"Maybe your gift will be supervision?" Camilo suggested.
"Maybe I'll be able to fly!" Mirabel giggled as she jumped off of the bed, spreading her arms open wide, like wings.
A pair of arms broke her fall. "How about we don't test that theory, ratoncita." Bruno placed Mirabel down, gently tapping her nose before pushing her glasses up so she could see.
"Oh! I know! Maybe you could have laser eyes!" Camilo got excited, slightly bouncing on the bed.
"Maybe." Bruno nodded, sitting cross-legged on the floor. Mirabel immediately placing herself in the gap, snuggling under his green ruana.
"I know!" Mirabel's head popped out from where she had been hiding. "My gift could be like Tio Bruno's! I might be able to see the future!"
Bruno did his very best not to pull a sour face at Mirabel's comment.
"But that's Tío Bruno's gift…" Camilo frowned. "And no one has the same gift as anyone else." He added.
"Maybe I'll be the first." Mirabel shrugged, looking up with wide eyes to her Tío. "What do you think, Tío Bruno?" She asked.
Both of the small eyes looked up at him, waiting for his answer.
"Um…" He started, swallowing down the lump that was growing in his throat. "Well, I think that you'll get a gift much cooler than mine."
"But your gift is one of the coolest in the family." Mirabel smiled.
"Well…" Before Bruno could say anything he was interrupted.
"I know!" Camilo jumped down from Mirabel's bed. "Tío Bruno could look into the future and see what your gift is." Bruno flinched as he heard his words.
"Tío Bruno doesn't look into the family's future, silly." Mirabel pointed out. "Besides, it'll ruin the surprise. Right Tío?"
"Right."
"He looked into Isabela's and Dolores'," Camilo said flatly. "So why won't he look anymore?"
"Because he doesn't want to, duh." Mirabel crossed her arms and stood in front of her Tío protectively.
Bruno couldn't help but laugh at the two's banter.
The door to the nursery opened revealing Pepa and Julieta.
"No!" Camilo whined upon seeing his mother. "Five more minutes." He pleaded.
"You know the rules, Camilo. Bed." Pepa said as she gestured for the boy to exit.
"Ugh…" He groaned before making eye contact with his Mamá. "Fine. Buenas noches Tío." He said as he begrudgingly hugged Bruno, who had kneeled to the ground. "Buenas noches Mira."
Camilo bid goodnight to Julieta before following his Mamá to his own room. Julieta smiled and shook her head before looking at her younger brother giving him a 'what can you do?' smirk. She walked up to her daughter.
"You to cosa linda." Julieta's head gestured to the bed, waiting for her daughter to climb in.
"Mamá?" Mirabel asked. Julieta sat down next to the girl who was getting comfortable and looked down at her in response. "Can Tío Bruno put me to bed tonight?" She looked towards her uncle, who froze upon hearing his name.
Agustín entered the room, patting Bruno on the shoulder as he passed. "You ready for sleep Miraboo?" He asked as he kissed her on the forehead. He sat down next to Julieta, a warm smile on his face. "Need a song to help you fall asleep?"
"Can Tío Bruno put me to bed Papí? Por favor?" She gave her very best puppy dog eyes, waiting for an answer. Both of her parents turned to look at Bruno, not wanting to force him into anything.
"Mamí? Papí?" Mirabel looked between the two.
Julieta looked at her younger brother, waiting for the confirmation in his eyes. The father-daughter duo looked between the two, watching as they spoke words that seemingly only the two of them understood.
"Sure kid." Bruno shrugged as he walked towards the bed.
Mirabel smiled as a little giggle slipped out. The three adults couldn't help but smile at the four-year-old.
"Buenas noches, mi pequeño milagro." Agustín moved a small curl out from her eyes before moving away from the bed, waiting for his wife to join him.
"Buenas noches, mi dulce" Julieta peppered her face with small kisses. "Duerme bien." Julieta joined her husband before the two walked out, gently closing the door behind them.
"Okay ratoncita." Bruno smiled as he pulled the cover over the tiny human. "You comfortable?" He asked as he brushed his fingers through her hair.
"Mhm." She nodded, her brown eyes piercing his hazel ones.
"Good." He tapped her nose before removing her glasses, placing them on the dresser beside the bed.
"Alright kid." He gave Mirabel a hug before standing up. "Get to dream land safe." He chuckled to himself, slightly shaking his head as he said it.
"Wait!" Mirabel called out for her Tío. He turned his head around to see what it was she wanted. "You forgot to kiss bunny goodnight." She held out a small white bunny.
"Ah…" He smacked his forehead and exaggerated his forgetfulness. "How could I forget?" He asked. "Buenas noches bunny."
"You gotta give him a kiss goodnight."
"Alright." He sighed, leaning down to kiss the plush toy. Anything to make her smile.
He got mere inches away from the toy before he felt Mirabel giving him a kiss on the cheek. She began to giggle as her Tío gave a large gasp and a look of betrayal.
"Tienes suerte de ser linda." He pointed his finger at the girl before jabbing her sides. "Alright." He said, placing his hands on the four-year-old's shoulder, doing his best to try and calm the girl. "Cama. De verdad esta vez."
"Okay…" The girl sighed, flopping back on the bed.
oOoOoOoOoOoOo
Mirabel could feel Casita moving her bed around, trying to wake Mirabel up.
"I'm awake, I'm awake." Mirabel giggled as Casita slid her glasses to the small girl. "You want to come help me wake everyone up?" She asked as she placed her glasses on the bridge of her nose. She smiled as Casita bounced in response.
Then, a drawing of the town that she had drawn a few days ago was bounced over to her from the magical house. Casita shifted below the girl, catching her attention. "What Casita?" Mirabel laughed. The drawing moved again. "What?" She looked down at the picture. "The town?" Realisation hit. "We get to go into town today!" She beamed.
Slipping on a dress that her Mamá had pulled out for her, she couldn't help but ramble about how excited she was. She looked at the hairbrush that sat on top of her dresser. "I'll have to ask Mamí for help when she gets up. Let's go." She skipped out of the room, humming a small tune.
Camilo's room. Three knocks.
She poked her head into his room.
"C'mon Camilo! We're going into town today!"
Dolores' room. One knock.
"Buenos días, Prima." She said only just sticking her head into the room.
Isabela's room. Five knocks.
"Buenos días." Isabela sat up from her bed, smiling at her youngest sister as she brushed her hair. "You look pretty this morning."
Luisa's room. Eight knocks.
Luisa immediately opened the door, smiling at her sister. "Buenos días." Luisa said as she walked past Mirabel to start her small morning workout.
Mamí and Papí's room. Two knocks.
She opened the door before climbing up on her parent's bed. Jumping up and down, doing her best to avoid landing on one of their legs.
"Mamí, Papí! It's time to get up! We get to go into town today!" Julieta got up and began to get ready for the day as Agustín ushered his youngest out to allow the two to get ready.
Tía Pepa and Tío Félix's room. Two knocks
Félix answered the door. He thanked Mirabel for waking them before closing the door.
Abuela's room. Four knocks.
"Buenos días, Abuela." Mirabel was a lot calmer. "We go into town today." She smiled.
Tío Bruno's room. Eight knocks.
"Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock on wood." She muttered, remembering something that her Tío does. She walked into his room, watching as sand fell from the wall. She giggled as she felt the falling sand on her hand.
She walked through the curtain of sand, forgetting the drop.
"Wah!" She screamed, face planting into a pile of sand.
Within an instant, Bruno was at her side, fussing over the small girl, brushing sand off her.
"Tío!" She yelled, startling the man from the volume. "We get to go into town today!" She grabbed his hand and led him back up to the door.
"Are you okay?" He asked again.
"Yep." She smiled.
When the two entered the house, everyone was up. A light chatter filled the air.
Camilo was doing his very best to sneak extra food.
Isabela was happily chatting with Dolores.
Luisa was moving furniture around to better suit the family, Papí was helping her.
Mamí was getting everything set out, ready for breakfast, Casita setting the table.
Tía Pepa was doing her best to avoid her morning cloud, Tío Félix helping her any way he could.
Bruno and Mirabel watched as Abuela entered the room and the chatter quieted.
"Family." She said, standing at the top of the stairs. "After breakfast, we will all be going into town. As always, we will all help the towns with our gifts. Do not embarrass the family." She demanded. "La Familia Madrigal." She spoke, waiting for the family to repeat.
"La Familia Madrigal." They all repeated.
She couldn't wait.
She couldn't wait to go out into the town and help her family.
She couldn't wait to tag along all day, happily watching as they showed off their gifts.
She couldn't wait until her fifth birthday that was rapidly approaching.
She couldn't wait to have a special gift all of her own.
She couldn't wait to make her family proud.
