Krissy was nervous as she walked through the corridors of the BAU, not sure if it was a good sign Jack wanted her to meet in his office or a bad one. If he was about to arrest her for aiding a murderer, surely, he'd want to do it in public? Or was he just trying to save himself the shame? She had told Hannibal that Jack was wanting to bring both he and Chilton in for further questioning, and had left it at that. God knows what Hannibal would do if he truly thought his time was up. Jack's door was wide open as she approached, her father sitting by his desk, his hands clasped out in front of him... besides a tape recorder. What had Chilton recorded?

"Do I need a lawyer present?" Krissy announced, as Jack gave her a sad look.

"You trust me that little?" Jack replied, making her brow furrow, as she closed the door.

"I don't think I trust anyone anymore" She admitted, staying where she was by the door.

"We have arrested Chilton. He was found with Doctor Abel Gideon's mutilated corpse and two dead FBI agents. His DNA is all over the crime scene. It couldn't be more perfect. Case closed...until I found this in Chilton's possessions" Jack explained, as he turned the tape recorder on.

He's alive.

Krissy's own voice echoed through the room, followed by a few moments of static before Will spoke up, in a sullen tone.

How?

I stopped Matthew Brown. I killed him. And I saved Hannibal.

Krissy tensed when she remembered the words that had flowed from her lips next. The conversation had happened in the privacy room, it couldn't be used in court, so why had Chilton recorded them? For his own sick pleasure?

"Look, whatever that tape says, Chilton has manipulated the words—" Krissy began, but Jack held his hand up, his eyes narrowed.

"Sit, down, Krissy" He told her, as she shook her head, ruefully, but did as she was told.

"I want the truth. All of it" Jack insisted.

"You just said yourself that Chilton killed all those people. This is just his desperate attempt to—" Krissy started, but Jack suddenly cut her off.

"Don't. No more lies" Jack exclaimed, fury burning behind his eyes.

Krissy opened her mouth to reply, but quickly clamped her lips shut a moment later. What could she say? He knew too much now. Leaning back in his chair, Jack fast-forwarded the tape, before pressing play at a passage he had listened to over and over.

Krissy. If you follow down this road...he will kill you.

I'm not running, Will. I don't...I can't leave.

You didn't save Hannibal from me, did you? You saved him for yourself.

I've made promises to him. And to you. I'll get you out of here, whatever it takes.

Don't think you can play on Hannibal Lecter's emotions. He doesn't have any.

There was a heavy pause on the tape, as Krissy kept her eyes squarely on the tape recorder, not daring to look at her father's expression.

Maybe I know him better than you do.

Jack paused the tape, a few seconds of static, followed by nothing but deathly silence. The tape was circumstantial evidence at best, it would never sway a jury's opinion...but her already suspicious father? Her lies had finally caught up with her, and now she had to deal with the consequences. She forced her gaze up to meet her father's expecting to find nothing but disappointment there, but instead, she found...sadness?

"I'm sorry" Jack spoke up, causing her to frown.

"...For what?" She questioned, not understanding his reaction.

"For not trying to understand what you've been through. For not helping you. You're my daughter, and you can't even tell me the truth. What kind of father does that make me?" Jack murmured, shaking his head.

"You've always tried your best. I know that" She replied.

"I introduced you to Hannibal Lecter. I...I thought he was good for you. I put you down this path" Jack went on.

"You make it sound like I've got one foot in the grave" Krissy pointed out, uncomfortably.

"Haven't you? You're playing house with a goddamn serial killer, Krissy! How do you think this ends?" Jack exclaimed, with wide eyes.

"...That tape is never going to stand up in court. You give it to your superiors and they'll just think you've lost your mind. No one will believe you—" Krissy started, but Jack cut her off.

"Just like no one believed you?" Jack announced, tears welling in his eyes.

"Don't look at me like that. Don't look at me like I'm fucking broken. I'm fine! I'm...there's nothing wrong with me! I'm fine!" She insisted, rising from her chair, stuttering over her words.

"Krissy..." Jack sighed, standing upright, holding his hand out as if to calm her.

"No. I know what you're thinking. That this is just like before, right? I'm just being manipulated again. But you're wrong, okay? I know what I'm doing...I do. And I'm happy with Hannibal. I am. I'm fine" She repeated, sounding close to tears herself, as Jack walked around the desk towards her.

"It's okay" Jack told her, reaching out to touch her shoulders, as her face crumbled.

She nodded quickly, biting her inner cheek to stop the sob that was threatening to leave her lips. Was it okay? Was anything that happened to her in the past year okay? She really didn't know anymore.

"You're okay, Krissy. Everything's going to be okay" Jack soothed, as he pulled his daughter into a hug, wrapping his arms around her back.

She clung to him tightly, hiding her face in his chest as she began to cry, the tears seeming never-ending. She didn't know why she was crying. For herself, for Will, Jack, maybe even Hannibal. It had all become too much.

"I'm sorry" She cried, her voice muffled and broken.

"I know, honey. We'll figure this out. I promise. I'll make everything alright" Jack insisted, squeezing her a little tighter.

Bang!

The pair sprung apart as they heard the unmistakable sound of gunshot ringing out. Jack was racing out of the door in an instant, reaching for his own gun. He seemed to know exactly where the gunshot would have come from, as he wrenched a door open a few hallways away. Krissy was close on his heels as she peered into the room. Miriam was there, a gun clasped in her shaking hands, short gasps leaving her lips, tears staining her cheeks. As she pushed her way into the room, she realised they were in a viewing room, hidden behind a glass adjoined to an interrogation room. Krissy's eyes went wide as she soon found Frederick Chilton lying on the floor nearby, a bullet having gone through his cheek, bleeding profusely on the floor. People were racing around her, as Jack tried to usher her out of the room, while Krissy tried to collect her own thoughts. She supposed she should have felt bad for Chilton, guilty even. But instead, she realised she was glad. Hannibal was safe. For now. And despite everything, that seemed to matter most to her now.

"I don't like it" Will murmured, pulling his winter coat closer to him, keeping an eye on the fishing pole leaning against his legs.

"How do you think I feel? If I saw any other way, I'd do it...but Krissy is right. If she pulls away from Hannibal now, he'll only pull her closer. Until we can find a way to get the son of a bitch locked up for good, whether I like it or not, she has to stay by his side. For her safety" Jack sighed.

"There are other ways to dispose of a man like Hannibal Lecter" Will pointed out, as Jack shot him a look.

"Not legal ways" Jack reminded the younger man.

"Has that ever stopped you in the past?" Will questioned, quirking an eyebrow.

"Trust me, I'd like nothing more than to put a bullet in that man. But we can't. I need you on my side with this, Will" Jack insisted, earning a nod in response.

"So, how exactly do you plan to catch out the good doctor? He's a...slippery individual" Will warned.

"And he's only just killed. So, how do you catch a fish that isn't hungry?" Jack inquired.

"Change your tactics. Use live bait that moves and excites them to action. That's where Krissy comes in" Will suggested, making Jack grimace.

"I don't want to think about my daughter exciting a serial killer, Will" Jack huffed.

"She's got to make him bite even though he's not hungry" Will exclaimed, as Jack slowly nodded.

"Make him act on instinct. He's always a predator" Jack mumbled, wondering how he had been blind for so long.

"You have to create a reality where only you and the fish exist. Your lure is the one thing he wants, despite everything he knows. And if there's one thing I know for sure...it's that Hannibal wants Krissy. He wants all of her" Will explained.

"And if we make a wrong move, he swims away?" Jack sighed, knowing how dangerous their plan was.

"Or worse" Will pointed out, watching Jack tense.

"I need you beside Krissy on this. I need someone protecting her from the front line. Can I count on you, Will?" Jack pushed.

"I still care about her, Jack. Despite what you might believe" Will answered.

"That's what I'm worried about. You can't let your feelings get in the way. Not for either of them" Jack stated, earning another nod from Will.

"I'm a good fisherman, Jack" Will insisted, with a slight smirk.

"You hook him...I'll land him" Jack replied, as the two shared a smug look.

Krissy and Will sat in a tense silence in Hannibal's dining room, awaiting the chef to bring out his latest masterpiece. It felt strange sharing the dinner table with someone other than Hannibal. She had become so used to it only being them. Still, despite the tension between them, she had missed Will. He always had a calming presence on her. And she needed that now more than ever. Jack was expecting her to throw Hannibal under the bus soon enough, but was that what she wanted?

"Truite saumonée au bleu with vegetables and broth, served with a hollandaise sauce on the side. Beautiful fish, Will" Hannibal announced, as he placed their meals in front of them, as extravagant as ever.

"It was my turn to provide the meat" Will stated, taking a sip of his wine, making Krissy roll her eyes.

"Have you got that cannibal pun out of your system now?" She huffed, as Will gave her an amused look.

"It helps put me at ease" Will replied, in a teasing tone.

"Your apprehension is more than understandable, Will. You have been wounded. We have all been. Which is why we need to move past apologies and forgiveness. We will absorb this experience. It will change us. Well, we are all Nietzscheian fish in that regard" Hannibal explained, as he sat at the head of the table.

"Makes us tastier" Will pointed out.

"Yes, it does" Hannibal agreed, his eyes flickering over to Krissy's for a moment, sharing a heated glance.

"The greatest crime now would be to walk away from what we've shared and suffered. In many ways, we need each other. We are the only ones who will know what this feels like" Hannibal told them.

"Being taken under the wing of a serial killer?" Krissy suggested, quirking an eyebrow.

"Tell me, Doctor. Does that make our meat more flavoursome?" Will added as a smirk pulled at Hannibal's lips.

"I wouldn't know, Will. Not yet" Hannibal answered, hearing Will audibly gulp at his words.

"And what exactly happens to the collateral damage you leave in your wake? Do you see it as only trimming the unnecessary fat?" Will pushed.

"You would like to see Abigail" Hannibal guessed.

"And Beverley. I don't see that as an unreasonable request" Will muttered, a harsh tone to his words.

"Would you? Visit your former home?" Hannibal asked, turning to Krissy, and placing his hand over hers.

Home.

She had spent so much time in the house that he spoke of being terrified, for her life, for her future. She wasn't sure how she felt about returning. Hannibal's hand stayed touching hers, a warm presence. Comforting and possessive at the same time. Will's eyes followed this action, his shoulders going rigid. Krissy wondered if Hannibal wasn't the only one with a possessive streak.

"I would" She replied, as a smile grew on Hannibal's lips, his touch still lingering.

"This fish is delicious" Will spoke up, in a strained tone.

"Isn't it?" Hannibal smirked, his eyes flickering between the pair, appearing happier than he had been in some time.

Early the next day, a body had been found in peculiar circumstances. A woman, dead, stitched into a horse's womb. Krissy had heard of some odd things in her time, but this one stood out. Which was why Jack had requested not only Will's help but hers as well. It wasn't as if he could ask Hannibal anymore. There was only one suspect. Peter Bernardone. He used to work at the stables where the woman was found, and fit the profile that Will had constructed. They found him surrounded by animals, from dogs and cats to birds and monkeys. Peter seemed to have a love for anything in the animal kingdom. Her father's questioning of the man was clearly going nowhere, his brashness only spooking him. After a few minutes of hushed convincing, he finally allowed her to have a conversation with the man by herself.

"Have you always liked animals, Peter?" She questioned, earning a rigid nod.

"From birth. From then" Peter answered.

"Animals are easier to love than humans, right? They're less...messy" She theorised.

"We...I can understand them" Peter explained, as Krissy crouched down to place her fingers against a cage, with a ginger cat enclosed inside.

"They sense things about us..." Krissy trailed off, watching as the shy cat approached, sniffing her fingers for a moment, before pressing its head against the cage to stroke.

"She...she doesn't like people much. She likes you" Peter exclaimed, watching the interaction.

"It's like you said. Animals understand us. I understand cats. Their independent, but even they want to be loved" She shrugged, as Peter crouched down, flickering the cage door open, making sure to look away from her.

"I like them too" Peter replied, shyly, as the ginger cat began rubbing its head against Krissy's shin.

She knelt down on the floor, allowing the cat to jump up onto her lap, surprising her a little with how friendly they were.

"What's her name?" Krissy asked.

"She's n-new. She doesn't have a name. Not...not yet" Peter admitted, as Krissy pursed her lips.

"Did the horse have a name? The one that woman was found in?" She inquired.

"Silvie. She had, um...grey hair on her back. I liked her" Peter sighed.

"She was going to die, right? After her foal died? And Sarah was already dead. I guess whoever stitched her in there was trying to help her" Krissy went on, stroking the cat slowly on her lap.

"I don't...I don't know" Peter stuttered, tensely.

"Maybe they wanted to give her life again?" Krissy suggested, earning a short nod.

"But why would they do it so publicly? Surely, they knew they would be found?" Krissy asked.

"I think it's what they wanted" Peter mumbled.

"Because they want to stop?" She questioned, hearing a sharp intake of breath from Peter.

"They want it to stop" Peter answered, as the realisation hit Krissy.

Peter wasn't the one who killed the woman. But he knew who did. And by the sound of it, they had killed before. It seemed that there was another serial killer in her sights.

"You seem angry" Hannibal announced, as she took a sip of wine, leaning against the desk in his office.

She had told her father what she had found out and returned to Hannibal's side. She was only telling the pair parts of how she was really thinking and feeling. She felt like she was playing them both, but for the same reason. To keep them alive. But she knew sooner or later, that fate would tip the balance one way or the other.

"Someone's been playing with this man's mind. Because he's vulnerable. A scapegoat. So yeah, it's angered me" Krissy admitted, after telling Hannibal about the latest case.

"Your moral compass is quite complex and scarred. But something that still guides you" Hannibal stated, coming to stand beside her, close enough that she could feel his body heat.

"Well, it's not like I can tell right and wrong anymore after being with you" She retorted, taking another sip of her wine.

"Would you like to kill them? Whomever this murderer is?" Hannibal inquired, his eyes searching her face.

She knew the answer he wanted to hear. So, she said it. Not for any other reason, she insisted to herself.

"Yes" She answered, watching as he smiled.

"We could kill him together" Hannibal suggested, his tone almost nervous...almost.

"Is that a fantasy of yours, Doctor Lecter?" She smirked, placing her wine glass on the desk.

"I have regrettably been indisposed during many of your killings. I have been able to savour the aftermath but miss your becoming. To see you let go of your inhibitions...it would please me" Hannibal explained.

"Make you feel less alone?" Krissy asked, her hands trailing up to brush over his collar.

"Perhaps" He replied, in a soft tone.

"Well then...it sounds like a date" She smirked, as he shared her expression.

He leant forward to press his lips against hers, enjoying the familiarity it now brought him. They both found comfort in each other's embrace. An affection that everyone else fell short of. Hannibal slowly pulled away, his hand brushing through her hair, fingers playing with her brunette locks for a moment.

"You should return to Jack. I doubt he will appreciate this visit" Hannibal stated, a reluctant tone to his voice.

"Are you growing bored of me, Doctor Lecter?" Krissy teased, finding that she didn't want to leave yet.

"Impossible" Hannibal told her, reaching down to take her hands in his, pressing a kiss to the back of each of her hands, the romantic gesture causing her heart to soar.

"Will we be dining alone tonight?" Krissy questioned, as he nodded.

A soft knock at his door, had Krissy biting her lip, realising his next client must have arrived. Hannibal's hand lingered on hers for a few moments, only proving how touch-starved they both remained.

"Until tonight" He exclaimed, as he led her towards the door.

"I look forward to it" She smiled, as he opened the door, his eyes narrowing when he found out who had knocked.

Margot Verger. The older woman's eyes instantly found Krissy's, before flickering down to where Hannibal's hand was resting on the small of her back. She didn't seem surprised to see the pair together.

"I believed our appointment was not for another hour, Miss Verger" Hannibal pointed out.

"It's not. But you are not who I was searching for, Doctor Lecter. You are" Margot admitted, turning back to Krissy.

"Oh?" Krissy replied, with interest.

"It is as you said in our last therapy session, I am still alive. I need to go on living. Making new friends. Friends who share similar experiences" Margot explained.

"I'm glad I could be of help" Hannibal mumbled, stiffly.

"I was thinking we could take another walk together. I found our last one rather...eye-opening" Margot went on, as Hannibal tilted his head.

"I wasn't aware you had become such fast friends" Hannibal stated, a cold look in his eyes.

"And I wasn't aware it was ethical to have relations with a patient" Margot retorted.

"Past patient. And yes, let's take that walk" Krissy insisted, all but ushering Margot away, as she had felt Hannibal's hand tighten on her back, almost subconsciously.

"I'll see you at dinner" Krissy said, leaning up to press a kiss against Hannibal's cheek before following the older woman down the corridor.

As soon as they were out of Hannibal's office, she gave Margot a look, who appeared far too smug. If she thought she was going to be able to get one up against Hannibal, she was going to be sorely mistaken.

"What was that?" Krissy scoffed.

"My thoughts exactly. I suppose I can see why you thought his techniques are unorthodox. Does he sleep with all his patients? Or is it only the pretty ones?" Margot exclaimed, making Krissy snort.

"Worried he'll make a move on you?" Krissy teased.

"I'm afraid he'll find he doesn't have the right parts for my proclivities" Margot answered.

"I don't think that would stop him" Krissy mumbled, with amusement.

"It certainly never stopped my brother" Margot huffed, tensely, as Krissy's smile fell.

"...Shit. No wonder you tried to kill the son of a bitch" Krissy stated.

"And regrettably missed" Margot added, as they turned a street corner.

"You could take Hannibal's advice? Try, try again?" Krissy pointed out, as Margot shook her head.

"If my brother dies, in the absence of a legitimate heir, all the money goes to the Church. I will be left with...nothing" Margot informed her.

"Sometimes nothing is better. If it means freedom" Krissy suggested.

"Freedom to do what? I would have no money. No family, no friends. What sort of life is that?" Margot muttered, as Krissy gave her a shrug.

"Well, that's not quite true. We've become fast friends, remember?" Krissy insisted, nudging her with her arm.

"Not many people would want to be friends with an attempted killer" Margot replied.

"Better than the sister of a serial killer, trust me. It's like a massive turn off" Krissy exclaimed.

"But not to a man like Hannibal Lecter" Margot suggested, her eyes narrowed.

"Why the sudden interest in my relationship with your psychiatrist?" Krissy inquired.

"For someone who appears so clever, you are rather oblivious" Margot smirked, only confusing Krissy further.

"What does that mean? Margot?" Krissy complained, getting nothing more than a grin in response.

That evening, she received a rambling call from Will, stating that they had found the real killer. Peter's social worker, Clark Ingram. Jack had arrested him, but with no other evidence apart from Peter's word, he had been forced to release him. Will wouldn't stand for this and informed her he had already requested Hannibal's help and wanted her there too. For what purpose, Krissy wasn't sure. To pull him back from the edge, or urge him on?

They seemed to be too late when they arrived at the stables, finding Peter on the ground beside a bloody horse, stitching up its abdomen. A hammer covered in blood was by his side, what looked like hair matted into the red substance. The three of them cautiously approached the man, who appeared lost in thought.

"Peter...is your social worker in that horse?" Will asked, as Krissy gave Hannibal a look, unable to believe what she was hearing.

"Yes. I used to have...used to have a horrible fear of...of hurting anything. But...he helped me get over that. Feels so abnormal" Peter murmured, putting down the needle and thread.

"An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behaviour" Hannibal stated.

"I think...think he deserves to die" Peter announced, in a sullen tone.

Krissy couldn't help but agree, feeling no sympathy for the killer inside the horse. He got what he deserved as far as she was concerned.

"But you didn't deserve to kill him, Peter...I want you to come with me" Will exclaimed, crouching down to touch the man's back.

He slowly helped to pull an unsteady Peter to his feet, who lost his footing for a moment and would have fallen if Hannibal didn't reach out to take his arm. It was a strangely human response. Something that Krissy wouldn't expect from Hannibal without an audience. He didn't need to keep his person suit on with them. They watched as Will led Peter away, leaving them alone with the dead horse and animals in their pens.

"Do you feel sorry for him?" Krissy couldn't help but question.

"I do not see him as the pigs that populate most of this world. More the sacrificial lamb" Hannibal answered.

"I'll take that as a yes" She stated, as he gave her an amused look.

"My ability to feel emotion still surprises you" He pointed out, as she nodded.

"I find it difficult to know where the stitching of your person suit ends" She confessed, watching as he wandered over to a pen with a lone sheep inside.

"Would you believe that I feel the same for you?" Hannibal replied.

"I don't have a person suit" Krissy frowned.

"Of course, you do. Everyone does, to a degree. But yours is far deeper and well-orchestrated compared to most. I could see that the very first time we met" Hannibal informed her, reaching down to stroke the head of the sheep that approached him.

"You've spent time around farm animals" Krissy suggested, as he nodded, continuing to pet the sheep.

"My parents owned many animals. I spent my early years caring for them" He confessed, as a small smile grew on her lips.

Before she could say anything else, she heard a disturbing squelching sound from behind her, whipping around to find fingers emerging from inside the horse. Bile rose in her throat as she watched the stitches be pulled apart at the animal's organs flop onto the ground, as a bloody hand shot out. Hannibal barely reacted as they watched a middle-aged man drenched in blood pull himself out of the horse, gasping for air. Hannibal and Krissy watched in silence as he pushed himself to his feet with a growl, grabbing the hammer from the floor, his intentions clear.

"Well, that was disgusting" Krissy grimaced, as he twisted around to face them.

"Mr Ingram. Might want to crawl back in there if you know what's good for you" Hannibal advised, making Krissy's brow furrow.

Hannibal reached out to take her arm, pulling her away as he turned them around, to see Will approaching, his gun raised in the air. The look on his face sent chills down Krissy's spine.

"Officer...I'm the victim here" Clark Ingram panted, dropping the hammer and falling to his knees.

"I'm not an officer. I'm Peter's friend" Will told him, his shaking hands keeping his gun trained on the man's head.

"Peter's confused" Ingram insisted, in a cold tone.

Will lowered his gun just an inch, his eyes dropping to the floor before his whole body seemed to twitch. Something that seemed familiar, but not like Will. Like Peter.

"I'm not" Will retorted, gripping the gun tighter.

"Pick up the hammer" Will exclaimed, anger laced into his tone.

"Will..." Hannibal trailed off, his eyes flickering between the pair.

"Pick it up" Will snapped, cocking the gun, taking a step closer to Clark Ingram, who was now shaking.

"It won't feel the same, Will. It won't feel like killing me" Hannibal warned, noticing that Krissy had stayed quiet so far, a lost expression on her face as if she wasn't sure what to do.

"It doesn't have to" Will retorted, eyes never leaving Ingram's.

"You did the best anyone could do for Peter, but don't do this for him. If you're going to do this, Will...you have to do it for yourself" Hannibal said, in a soothing tone, standing close to Will.

"P-please don't" Ingram begged, as Hannibal shot him a warning look.

"You would be wise to remain silent, Mr Ingram" Hannibal stated.

"Will. This is not the reckoning you promised yourself" Hannibal whispered in his ear, watching as Will clenched his jaw.

Reacting instinctively, Hannibal's hand shot out just as Will pulled the trigger, stopping the bullet from leaving the chamber. Clark Ingram sobbed in relief, as Will stayed where he was as if stuck in a trance. Finally, Krissy acted, reaching out to take the gun from Will's shaking hands, sharing a heated look with Hannibal, unseen by the others. They heard Ingram's sobs slowly turn to laughter, as he realised, he was going to live.

"You shouldn't have done that" Will muttered, glaring at Hannibal.

A loud gunshot rang out a second later, making even Hannibal flinch, as their eyes darted to Ingram, who now had a bullet wound oozing from his chest. The man let out a shaky gasp, before falling forward, the bullet having gone straight through his heart, as the shooter had aimed for. Hannibal pulled his eyes away, finding the gun in Krissy's steady hand, an emotion on her face he couldn't put his finger on.

"Like you said, Hannibal...we have to do this for ourselves" Krissy exclaimed, as a smirk twitched onto Hannibal's lips.

"With all my knowledge and intrusion, I could never entirely predict you both. I can feed the caterpillar, and I can whisper through the chrysalis, but...what hatches, follows its own nature and is beyond me" Hannibal smiled, as he took his place standing in between the pair, almost appearing proud.

He finally had everything he ever wanted.
