A/N: I absolutely adored this scene last night, so I wrote something kind of drabbleish. There's no real pairings, just hints of Izzie/Denny and Izzie/Alex. Both of which I find adorable. Anyway, enjoy!

An Ocean of Grief

She never had a father. He left before she was born. Her mother had boyfriends, but they were never around for long.

Her mother had to work all the time. She was a waitress, and she had picked up two shifts as soon as Izzie was old enough to take care of herself.

She had a daughter, once. A little, tiny, beautiful baby girl. But then she gave her away. Because she couldn't take care of that little girl, without turning into her mother.

She couldn't turn into her mother. She couldn't stay in the trailer park. She wanted more than that. She wanted to grow up and be a doctor and save lives and get respect. Because people in trailer parks don't get respect. That's just how it is.

And then she had Alex, once. She loved him. She really did. And then she saw him with Olivia, and she just couldn't feel the same way. She cared about him. Maybe she could love him. But not right now.

And then she had Denny. And he was kind and sweet and he loved her. He asked her to marry him. And she said yes. Because she loved him, too.

She changed her dress three times that night. She wanted to look perfect.

But then when she got to Denny's room, something was wrong. Olivia was standing there, looking horrified. And Denny was dead. His heart wasn't beating.

Her mind clouded over. She couldn't think straight.

She climbed up on the bed with him. As though maybe, just maybe, if she held him long enough, his heart would begin to beat again.

But it didn't.

And then everyone was coming in. George, and Callie, and Meredith. Cristina, and even Alex.

They were trying to get her to let go of him.

But she couldn't just let go. If she let go, she would lose him. And she couldn't lose him. Not like she lost her daughter. Not like she lost the father she never knew.

Not like she lost Alex, who was standing in front of her.

And when he talked to her, convincing her to let go, she listened. But his words just made the loss more real.

She didn't let go on her own. He helped her, picked her up.

And held her like Denny should have. Like he would haveif he had gotten better, like he was supposed to.

But Alex was there, and Alex was real, and Alex was alive. So she clung to him. Because if she let go, she'd be drowning in an ocean of grief.

And she couldn't take that.
