This is my first les mis fic in a while. Not sure of the quality so comments and tips are more than welcome. Sorry this chapter is so short. Next one is longer.

Disclaimer: Shockingly enough i don't own les mis. i own the character of Adèle and later on Amélie but sadly that is all :(

Fantine sat on the mattress in her empty room, running an old comb through her hair and watching as the sputtering candle lighting the room, cast eerie shadows against the adjecent wall.

"F…Fantine…" The voice was gentle, timid even but was enough to startle Fantine. She jumped to her feet and span around to face the open door. Her face creased into a concerned frown at the sight that met her. Huddled in the doorway, clutching pitifully at her stomach was a young girl, no older than her late teens. All Fantine remembered of the girl was her name Adèle . And the fact she has worked at the factory when she arrived in Montriel-Sur-Mer. But in the past six months it had been as though the girl had vanished. In the beginning, of course, rumours had spread through the factory like wildfire. But as far as Fantine knew no one had seen or heard of her since. And in all honest her existence had been wiped out of Fantine's mind. In spite of this, the sight of her made her heart constrict in pity.

"Adèle what on earth is.."

Before Fantine could finish her sentence, Adèle's legs gave in under her and her weak body clattered to the ground, causing nothing more than a faint whimper of pain to elicit from her.

With a gasp of fright Fantine called down to her old neighbour Margueritte and ordered her to fetch a doctor quickly. She ran to Adèle and crouched on the dusty floor, supporting her until she was upright again, though her body remained hunched, bent double in pain. Despite knowing nothing of this poor child, Fantine's heart was almost bursting out of chest with worry as she knelt by her side. Her skin was layered with a shimmering sheet of fevered sweat and her gauntly beautiful features were twisted in pain. Determination to help her suddenly stuck Fantine. For she would wish for the same should, God-forbid, someone find her beloved Cosette in the dreadful state in the years to come. She rose onto her knees and very gently praised Adèle's hands away from her stomach. A feeling of cold dread washed over her as she stared down at the girls swollen stomach protruding from her otherwise painfully thin body, confirming her fears.

With a motherly hand, Fantine moved the hair back from Adèle's face "Adèle .." She said in a soft whisper "Do you know how far along you are, my dear?"

In response, she rolled onto her side and began to cough violently, the sheer impact causing her frail body to convulse. Horror stricken, Fantine watched as a small stream of crimson blood meandered through the Adèle's trembling lips. When the coughs eventually began to subside Adèle simply wiped the blood from her mouth and fell back against the bed with an exhausted moan. All Fantine could do was watch over her helplessly and pray the Doctor would arrived soon and take the pitiful creature to a place where she could be nursed back into health. If she could be nursed back into health. And with each moment that passed, the chance of this seemed to fade before Fantines eyes
