Things were getting only worse in the A block. Hershel and DJ were doing everything they could to help their people as best as they could, but they couldn't help everyone, because of how many sick people were in the A block at the moment. Seeing the trouble that the farmer and the brickhouse were having with taking care of so many sick people at the same time, a few sick people who were feeling better than the rest volunteered to help them.
DJ, Noah and Cody were gathered around a bunk in one of the cells in the A block, because they were taking care of a sick woman who was having trouble with breathing. Cody and Noah were holding her down, making sure she was going to stay on the bunk as DJ slowly placed a plastic pipe which was connected to an air bag in her mouth.
"Layla." DJ spoke up to her, placing the pipe deeper in her mouth, "You need to stay calm. We're trying to help you."
Layla just gave him a small nod of her head in response, and did her best to calm down a bit which helped DJ in finishing his job. He quickly grabbed the air bag and pressed it, which was followed by another press and another as he started pumping pumping air into Layla's lungs.
"At least she didn't squeeze as much as the others did." Noah stated, glancing DJ who was pumping air into Layla's lungs.
DJ nodded as turned to look at Cody who coughed a few times into his wrist, "Can you take over for me?"
"Sure." Cody nodded, taking the air bag from DJ and starting to pump air into Layla's lungs.
"Every five to six seconds, squeeze." DJ explained, "You start feeling lightheaded, grab somebody else to take over."
Cody nodded in understanding, "Understood."
"Remember." DJ continued, shifting his gaze between Noah and Cody, "Don't be afraid to tell me if you'll want to take a break."
"What about you?" Cody asked him, "You deserve a break more than we do."
DJ waved it off, "I'll rest once Daryl will return with the medication, I promise."
"For how long will it keep her alive?" Noah asked as if he already knew that Layla didn't had much time left.
"Just as long as we're willing to do it." DJ answered as he stood up and walked over to the exit from the cell, intending to check on more people, "As long as it takes."
"And how long that really is?" Noah wanted to know, standing up from his kneeling position and approaching DJ who was about to exit the cell.
DJ sighed, "Hopefully long enough."
Maggie, Geoff, Ezekiel and Izzy stood in front of the fence, stabbing the walkers who were on the other side through it as the undead were practically pilled in against the fence. They stopped what they were doing when the sound of someone riding in the direction of the prison rang through their ears. The group of four quickly ran over to the gate and saw the Hyundai driving towards them, which meant only one thing. Rick, Chef and Carol have returned from their supply run.
Maggie quickly opened the gate, letting the Hyundai in, before closing it even faster than she opened it, not wanting the walkers to enter their side of the fence. There was one thing that she and the others quickly noticed about the Hyundai. Carol was nowhere to be seen.
Rick and Chef got themselves out of the Hyundai, the former asking, "Carl, Judith, are they okay?"
"Yeah." Maggie nodded in confirmation.
"Where's Carol, eh?" Ezekiel asked.
Rick didn't respond to Zeke's question and continued, "Glenn, Hershel, Sasha, Chris, DJ?"
"Gwen, Cody, Noah, Harold?" Chef added.
"They're alive." Geoff assured them, "But from what I've heard from DJ when I and Bridge went to talk with him, he said that it's bad and it's only getting worse."
"Daryl's not back, yet." Izzy added.
"Guys, where's Carol?" Maggie repeated Ezekiel's question.
"It was her. She killed Karen and David." Rick declared as Maggie's, Geoff's, Ezekiel's and Izzy's eyes widened at the revelation they just got from him. Izzy and Ezekiel exchanged shocked looks with each other while Maggie and Geoff just stared at Chef and Rick in shock, "She was trying to stop it from spreading."
"We didn't want to kick her out, but we figured out that it would be for the best for her." Chef added, "Tyreese is gonna be back here soon and we didn't want her to be here when he will return because it is quite easy to say what will happen when he'll find out that she killed Karen. Don't worry. We gave her everything she needed to survive out there."
"I'll tell Hershel. Don't tell anyone else yet." Rick said to which everyone gave their own response of understanding. He and Chef turned around and started walking towards the Hyundai again, but stopped when someone called out for them.
"Chef. Rick." Izzy called out for them, "The cluster's getting bigger than the one that took the fence down. We need to do something."
Chef looked at Rick right after hearing this information from Izzy, "I'll help them figure something out. You go talk with Hershel."
Rick walked into the administration building, carrying the bag with the food supplies that he gathered with Chef and Carol during their supply run, intending to give the bag to his son and the other children who were staying administration building at this moment because of the flu.
"Carl!" He called out for his son, walking through the building, "Carl?"
His son came out of the corner ahead of him, "You okay?"
"I was gonna ask you that." Rick told him.
Carl took a few steps towards his dad, "We're fine."
"No one's sick?" Rick wanted to be sure, "You didn't have to do anything?"
"Haven't had to use my gun, Dad." Carl gave him an assuring nod of his head.
"And Judith?" Rick asked him another question.
"She's with Beth." Carl replied.
"Good." Rick nodded, as he placed the bag of food on the floor and slided it across it to his son, "Found some food on the run. There's a bunch of fruit leather in there. Have everybody brush their teeth after."
Carl picked up the bag and slouched it over his shoulder, "Can we come out soon?"
Rick shook his head, "Not just yet."
"Dad, I was around you when you were in the middle of it." Carl pointed out, "And I was around Patrick. I didn't get it. I can help you."
"Thanks, but I need you to stay here. " Rick said, turning around towards the exit from the building.
"I will, but..." Carl paused for a second, "Dad, you can't keep me from it."
"From what?" Rick wanted to know, turning to look at his son again.
Carl responded with, "From what always happens."
DJ and Hershel walked together through the A block, checking on their patients. They passed by Glenn who was pumping air into the lungs of a ginger haired man. Gwen was sitting on the floor next to him, just in case if Glenn was going to need her help in anything. They looked up at them and assured that they were alright and didn't had to switch with anyone.
DJ and Hershel nodded their heads to that and thanked them for what they were doing before walking further into the cellbock, intending to check on the other patients. The moment they disappeared from Gwen's and Glenn's view, the goth placed her wrist on her mouth, letting out a few coughs into it as Glenn placed his free hand on his forehead.
DJ took a look into Layla's cell when he and Hershel reached it and saw Chris and Harold taking care of the sick woman instead of Noah and Cody, "Hey, Harold, Chris. Where's Noah and Cody?"
"They needed to take a break." Chris explained as he looked up at them as Harold focused his attention on pumping air into Layla's lungs, trying to hide the fact that he felt like he was going to collaps at any moment from everyone, "We told them that we'll switch them for as long as we can."
DJ nodded his head in understanding, as he and Hershel pushed themselves into walk, once again, walking past the cell and disappearing from Chris' view. They didn't walk for long, though, because eventually they reached Dr. Stevens' cell.
Hershel walked into the cell and knelt down in front of her, placing his bag of medication next to him, "Let's have a look at you."
"Don't. It's too late for me." Dr. Stevens shook her head and turned to look at Hershel and DJ, "Not everyone gets to live. End stage is a point that no one comes back from or they- or they can't. That's where I am. At least I won't die in a place where I'm completely terrified that it's leader may kill me." She pointed at the small table in front of theml, "I made some more IVs. If you're not ready to lose one, you're gonna lose them all. It's like turning off a light- it'll happen one after the other. And they don't just die."
"We can hold on." Hershel said, trying to give her some hope as Dr. Stevens stood up from her bunk and sat down on the floor, "Anna..."
"After what happened in the other cell block, when I came in here, I brought these." Dr. Stevens reached under the bunk and pulled out a box with four small shotguns in it, giving Hershel and DJ a pretty good look at them.
Hershel took a quick look at the shotguns before looking up at Dr. Stevens, "Get back in bed now. We're not that bad off."
Dr. Stevens sighed as she slowly returned to the bunk, sitting down on it, "When we are, it'll be too late. You don't understand. You have a chance. This is it after this."
"We didn't came here to give up on anyone." DJ spoke up for the first time since this conversation began to which Hershel nodded in agreement, "Not yet."
Dr. Stevens let out a few deep breaths, "Just make sure everyone's doors are shut."
"Anna..." Hershel began.
Dr. Stevens cut him off, raising her voice a bit, "Just make sure!"
Hershel was about to say something but his words died in his throat when Dr. Stevens started coughing. He grabbed the flashlight, "Anna, you've got to let me look at you."
Hershel placed his other hand on Dr. Stevens' shoulder, making her look at him, giving him and DJ a pretty good look at her bloody eyes and mouth, "...Have a look."
Cody placed his hand on his chin, trying to figure out his next move as he and Noah were in the middle of the chess game.
"We'll have to thank Izzy and Zeke for bringing our chess set here." He said, breaking the silence between him and his friend, "At least we have something that helps us take our minds off this entire flu."
"Yeah." Noah said, "I never thought that I'll spend the last hours of my life playing chess with you."
Cody sighed, 'Noah."
"What?" Noah asked, "I'm trying to be realistic. This goddamn flu is killing our people like flies. It may be a matter of time before either Hershel or DJ will rush into this cell because either you or I is going to need the same treatment as Layla."
"I know." Cody admitted, not angry at Noah because he knew that it was the way his friend was showing that he was afraid, "But the least we can do right now is to hope that Daryl will return soon."
Noah shrugged, "If you say so."
It was when they heard someone coughing which was coming from outside of the cell. They took their attention off their game and shifted it towards the coughing. They got themselves back on their feet and exited the cell, glancing down to see Hershel and DJ standing in front of a coughing man who was laying on the floor, his face facing it.
The coughing man eventually stopped coughing. Hershel knelt down in front of him and checked his pulse. The farmer let out a sigh. The man who was coughing just a few seconds earlier was dead. He looked up at DJ, intending to tell him what happened, but stopped himself from doing so when he saw everyone from A block staring at him, DJ and the body, "Everyone, get back in your cells."
"Go on." DJ said, looking at the sick people around him, as Sasha and Harold brought them the stretcher, "Get back in your cells."
"Let's get him on this." Harold said. He and Sasha looked incredibly pale.
"We will get him on this." DJ said, referring to him and Hershel to which the farmer nodded, "You already did enough."
The brickhouse grabbed the lifeless body of a man by it's legs as Hershel stood up from his kneeling position and grabbed the same body by it's shoulders. They lifted it up and placed it on the stretcher. They were about to wheel it out of everyone's view, but stopped themselves from doing so when they heard coughing. It was Harold.
"I'll take care of it." Hershel told him, referring to the body on the stretcher, "You check on Harold."
DJ nodded, "Got it."
DJ quickly moved towards Harold, intending to check him as Hershel wheeled the stretcher with the corpse on top of it out of the cellblock, away from everyone's view. He wheeled it into the room with the glass standing in the middle of it. He pulled out his knife and was about to place it in the man's brain, but ultimately couldn't bring himself to do it.
He put the knife aside and placed the sheet's over the man's body, not wanting to see his face. He grabbed his knife down, once again and placed it in the dead man's brain, making sure that he was not going to return as a walker. He pulled his knife out of the man's brain before the familiar voice rang through his ears.
"Hershel." Rick's voice called out to him from the other side of the glass.
Hershel turned to the source of the voice and saw Rick standing on the other side of the glass, "Third one we've lost. We're burning them behind the blocks. Burning them. That's what it's come to."
"Are you okay?" Rick asked, concerned.
"I talked to him yesterday about Steinbeck." Hershel replied, "He told me a quote. "A sad soul can kill quicker than a germ." That's exactly why I didn't want them all to see what happens. I know they know, but I didn't want them to see it right now."
"They're seeing you and DJ, Hershel." Rick told him, "They see you two keep going. Even after all the choices keep getting taken away. When we get past this thing... it's not gonna be like how it was, is it?"
Hershel shook his head, "No."
"Was that denial?" Rick asked him, "Not seeing things for how they were?"
"No." Hershel once again shook his head, "You just caught a break. You needed some time. You got some. You got lucky. We all did. I still think there's a plan. I still believe there's a reason."
"You think it's all a test?" Rick wanted to be sure if he understood Hershel's words correctly.
"Life was always a test, Rick." Hershel pointed out.
It was when DJ rushed into the room, "Hershel! I need your help, now."
Hershel looked at him, "What's wrong, DJ?"
"It's Sasha and Harold." DJ explained, "They collapsed."
Hershel instantly reacted to the information DJ just gave him. He send Rick a quick look before before following DJ out of the room. The brickhouse led him straight to Harold and Sasha who were laying on the floor, unconsciouss. They quickly started pulling out everything that they needed and started reviving them, not wanting to see either of them die.
Neither of them could see a woman laying on the bunk in one of the cells, not a single breath leaving her lungs. Her chest started rising up after a moment of laying motionless on the bunk. She opened her eyes, having returned as a walker.
Chef, Rick, Maggie, Ezekiel, Geoff and Izzy were standing in front of the fence, putting some big tree branches against the fence, taking care of the walker and fence problem. They knew that the posibility of this working was pretty low but it was their best option right now.
"I just talked to your dad." Rick said to Maggie, "He looks good, all things considered."
"What about DJ?" Geoff asked, placing the tree branch against the fence with Chef, "Did you see him too?"
"I've only seen him for a few seconds, but he looked good too." Rick replied as Geoff gave him a grateful nod of his head in response.
"If Carl were sick, would you be up there with him?" Maggie asked Rick, walking towards the fence with him, both of them carrying the large tree branch.
"If I thought I could help." Rick responded, stopping in front of the fence with Maggie.
"You don't think I can help?" Maggie asked him another question, placing the tree branch against the fence with him.
She didn't receive the answer from Rick because one of the walkers placed it's arm through the fence and grabbed Rick by his leg, bringing him down to the ground. Everyone were allerted by it and Maggie was the quickiest one to react. The older Greene picked up a hatchet and brought it down on the walker's arm, cutting it into pieces, and freeing Rick from the undead's grasp.
"I'm just glad you're out here with me." Rick replied to Maggie's question from earlier as she brought him back on his feet, "I'm glad all of you are here with me."
Hershel was in Sasha's cell, staring at the dark skinned woman who was laying on the floor, her head under the pillow that the farmer took from her bunk. Hershel shined his flashlight at her, waiting for her to wake up and wondering if Harold awoke after DJ took the unconsciouss nerd to his cell.
"Welcome back." The farmer said when Sasha slightly opened her eyes.
"I passed out?" Sasha asked him right after opening her eyes.
"You were dehydrated and so was Harold." Hershel explained, "Being a hero takes a lot out of you."
"You and DJ should know." Sasha stated, "I thought you two were idiots for coming here. I mean, I was sure you two were just gonna be two dead foolish people."
Hershel smiled, "I can't tell if that's a compliment."
"I don't know what I'm saying." Sasha let out a short bittesweet laugh, "I must have hit my head. I don't believe in magic or luck. I do the math and I don't gamble. But I don't know if I'd be here right now if you and DJ weren't so damn stupid. "
"You know what?" Hershel's smile widened a bit, "I'm gonna take that as a compliment."
Glenn and Gwen continued to take care of the ginger haired man, the latter switched with the former a while ago and was now pumping air into his lungs, despise being completely exhausted and feeling terrible. She placed her hand on the man's neck to check his pulse and her eyes widened a bit. There was no pulse. The man was dead.
"Is he?" Glenn wanted to be sure to which Gwen nodded in confirmation. He slowly stood up from his sitting position and started pressing his hands against the man's chest, attempting to revive him, but unfortunely it didn't work. Gwen sighed as he took the plastic pipe out of his mouth because there was no need to use it on this man anymore and there could be another person in the A block that needed it.
"Her..." Gwen's words died in her throat as she attempted to call out for Hershel and DJ, intending to tell them that the flu killed another person. She placed her wrist in front of her mouth as she realized what was about to come. She started coughing violently. This attack of coughing was the worst one she had since coming to this block.
It only became worse from there. She unconvered her mouth and placed her hands on the floor, coughing into it. Her eyes widened when she saw how a few small drops of blood fell out of her mouth. She collapsed on the floor, coughing out more drops of blood which landed on the ground.
"Gwen..." Glenn said to her in worry, but he too was cut off by a violent attack of coughing and it was just a matter of time before he joined Gwen on the floor, both of them coughing violently as blood was dripping out of their mouths.
Cody who had his cell not too from them, heard the coughing, and slowly made his way out of it, worried that someone was having a violent attack of coughing and Hershel and DJ were unable to help them at this moment. He went to the cell next to his and conviced Noah to check this out with him. The duo walked over to the cell from which the coughing was coming from and stepped into it. Their eyes widened in shock when he saw Gwen and Glenn on the ground, coughing out their own blood.
"Guys..." Lizzie's voice sounded behind them. They looked at the girl who appeared out of nowhwere and saw her pointing at the body on the bunk. The body was moving. The man has returned as a walker.
"Hershel!" Cody called out for Hershel, then for DJ, "DJ!"
Hershel and DJ who were checking their patients heard Cody's cries and titled their heads in their direction. It was when everything started going from bad to much, much worse as the walkers started coming out of the cells. Hershel and DJ failed to notice this because they were making their way towards Cody and one of the undead used this to it's advantage, bringing Hershel to the floor.
The farmer struggled to get the undead off of him as DJ quickly came to his aid, kicking the undead in it's head with as much force as he could at this moment and sending the walker away from who heard everything that was happening outside of his cell rushed out of it and saw DJ and Hershel battling against a walker. He pulled out hs Glock and fired it at the undead, getting rid of it.
Hershel looked around him and DJ and saw a few more walkers coming out of the cells. He quickly declared to every person that was still alive, "Stay in your cells!"
Rick, Chef, Maggie, Izzy, Ezekiel and Geoff who were in the middle of preparing another set of tree branches which were going to put against the fence heard the shot which came from the A block and quickly turned their heads towards the said block.
Rick shifted his gaze between Maggie, Geoff, Ezekiel and Izzy who stopped what they were doing once they heard the shot, "Go."
"Check what is going on in there." Chef added.
"What about you two, eh?" Ezekiel asked him and Chef, shifting his gaze between Rick and Chef.
"The fence is more important." Maggie stated, turning to look at them.
Izzy nodded, "She's right. We need to keep it standing."
"We got this." Rick said in an assuring manner.
"The two of you can't do this alone." Geoff stated
"We'll figure something out." Chef assured them, "We always do."
This was enough for Maggie, Geoff, Izzy and Ezekiel. The group of four pushed themselves into run, heading towards the A block, leaving Rick and Chef alone to deal with the fence problem. Rick started heading in his own direction right after they disappeared from their view, telling Chef that he was going to get someone to help them.
After all, he remembered his son telling him that he could help them earlier that day.
Lizzie clapped her hands together, leading the walker away from Cody and Noah who were taking care of Gwen and Glenn. They had to quickly check how these two were doing and Lizzie volunteered to lead the walker away from them and give them enough time to check on Gwen and Glenn. It was wasy for the bookworm and the geek to say that these two were having trouble with breathing and there was only one thing they could do with it.
Cody picked up the air bag which was laying on the floor and looked at Noah, having no idea on who he should use it. He shifted his gaze between Glenn and Gwen, and the the former weakly reaching his hand out towards Gwen, as if he was telling them to use it on her.
"We need another air bag." Cody stated the obvious, kneeling down in front of Gwen. He put his free hand on her mouth and started slowly opening it, making sure to not do anything to harm her or to get any of the blood she was coughing out on himself.
"I'll get it." Noah said to which Cody nodded, starting to put the pipe in Gwen's mouth.
The bookworm moved out of the cell and started heading across the A block, trying to spot another air bag anywhere. It was when an idea popped into his mind. He exactly knew where to find one. He stopped walking when a shot rang through his ears. He turned his gaze to the source of it and saw Chris holding out his smoking Glock as he had just killed a walker which was going after Lizzie.
The host of Total Drama moved over to Lizzie, checking if the girl was alright to which she responded with a nod of her head as Noah made his way over to them, "Chris. Gwen and Glenn are having an attack. I need to find one air bag."
"I think I know where to find one." Chris answered, "Layla."
Noah nodded, "This is exactly where I was heading."'
DJ brought Hershel back on his feet and the duo looked around themselves, seeing all of the walkers that came out of their cells and out of the corner of their eyes, they saw Noah, Chris and Lizzie heading towards one of the cells. It was when an idea popped into their minds. The guns that Dr. Stevens showed them earlier that day when they went into her cell to check on her could really help them to get out of this situation.
They walked over to the set of stairs and started making their way up, with DJ leading the group of two, heading to the upper level of the cellblock. It didn't took them long to get there and after that they headed straight to Dr. Stevens' cell, intending to get the guns she showed them as fast as possible.
"Anna. We need your guns." DJ said the moment he and Hershel reached the cell, but his eyes widened in suprise when Dr. Stevens lunged for him. His suprised expression was replaced with a saddened one when he realized that Dr. Stevens must have died without him and Hershel noticing it and had enough time to change into a walker.
The brickhouse let out a saddned sigh as he pulled out his knife and placed it in Dr. Stevens' brain, killing her off for good, before opening the cell. He knelt down in front of Dr. Stevens' bunk and reached under it. He quickly pulled out the box that she showed him and Hershel earlier that day as Hershel knelt down in front of him. DJ opened the box, giving himself and Hershel a good look at the shotguns inside.
They took the shotguns out of the box and started putting shells inside them while Chris, Noah, Lizzie had reached Layla's cell and were instantly greeted by the view of the said woman coming out of her cell, as a walker. Chris quickly aimed his Glock at her and fired. Layla's lifeless body collapsed on the ground like a ton of bricks as Chris and Noah rushed into her cell.
The two of them began searching through it and it was just a matter of seconds before one them found the airbag. Chris picked it up and turned to look at Noah who was still searching for it, "Noah." The bookworm turned to look at the host who threw the airbag to him, "Let's go to Glenn."
Noah nodded his head, tightening his grip around the airbag. They came out of the cell and started making their way towards Glenn, with Lizzie following them as Hershel and DJ came out of Dr. Stevens' cell, both of them wielding the shotguns they got from the box in ready. They pushed themselves into walk and started looking around themselves, trying to spot if there was any walker nearby.
They saw one walker coming up the stairs and DJ instantly reacted to that and aimed his shotgun at it, but did not fired it because Hershel placed his free hand on his shoulder. DJ looked at him and saw Hershel gesturing towards of the cells. Luke was looking at them from his cell. The brickhouse instantly knew what the farmer wanted to him to do.
They started backing away, with Hershel lightly slamming the end of his shotgun against the wall, trying to keep the undead's attention on him which was luckilly for them working. He and DJ took a few more steps backwards as the undead continued to follow them.
The farmer took another step backwards and gave DJ a quick look, saying, "I'll take care of this one. You go and take care of the others."
DJ nodded his head in response to Hershel's words and turned away from the farmer, before running away from him and the walker, intending to do exactly what Hershel told him to do.
"C'mon, Gwen." Cody said to Gwen in a very worried tone, as he continued to pump air into her lungs, "Don't die on me. You're stronger than this. You've been through worse things than this."
The geek turned his gaze away from Gwen and looked at Glenn who's state was becoming worse with each passing second. Cody shook his head in worry. Noah still hasn't returned with an air bag and he knew that Glenn was not going to live long if someone didn't start helping him. He wished he could do something about it, but he couldn't because he was already taking care of Gwen.
He looked away from Glenn and looked up when he heard someone enter the cell. He reached his free hand for his knife, excepting to be a walker, but much to his relief, it turned out to Noah with an airbag, and he wasn't alone. Chris and Lizzie were with him.
"It's good to see you, dude." Cody smiled at his friend to which Noah gave him a silent nod of his head in response. Noah knelt down in front of Glenn and started readying the air bag he brought with him, "Remember what DJ and Hershel told us. Roll him on his back."
"You don't need to remind me." Noah told him as he rolled Glenn on his back. He used his free hand to open his friends mouth, and was about to place the pipe in his mouth but was having problem with it because Glenn squirming as he was starting to turn blue. This problem thankfully went away when Chris knelt down next to Noah and held Glenn down, allowing the bookworm the put the pipe in his mouth. He started squeezing the bag, hoping that it was going to work, "C'mon, man. There's no way I'm going to tell your wife what happened to you tomorrow."
DJ cocked his shotgun as he was backing away from the three walkers after he made to earn their attention. He stopped walking once he felt how his back touched the wall. He aimed his shotgun at the first walker and fired it, hearing how the shell fell on the floor next to him. The walker was hit, but kept moving towards him. The brickhouse reloaded the shotgun and fired again, this time, killing the walker.
Another shell collapsed on the ground as DJ readied himself to take out another walker. He fired his shotgun again and fortunely for him, this time one shell was enough to get rid of the undead. He was about to take out the third one, but never had the chance to do so because someone else did that for him. He looked around, trying to spot the person that killed the walker and saw Maggie, Geoff, Ezekiel and Izzy rushing into the cellblock.
"DJ!" A relieved smile grew on Geoff's lips. He was just happy that his friend was alright.
"What happened here?" Izzy wanted to know.
"A few people changed into walkers." DJ explained, "Dr. Stevens was one of them. I had to put her down."
"Eh, how many of them are left?" Ezekiel asked, referring to the walkers.
"I don't know." DJ answered, "I and Hershel split up to take care of this problem faster than we would if we stayed together."
"DJ!" Hershel's voice came from the upper level of the cellblock, "How many of them did you killed."
"Three." DJ answered, as he looked up at Hershel, followed by everyone else, "You?"
"Three too." Hershel replied, "I think that's all of them."
"Daddy!" Maggie called out for her dad, earning her attention, "Where's Glenn?"
"He's up here." Hershel pointed in the direction of Glenn's cell, "Cell 100. Gwen should be with him."
Maggie nodded and instantly pushed herself into run towards the cell that her dad just mentioned. Everyone followed her and it was just a matter of time before everyone found themselves in front of the cell, and saw that the asian man laying on the floor, with Noah pumping air into his lungs. They weren't alone. Cody was doing the same to Gwen as Chris and Lizzie were watching them.
Noah looked up at them, "Glenn and Gwen had an attack. We had to pump some air into their lungs."
Hearing this information, Maggie quickly knelt down in front of Glenn, worried for her husband. Hershel and DJ followed her example, with the former going to check on his son-in-law and the latter going to check on the goth, wanting to be sure if Cody and Noah did everything properly. They did. Gwen and Glenn should make it out alive. Maggie looked at Noah with a grateful look on her face, grateful that he saved her husband as DJ patted Cody's on his shoulder.
"Is it over?" Lizzie asked, eyeing the people around her.
Chris placed his hand on her shoulder, "I hope so."
Rick, Chef and Carl were putting the tree branches against the fence to stop it from falling as the walkers were pilled in against it. Rick and Chef were holding the tree branch, making sure it was going to stay where they wanted it to while Carl was bringing the hammer down on a nail which was going to hopefully keep the branch in it's place once Chef and Rick will let go off it.
Carl looked up from his work at Rick and Chef, "Think they're okay?"
"If things were going bad, we would have heard more shots" Chef replied.
"Maggie or Izzy or Zeke or Geoff would have gotten us. We have to do this." Rick nodded his head to Chef's reply, as Carl finished what he was doing. The sheriff deputy and the co-host of Total Drama let go off the tree branch, hoping that it was going to stay in it's place and much to their relief, it did.
"I'll go get another one." Chef said, moving over to the tree branches which were laying on the ground a few yards ahead of them.
"Do you need any help?" Carl asked him.
"No." Chef shook his head, lifting up the tree branch and placed it on his shoulder, "I can handle th..."
Chef's words died in his throat when he saw how one of the branches was cracking and bending. Rick and Carl turned around and looked at the branch too before it completely snapped into pieces. More branches started snapping and the fence fell not long after that, allowing the walkers to enter the other side of the fence. Chef, Rick and Carl started running away from the undead.
The walkers started chasing Rick, Chef and Carl as the group of three got away from them as fast as they could. They ran over to the watch tower and made their through it, away from the undead's grasp, but the undead didn't paid much attention to that and started pilling themselves on another fence, which fell just a few seconds later.
The group of three ran into the yard and stopped in front of the boxes with all kinds of guns. They started readying themselves to take on the undead by themselves. They knew that they had to do something about it because it was just a matter of time before the undead would make their way into the yard and they didn't want that to happen.
Chef grabbed his M16 which he left there earlier that day and looked at Rick who was giving intructions to his son as the group of three started running towards the undead, intending to get closer to them.
"Magazine goes in here." Rick began giving intructions to Carl who was listening to everything his father had to say to him, "Release is here. Make sure it latches. Pull back the operating rod and rounds feed up. You shoot or you run. Don't let 'em get close, okay?"
Carl nodded his head as the group of three stopped a few yards away from the last fence that they undead needed to destroy to get to the yard. They aimed their guns at the fence, ready to use them at any moment just a few seconds before the last thing that was preventing the walkers from entering the yard finally fell down under the pressure and the undead started entering the yard.
The walkers started making their way towards Rick, Chef and Carl who opened fire at the undead. The walkers started falling down, one by one, as Chef, Rick and Carl didn't stop firing. The only time when they stopped firing was when they had to back away a bit, because the undead got a bit too much close to them, but despise that, the group of three stood their ground against the large group of the undead and it was just a matter of time before all of the walkers laid on the ground, dead.
After making sure that all of the walkers were dead, the group of three heard two cars driving towards the prison. They turned to the source of the noise and saw two cars, a minivan and the Buick Century to be exact, standing in front of the main gate which meant only one thing. Daryl and his group have returned from the supply run with the medication for their people.
"Dad." Carl spoke up to his father the moment he saw that Daryl's group had just returned from their mission, "Everything's gonna be okay."
He pushed himself into run towards the main gate as Rick and Chef ran over to the gate which was leading to the yard. Carl opened the main gate and let the supply group into the prison as Rick and Chef opened the gate to the yard, allowing them to drive through it. The supply group started getting themselves out of their vehicles, with Tyreese and Trent carrying all of the medication they gathered during their mission.
"Where's Sasha?" Tyreese asked Rick and Chef right after getting himself out of the minivan.
Rick shook his head, "I don't know. I'm sorry."
"Get in there." Daryl said to Tyreese and Trent, getting himself out of the vehicle, "We got this."
Tyreese and Trent started making their way towards the A block right after hearing Daryl's words, making sure to not drop any of the bags they were carrying.
"What the hell happened here?" Oscar asked as he set his gaze on the corpses of the walkers that Rick, Chef and Carl just killed right after after exiting his vehicle.
Chef shook his head, "A lot."
The morning after everything that happened in the A block and with the fence, Rick splashed his face with the water from the barrel as Michonne, Eva and Izzy were cleaning up the bodies of the walkers that broke through the fence last night and placing them on the trunk of the blue truck.
He turned to look at them, "Need some help with that?"
"Do your thing." Izzy added with Eva nodding head to that.
Rick nodded his head at them and walked through the opened gate, beginning to make his way down to the fields as Carl ran up to him, "You didn't wake me up."
"I thought I'd let you sleep in." Rick responded, turning to look at his son.
"I should help." Carl said, stopping next to his dad.
"Good." Rick nodded, "I've got to go talk to Daryl and Duncan."
"Right now?" Carl asked him.
"No." Rick shook his head, "Soon. Soon."
They started making their way towards the farm as another truck with Tyreese, Alejandro, Duncan and Daryl inside drove into the yard, returning from whatever they were doing on the other side of the fence. The group of four got themselves out of the truck and looked at Hershel and DJ who approached them.
Tyreese looked at them, "How are Glenn and Gwen doing?"
"They made it through the night. He's breathing on his own now." Hershel replied.
"Maggie, Bridge and Bob are with them." DJ added, "They seem stable enough for me to get some air."
"They are tough as nails." Daryl stated.
Hershel nodded, "They are."
Daryl pointed at Hershel and DJ, "You two are two tough son of a bitches."
"We are." Hershel nodded, beginning to walk away from them with DJ.
"How about Carol?" Daryl asked them, "She up in A block with Lizzy?"
"No. You and Duncan should to Rick about her." Hershel explained as Daryl and Duncan looked at him in confusion, "She's okay, just talk to him."
Duncan patted DJ on his shoulder, his confused expression still on his face, "Talk to you later, man."
DJ nodded his head at his friend as Daryl, Duncan, Tyreese and Alejandro walked away from them to do their own thing. Hershel and DJ started walking along the yard and spotted Izzy and Eva walking away from Michonne. They must have just finished putting the bodies in the trunk of the blue truck.
"Hey, DJ." DJ turned to the source of the voice and saw Chef walking towards him and Hershel, "Mind if I talk with you for a second?"
DJ exchanged a look with Hershel before approaching Chef, "What is it?"
"I just want to say that I'm proud of you." Chef went straight to the point as Hershel went to talk with Michonne, "You risked your life for the people of this group without second thoughts."
"I just did what had to be done." DJ stated, shrugging his shoulders, "People were dying in the A block and I couldn't let them just die when I was out here, perfectly fine."
"It still doesn't change the fact that you risked your life for our people." Chef pointed out, "Who knows how many people would die if you and Hershel didn't help them. You saved a lot of lives by staying in the A block and didn't even think that you might die while doing so. I'm sure that your mother would be proud of you if she saw you right now."
DJ smiled at Chef when he heard those words, "I hope you're right, Chef. Thank you for saying this."
Chef returned his smile and offered DJ a salute. DJ, not really knowing to how react to this, returned this gesture and saluted in return.
"Hey, DJ." Hershel's voice called out for the brickhouse. DJ and Chef turned to look at him and saw the farmer sitting inside the blue truck with Michonne, "I and Michonne are heading out to leave those bodies in the forest. Want to come with us?"
DJ nodded his head in response, "Sure thing."
"Are you sure?" Chef asked the brickhouse, "I think you should rest after everything that happened in the last few days."
DJ gave him an assuring nod of his head, "I'll be alright Chef. I'll rest once we'll return, I promise."
"You better." Chef smiled at him, "You and Hershel deserve it more than anyone."
DJ returned Chef's smile, before turning around to look at the blue truck. He walked over to the vehicle and got himself into it. The blue truck drove off and left the prison, heading into the woods.
Michonne, Hershel and DJ reached their destination a few minutes later. The place didn't really stand out from the rest of the forest. It was just a small field which was surrounded by the trees. There was only one thing that stood out about this place. A lot of lifeless bodies of the walkers that were brought there by the group from the prison were laying there.
The group of three got themselves out of the truck and went to work right away. DJ and Michonne started taking the bodies off the trunk and putting them on the ground, next to the other bodies as Hershel watched them. They continued to do their work for the next few minutes, while having a conversation with each other, all three of them smilling.
They were unaware that someone was watching them...
The Governor and Jose Burromuerto stood just several meters away from them, hidden among the bushes, watching the group of three from the distance.
The Governor and Jose have returned...
We're done with the flu arc! In the early stages of this story, I was planning to kill one of the TD characters during this arc (I won't reveal who it was, at least right now), but ultimately I scrapped that idea and let that character survive this arc.
Hope it wasn't that bad. See you in another chapter.
