The process of designing a new outfit based on her game character was a bit easier than she thought. Namely as there were a variety of things present to help make it happen. And the tailor was a rather clever lady.
They'd spent awhile discussing it, while Chara took a minute to draw down an idea of what she was after. The two adults surprised to find she was fairly capable at doing so. And then, came the creation process, and the following, most important step.
Chara finished getting the base of her outfit on. Sliding on her new boots. Tightening the straps on her gloves. Straightening her shirt, before tossing something overtop of it, and herself. Looking over her reflection in a mirror that had been provided to her. She paused, examining the fake horns, placing back onto her head, while tugging on her hood.
Meanwhile, the tailor leaned against her counter. Sorting out the money she'd acquired from the transaction. A slightly less than pleased skeleton watching, as each individual G was slid into the register. Wincing at the amount. He felt...much lighter in the wallet than he'd originally intended.
"You know, you never struck me as the parental type, Papyrus." The woman remarked, as he glanced. "So, relative, or temporary ward I'm guessing?"
Papyrus considered the excuse. "She is a niece, of mine."
"Sans had kids?" The woman inquired. "Hmm, guess that isn't too surprising. He's pretty funny."
"No. Believe it or not, I do have friends who are close enough to me, to be considered family." He noted back. "She is one of theirs."
"Awh, look at you being all paternal." She remarked. "Responsibility looks good on you, Paps."
Papyrus let out a huff. "You're not getting more G from me. You do know that right?"
"Oh c'mon. I could do some alterations to that jacket of yours." She offered. "I'd even offer a discount."
"After the mark-up, I'm sure." He smirked some, while she chuckled.
"Oh, c'mon, you could use a touch up." Baylor inquired. "I heard you had a date with someone awhile back. Ya wanna impress don't cha?" He blushed some. "Come to think of it, I've never heard how it went?"
"I-it wasn't a date. It was a social interaction, of a sort. I don't do dating." Papyrus stated with his usual bravado, noticing her doubtful look. "We met up and talked for a while. Hung out. Nothing transpired beyond that."
"That is...literally a date Paps." She noted.
"Nothing happened that would prompt it to be considered a date by common standards." He replied in a fluster. "We merely met up with one another. Talked about work, life, the usual things. Then we got something to eat and went for a nice walk after."
"Papyrus, that is still, literally, a date." She remarked, getting a glare. "Look, was it the same as hanging out with your brother?"
"No. It was different." He stated. "Obviously."
"Was it the same as hanging out with me, or your various goons?" Baylor asked, and he didn't reply, just scowling some. "Yeah, that's what I thought. But, whatever...did you two have fun at least?"
"I thought so. Evidently not though." He noted, shifting some. "I've...not gotten called back, or anything."
"Ouch. Sorry." She apologized. "So, who was it?" She pried. "Give me the deetz."
"No." He spoke. "I don't date and tell."
"So, it was a date." She smirked, the skeleton growling some.
The door to the changing room opened, Chara stepping out. She turned, to look over the pair of them. They in turn, got a look at her. With her new outfit, which was a little bit different to the last one.
To begin, her gloves had some padding added to them, so they'd be more durable, and pack a bit more of a punch. Baylor the Tailor reasoned it never hurt to have good mana flow, and practical combat gloves. Chara, for her part, felt awful modifying them at all. But, refused to replace them when prompted to do so.
Her general clothes were now a bit altered. Wearing a new pair of grey pants that fit better, with nice deep pockets. Accompanying it was white shirt with a purple stripe around the center. Her boots, black with purple laces through them. Giving her base outfit a bit of a bleak appearance, minus the colored laces and stripe. The purple tinted to match her eyes.
The remainder of her outfit was far more colorful, in the same sense the stripe and laces were. Vibrant, albeit dark purples. Which came in the presences of a long purple poncho, which went down to her knees. Emblazoned on the back, with the Deltarune. The symbol present in white, appearing almost like wings given their size.
Unfortunately, the hat was still a work in progress. Apparently, it would have to be specially made. So, until then, her poncho had a nice hood that had a zig-zaggy point, which drooped at the end.
Chara smiled some and asked. "What do you think?"
"Who is this, who stands before me?" Papyrus inquired. "Ah, it must be that very talented, magical caster, Chara." He said, in his villainous voice. "You can tell, just by appearance, she is capable of constructing grand floating castles, and complicated, daring puzzles."
Chara laughed warmly at this suggestion, the skeleton smiling some. "Thanks, I-I can only do a couple spells though. Nothing that cool."
"Oh?" He hummed. "I wasn't aware you had any."
"One is kinda dangerous." She admitted. "But the other is...well it's kinda neat, I guess?"
"Hmm, what's wrong little caster?" Baylor leaned against the counter. "Nobody's taught you how to control them?"
"Uhm...well no." She admitted. "Is that...important?"
Baylor and Papyrus exchanged glances. "Tell you what, why don't you show us one."
"That sounds dangerous." Chara hesitated. "It'll end up hurting one of you."
Papyrus contemplated this, suggesting. "Then try one on me." He gave a confident grin. "I'm quite durable, I assure you. So long as you aren't trying to kill me, I don't wager it will be much of a problem."
Admittedly, he had not heard of a human with magic. He was also rather uncertain how strong such a spell cast by one might be. But he prepared himself for it anyways. The child looked at their expecting faces and let out a hesitant sigh. Taking a moment, to hold out her hand.
Chara cast |S-Butterfly|
The first purple butterfly manifested in her palm. Glowing, wings flapping. It was a brilliant shine.
Then, others began to manifest around it. A total of five growing present. Her expression still bearing a concerned look. She didn't want them to get hurt, after all.
The first fluttered forth, pausing briefly, before slamming against Papyrus. She jumped some, at the sound it made when it impacted. A little burst of purple light exploding from it. The others rapidly following suit.
One, turned, and darted towards the vendor. Baylor for her part, just smirked a little as it got nearby. Bursting before it could even touch her. Chara was surprised to see that happen. Did she...have some kind of protection magic?
"S-sorry!" The girl quickly apologized. "Are you okay?"
Papyrus dusted off the impact spot. "Why are you apologizing?" He asked. "We were curious to see your capabilities. And for the record, you did a great job. A seeking spell is quite useful. It is best used alongside another attack, to force the enemy into colliding with it."
Chara noticed that he didn't seem to be injured in any real fashion. And Baylor had avoided the hit, rather easily actually. She felt relieved at that.
The Tailor smirked some. "Not bad kid. Even got a shine purple to it." She pondered. "You got a soul power?"
"Soul power?" She asked.
"Here, try it again, we'll find out." Baylor suggested.
Chara attempted, but nothing happened. "I-it didn't...I'm sorry. I can't. I've only been able to cast after a fight. It seems to recharge when a hit gets close to me."
"That's cuz you have TP, kid." Baylor noted.
Papyrus noticed her confusion. "TP, and MP are...different. One is obtained through conflict, or the act of defending oneself." He pondered, saying. "Observe."
He motioned, as a massive red bone formed in his hand. Blocking the space before him. She watched curiously. - Chara learned to |Defend|
"Even though all monsters have mana-" Baylor chimed in. "only a few folks aside from boss monsters have Mana Points."
"So..." Chara frowned. "I'm not...a mage?"
"Pshh, that don't mean nothin." She replied. "There are plenty of mages who used TP. I don't remember the term but-"
"The term is Battle Mage." Papyrus responded. "They are able to perform certain magics but require 'Tension Points' to cast them." He hummed. "I'm aware that your attacks are more...physically grounded, correct?" She nodded. "In that case, what we'd call that spell is a 'Special Attack,' if we wanted to be technical." He noted. "Though for all intents and purposes it would be a spell.. Like my brothers teleporting."
"Sans is a mage?" The girl groaned, of course he was. "W-wait, I have one." She smiled. "It...makes me harder to hit. That's just...a normal spell, right?"
"It sounds like one." Papyrus remarked. "I'll have to give you a proper rundown at some point or provide you a training manual perhaps." He hummed. "But that is the basic of it."
"So...I can get it back by defending?" She asked. "Any...other way?"
Baylor noted. "Sleeping usually. There's some stuff that'll regain you TP too. Foods, drinks. But it's usually pretty expensive."
"And...soul powers?" She asked.
"Eh, Papyrus has one. I'm sure he can teach you about it." The tailor suggested. "Should be the same as his brothers, actually."
Chara immediately knew what a soul power was. And was surprised to now know that Papyrus had that same ability. That blue soul thing. She was...not of fan of having it used against her. Even still, the prospect of learning that...if she could even learn it, was very tempting.
She looked to him expectantly. The skeleton somewhat regretted that the tailor had said something about that. Soul powers were...dangerous, in many respects. Hard to come by, and difficult to teach. Sometimes with disastrously negative effects, when used improperly.
With all that said, were she a monster, the tint of her magic would be an indication of the presence of such an ability or power, merely being manifested improperly. However, he had no idea what it meant when a human did it. Though, he had seen the shine of her soul. It too, was purple, much like her eyes were. So, perhaps it was just...a side-effect?
"We shall...see about that." Papyrus sighed some, and noted. "Well, we must be off. Say goodbye, Chara."
Chara registered this. "Oh, uhm, right, heh." She turned to the tailor. "It was nice to meet you."
"Look at the manners on this one." Baylor smiled some. "Nice to meet you too kiddo. You two have fun, okay?"
She hoped that they would, though, she also wasn't sure what else they were meant to be doing today. Her thoughts going back, every now and then, to her mother. The concern ever present, even with the present misadventures.
The pair stepped outside, Chara closing the door behind them. The wind brushing across her, causing the purple poncho to wave some as it went. Her attention falling on Papyrus, who had started back down the staircase. She followed along with him, and noticed he appeared to be thinking. At least, that's what she figured he was doing. Given that he had that serious expression he often had while doing so.
For his part, he was. Papyrus was considering a great many things. Some personal conflicts, and various questions about what to do next. Him and Sans hadn't properly agreed on anything yet. Though, his brother had suggested taking the human to Alphys. He himself, wasn't entirely certain on that course of action.
"Chara, please stay close." Papyrus took out his phone. "I have to call my brother about some things."
"Do you...have to?" She asked.
"I've noticed you don't seem to like him much." Papyrus commented, adding. "He's not a bad guy, if that's what you're worried about. A bit lazy, perhaps. But he was the one who notified me you had passed out in the snow."
Chara couldn't really debate that. She didn't know why the shorter skeleton had done it. Did he have some strange goal in mind? Was her dying there somehow a problem? It hadn't been the other times, when he'd pushed her into a spike pit. However, no matter how much she tried to...she couldn't seem to get the voice in the phone out of her mind. It felt like...sounded like...scratching.
Glancing over at the sound of a phone ringing, it appeared Papyrus was calling. She made a note to talk to him about her mother. Hoping to get help finding her once that call was done. Now that she had a proper bit of battle armor, it felt like the next logical choice. After all, if she could get Papyrus to help, she was sure to find Toriel in no time.
She followed along with Papyrus, following that train of thought, despite her attempts not to. It seemed he had gotten ahold of Sans after-all. She sighed some, falling a little bit behind him. Wondering...debating with herself.
She imagined if she was going to, now was the best time to run away from him. This prompted her to wonder if he would honestly care if she just headed out right now? Probably not, honestly.
He likely just felt bad, because she almost froze herself to death waiting for Flowey. Her face expressing some sorrow. She wondered what all she did wrong, that he hadn't come back?
Did he know she was just trying to joke with him, when she was being insulting? Was it because she wasn't funny enough? Was she going too slow? Her heartbeat got faster. It was probably because she was a freak, who smelled like bad dreams, that everyone ran away from.
Her mind turned to Papyrus. He would probably hate her too, if she told him about his brother. How could he believe her? Flowey didn't even believe her. Her anxiety began to spike. Tension mounting, as shadows shifted behind her.
"I don't think he'd hate you." A voice said, from behind her.
She jumped in surprise. Turning, eyes glowing with light. Coming to face the speaker.
As it turned out, the speaker was a kid. In-particular, the strange monochrome kid she'd seen early. A lizard-like monster, with pale dead eyes, and a grey striped poncho. He was smiling some at her.
"D-dude, you scare me!" She told him, breathing hard, placing a hand over her heart. "Don't do..." His comment registered. "Wait, what'd you say?"
"You looked distressed." The monochrome kid laughed some. "It's cuz you're worried he's gonna hate you for something, right?"
She laughed nervously. "Was it...that obvious?"
"A little bit. But no worries, I get the same expression sometimes." The other kid scanned her. "Hey, as a note, I really like your poncho."
"You do?" She managed a smile. "Thanks, we just got it, actually." She glanced around. "Not gonna hang out with your...sibling?"
"Brother. And no." The odd kid shrugged. "He's hangin out with friends. Figured I'd enjoy some me time, thinkin about stuff."
"That's fair." She rubbed her arm, feeling bad at having been worried. "I'm Chara."
"That's a neat name." He replied. "Nice to meet'cha. And, I mean, it's not that nice, honestly." He sighed. "It's more...alone time cuz I'm not feeling to great, ya know?"
Chara gave a weak smile. "Y-yeah. I get that. Are you alright?"
"It's, dumb. It's just...I dunno, you wouldn't believe me." He replied.
"Oh c'mon, you can't say something like that." She chuckled. "Now I have to ask."
He glanced at a nearby alleyway. "Okay, so get this. I was walking around, when I came across a weird door. But nobody else seems to see it."
"Really?" She asked. "Like...they're ignoring it, or?"
"No, like. I've led them right to it. And nothing." The strange kid commented. "They keep looking at me like I'm crazy."
Chara turned, glancing at the direction that Papyrus had gone. He had stopped, and appeared to be arguing with whoever was on the other line. It was definitely Sans. She hummed a little anxiously. Turning back to the strange kid.
"Where is this magical door?" She asked, adding. "I am a qualified witch after all."
"You do look like a mage." He noted, asking. "Oh, is that why the hood is zig-zaggy?"
"Yes!" She laughed some. "Dude, you have no idea how worried I was people wouldn't get that."
"I am pretty sharp." He noted, adding. "And it's over here, actually."
He stepped over towards a nearby alleyway. Pausing and tilting his head to gesture her over. Chara walked along with him. Heading down the alley slightly, to where a small corner was present. He stopped in front of it.
"See?" He asked.
She glanced past her counterpart, a little surprised to see that...there was a strange door there. It was...big, bigger then the space appeared to permit in some odd fashion. Bulky, grey, and colorless. She placed a hand against it, and her soul briefly shone before her. The human panicking, while stepping back. Quickly trying to hide it.
Glancing over, her companion hadn't seemed to notice. Being that he was squinting at a section of the door, with his back turned. She internally growled at her soul. Telling it to 'shh.'
Chara glanced past her counterpart, and down the alleyway. She hadn't noticed it when they were first coming through, but there was a strange grey door there now. Somehow?
"I don't...remember seeing this?" She noted in confusion.
"No way...you can see it to?" He laughed a little. "Most people treat me like I'm crazy when I tell them about it."
Chara was confused by that. "I mean...it's a weird grey door." She noted "It's kinda hard to miss?"
"You think so?" He asked. "Well, try and tell someone, watch. You'll see what I mean."
As per his request, she decided to test the theory. Wandering out, inviting a few people to follow her into a dark alley. Understandably there weren't a lot of takers. And one guy who seemed enthused, only to get nervous and leave when she mentioned she wanted to ask Papyrus to check it out.
She did manage to ask a couple other kids to check it out though, but one by one, they claimed to see nothing. One even getting upset about their time being wasted. Leaving in a huff. It became unnerving at that point. What the heck was it?
"I told you. They can't see it." He spoke. "It's weird."
"So, why can we?" She asked.
"I dunno. I couldn't see it at first, honestly." He admitted. "It only showed up, when I started to think about stuff."
"What were you thinking about?" Chara asked.
"Have you ever thought about a world where everything is exactly the same.." He began. "Except you don't exist?" He laughed nervously. "Everything functions perfectly without you...Ha, ha... The thought terrifies me."
Chara hadn't been prepared to deal with that thought. Especially as it hit...very close to some things in the back of her mind. A chilly breath escaping her lips, the nip in the air was a bit cooler than before.
"Sometimes." She admitted.
"And then...there it was." He said, adding. "I'm going to go check it out."
"That sounds like a bad idea." Chara noted.
"Maybe neither of us should. But we've seen it, so that's not really an option huh?" The kid examined it. "The curiosity, the need to know. I have to proceed."
Chara felt alarmed. "H-hey, we should go get Papyrus. He's really strong, and I bet he could help?"
The kid snickered. "I doubt it."
The door began to creak open. Chara taking a step back. Her heart racing, as the strange kid stepped inside. Doors shutting after him. The pounding noise became all she could hear. Fear, indecision, they gripped her. What did she do, what did she do?
She mustered the will to persevere and rushed at the door. Knocking it open. Only to be greeted by...a strange sight. The doors slamming shut behind her.
