Chapter 5

Strange…

KID is being strange...

It was the first time he had ever seen KID look so serious and immersed as he applied himself to cracking the grand impenetrable safe from the Bakumatsu Era; the Iron Tanuki. But what was strange was the sight of his back, open and unguarded, as if he had no interest in fighting anyone. Even ignoring their usual song and dance as Conan exposed his disguise and tricks.

"Oi… that looks complicated," Conan frowned a bit in concern, "Do you need my help?"

The only reason he could think to find the infallible thief this vulnerable meant he had difficulty with the safe. Samizu's craft is only tricky because of the death trap equipped in his work, but it should still be doable for the likes of him.

But KID kept working on the safe with the calmness and precision of a professional safe-cracker while warning him off the few booby traps in place. (Though giving him a heart attack with that arrow shot was unnecessary in his opinion). Conan found it weird that the magician doesn't seem to be wary of him, which kind of threw the detective off his game a little.

'Don't… don't tell me KID actually trust me?' Conan boggled at the disguised maid like he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Sure they had times where they made unofficial truces, but that was during a life-and-death situation. And the last time they met, Conan cornered him into an impromptu escape.

('Err, well, Samizu's work can be considered life-and-death.' Conan thought after KID pulled him from getting chopped up by the skin of his teeth.)

'Not like I am going to capture him anyway.' Since KID was practically invited to the mansion and his intention was innocent, there's no reason for the detective to catch the guy. Furthermore, he didn't disguise or knock out any of his people, like Ran or Officer Takagi, so he doesn't deserve another soccer ball this time.

But KID shouldn't know that. At least, Conan never clued to him as such. 'So… why…'

It was perplexing. KID was perplexing. Conan has mixed feelings about it.

But those feelings were of little matter when KID finally managed to free Lupin from the Tanuki's iron stomach. The dog barked before leaping straight at the first familiar face. Conan did not hide his joy at being sloberly licked as if the dog was greeting an old friend.

The thief and detective traded smiles, free of any edges. Sharing their sense of accomplishment of having "lend a hand" to Jirokichi's beloved partner. Their roles were completely forgotten as they took turns petting poor Lupin for having been trapped alone these few days.

It dawned on Conan that he had loosened his guard and had quite forgotten he was with a thief until the disguise, Mizuki Seto, was replaced with his iconic white suit. It surprised Shinichi how easily he can get swept away by the guy's charisma.

Because the one he had spent a short time with wasn't the renowned moonlight thief, but the man Conan only had a glimpse of seeing behind his conceited mask. The one that helps strangers without prompt, risks being captured by his enemy, carries guilt for failing upon a person's life, and recklessly charges in the request of a fake notice without knowing whether it was a trap or not.

When pointed out, the Phantom Thief theatrically replied with a few cheeky lines. Talking about not having the heart to leave a fellow "gentleman thief" in the dark and whatnot. But Shinichi knew better. Because had he been in the thief's shoes, he would have done exactly the same thing.

'It becomes more and more confusing why someone like you would steal. What burden are you holding in your chest? What exactly is your goal, Kaitou KID?'

As the police siren grew ever louder, KID said his cocky farewell before the Moonlight Magician leaped into the moonless night. Conan had to keep down the twitch of his lips, "As usual, he's such a smug bastard."

Lupin the Dog came back licking Conan, "Don't try to get too friendly." He tried pushing the dog back with one hand and petting him with the other. "By name. we're meant to be enemies." The detective's gaze was pulled back to the friendly neighborhood phantom thief, flying away in the night sky before letting a fond smile grace his face.

'It's really concerning that we're way too familiar with each other.'

After tonight, Conan becomes more and more determined. Not just to find out the why and the who, but the anticipation of getting to know KID in the most convoluted way possible. Through their match of wits, pulling the wool over the other's eyes using tricks and deceptions. Hiding the parts they want to hide only to reveal them when they least expected it.

As if he was a friend he couldn't wait to meet for the first time.

Inspector Nakamori had come by not long after with the Senior Advisor in tow. He was about to order his men to quickly search the people of the mansion, but Conan interrupted by telling him Mizuki-san was KID and he watched him fly away with his hang glider.

The Inspector, predictably, was crushed by the fact. Another failure to add to his list of failures. Conan kind of felt sorry for the guy. It's no wonder the mustache police failed to notice the great elation on Jirokichi's face as Lupin came running to greet his master in a touching reunion.

The tiny detective was about to search for Ran and the others when he was suddenly called out. "Wait, kid," Conan halted his steps as Advisor Suzuki gestured for him, "Come here!"

Having a vague idea of what he's about to hear, he came over while still acting innocuously, "Is something the matter, Jirokichi-ojiisan?"

"No, no, nothing's wrong, my boy. I simply wanted to express my gratitude."

"Eh?"

"Didn't you set Nakamori and his task force on me to help our favorite thief?" he started whispering, "KID told me once you figured out my notice, you would willingly be our accomplice. Who knew a simple switch of my dominant hand and you could lead the entire police force by the nose?"

"Favorite is a bit…" Conan awkwardly laughed, 'Rather, can you not make me sound like a criminal?'

"Honestly, at first I was a bit troubled when you stayed. Especially after you had pointed out all my new employees to be the potential kaitou. But KID told me to have faith that his favorite critic would see through everything and help get my precious Lupin back. And neither of you barely exchanged words."

Jirokichi began ruffling his hair with enough affection that rivals his dog. "It's a good thing you two are natural enemies, otherwise our pride Metropolitan Police Department wouldn't stand a chance against both of you together," The 72-year-old man laughed rumbustiously and surprised everyone around him with his sudden good mood.

Conan smiled stiffly, "Don't worry Jirokichi-ojiisan, the chances of me and KID ever working together won't likely happen any time soon."

. . .

When Kaito wished karma on Conan, he did not mean getting him literally thrown out from a zeppelin window by a bio-terrorist. KID knew the shrunken teen's luck would run out on him one day. He just knew it.

Deja vu hit him like a freight train as he once again came falling into a nosedive after the kid.

But this time the detective didn't prepare a paraglider beforehand. Nothing in his bag of tricks. His eyes were shut from the strong breeze and his small body flailed in the air with nothing to hold on to.

Never before had he seen Meitantei be this helpless. The sight felt like a punch in the gut. Kaito desperately strained his hand out. Swimming through the air. Trying to close the distance as they both kept falling faster and faster while only a shy distance away from the boy.

"Shit!" Please let me reach him in time! Reach him. Reach him. Reach HimGOTCHA!

KID grabbed a hold of his leg. Pulled him close until Kaito wrapped him around his arm before diving into the clouds and coming out in his white-suited gear.

The ungrateful brat better thanked him for saving his reckless ass. Again.

"Who would have thought they'd really toss you out the window." Kaito didn't think there was anyone evil enough to defenestrate a child. "What are you going to do, Meitantei? Are you giving up?"

"Don't screw with me!" Conan looked offended to be even accused of such even as a joke. "Hurry and take me back to the airship!"

'What do you think I am, your flying taxi?' "Don't be unreasonable, my hang-glider this time doesn't have an engine. Consider yourself lucky to still be alive."

They landed at Mikawa Bay in Sakushima, being the nearest occupied island. His feet hit the sand and KID retracted his hang glider before gently putting Conan down. The adult in a child's body had his gaze set on the Bell Tree Airship in the sky, baring his teeth like a guardian dog at his enemy. "This is bad, at this rate they'll reach Osaka within an hour."

KID glanced up and shared the same grave feeling, "And once they do, the bomb will spread the bacteria to infect the seven million people there and create a big panic."

Conan rested his chin on his hands, striking the familiar pose when he fell deep in thought while walking to more solid ground with KID by his side.

"There's nothing we can do being stuck on the ground, so we'll have to find a way to get back to the airship before the next hour." When no idea came to mind, Conan abruptly ruffled his own hair in frustration, "Dammit, if only that bastard hadn't thrown me off."

"You know those guys would have been more lenient and let you stay if you actually remember to be a kid once in a while," KID pointed out.

Meitantei glared at the magician, "I can't help it. If I cowered back then, my friends might have been included in 'making an example' out of us. I couldn't risk that so I had to be the sole brunt of their anger."

Kaito had to hold back a sigh at such reasoning, "As always, you're such a good person, Meitantei. I would admire you if half the things you do haven't almost gotten you killed."

"Says the guy wanted internationally and almost got gunned down multiple times."

"I'm a guy with a hang glider and a bulletproof vest. What a short bean like you have?"

He didn't answer. Conan simply smiled with one hand on his belt and the other on his power-up shoes—

"Alright, alright, I get your point!" KID waved his hands up, pleading for mercy from the four-eyed demon child. It was only after he was out of the detective's ire did he ask, "So... do you have a plan on how we're getting ourselves back up?"

"Not yet, but for now, I'm gonna need to warn a friend." Conan pulled out his phone and began dialing a number while KID started petting a random goat that passed by. "By the way, is your assistant on that ship?"

"No. He's standing by in Osaka if I ever need backup."

"Shouldn't you call to warn him?"

"I didn't get to hide my burner phone from the hijacker so no luck there."

"Do you want to borrow my phone?"

KID smirked, though the sincerity is genuine he wouldn't let it pass Conan to use that number to his advantage, "And leave a record? No thanks."

"Fair enough– Ah, Hattori." He left the detective to his conversation while KID was busy cooing at the goat. Who knew a farm animal would be this adorable? But he still kept an ear out on the shrunken-teen's conversation until the loud, distinctive sound of a chopper passed over them.

KID and Conan locked their gaze at the same thing and knew that once they found a way to hitchhike the police helicopter, then they'll have their chance of getting back to the ship. But then KID looked down at his little companion and he needn't worry since Meitantei seemed to already have a plan in mind.

Until the request of boarding the chopper wasn't for Conan Edogawa and Plus One but for Shinichi Kudō instead.

'I have a bad feeling already.'

Conan began turning to his savior and gave a placid smile that KID was familiar with, it was one of those smiles the brat used when he wanted to manipulate the adults to his whims.

"KID-san… " he started sweetly and shivers crawled up Kaito's spine.

. . .

"Oi, oi, where on earth are we going to find a Kudō Shinichi when you are Kudō Shinichi?"

"Like. I. Said. I'm asking you to disguise as me!"

"Tch, why do I have to disguise myself as you again?" 'He is shamelessly using me, huh? Not that I have room to talk.'

"Huh?"

"Err… No, I meant… " Kaito huffed irritably, "Fine, I don't mind lending a hand, but don't you interfere with my work."

"Well, I can't guarantee that promise…"

Side by side, they both wore dubious expressions, glancing at the enemy that they were supposed to be. But in no circumstances do they trust each other.

Sure they share similar sentiments of not wanting the people in the ship getting hurt, but Conan doesn't trust KID won't try stealing the ring during the commotion while Kaito doesn't trust Meitantei won't try capturing KID as a bonus once he's done dealing with the terrorist.

'This guy is a devious opportunist after all.' Both of them narrowed their eyes at each other.

Well, for Conan, he wouldn't mind letting the thief off because of a debt or two. It wouldn't be the first time anyway, but there's no way he'll make it easy for the smug bastard.

So the detective grinned cheekily up at the thief. "...I'll do the best that I can do," he said and knew KID wouldn't believe a lick of his words. Just to make the magician sweat a bit.

"Is it really alright?" Kaito leaned back and smirked, "Asking help from a thief like me?"

"It can't be helped. I'm physically a kid and you're Kaitou KID, how else are either of us getting back on the airship without being stopped?"

"Fair point, I'm just surprised you have no problem getting cozy with a known criminal. Not worried about my nefarious intentions?"

Conan rolled his eyes, "What intention? You're nothing more than a petty thief—"

"Petty?! Meitantei, I've stolen several millions worth of gems—"

"—and a waste of police resources since you always either return the jewel or to whom I assumed the proper owner. Your major crime is at most property damage and humiliating Japan's pride forces with your crazed stunts."

That made KID tick and his smile turned forceful for his 'stellar review', "How rude, I'm doing most of the legwork here in your plan, Meitantei. You should be begging for the great kaitou's help instead of giving me attitude."

The little detective's gaze became heated at the jab before a mask curtained his emotion, looking up at Kaito with teary puppy eyes and a pout on his lips. "KID-niichan –"

"Nope. Stop. Absolutely not. Anything but that." Kaito could barely stand the look. Not only was it creepy, but the thief also has certain soft spots for animals and kids. Using that look with that face should be illegal.

Conan smirked and hoped that should teach the thief from asking him to beg.

"Well, put that aside. What's your plan afterward?"

"Eh?" Conan tilted his head.

KID's one eye began to twitch, "Please tell me you actually have a plan and you're not storming in there blindly, right?"

"Who do you think you're talking to? Of course, I have a plan."

KID did not look convinced, which Conan found very insulting.

"It's a good plan, I swear."

KID's gaze became even more dubious as he crossed his arms, "I very much doubt that," he grumbled under his breath.

Kaito can admit Tantei-kun is resourceful and clever to match wits with him, but he knew firsthand how easily the detective threw caution out the wind. He easily makes Kaitou KID have more self-preservation than him, and Kaito is the one taunting crime syndicates and jumping off buildings on a regular basis.

Not to mention, a terrorist group is a whole different ballpark compared to his usual killers and thieves. How exactly is Tantei-kun going to handle them without recklessly putting himself in harm's way?

Kaito's face must have shown his unease because Tantei-kun gave a reassuring smile as if everything was in the palm of his hand. "Don't worry, I'll definitely work it out for sure."

'Have faith in me,' his gaze seemed to say. The same gaze he had when the detective swore to land the plane safely before capturing him. One that promised to create an impossible feat possible.

A pair of magician's eyes that is.

KID's lips twitched up and shook his head in self-admonishment, 'That's right, this is Meitantei we're talking about. As long as the people he loved are up there, there's no stopping him from getting back to them. No matter the obstacle.'

They noticed the previous police chopper was heading back toward where they were. KID stood up and shrouded his cape around him, "Then this Great Thief of the Sky shall humbly be your white wings for today and bring us to the battlefield."

He pulled his cape off and appeared as "Kudō Shinichi" in the flesh, with a dramatic flair that would make anyone gape in awe.

Conan looked unimpressed, "Do you have to be so melodramatic?"

"You're the last person I want to hear that from," he deadpanned.

With Inspector Megure had already given Kudō the address for the nearest landing spot for the helicopter. So both of them waited there, their clothes and hair flailed from the blowing wind, hands in their pockets, and standing in identical poses as they wore a battle-ready expression.

"By the way, is it just me..." Kaito began to say, "...or is planning a B&E into a flying ship and deceiving law enforcers is unusually easy with you?"

Conan narrowed his eyes, "What are you trying to say?"

KID smiled. Conan does not like that smile. That's his 'I'm gonna start shit for giggles' type of smile. "Tell me, Meitantei. Are you interested in being the Moonlight Magician's assistant?"

Conan cannot believe the words coming out of his mouth, "HA?!"

"Think about it. I'm already amazing on my own, but with you and me together, there'll be no one and no place that stands a chance against us. We'll be the unstoppable dynamic duo!"

"You already have an assistant, and the fact you even think of asking me to be a thief was a possibility makes you insane."

'Your girlfriend seemed convinced' but KID doesn't have a death wish by telling who convinced her, "I simply believe in miracles, Meitantei. And you can't fool my eyes, deep beneath that righteous heart of yours lies the making of a great con man."

Conan opened his mouth to refute but had sudden flashbacks of all the illegal acts he had done to compensate for his small body, "Leave me alone."

"Come to the kaitou side. We have cookies."

"I have a dart watch and I'm not afraid to use it if you don't stop talking nonsense."

Their banter was cut short as the chopper finally landed in front of them before being greeted by Officer Satō and Takagi. Kaito breathed in, calming his nerves before putting on his poker face, "Looks like it's showtime."

"We heard directly from Megure-keibu," said Satō while offering a hand in greeting, "The MPD shall gladly accept your help within our ranks."

"Thank you for accepting me," Kaito replied and shook hands. Kudō's speech was easy to emulate as it was reminiscent of his KID persona; distant, polite, cool, but a lot less flirty.

"No, no," Takagi scratched the back of his head, "I think it should be us thanking you– CONAN-KUN?!"

"Hi, Takagi-keiji!" The not-child chirped, which would have been unnerving had they known he was thrown off the zeppelin just recently.

"What are you– why are you– aren't you supposed to be on the airship?"

"I'll explain everything once it's over," KID interrupted, "For now, we need to make haste to the Bell Tree Airship."

Throughout the trip, KID did what he did best when confronted by a pair of police, sticking to his character and avoiding their questions. They did not suspect one bit. He turned to his co-conspirator and shared matching grins. Conan gave him a thumbs up for a plan being well executed.

They soon caught up with the hijacked zeppelin. Kaito asked the pilot the condition of the wind, the speed of the helicopter, and already planning how to adjust his fall to stay on course with the airship. Meitantei seemed to have been on the same wavelength despite not being the one with the hang-glider.

They matched their timing exactly as KID politely gave his farewell while Conan winked at them, both enjoying the mischievous thrill of giving the two law enforcers a heart attack as Kaito scooped the detective before jumping off the chopper.

Their landing could have been better though.

To be fair, it is their first time actively working together so it's within their foresight that there would be kinks. But getting almost blown away was not how KID wanted to go out. A little improv from Tantei-kun was all they needed to fix that kink. They hung on to the grappler together, slowly climbing up until it was safe for KID to finally switch off his hang-glider.

The two reasonably sighed in relief at the close call.

"Forget what I said about being a fellow kaitou, you're a terrible assistant."

"Shut up and walk, KID."

. . .

After bidding Meitantei good luck in drawing out the terrorist, Kaito bid his time on top of the blimp. Playing off his crooked role to examine the situation from above.

Until his theory was proven right.

It's been nagging on Kaito since he heard from Tantei-kun that the Red Siamese had blown out the facility they've stolen the bacteria from, as well as leaving a bottle with their mark for the police to conveniently find.

As if they wanted the police to be led by a red-herring. Something Kaito would often do as KID himself.

And as KID, the only reason he would bomb the facility was so no one knows he didn't steal anything in the first place. To make the fake bacteria seem real.

If everything was faked and this hijack was an elaborate ruse, then their next step would be to scare off the people into evacuating. Leaving a very empty and a very vulnerable city ready for the taking.

The game changes entirely if the bacteria is a counterfeit, but Kaito wasn't willing to set aside the small percentage chance of them being real.

"Better rely on the deductions from a pro to be sure."

KID snuck back into the ship and was quick to find Tantei-kun from the spots he suspected where the bombs would be. He took Conan by surprise before leading him to the "interesting" sight of the bioterrorist setting up rocket flares as a giant smokescreen.

Exactly like KID predicted.

And since the nearest city with national treasures and poor security was up ahead. It doesn't take a Great Detective to connect the dots.

"Don't tell me… that's why they choose Nara…"

Finally their thoughts aligned, "Certainly a possibility."

"But… but if that's true. They wouldn't have needed the bacteria."

KID shrugged, he seemed to have an idea why that is but just like Conan, he wasn't one to share unless he was sure of his suspicion. "I don't know how terrorist works, but I do know the mind of a thief. If we're right, then this is either a pretty elaborate job or they're just hitting two birds with one stone."

"That's why you stayed out on the airship, you wanted to confirm your suspicion."

KID nodded solemnly as he looked onto the rocket flares, he might have difficulty thinking backward like a detective, but he does know how to move forward like a criminal.

Conan smirked, "So you've stopped pretending this isn't your problem, Kaitou KID-san?"

"I'm still technically a thief, you know. I have a reputation to uphold as a no-good crook."

"That's stupid," Conan deadpanned, "The only person you're trying to convince here is yourself."

Without a word, Conan hurriedly went back to the ship to put his trap in action. Unaware of the taken aback expression KID had as he gazed at the back of the shrunken detective, who was running ahead without stopping.

"Your faith in me is making my job difficult, Meitantei." The smile Kaito had was nothing short of fond, but his eyes crinkled in pain.

Playing the role of the villain was the poker face he decided on from the start of his moonlighting career, but it becomes easier to forget his mask around his rival. Taking a deep breath, he lowered his hat and repeated his father's words like a mantra.

'Remember Kaito; no matter where, no matter when, never forget your poker face.'

"I know, Pops… I know…"

. . .

When Kaito decided to leave Tantei-kun to his own devices, he fully expected KID to be part of whatever plan cooked up in the mind of the Heisei Homes. There was only so much one shrunken-teen could do, but he knew the detective was capable enough to cut their number through divide and conquer. It's why he handed Jirokichi's fingerprint to him since the detective would have more use of it. The little guy needed all the tools in his arsenal after all.

So focused on survival, It slipped Kaito's mind of the one teeny tiny fact.

Conan Edogawa is a gremlin.

"Oi, oi, are you serious?" KID landed from the rafter he'd been perching, a hand on his card gun the whole time as Meitantei inevitably faced the group of mercenaries like the trouble-magnet that he is... But Kaito did not expect to get front row seats of a seventeen-turned-seven-year-old beating three armed men with childish glee while barely sweating any effort.

"What... is all this?" He asked nervously while keeping a lay-back front.

"The three traps Jirokichi-san had set up specially just for you."

'Well, yeah, that's impressive, sure. But that's not exactly what I'm referring to.' But it seemed the detective was unaware of how creepy he looked from an outsider's point of view. Kaito knew Meitantei was capable but never knew to what extent. 'As I thought, the brat is scary~'

Kaito shared his condolences to anyone unfortunate enough to become the detective's enemy.

Then KID noticed the new player from the bell of the elevator. Both of them moved before the first shot was made. KID let his cape flurry behind him to catch the shooter's eyes but it wasn't long before he changed target to Conan. The bullet grazed the boy's cheek, but didn't stop the soccer ball hitting him right to the chin and disabling the leader of their group.

"Amazing," Kaito commented. 'Really, you're stealing all the thunder that I barely play any part. As expected of my rival.'

Kaito sort of wanted to give him applause, only Meitantei would be able to single-handedly defeat most of the fake bioterrorists in the body of a child. Instead, Kaito knelt down beside him, admiring his rival for being the big damn hero of the day before rewarding the little warrior with a bandage from a dearly beloved. 'You truly are amazing, Meitantei.'

They heard the leader about to come into consciousness, KID reacted fast and made sure to empty the magazine of the gun before doing the same for the other unconscious men.

Conan had picked the radio, then with a childlike arrogance, proudly declaring the defeat of the leader. That should shock the other members enough to give Inspector Nakamori and the others to incapacitate the rest of the mercenaries.

The detective then came upon the criminal's phone and the vial that was supposed to carry the viral bacteria. It was almost comical to watch a kid interrogating a grown-ass man that Kaito had to snuff down his chuckle.

The leader said nothing, but it seemed to be within Meitantei's expectation as his smile became all the more impish.

"If you don't start confessing honestly…" Conan said in the sweetest of voices in contrast to the threat coming out of his mouth, "I'll pour the content all over you~"

'Ah, so that was your plan.'

The leader barely flinched as he scoffed at the little boy's threat. "Do what you want."

"Okay!" He chirped before promptly throwing the content all over his face that he choked, and KID didn't hide his laughter this time.

"You– damn– BRAT–!" The older man forced himself up but Kaito was already intercepting on the detective's behalf. A short "Night, night!" was given before Kaito sprayed some sleeping gas, knocking him out completely.

"So it really is fake," Conan confirmed the undeniable proof in his hand with a shark grin of vindication before he turned to KID, who wore a matching grin on his face.

"Guess that explains that. Looks like our little team-up can finally end here, Meitantei."

"What team-up?" Conan glared petulantly up at the thief, "You've only been hanging from above without lifting a finger."

"I was observing. There's no point in using your trump card on the first move. Though it turns out you never needed it." Kaito glanced nervously back at the unconscious burglars and inwardly shuddered again.

"I know, I know." Conan waved him off and allowed the gratefulness to show on his face. Because he truly is thankful to KID; for silently watching his back when he was on his own, helping him show the truth, lending his strength to get back to the Bell Tree Airship, saving his life.

There are no words that could let him express how deeply he appreciates the phantom thief.

"As agreed, I'll try not to say anything once you swipe the ring like the good little thief you are."

KID eyed Conan suspiciously, looking at the same wide eyes and innocuous smile he wore when defeating the fake-but-armed-terrorist. 'He really is a con man, a con man for criminals that is.'

However, KID knew Meitantei was a man of his word so he let it slide. Conan walked with his back to him, a conscious act to look away from the crime happening before his eyes. That was a considerate act coming from the tiny detective, but Kaito strangely only felt uneasy at the lenient way KID was let off. As if waiting for the other shoe to drop.

'Well, better not look a gift horse in the mouth.' KID went to check the leader's pocket when he heard the tiny detective call out after walking over to the elevator.

"Oh, that's right! You should hurry and get out of there since the police will start crawling up the Sky Deck soon." Conan looked over his shoulder and showed the Moonlight Magician the prized gem, Lady Sky, he had in hand. A shit-eating grin was on his face as he waved the magician's goodbye. "If you don't want to get caught, that is."

"AH– YOU–!" But before Kaito could stop him, the elevator door closed on his face. Effectively cutting him off and leaving the thief empty-handed. Apparently whatever appreciation Conan had for the thief, does not include letting him off with a crime.

Kaito had to hand it to the detective how easily he managed to get under his skin because Kaito wanted to scream.

'I knew I shouldn't trust you, conniving punk!'

AN: I stand by my case that Kudou Shinichi is a feral child and would not hesitate to be a little shit. Especially to KID.

Can you just imagine from KID's point of view, witnessing a supposed child just defeating armed mercenary one by one without breaking a sweat? Anyone would be scared right?
