A blue light glowed as Sasuke set down the last rock, marking the boundaries of the barrier he'd made. "Now no one can interrupt us," he spoke softly, sitting himself down on the grass. At the back of his mind he remembered that it was ill mannered to stand upon a grave, but he didn't think Naruto would mind. The idiot never had been one for etiquette.
"I hate you," he told the headstone tonelessly, barely feeling the cold seeping into his bones. He'd been numb ever since Naruto's death. "You knew it would happen this way. You made sure that Tsunade-sama sent me on a mission. I didn't even get to see you before you were buried."
He'd returned to grieving faces, a new grave and an empty house. The villagers condolences fell on deaf ears, Sasuke didn't want to hear them. They didn't know what he knew, that Naruto had planned to sacrifice himself all along in the hopes of somehow making up for the damage caused by the demon sealed in his stomach. They didn't know that on the table in their home, Naruto had left a letter saying he was sorry.
"Were you that desperate to beat me that you had to die first?" he asked, tracing his finger along the words on the stone. He didn't know what it said; he hadn't cared to look past Naruto's name. "You promised you'd never leave me alone, you bastard," and that was worst of all, because the blonde had known he was lying even as he said it.
"But I'm not going to let you go back on your word." With one last caress of the stone he pulled back, reaching down to his leg for a kunai. He could hear someone shouting behind him, but he ignored it. It was just Sakura, and she wouldn't be able to break through the barrier. He'd promised Naruto they wouldn't be interrupted.
"There's nothing for me here now," he said sadly, placing the weapon to his wrist. In the background Sakura was screaming, telling him to stop being stupid, to not do it. He did it anyway, ignoring the pain. She didn't understand. With Naruto gone had had nothing to live for. He watched curiously as his blood fell to the ground, wondering if it'd seep through the earth into Naruto's coffin. That would be nice.
He lay down, curling himself around the gravestone. "I'm not going to let you win," he murmured, eyes falling shut. With a smile on his face and a blonde idiot grinning in his mind's eye, Uchicha Sasuke died.
