuddled Steven and the rest how an individual such as him could have accomplished the feats he was attributed to.
And then, however, after being put through the grinder, perhaps both metaphorically and literally, Natsuki Subaru was put into a spot where they saw him for who he was and what was his worth.
It's true that he wasn't a wolf, but he wasn't a sheep either.
Natsuki Subaru was his own sort of beast, and he was an alpha of his own right as well.
He could not fight, at least not well enough for it to make a difference on his own, that much was true, but the way in which he had led others into battle was unlike any other. The plans and strategies he had crafted resulted in one victory after another.
With the guidance of Natsuki Subaru and the brilliance of their Sun Princess Priscilla Barielle, the impossible was made possible.
Steven bore witness to how Subaru's kindness to those around him was not a weakness, but a strength of his as it garnered him loyalty and information to work with.
In all honesty, he would admit that working under the strange man as a soldier, working for his boss, was quite the enjoyable and rewarding experience.
He was the sort of guy you wouldn't mind doing things for, who made you feel and think that there was no task too daunting to not overcome, and reminded him what it was like to have something resembling the warmth of a family once more.
The soldier came to understand soon enough how Natsuki Subaru was capable of the feats he had accomplished.
The guy was intelligent yet humble, he was not blinded by the hubris which their enemies often succumbed to, that along with his earnest work ethic he was able to formulate and review plans to ensure success.
While he wasn't as much of a brutal and cutthroat wolf as they were, he was also the sort who worked best in a pack. Inspiring and just bringing the best out of people as he reached a helping hand out to them.
And perhaps the most impressive and crucial asset of Natsuki Subaru would be his unyielding determination and perseverance that are unlike anything Steven has ever seen or even heard of. No matter how stacked the odds are against him, how hopeless the situation appears to be, the guy always finds a way to pull through.
His will is borderline inhumane.
Legendary.
Something spoken of only in the tales of the heroes of old, more fictional than anything had Steven not seen it for himself firsthand.
That is the sort of man, the sort of legend his boss, Natsuki Subaru is.
Which is why when the situation in their empire had been resolved, in large part thanks to his boss's efforts, and they had (begrudgingly) escorted him to Priestella so that he could reunite with his friends in Lugunica, when tragedy struck they were still able to recognize him, maybe not for who he was to them, but for who he is.
It is infuriating, yet not honestly not surprising for Steven given his opinion of Lugunica, that Roy Alphard was able to break out of the prison they had held him in.
What is more frustrating however, and is a cause for regret to not only him but everyone who follows their boss as well, was that the archbishop got close to the man they had come to respect greatly and devoured his name.
To this day their inability to protect their boss still vexes Steven immensely, resulting in him being one of the more protective soldiers of Natsuki Subaru.
With his name eaten, Natsuki Subaru's identity was forgotten by everyone. The memory of who he was and what he had done, all of his deeds and accolades, washed away into nothingness. None of the soldiers, none of his friends, nor those he held dearest to his heart remembered who the man was and what a hero he had been, a living legend to many.
And given the fools which those of Lugunica are, they had almost immediately branded the hero as an archbishop himself. Simply thinking of the notion is often to have Steven's blood boil, especially given what had followed after.
Betrayal of the cruelest kind, expecting the warmth of home and yet instead being greeted with burns of unwelcoming flames of irrational emotions.
Torture unimaginable, the hands meant to mend and heal instead made to break and harm.
Isolation colder than he had ever known, for while he was supposedly among friends and loved ones he was undeniably alone and on his own during those times.
And despair deeper and unlike any other, as the light he had once clung to and believed in so fervently proved itself to be false and abandoned him.
That is what Steven's boss received in the hands of those pretentious and self-righteous Lugunicans. Branding him a cultist despite his actions and words claiming otherwise. Simply because he smelled like one, that alone was evidence enough for them, in spite of all the good their boss had still committed even while he suffered and was under unjust scrutiny from those who he once was so eager to reunite with.
Steven won't deny, like the Lugunicans they too had forgotten who Natsuki Subaru was. But unlike those fools they were not blind as to not see who he is.
One of the things that sets their empire apart from Lugunica is that they are a meritocracy. They value merit, they don't judge others simply because of what they are but instead who they are and what they do.
And in the chaos which devolved within Priestella when they were there escorting Rem, as their memory still held that, they witnessed the deeds and were helped by the man known as Natsuki Subaru.
Once again they were wary and suspicious of the man, and once again their boss proved just why they had come to respect and follow him.
Even when the people and the odds were against him, as they often were in the past, Natsuki Subaru overcame what many would think to be impossible, performed feats and organized strategies that bordered on miraculous, and overall showed what kind of good-hearted and determined hero he is.
That's likely the reason why, even without their memories, all of the Vollachians there were compelled to follow their boss once more. To look for him and offer their aid in his time of grave need. And have faith that with him guiding the way there is nothing that they cannot do.
Again, Natsuki Subaru may not be a wolf like Steven and the rest of Vollachia, he wasn't a naive sheep like the Lugunicans either who blindly followed and did as they were told, the man was a beast of his own right and they recognize him as their alpha, their boss.
