Overtaking on the Outside

It starts when Wyatt puts his foot on the accelerator and takes off into the darkening horizon, leaving you behind in the dust.

It's there when the demons are spilling out onto the streets, and it's just you, Mel and Polly and your aunt's dead body in an alley with explosions and screams sounding around you, and you can't look at the two little girls beside you because if you do you might burst into tears, and that just wouldn't do now, would it?

It's when you think you're slowly gaining on your brother in the death-and-darkness-and-all-bad-things and sometimes you swear that when you look at your hands all you see is shades of red, but people still turn and look at you, giving you their lives with their so what's the plan, boss? written in their eyes.

It's when you know what you have to do and they say, "You know something like this has never been done before, right?" and instead of grabbing the front of their shirts, shaking them and screaming hysterically helpmehelpmepleasegivemeabetterplanonethatwillworkplease! you just look up coolly, smirk, and reply, "That's why it's going to work."

It's when it's twenty years ago and everything's right with the world again, but sleep never lets you forget.

It's when Leo says, "You're not family." and becomes another back walking out another door, and you get a strange sense of déjà vu.

It's when Piper doesn't want to see you anymore – and you feel like you can't blame her, either.

It's when you're covered in demons guts after a solo vanquish, because the girls all had lunch dates or hair appointments or who really gives a fuck trivial things that'll kill them in the end, and you're more messed up than ever because it was an upper level demon, and a power of three spell, and yet yours was the only voice reading it out before the damn thing died.

It's when the one thing that kept you sane for the past four years turns around and literally rips your heart out – now that's when you know you're fucked beyond repair.

It's when your big brother looks at you again after years of silence, and he's taller, harder, stronger, older; but then again, so are you.

It's when you look at the baby and vow, "… if I can't save you, I swear to God I'll stop you –" and you know you've never been older than you are right now.
