Hey Frisk ? Chara thoulked.
"Yes ?" Frisk stopped what they were doing to look at Chara's projection.
Do you want to play a game ? They asked them.
When you are incorporeal, there aren't that many things you can do, you can't touch things, you can't talk to people, you can't even eat or move very far, the only way Chara could do any of these things was through Frisk.
Usually the two of them tried to agree on what to do when they had free time, but even in those cases Chara was either observing Frisk doing something or rarely they were doing it themself but with Frisk's body while they were the one watching. In all cases, they were not really doing it together.
But there were a few things that they could actually both do together at the same time, and among those was playing certain board games. Obviously Chara couldn't move their pieces but they could just tell Frisk what they wanted to play whenever it was their turn.
It was pretty much the same as if they were actually there, but only real difference was that to an outsider it looked like Frisk was playing against themself. They couldn't play any game either though, battleship was out of the question for example.
"Sure" Frisk answered, Chara didn't ask for things all that often and they weren't doing something very important anyways. "What do you want to play ?"
Chara's projection looked at the massive pile of board games stacked in a corner of Frisk's room. Why did Toriel even have this many of those ? Even in the underground she already had a full box of these.
After considering their options for a bit, Chara settled on an answer :
Checkers. They told Frisk.
Without another word, they went to grab the box and put in on the ground in their room, they would have put it on the table of the living room but Toriel and Asgore were both home and they'd rather not have anyone watching them.
They opened the box and quietly began setting up the pieces.
"Which color do you want ?"
Chara didn't really care about this. Black. They responded.
Frisk finished setting up the board then turned it around so that the white pieces would be on their side. Chara' projection floated to the other side of the board.
You can start. Chara informed Frisk.
They did as instructed and moved a piece near the center.
Chara pointed at one of their piece and then to another square near it.
Move this piece over there.
Frisk moved Chara's piece accordingly before immediately following by moving one of their own. Chara took a bit longer before settling on their next move.
On their fourth move, Chara made a mistake and allowed Frisk to take one of their pieces.
It went without saying, but when playing a game against each other like this, reading the other's thoughts was not allowed. That would be cheating and there would be fun no fun if they knew the other's strategy at all times.
After a few more turns, Chara caught up by taking a piece back. They were back to square one now.
Frisk moved one of their pieces forward, forgetting that this piece was protecting another in front of it.
As soon as they did so, Chara pointed to one of their piece, one of Frisk's, an empty space behind it, then another one of Frisk's pieces and one last empty square.
This piece takes this one and goes here, then takes that one and goes there.
Frisk verified that was Chara told them was indeed possible before being forced to move Chara's piece to take two of their own.
"Damn it." They whispered.
They couldn't even take that piece back to at least make up for one of the pieces they lost…
They advanced one of their pieces from the back row to threaten it, then Chara told them to move one of their other front pieces in order to protect it.
They managed to get rid of these pieces eventually but they had to give up some of their own as well to do so. Quickly they found themself struggling due to being outnumbered on the board.
Move this one here.
Frisk did so and realised that they had no way of preventing Chara from getting one of their pieces to Frisk's side of the board within the next three turns.
They sighed.
"I give up, you win again." Frisk admitted defeat.
Oh, come on ! Why cannot we play until the end ? I do not give in when you are winning. They complained, unhappy about not getting to beat Frisk.
"What about that time where we played monopoly ?" They reminded Chara.
That does not count, I landed on a hotel and had to sell the only houses I had in order to pay, that game was already basically over. Also monopoly takes forever, checkers does not.
"You always win at checkers anyways"
Do not be a sore loser.
"Can we play something else ? That was too short and i want a chance to win this time."
How about a game based on luck ? Equal chances.
"Sounds good."
The two of them ended up deciding to play Yahtzee.
This time around, Chara got Frisk to accept to let them actually throw their dices themself. They didn't want to just pick which dices to keep or not, where's the fun if Frisk does the random dice throwing for them ? Thus, Frisk gave them permission to use their arm to throw dices just during their turn.
Frisk got off to a bad start.
Maybe just keep the '1' and try to get more, if you fail you won't be losing much points.
"Don't help me ! We're playing against each other !" Frisk refused to get their assistance.
In the end, they actually ended up doing what Chara told them to do anyways.
When Frisk let their arm go numb so that Chara would take control of it, they didn't expect them to immediately throw the dices way too far, a couple of them ended up rolling out of their room and into the corridor.
"Chara !" They thoulked.
Sorry. I am not used to throwing things anymore, it is difficult to judge the amount of strength I am putting into it. Chara apologised.
...Can i get up ?
After taking a moment to try and understand the meaning of this, Frisk realised Chara had asked for permission to use the rest of their body to go search for the dices they just lost. They gave Chara a nod and let them take over.
4, 3, 4, 4, 6 Chara thoulked as their picked up the dices.
"That's a good throw" Frisk commented.
I am keeping the 4's.
Frisk raised their eyebrows by force despite Chara still being in control of them.
"Who would have thought ?" They sarcastically asked.
Jealous.
With those words Chara threw the two remaining dices again, getting one extra 4.
They used their last turn to throw the last one a third time hoping to get a yahtzee, but it didn't work.
Mark me the 4's. Frisk wrote '16' on the corresponding line on Chara's grid. They had named Chara's grid "Snow decahedron" since they would have a very hard time explaining why they wrote "Chara" if say Asgore stumbled on it later on. With this name however, if it happened they could just say it was a pun that Sans made and they'd definitly believe it. It did sound like a 'Sans' pun, but he wasn't actually the one who made that one.
Chara had suggested Frisk to name their own grid "Legendary fartmaster" but Frisk had opposed that idea as that would be just as weird to explain.
Frisk groaned as they were forced to set a 6 on their 3's in order not to have to cross something out. They were losing again.
It wasn't even that big of a margin, but they were still being beaten even when playing a different game.
The worst part was that unless they got four 5's, they wouldn't even get the bonus points which would ruin whatever chance and they left.
They only had two turns remaining until the end of the game, Frisk wrote down the score Chara gained from their latest turn before throwing the dices.
"1, 2, 5, 1, 6" Frisk said out loud, but making sure to keep the volume low enough not to be heard.
Its not looking that good for you.
They didn't have much of a choice on what to do next, Frisk threw four dices again.
"5,4,5,2"
Frisk didn't say anything but they smiled and Chara felt the hope radiating from their partner.
Frisk shook the two last dices in their hands for a very long time.
Just do it already.
"Come on…" Frisk thought out loud.
They launched the dices. Both of them looked at the results through Frisk's eyes.
A 1 and a 5.
"Yes !" Frisk thoulked whilst Chara groaned, if Frisk didn't get any 5 the first human would have won right there.
You are still going to lose. Chara stated, and well they were right. Neither of them had counted the exact score yet but it was pretty obvious to them that unless Frisk got a Yahtzee for their last turn somehow, Chara would win by a few dozen points.
Chara's last turn ended up not getting them any points.
Frisk threw the dices.
The dices rolled 4, 2, 4, 5 and 6. Chara narrated.
Frisk kept the 4's and threw again, knowing their chances were slim.
"4, 4, 6." Frisk thoulked after seeing their results, grinning. They had just gotten really lucky with this.
They had one more throw and one more dice, they had one chance out of six to get a 4 and to steal the victory at the last moment. They could already imagine Chara fuming if that did happen.
It will not happen.
"It will."
No, it will not.
"Prove it"
You will be proving me right by yourself in a moment.
"I'll make you eat those words. I'll win this."
Twice the pride, double the fall.
Frisk paused for a moment.
"Did you… Did you just quote count Dooku from "Star Wars : Revenge of the sith ?" They asked.
They heard a giggle in their head.
I did. Chara admitted.
"First, 'Loox Eyewalker', now this ?" Frisk asked.
I also quoted Obi-Wan with 'Hello there' when you were petting lesser dog and you did not even notice it. Chara pointed out.
"There are a bunch of situation when someone can say something like this !"
But not with this exact tone though.
"I don't remember the tone ! That was too long ago."
Fine, whatever, there are never too many Star Wars jokes anyways.
Frisk's smile grew much wider as they got an idea.
"In that case…" They said with the dice in their hand, hoping to get a 4.
"May the 4th be with me" They said as they threw the dice, making Chara laugh.
They got a 5.
Too bad, i win, it was a pretty good pun though i will give you that. Chara told them as their smile faded away.
"That would have been so cool if it had worked." Frisk complained.
Sucks to be you.
"You might want to rephrase that" Frisk warned them, smirking.
That does not count, im just sharing a body with you, that is all.
Frisk thought about how they should have SAVED before throwing that last dice, then they could have LOADED and threw it again until they got that joke to work by actually getting that 4.
You cheater… Chara commented after reading Frisk's thoughts. It would not even have been funny the second time anyways. They added.
"How many times did you repeat the snow poff jokes again ?" Frisk asked as a counterpoint.
That was comedy of repetition, it was the entire point of the joke. You cannot compare it.
"Whatever you say." Frisk taunted to annoy Chara, they saw right through it and didn't respond.
Frisk went to put back the dices where they had taken them and threw the grids in the trash can after scrambling them into little balls of paper.
"I think that's enough board games for now. Wanna do something else ?" Frisk wondered.
I think… Im on 'board'.
Frisk hid their face in their hands to prevent Chara from seeing their smile, they had to admit they weren't expecting another pun so soon. This one did get them.
I couldn't let you have the last laugh Frisk. Puns are my thing. Chara announced.
