Shiro Branwen

Grunts and yells could be heard as two people clashed with each other. Shiro jumped into a kick hoping to catch Tai off-guard. He saw Tai smirk before blocking the kick. Tai grabbed his leg when it hit him and spun flinging the boy towards the ground.

Tai laughed, "You almost had me there. It was a good move, you just need to know that it leaves you open to grapples."

The boy rolled his head over before flipping over on his back. "It wouldn't have been a problem if you let me use my blade. I would have destroyed you"

Tai smiled and rolled his shoulders, "Maybe, but unless you want to end up like Ruby you should practice in Hand-to-Hand as well." Tai came over and extended his hand to the teen.

"Yea, yea" He grabbed the hand and was lifted off the ground pushing his white hair out of his eyes. Then he had a thought. He quickly shifted his weight and tried to throw Tai onto the ground. Payback so rightly deserved. Tai must have known or something because as soon as he shifted his weight Tai went with it, shifting at the last second. Shiro found his face back in the dirt, Tai's hand on top of his head.

"And maybe you'll learn something new" Tai said in a way that Shiro know he was smiling. Tai didn't help him up this time. He moved over to the side of the clearing. "How long are you going to wait?"

Shiro was confused until a greying old man walked out of the trees.

"Qrow, always happy to see an old teammate. Ever since you started training my daughter she's been spending more time with her weapon than her studies. I assume I have you to thank for that?"

Qrow pulled out his flask and drank a little. "Yea she picked up fast. Can't keep up with her, sometimes literally" Qrow looked past Tai towards Shiro who was paying attention to the conversation until he noticed Qrow looking at him.

Tai sighed, "At least say hello, there is no need to be rude Shiro"

"But" A stern look from Tai shut Shiro down before he could even offer a rebuttal. "Fine. Hello...Qrow"

"That's dad to you squirt. I also accept the titles 'pure awesome' and 'best of Stark'" Qrow snickered.

"You wish you were the best. Better add 'dreamer' to those list of titles" Tai shot back. Qrow didn't even seem to hear him. Instead he walked up to Shiro.

He smiled as he looked down at his protege. His family. Or at least the only on he cared about. Qrow could feel his eyes go soft, "Every time I see you you remind me more of your mother"

Shiro's body went rigid. There was one thing he knew and that was that you never talked about his mother. Shrio knew the basics. That her name was Aya. That she died giving birth. That ever since Qrow had been scarce in Shiro's life.

"But something is different" That caught Shiro's attention. "Yea there is" Qrow put his left hand on Shiro's head. "You have something right here"

Shiro felt Qrow mess his hair back and forth. Shiro fought to get the hand away but was too late. His hair was messed up, a poof of what his hair used to look like, tangled and unkempt. Shrio had had enough. He jumped back scowling. "Tai I'm heading back to the house. I need to wash my face, take a shower."

"When you get there tell Ruby we are having baked nacho's in celebration for Yang getting into Beacon!"

All Tai got back was a thumbs up from the retreating teen.

"You don't have much time left. You need to tell him, not me" Tai told Qrow.

"Look I know okay. I'm just not much of a father. Every time I see him I see his mother and any words I say just sound distant." Qrow huffed before taking a swig.

"Was he approved? He is ready for it, even if he is young"

"Of course Ozpin approved. Why wouldn't he? He's my son. He's got his mother's talents. And Ozpin would be a fool if he thought his age would be an issue"

"Yea, since he has such a great role model-"

"The only problem I have" Qrow interrupted, "Is that I don't know if I can trust Oz not to push it. Yea, he's ready but that doesn't mean he needs to be doing our jobs...or at least mine, sorry"

Tai looked down in thought. "I know I haven't always seen eye to eye with Ozpin, especially after the incident with Summer"

Qrow nodded

"But he needs you to see that you care for him"

"I do!"

"I know you do, but does he? He is in a sensitive time in his life. He is trying to find out who he is and what he can be. If you believe that him going to Beacon is what he needs, let him go"

Qrow looked at his flask. Stared at it while he sorted through his thoughts. "Tai...would you feel the same if it were Ruby instead of Shiro?"

Tai's eyes hardened. Give up his little girl to the same person who killed her mother? Hell no...but Ruby would be so happy. She would have experiences that right now she could only dream of. Her happy smiling face. The exact smile he would always see on Summer's face. Tai snapped back to reality, "It would be hard. I would do what I think would make her the happiest. Even if I didn't like doing it"

Qrow nodded. "Then I'll tell him tomorrow, if you don't mind me staying the night?"

"No way. Absolutely not" Qrow would have been surprised or offended if Tai wasn't grinning like a madman. "Seriously though, if you get drunk don't throw up on my couch again...I had to get new cushions."

"Fine. Fine. I'll need all my faculties in order to do this tomorrow anyway."

"Do you want to stay for dinner?" Tai asked.

"Nah. Already ate. Plus it would upset Shiro I think."

Shiro had a restless sleep. His father was here? Why? Every time his father had showed up things had changed. Not badly necessarily, just...different. It made him figit all night.

Early in the morning he could finally feel his eyes start to shut from exhaustion. Well, it didn't matter. Qrow didn't stay in one place for too long. He was probably...already…..gone…..

"UNCLE QROW!"

Shiro jumped out of bed, his senses telling him that something just happened. He ran out of his room, grabbing his sword before running into the hall. He practically jumped down the stairs. Hefting his weapon up he looked around for the enemy, only to see Ruby hanging off of Qrow's arm like a sloth.

Shiro was confused and tired.

"Hey kid. I came to talk" Qrow looked at Shiro, ignoring the large parasite still on his arm.

"Aww, but uncle Qrow you promised next time I saw you that you'd spar with me!" Ruby whined making her puppy-dog face.

Shiro didn't have time for this. He started walking abck upstairs to get dressed, not like he was gonna get any more sleep. "Yea 'Uncle Qrow' why don't you spar with your pupil and leave me alone" There was some hurt there, some jealously, but it pointed more towards his exhaustion than anything. He continued up the stairs, hearing Qrow sigh heavily back in the living room.

He got dressed but stayed in his room looking out the window towards the training area out front. After a while of hanging in his room, Shiro heard someone open the door to his room behind him. "You know most people would knock before walking into a teenager's room, but you're not one for manners are you?"

"I'm sorry" he heard a small voice say with some sadness.

Turning around he saw Ruby. She was shifting around on her feet while looking at the ground.

"Oh, no. Ruby I thought you were-"

"Don't be mad at Qrow!" She said looking determined. "I know things are complicated between you two but he is your father. He came to see you, not me. I understand that. Just...just, I would be broken if something happened to Dad while we were fighting. Please, just talk to him?"

"Ruby" She made her puppy face towards him. He felt himself buckling. "Ruby, but I can't just-"

"Do you hate him" She said looking like she was tearing up.

"N-No"

"Then please. For me?" Her eyes seemed to get bigger. She put her arms together with little fists under her neck while looking up at him.

Dahhh! Ruby was too good at this. In this state he would probably do anything for her. "Oh Fine"

"Yay!" She jumped out of her face like it never happened. Tears went away as quick as they appeared. "Go now! I'm rooting for you!" She practically pushed him downstairs.

Qrow was talking with Tai in the kitchen. They stopped when Shiro was pushed in by Ruby. He felt her hands leave his back. He looked back to see Ruby behind the with a small flag and a 'Go go Shiro!' sign. How did?...never mind, this was Ruby so who knows

"Hey kiddo. I wanted to talk with you." Shiro didn't move but did stare at his father. "Want to eh...talk outside?"

"Fine" Shiro glanced back at Ruby who was waving the flag victoriously. "Doesn't look like I have a choice anyway. Both Tai and Qrow chuckled when a small 'nope' was heard from behind the wall.

Qrow grabbed something wrapped on the kitchen table before walking outside. Shiro followed behind him.

"Listen. Things are going to be changing around here" Shiro knew it.

"What did you do this time?" Shiro sighed. He had heard some of the stories from Ruby and Yang.

"Listen. I didn't do anything. I come to tell you some good news"

"Really?" Shiro didn't believe it.

"You've always wanted to become a huntsman and you know I have some contacts. I managed to talk Ozpin into letting you try. Even at your young age-"

"You did WHAT!?" Shiro could feel his smile. He saw the world opening up around him, and not just those trips he used to take with Tai, but REAL action REAL adventure. His own story. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" He grabbed Qrow into a tight hug, catching the older man off guard. "I'll work hard I promise! You won't regret this!" Shrio seemed to snap back to his senses and realize who he was hugging. He pushed himself back, some red on his face. "I mean...It's about time you realized I'm brilliant."

Qrow smiled, "Well of course you are! I'm your father after all!" Shiro scoffed but Qrow wasn't done. "Your mother would be so proud of you"

That shut Shiro down. He went back to his rules. That was two times his father brought up his mother. Maybe he was just in a reminiscing mood, but it worried Shiro.

Qrow held up the package. "Your mother would want you to have this. I want you to have this. Think of it as a 'Welcome to Beacon' present"

Shiro grabbed the package, opening it hesitantly. It was an old Atlas coat, mostly white with a zipper in the front. The top portion around the shoulders were a deep crimson that connected with a dark grey hood.

"We bought that right after we found out she was pregnant with you. It was one of the weirdest, but happiest days of my life. We always planned on giving it to you earlier, but it was hard. Its one of the last mementos I have from her….now its yours"

That was deep. Shiro clung to the jacket like a lifeline.

"Well put it on!" Qrow said getting some of his old gusto back.

Shiro turned the jacket around, throwing it over himself before zipping up the front. It felt...warm. "Qrow...Dad. Thank you. I will make you proud" Shrio held the sleeves of his new jacket.

Qrow looked at his prodigy. He felt a swelling inside his chest. "You already have"
