Hello everyone ! Starting today this story will now update every week until it either ends or V9 starts !
Please enjoy !
Neo was cheering in the stands. Well, as much as a mute can cheer, although the twins next to her were perfectly compensating for her lack of voice.
When she had came back home and told the twins she was going to see the tournament, Miltia and Melanie pestered their mother until she finally gave in and bought them both tickets. Even Ember somehow found one on her own.
So here the four of them were, watching as the best Huntsmen and Huntresses fought it out in the ring.
Well, to say they were the best might be a bit of a stretch. Their levels were around 14 to 15 after all, but according to the twins this was the only tournament for Huntsmen, so there couldn't be anyone better out there.
That is, unless they didn't participate, but Neo didn't bother pointing that out.
The stands were packed with people, all eyes focused on the matches which were broadcast thanks to many cameras. Neo had taken Roman's warning to heart and was now dressed in a simple white dress and only had brown hair. Nobody who knew her would be able to recognize her this way.
The matches came in and went, all extremely entertaining, but none more so than when a particular champion walked in the arena.
Pyrrha Nikos, 14 years old and current reigning champion. The Invincible Girl they called her, for nobody had ever been able to land a solid hit on her.
And when Neo observed her, she instantly knew why.

Neo was astounded. That semblance was seriously ridiculous, and that AC of 32 was above anything she had seen prior.
She quickly made some calculations in her head. If she used her illusions, Pyrrha would only have a 50% chance of hitting her, while she would have a 45 to 55% chance of hitting Pyrrha, even with that massive defense.
It seemed like a fair fight, until you realized Pyrrha would only need one or two hits to put her down, while Neo would need five, at the very least.
But that was only if Neo used her illusions. If she wanted to fight Pyrrha in the arena, then she couldn't use what would very obviously point to her. This meant Pyrrha would have a 70% chance of hitting her, and she only had a 20% chance of hitting Pyrrha.
Of course, if she used Dust, then she'd have far better chances, especially since Pyrrha's defense will drop if she can't use her semblance. However, Dust usage was forbidden in the Arena, per the rules of this particular tournament.
Yup, fighting Pyrrha now would lead to an instantaneous defeat. Neo had to resign herself to the stands, and hope she'd be able to train enough to one day fight down there.
The fights in the arena were interesting, that's for sure, and the twins would be sure to pester Neo to learn all the cool moves they've seen so far.
Yet, no fight had marked Neo more than when the final came along, and Pyrrha fought against the next best fighter in the tournament.

Neo was looking forward to this. On paper, this match was stacked against Pyrrha. Pyrrha may have a 90% chance of hitting Chili, but her opponent still had a 45% chance of hitting her.
Once you noted that Pyrrha would lose after taking 56 damage while Chili could take 121, and that Chili would deal about twice as much damage as Pyrrha, and you could easily see this wouldn't end well for the current Champion.
But Neo had learned that stats were only that, stats.
Neo had seen, over the course of this tournament, many fighters win against the odds. If she had bet on the results she was expecting she would have lost all her savings.
For while the roll of a dice was based on chance, here the dice everyone was rolling was their own bodies. Bodies they had some level of control over.
In the end, the stats she saw showed only the chances if everyone was fighting perfectly, with full knowledge of their opponent. And this was definitely not the case.
Especially here, since Pyrrha's semblance was a mystery to everyone, including her current opponent.
This meant that while Pyrrha should have a 90% chance of hitting the man, Chili would be fighting as if Pyrrha only had a 65% chance of hitting him. Still a lot, but the error was significant.
And when attacking Pyrrha, Chili would be expecting a 70% chance of hitting, instead of his real 45%.
No matter what, the unexpected difference would leave the man unable to ever touch Pyrrha. Every fighter did their best to roll their dices just at the number needed to hit, to avoid exhausting themselves.
For while dices couldn't be exhausted, bodies will.
Chili started the fight by launching himself at his opponent. He was wielding a large broadsword which he easily swung at Pyrrha.
The young champion rolled to the side, and took aim at the giant. Two shots fired, and two landed.

The fight had just started, and Pyrrha had already removed almost 15% of her opponent's aura. Yet, he wasn't anywhere near done.
Chili only needed to take a step towards Pyrrha to reach her, and he swung again. This time Pyrrha gracefully slid under the sword and stabbed at his ankle.

That second aura hit had been Pyrrha's. Since Huntsmen's aura went over their weapon, it would be used to protect it from wear and tear. It seemed this attack had hurt the blade of Pyrrha's spear quite a bit against Chili's semblance.
Still, this meant Chili's bar was under 75% while Pyrrha's was just below 95%.
Pyrrha jumped away, trying to put some distance before firing her rifle again, but Chili followed suit, and rammed his shoulder into the young teenager. Pyrrha had managed to block it with her shield, but she was still sent flying a few meters away, with Chili hot on her trial.

Pyrrha skillfully landed on her feet. It was clear that her block had stopped most of the damage, to the point that her aura had lowered as much from the hit as from protecting her shield from her opponent's semblance.
Chili wasn't done, and swung his sword upwards. Calm and collected, Pyrrha slid next to the broadsword and changed her weapon to it's short sword form before cutting at Chili's wrist.

The hit was a bit shallow, and Chili's semblance almost made Pyrrha's aura bar drop as much as his did. Yet, Pyrrha continued moving without as much as a blink.
She moved closer, anticipating her opponent's attempt at moving to the side, and pushed her shield on his chest.

Then, using her shield to add precision to her strike, Pyrrha stabbed Chili with her spear.
- 14 AP
- 1 AP
This caused a bit of an uproar as the spear's blade clearly went inside the man, but it was to no issue on the match. Aura protected people, so while the spear would penetrate, no blood was actually drawn. And once it was pulled out, there would be no wound to be seen, not even a hole in Chili's clothes.
Her spear taken out, Pyrrha quickly hopped away, putting some distance between herself and her opponent while giving some time for the crowd to read their aura bars.
Pyrrha was still at around 80%, while Chili was under 60%. It was a significant advantage for the girl, and while she could technically wait for the time out, arena courtesy was to still accept her opponent's attacks.
So Chili charged, and Pyrrha was waiting and ready.
He swung his sword down, diagonally going from left to right, and Pyrrha ducked before dashing in. Her spear slashed her opponent's chest before she shifted her weapon into its rifle form and shot once.

Then, before Chili had the chance to attack the girl within his guard, she shifted back and blocked his strike with both her shield and sword.
The sheer strength behind the hit forced Pyrrha back, and Chili followed suit, unleashing strike after strike on the young girl.
Each strike was blocked, but each forced Pyrrha closer to the edge of the arena. It seemed Chili was aiming to win by pushing her out of bounds.
Pyrrha saw it as well, of course, and wasn't going to simply let it happen. She was hard pressed, but still found a chance at sliding under her opponent's blade, exactly what he was waiting for.
Pyrrha's face moved right in front of Chili's suddenly raised knee, and then her body moved in a way Neo knew for sure wasn't possible.
Pyrrha's feet flew high up in the air, as if she had just jumped, and she raised her body as well. before turning around and aiming her rifle at Chili's back.

Two shots rung true, and before Chili could get out of his shock Pyrrha fell down, stabbing her sword into his back and trailing it all the way down his back.

And finally, Pyrrha's weapon shifted to its lance form before she dealt the final blow, stabbing Chili's back.

The bell rung, signalling the end of the match, and Pyrrha stopped, panting.
Chili's aura was just below 18%, while Pyrrha's was at just above 61%. She had won.
For the second time in a row, Pyrrha would be the champion of Mistral's tournament.
Neo was ecstatic, and so were the twins and Ember. She had never thought simply watching other people fight could be so entertaining, and yet, she craved for more.
Training with Ember was fun, but it could get pretty repetitive after a while. Neo longed for a bit more diversity.
She wished she could participate in the tournament, but without aura they wouldn't let her in. And while Neo knew that aura tracking devices considered her to have aura, she also knew the jig would be up the moment she would be hit.
This meant that, if she wanted to participate, she would need to be good enough to avoid any hit. She would need to be untouchable.
And, since the fights would be seen by all of Remnant, then she couldn't use her very recognizable 'semblance', even if nobody would be able to guess it was in fact Dust.
Neo was determined though. She would find a way to ensure she could fight her way to Pyrrha. She would find a way to user her illusions without showing them to the world.
It would not be this year, it might not even be the next, but Neo would succeed. She will train to make use of her Dust in the ring. She will train to win even without using Dust.
No matter what, Neo wanted to go down there, fight, and win.

Well, time for a training montage ^^
For those wondering, that bit about how skilled fighter can somewhat control their dice-rolls means that they aim at around a certain number, high enough to hit but not too high as to exhaust themselves too much.
Did I just make that up on the fly because I couldn't increase Pyrrha's AC anymore without making her completely broken and because I realized Neo's illusionist bonus only makes her broken at early levels and will lose it's effectiveness the higher her level gets? Nooooooo, of course not, that's silly. Everything was planned. I swear.
I know this chap's a bit short compared to the others I made for this story, however I promise the next ones will more than compensate for this. I just needed to do a little setup before then. And give Pyrrha time to shine on her own, because we all know she deserves this.
