Chapter Five

Story: Detour to Boston

10th May 2019

The first half of the year almost came to an end.

Emily was again cleared for work, although barely.

Garcia and Morgan found a house and JJ was in her fifth month of pregnancy.

Also, the Hotchners chose May to start with the adoption process, which can take up to 12 months. It was quite a huge step for them, and they searched on the internet on how to proceed with adopting a child.

Sure, an agency would give more exact answers to their questions, but they didn't want to choose an agency out of the blue. Exactly the same as what the internet said and, in the end, they decided to do some more research about the whole process before starting.

Last week they finished their latest Case. It was in Boston. A part of Emily. She had lived there for around five years as she was a child.

The same night the case was finished she got a call. Janie the caller ID read. It was Emily's best friend. One friend from her childhood never let her go. They spontaneously had contact. Not often but enough to keep themselves updated.

"Hello, Janie!" Emily talked into the phone.

They were in their Motel rooms. Emily was with Hotch.

Before their marriage, they set the ground rule of no room sharing. Which they held themselves onto. But after Emily changed her name to Hotchner it didn't matter anymore. JJ was alone the same as Dave. Reid shared with Morgan.

"Hello Em, heard you're in town," Jane said.

The last time they talked was probably at the end of last year. Before she married Hotch.

"You want to meet up at the dirty robbers?" Emily asked and Jane agreed.

She was thinking if she should take Hotch with her or not.

"Don't think Emily, just do!" Jane said and chuckled.

"Okay, in half an hour?" she asked.

"Yeah, works for me," Jane said and both hung up.

She turned towards Hotch who was on the phone with Jack. She got up and walked over to him. She slung her arms around him and lied her head on his shoulder.

She loved moments like this. Just the two of them.

No case, no friends, no Jack. She loved her job, as gruesome as he is, her friends, as noisy as they are and she loved Jack, as loud as he sometimes might be. But these moments were gold to her. She could hear Jack happily talking through the phone, talking about his day.

She already had talked to him before so as Jack finished telling his stories and said goodbyes to his dad Aaron hung up. Turning around he took Emily in his arms.

"You come with me? I'm meeting Jane in less than half an hour." She asked.

She would love to have him with her, but it still was his decision and she would accept it either way. That's what makes their relationship this strong.

"Sure honey!" he said, never would he let her go alone to a bar.

He trusted Jane because he knew she was a cop in Boston's Nr.1 Homicide department. But it always was his duty to protect her. He would always feel guilty if anything would have happened.

Ten minutes later they left for the bar. Hand in Hand. It would be the first time for Jane and Hotch to meet each other. He had heard many stories about their childhood and looked forward to meeting her.

Dirty Robbers

"Jane!" Emily said after coming in and finding her at the bar.

They shared a big hug and afterward, Emily also greeted Maura. Stepping back Emily began to introduce her husband.

"Baby, this is the famous Jane Rizzoli and her best friend/ co-worker Maura Isles, Nr. 1 Medical Examiner in Massachusetts. Jane, Maura, this is Aaron Hotchner. My husband." Emily said smiling brightly. Hotch shook each women's hand.

"You never told us about having married," Jane said and Emily could see the disappointed look.

"Only since January. It was only me and him and his son. The big wedding will follow soon. Right Aaron?" She explained glancing at her husband.

The little ceremony was beautiful, but Emily wanted to have her friends and family there. But they hadn't had time for the big wedding just yet.

"She's right. One Saturday morning I just lead her to the town hall and married her. We will have a wedding in a church, so our family and friends can be a part of it." He said as they sat down.

They chatted further about the couple, about Jack, and different things. They had a good time.

At eight, the couple had to leave to be punctual back at the motel to meet the team. First, they wanted to go to a restaurant but decided against it. They didn't want to dress up, so they decided to let Chinese food deliver and enjoy the night in the biggest room.

As soon as they reached their motel room Emily was on her tablet. She went on and searched for fanfiction. She was late, but the case consumed time and she hadn't had any idea.

But now she had it and while Hotch cleaned up their room and made the go bags ready she saved the fanfiction on her device. Five minutes later it knocked and the other team members entered the room, as Hotch and Emily's room was the biggest. The ladies took the bed while the rest sat in the chairs they took from the other rooms.

They talked about various things. Catching up about the kids or different things. They had fun and enjoyed the time. They were lucky to have a team like this and they wanted to stay this close, always.

Taking some food on her chopsticks Garcia asked for the fanfiction. Emily swallowed and gave her cardboard to JJ and took her tablet from the nightstand opening the saved file.

"Sometimes I ask myself how they know so many things about us. But the story is good, even great and I really appreciate the length. It's not too long and not too short. These are the parts I enjoyed the most."

She jogs up the steps of Boston Police Department Headquarters. Once Emily, her badge, and gun make it through security, she sees a refreshingly familiar face in the station cafe. Angela Rizzoli. The woman is organizing cookies in the countertop pastry window.

"Any M&M and chocolate chip?" Emily asks as she makes her way into the empty cafe.

Angela's head shoots up at the voice. She lets out a surprised shriek at seeing the profiler. As soon as Emily makes it to the counter, Angela pulls her across the counter into a hug. A smile springs up on Emily's face at Angela's excitement."

After the questioning stares, she explained. "It's about me and my best friend from Childhood. She actually lives here in Boston. Aaron and I met her a few hours ago. If you won't mind I continue." She said the last part with a smirk.

"

As she nears the homicide bullpen entrance, she hears Jane groan, "Ugh, Ma says she has a surprise for me." Jane's back is to the entrance, facing Korsak and Frost.

"That's typically Jane. She loves and cares a lot for her mom but sometimes she really is annoyed with her. Jane is a childhood friend of mine." Emily explained why exactly she chose this story.

"It's nice that she wants to surprise you, Jane. You really should be more appreciative," Maura says from her perch against Jane's desk.

"This is her best friend and she is the Nr1 Medical Examiner in Massachusetts. Her name is Maura Isles."

"Yeah, Jane," Emily says entering the bullpen. "Especially, when that surprise is your best friend."

Everyone in the room turns at Emily's voice. "Yeah, well, Maura's standing right here, so, not that big of a surprise," Jane says with a smirk from her chair.

Emily punches Jane's shoulder. "Ass." She feels the sting of her wound when she reaches to the other side of the desk and touches Maura's arm, "Hey, Maura."

The Dirty Robber

"Profiler." Emily narrows her eyes at Jane in a playful challenge.

Jane gives a disbelieving chuckle. "You can't keep anything from me. Never could. You're almost as bad as Maura, Em."

She really knows me well. I know her since Kindergarten.

"You can't keep anything from me either," Emily accused.

"He had a gun, of course," Emily laughs bitterly. "He was angry we took his best friend. He was there, angry and concerned about the UnSub, and his 'friend' was running his mouth about how everything was this kid's idea. We knew it wasn't. I was talking him down. I really thought I was, but then he asked—." Emily smacks her fist down on the table. "He raised the gun, Jay, and I had to—He was fourteen." Emily rubs at her eyes to deter the tears building up behind them.

Emily and Jane each take gulps of their beer. Jane knew this was hard. A kid dying from a crime was hard, incredibly hard, but a kid dying by your own gun? That was painful on an incomparable level. You wish it had been you to take the bullet to spare the child's young life.

"…and yes, this actually happened in a similar way. "

"I'm going to tell you something. And you're going to hate it," Jane starts. "But I'm going to say it anyway, because you said it to me, and you were right." Jane makes sure to look her friend right in the eye. "You did nothing wrong, Emily."

"Wait, what is that?" Jane says. "Do you have a special someone back in DC?" Jane teases.

Emily types out a quick message and then replaces the phone in her pocket. "Careful, Janie, you're turning into your mother," Emily teases back.

"Shut up. I'm just an oh-so-curious friend. Come on, tell me."

"Fine. Yes."

You know all who I wrote to because this isn't revealed in the story.

"Is this Ma-safe information? You know she'll ask, but I just want to know if I'll be throwing you under the bus or not when I deflect her mentions of my relationship.

Emily laughs. "Sure. I think it's my turn to be thrown into the Angela fire."

"Angela fire is pretty accurate. We love her but with questions like these it really is like you would be throwing yourself under a bus."

"Damn right. Last time, you ratted me out and then ran away to DC." Jane looks at her watch. "We should head to the house. Ma and Maur should be about done with dinner."

"Let's go. I'm starving."

The two brunettes settle their bills and then head out. Emily actually feels a little better after her talk with Jane about what transpired.

Heading to Boston was definitely a good idea. Her team was great and she trusted them, but they were too close to what happened today. Seeing Jane and Maura and Angela was a welcome break. While she knew they were all concerned, the magnitude of their concern compared to the team's was less. She needed to process what happened without the constant concerned glances. Here in Boston, they let her deal on her own terms. And she was grateful for that. She was grateful for all the years, all the trust, and all the love between her and her Boston family.

"I hope this wasn't too much, but I really enjoyed reading this." She finished her telling. The team had so many questions they had towards Emily about Jane.

"When will we meet her?" JJ asked curios. Any friend of her friend will most likely be a friend of hers too.

"At our wedding," Emily said and everyone looked at them shocked. They knew the couple was married and they were hurt after they knew about it because they couldn't celebrate with them. But they never mentioned a big wedding.

"Yes, we are doing a big wedding. We owe you this all." Hotch explained and the expression soften.

Emily feared about any wedding planning things from JJ or Garcia but luckily it didn't come.

Some minutes the team members left for their own rooms and everyone almost immediately fell asleep after their night routine. They would fly back to DC early in the morning.
