Shank Speaks
With everything quieted down now, they walked back to where the wolf pack lives so Shank can tell everyone what is going on. The place is a cavern with cliffs, a few trees and other plant life as well. Shank then stood on top of a cliff to gain the pack's attention so she could give her announcement to everyone.
Shank: My brothers and sisters, our summer has almost passed, and I have listened to the trees and to the blades of grass. And they have said this; The caribou will not return this year…
The others were shocked when they heard what she said about the caribou not returning but Shank was not done yet.
Shank: … nor any other year, for they have crossed the Great Water. If we are to survive, we must follow them.
As always though, Big Dan had to disagree with her and start a fight with Little Dan behind him.
Big Dan: The old one still believes that the trees and grass can really talk. It is time to realize that our leader has lost her ability to lead.
Little Dan: Yes, her ability to lead.
That made the others start to argue with him, but before they could argue any further Shank had stopped them.
Wolf 1: How dare you say that!
Wolf 2: Yes, Shank has always led us well.
Shank: Stop! Let him speak. It is his right.
Big Dan: Shank would have us leave the land that has been our clan's home for generations. So what if the caribou do not return this year? This does not mean they will not come again.
Little Dan: Yeah, not come again.
Some of the wolves have begun to believe what Big Dan was saying while the others are still believing Shank.
Wolf 1: Big Dan could be right.
Wolf 2: And he could be wrong.
Girl Wolf: If we do stay, how will we survive without the caribou? They give us life.
Big Dan: Simple. We take what we need from other clans.
Girl Wolf: Steal from others?
Wolf 1: It isn't right.
Wolf 2: When you're hungry, there is no 'right.'
Big Dan: Yes there is a 'right'-our right to survive.
Shank then walked down to them and tried to tell Big Dan about what the other clans will eat but Big Dan doesn't care about that.
Shank: And if we eat the food of other clans, what will they eat?
Big Dan: That is not our concern.
Little Dan: Yeah, not our concern.
Shank: Is not the balance of our world the concern of all? If we steal from other clans, those clans will be forced to steal as well. Soon, we will all be fighting for less and less food.
That had Taffyta and the others very worried about what Shank had said. Shank wasn't done talking yet because started talking about a white wolf.
Taffyta: Uh-oh. 'Less and less food.' That sounds bad, doesn't it, Candlehead?
Candlehead: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Really bad. Unless you're on a diet.
Rancis: Who's on a diet?
Shank: Aniu, the white wolf, has come to me in dream vision… and has told me what we must do. She said we must move on, and we must be led… by the one who is wolf and does not know.
While she was saying that, she was walking toward Ralph and Vanellope while looking at Ralph which made the others shocked. But as usual, Big Dan just had to disagree about what Shank had to say.
Ralph: Huh?
Vanellope: Papa?
Ralph: Look, I'm flattered. Really. I mean, I've led a dog team before, but never a wolf pack.
Big Dan: See here. Our wise leader, who visits the Great Aniuonly in his dreams, has brought a mutt to guide us.
Little Dan: Yeah, a mutt.
The wolves then started laughing about that and Vanellope was growling and backing Big Dan up because she didn't like the way that he was talking about her dad. But she backed up when Ralph told her that it's ok.
Taffyta: What's a 'mutt?'
Candlehead: Beats me.
Ralph: It's all right, Vanellope. His blood may be pure, but his motives aren't.
Not liking it, she walked away and on a boulder to talk about what she thought of Big Dan not wanting to leave. That made the others shocked and Big Dan was arguing against that and demanding that Shank should step down as leader, but Shank refused to do so.
Vanellope: I say Big Dan is afraid to cross the Great Water.
Big Dan: I am not afraid, but crossing the Great Water is impossible! We cannot swim it. We would all die. So now I, Big Dan, say Shank must step down, and let a true leader take her place.
Shank: I will step down, Big Dan, when a true leader takes my place.
That made him growl and jump towards her, but before he could grab her, she disappeared in a whiff of smoke. Realizing that she had disappeared, he started looking for her and demanded her to come out.
Big Dan: Show yourself, Shank. Your magic tricks will not stop me.
He then walked away, yelled at wherever Shank was and told the others to follow him.
Big Dan: I will be a leader who does not depend on foolish dreams! Those who will, follow me!
Everyone except Ralph and Vanellope left to follow him while they stayed. There was a dead tree in the middle and Vanellope noticed something weird in the trunk. With everyone else gone, Shank pulled out of it and the others came to talk to her.
Vanellope: How did you do that?
Shank: I simply became one with the tree.
Ralph: If I tried that, I'd get splinters
Vanellope: Would you teach me?
Shank: It is a thing that cannot be taught. One just knows.
They then walked towards the ocean to find a way to get to the other side with Shank talking to Ralph about how to cross the water.
Shank: But now we must speak of you will lead us to the caribou.
Ralph: Shank, I don't understand how I can lead you anywhere.
While they were talking, Vanellope's eyes started glowing yellow and she saw a vision of the caribou running on some ice floes to get to another island. When she came to, she shook her head to make sure she wasn't hallucinating while Ralph and Shank were still talking.
Vanellope: Caribou.
Ralph: I had these dreams, but I don't even know what they mean.
Shank: Each of us has a unique gift. Perhaps your dreams show us the way.
She then left them to rest which left Ralph confused and Vanellope thought about what she said.
Vanellope: Shank must be right.
She then went to check on her papa to see if he was alright with the raven now cawing in the background. Ralph then started to speak up telling Vanellope that they were going to be leaving soon, but Vanellope was trying to tell him that they had to help.
Ralph: This has gone too far, Vanellope, and it isn't our battle.
Vanellope: But, Papa, I saw caribou.
Ralph: Look, this could get very dangerous. Despite my dreams or anything else, I will not put you in any danger.
Vanellope: But this isn't just about us anymore, is about something bigger. Don't you see? We're supposed to help them. I'm sorry, but whether I stay or go should be my decision.
The wind then started blowing which gave Ralph a sign that winter was coming and he told her that they'll be leaving in the morning.
Ralph: That wind is a sign that winter's coming early. Your mother will be worried sick. We both leave in the morning.
They then left to go lay down and get some sleep until morning.
