"Dad! Why do we have to leave? Why now?" Phil was searching for any possible way to avoid the inevitable.
"Because Phil, we don't belong here. It's just not meant to be."
Phil was speechless. 'Not meant to be! How can he say that? Everything was so right! Ugh! I hate the stupid 22nd century! There's nothing there for me. All I want, all I need is…Keely.'
---
They were leaving the next day and there was nothing Phil could do about it. He could only sit back while he lost the love of his life. "Life is so unfair," he sighed.
"Tell me about it."
He jumped at the sound of her voice. He had not noticed her walk up behind him. He didn't think anyone else was around. "KEELY! What are you doing here?"
"I came to say good-bye."
What horrible, awful words; good-bye. They're so depressing. They're so final and they can leave a person so lost and alone.
"And I wanted to give you this," she said handing him a tape.
"What's this?" he wondered.
"Just listen to it." She felt the tears forming in her eyes.
"Listen, Keel, I just want you to know that nothing in this world could ever measure up to how much I love you and that I don't know how I will ever be able to survive without you by my side."
"You did it before," she mumbled.
"But that was before I knew how much I was missing out on. Before I knew what great people there are out there. People that I could love with all my heart and know that they love me back. People like you."
She felt as if she was going to burst. She couldn't though. Not in front of him. She knew his words were true but that didn't take away the pain she felt inside. She focused her gaze on the ground below. He slowly stepped towards her and lifted her droopy chin. Their eyes met briefly and then he pulled her in to a soft kiss.
'Gosh Phil! Why do you have to make things so difficult?'
Slowly a tear made an escape from her eye. She turned to the side so he wouldn't see. She quickly wiped the drop away. "I…I have to…" she stammered.
"Please don't leave yet!" he pleaded.
"It will only make things harder. I'm sorry." She hugged him for what she knew to be the very last time. "I will never forget you Phil Diffy. I love you." With that, she turned and began her walk home.
"I love you, Keels."
She silently began to sob. He was on the verge of a nervous breakdown himself. The only reason he didn't crack was because he knew that Pim would instantly appear. She had a sixth sense for when he was miserable. She would probably taunt him and he just couldn't deal with that right now.
He heard his parents call to him. 'What could they possibly want now?' He began to walk into their house from where he was standing next to the swing in their back yard. It turns out that his parents had decided that they would actually be leaving now instead of the next morning.
"Time to put all your things into the time machine!" he heard his mother shout from the next room. All he could say in response was a simple, "Whatever." He had already said good-bye so why should he pretend they weren't leaving for a few more hours? It would probably only hurt more anyway.
He went upstairs and gathered the final remains of what had been his bedroom for the greatest few years of life. He brought them downstairs and set them inside the time machine.
Then they were gone.
