AN: After this chapter, I will be running a poll on my forum for whether or not I should include other people from the Naruto verse. I can't really figure out any way to get to it other than you going to my favorites and checking the forums there, so you can do that.
"Start!"
The upperclassman threw the ball up into the air, while it climbed to reach its peak, Midorima internally questioned why Naruto was the one doing the tip-off.
'He's the shorter of the two by a bit. Maybe Sasuke isn't confident in his jumping?' He would get his answer soon when the ball finally reached the peak and started its descent.
Before Midorima could even get off the floor, Naruto was already in the air and climbing toward the ball at incredible speeds. By the time Midorima had reached the highest point of his jump, Naruto had grabbed the ball and thrown it back to Sasuke who jetted past him.
The green-haired SG looked at Naruto as he pushed up his glasses. 'His reaction time is near perfect and that explosive power is no joke. I also have a sneaking suspicion that wasn't the highest he can go.'
"Nice one, Naruto!" Sasuke said as he came face to face with Takao who was obviously surprised that Naruto beat Midorima in a tip-off despite the more than 5-inch height difference.
Now all he had to do was capitalize on it. He drove forward to the right at a moderate speed, and Takao was able to follow him easily. He 'tch'ed and did a spin to the left without slowing down at all, which surprised everyone watching.
On the sidelines, one of the other first year's turned to their coach. "What was that!? He just spun mid-drive without any balance delay after!"
The coach didn't tear his eyes from the game but responded. "That, was a perfectly executed spin. Normally when performing a spin move, you plan the foot on the side you're going to spin to. When you spin in the opposite direction of the drive, this greatly slows you down, seeing as you're completely switching positions which causes you to lose some balance. But he used his body to roll off of Takao and push off to the left at the same time, keeping himself steady and allowing him to maintain speed without the risk of falling."
He finally looked away from the game for a second and at the rest of the team. "It's a move primarily used in professional or high-level play, considering it takes the skill to predict where your opponent will be so that you can properly roll off of them. Otherwise, the fall you experience will be even bigger than a normal one."
Back in the game, Sasuke had gotten through Takao and managed to score a simple layup. Now it was Midorima and Takao's turn on the offensive.
The brown-haired boy slowly dribbled up the court, taking in everything. The positions of Naruto and Sasuke, how open Midorima exactly was, and things like that.
Even though there was a large size difference between Naruto and Midorima, the short blond was holding his own and defending against Midorima competently.
"Your defense is fruitless." Then, instead of trying to push forward as he had been for a while, the bespectacled boy took a large step back. Immediately, the ball was passed to him.
He brought his arm up in a clean and practiced motion and shot from beyond the ark. The ball rolled off of his fingertips and came up in one of the highest arks Naruto had ever seen before splashing in the basket. Nothing but net. The tall SG pushed up his glasses with a neutral face.
And there it was. The genius three-point shot that earned Midorima his place in the Generation of Miracles. Sasuke had watched back some tapes from previous games and saw that Midorima could shoot perfectly from anywhere on the court, even the opposite side.
Sasuke turned to his blond teammate. "Damm, it really is as high as the rumors and tapes say. Dobe, do you still think you can stop it?"
"Yeah, just give me some time. For now, you'll need to keep up in a shoot-out with him." Naruto was focused on Midorima, even as he switched positions with Sasuke on their next drive. Now Sasuke was SG and Naruto was PG meaning their matchup switched as well.
The focused blond dribbled up the court quickly. Rather than the normal smile you would see on his face when playing basketball, there was only concentration. All of a sudden Sasuke took a large step back from Midorima and a pass found itself in his hands. He was mirroring the exact place the Midorima had been in during the last play, down to the foot placement.
He jumped and brought his hands up in a familiar and perfect motion before his wrist shot forward and then recoiled like a whip, letting the ball fly through the air in an exact copy of Midorima's shot. It even led to the same result. Nothing but net.
As he landed, Sasuke pushed up the imaginary glasses he had on with a neutral face.
The Sidelines
"Coach! What was that?!" A different first year from the before yelled out.
The coach looked just as surprised as his player but responded. "I think that it's something similar to Kise from the Generation of Miracles ability. He copied the entire move, even the glasses push up that Midorima normally does. Even I never knew he had such an ability."
While they talked, students filtered into the gym. Some had been called by their friends or boyfriends to witness the special practice, and others normally came in to watch one of Tokyo's king teams practice.
"Once this is over I'm going to have to address everyone. No videos about this can be released right now. These guys are our secret weapons, and I'd like to keep it like that."
Naruto did not react to what Sasuke had just done, meaning he knew that the ravenette could do it all along. That was to be assumed though. The two were practically brothers.
"Nice one, Sasuke."
"Hn."
The blond all of a sudden looked taken aback and a little angry, "I'm doing my part teme! I've just got to get into my groove!"
"Hn,"
The blond begrudgingly agreed to whatever Sasuke said, "Fine you bastard...I'm only listening to you this once."
While the team was perplexed, Takao and Midorima ran down the court, they were on the offensive. Knowing that Sasuke could copy Midorima, the two chose to beat their opponents in a game of stamina. If your body wasn't used to doing something, you often got tired faster than someone who was used to the motion.
And so they relentlessly attacked. The two teams battled back and forth. In the middle of this, students filtered into the gym. They had heard there was a small game going on with Midorima of the Generation of Miracles.
Back to the game.
First, Midorima would shoot a three, then Sasuke would copy it. Five three-pointers later, Sasuke was looking a bit more tired than Midorima. It was to be expected, Sasuke hadn't trained the same way as Midorima. He didn't practice shots from beyond the ark for hours. Sasuke just wasn't built the same way as Midorima.
The aforementioned green-haired teen successfully knocked down another three, this was troublesome. As they had been doing for a while, Naruto and Sasuke ran up the court. A pass straight to the chest to Sasuke who was behind the ark. He would let it go, let it fall through the air like a shooting star.
But something was different this time. He was tired. His balance was off, his arm felt slightly sore, and his head was starting to hurt. All of that led to the ball hitting the rim and bouncing off.
This was when Naruto stepped up. He disappeared from Takao's direct sight and was all of a sudden behind the point guard. As the ball bounced off the rim, Naruto started his jump. The blond's strong legs crouched incredibly low before he shot off into the air like a rocket.
His right arm was brought up and intercepted the ball after the bounce, and like it hit a spring, the ball shot back toward the hoop. This time it went in and Naruto was left hanging from the rim with one hand.
Some of the students in the gym were too surprised to speak. A few that had pulled out their phones to start recording nearly dropped their devices.
Naruto let go of the rim and fell to the ground, landing on his feet during the strange silence. All he did was turn to face Midorima, point to himself, and then Midorima with an unsettling smirk on his face.
"I'm taking your spot, damn four-eyes!" And with that single sentence, the silence ended. The few students in the gym either cheered or talked animatedly about what had just happened.
The game soon resumed its normal pace, with Takao and Midorima driving the ball back up the court. Naruto had gone back to being a shooting guard, so he guarded against Midorima as he did before. Despite his earlier statement, Naruto and Sasuke would still be down by two points if Midorima made his next shot. Because they had only made threes thus far, other than Sasuke's opening layup and Naruto's recent dunk, the brothers in all but blood were down in terms of scoring.
This time, Takao didn't pass to Midorima, instead, he took advantage of the recovering Sasuke and drove straight through the center and made a simple layup.
After that, Sasuke was back to driving the ball up the court. Sasuke basically walked down the length of the court, and once he reached the arc he passed the ball to Naruto who was at the left corner being guarded by Takao. The blond spun on his heel and let the ball go up in a high arc, it was lower than Midorima's and Sasuke's but those two weren't normal, and his shot flew just as straight. Somehow, to the surprise of everyone there, the shot made it. It wasn't anything but net, there was a ton of rim action before it finally tipped in and counted as 3 points.
Naruto had fallen to the ground the second the ball had left his hands, so he hadn't seen if he scored. When he stood up to Sasuke slowly walking up to him with a smirk he knew the outcome.
"Good one, dobe."
"Ha! I didn't think that was gonna go in! Oh God, I feel lucky right now. Let's try this out."
They let Midorima and Takao come back and score another three. They had been conserving their strength for the next play.
Instead of Sasuke bringing the ball down, It was Naruto. They hadn't switched positions again, this was just Sasuke trusting Naruto with his ideas.
Naruto came inside the perimeter and Midorima was on him like tape on paper or Naruto to a ramen shop either analogy worked. The blond had no escape routes, or so everyone thought.
He started off relatively simple, an under-the-leg crossover. When the ball came to his left hand he went behind the back and the ball was back in his right hand. He drove forward a foot or so and cut back on a dime. They were relatively simple moves, but they were performed with such speed that one would think that they were some of the hardest things in the world to perform. Another crossover came, this time a normal one, but the second it touched his hand the ball was pushed even farther to the left, this time with a high bounce.
Naruto ran to it with Midorima close behind, there was no way that he would allow the blond to score here. Naruto caught the ball in his right hand and it was pushed again and he dashed to the right. Midorima tried pushing himself to the right as well, but he failed to get his foot a proper hold on the ground, and...he slipped.
The shooting guard faltered, nearly falling onto his ass. Something that hadn't happened since he pissed Akashi off back in middle school. The two had played their best but Akashi completely destroyed him. He fell more than 12 times in that one game, the most humiliating moment of his career, something he never wanted to experience again.
The crowd watching erupted into cheer as Naruto drove it up the middle and went for the easy dunk. The move he had just performed was called the Shammgod. It was a popular movement technique in America that was extremely dangerous and effective if you managed to pull it off but seeing as you left the ball out to bait defenders on purpose, it was not wise to use it outside of a one on one situation or when not isolated.
Midorima looked at Naruto while he finished his drive. There was no merit in trying to stop him, the only advantage they had was that their opponents couldn't accurately score for three.
"We can't afford to lose to the new guys on their first day here. Come on, let's show them why we're Shutoku's dream duo!" Takao's optimism was actually appreciated for once by the green-haired high schooler.
Takao and Midorima got the ball again, and Takao wasted no time. From the other side of the court, he got into his shooting form. Takao passed him the ball and he went up. The release was slower than when he was closer, but that familiar polish was still on it. And the result was the same as any other shot of his, a clean swish.
Sasuke realized he should have expected as much, but said nothing. There was no reason to throw a fit about it now. Just as Naruto checked the ball in to Sasuke, the coach blew his whistle.
"Halftime!" Why hadn't they been playing with quarters? Maybe the coach was so engrossed in the game that he forgot. Maybe it was something else, it wasn't like the coach would just tell them.
Naruto looked up at scoreboard with a huge grin. The score was 39 to 42 in Midorima and Takao's favor. That didn't disappoint him though, it excited him. It'd been a long time since he could play against someone the same way he was playing against Midorima.
"Oi! Sasuke!" A small smirk played on the raventte's features, not one of someone who was losing, but one of someone who had an ensured victory, "Guess what!?"
"What dobe?"
"I think I can finally use that!"
"Hoh? Really?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty much sure of it!"
"You probably shouldn't, you know how you get when you use it and I don't wanna have to do most of the work while you're out of commission."
"Ha! I'll be fine! You know I've been training with it! I can last more than five minutes now!"
All he got in response was a facepalm. "Go ahead and throw our chance of victory in the trash. I'm not gonna use I.M. simply because you're using A.M."
Meanwhile with Midorima and Takao.
"They're good. But that doesn't matter, we'll still win, eh Midorima?" Takao tried cheering the green haired SG up, but the boy was too deep into his thoughts to notice. He was also muttering something about their opponents, something Takao could barely pick up on.
"I should have asked their signs before playing them, Cancer is a bad matchup against 3 signs today. But other than that we're supposed to be lucky. I also didn't bring my lucky item since it wasn't a game. A foolish mistake. I will bring a lucky item to every practice now. And that Naruto, he plays a lot like Aomine, he's not as good as him since if he was we wouldn't have a chance." Takao sweatdropped at his teammate's words. They were mostly the superstitions that he claimed helped him do his best, but the blond playing like Aomine? That was new.
The dark-haired PG sighed and got ready to continue the game. Even if Midorima was a little worried they still had to win. If the original first-year duo was shown up then they might never fully recover their reputation. Or Takao was just being dramatic. But either way, his pride would not allow him to lose, so he finished up his stretches just as the halftime break was finishing.
The two duos walked back onto the court to finish their game. Whoever came out harder at the start of the second half would most likely be the one taking the win, so this next play was crucial.
Takao and Midorima started with the ball seeing as Naruto had won the tip-off in the first half. The blond hadn't forgotten about Midorima's full-court range and was already within blocking distance of the taller teen's shots.
"Uzumaki."
"Yo!"
"What's your sign?"
"Hmm, I think I'm a Libra?"
"Shit. At least you're not a Taurus."
"Eh? Why?"
"It's nothing. Don't worry about it."
"Okay?"
With that, Midorima starts his trek down the court. It wasn't that he was supposed to stay away from Libras today or anything, it's just that most Libra had very high luck, so they would naturally negate any luck the other signs had on their own lucky days with their constant luck. It only got worse when Libra had their own lucky days, in which even the most unlucky of Libra was said to be able to clear out a casino in under an hour.
Today Midorima didn't have his lucky item, so his luck was about equal to Naruto's but could have been higher if only he had brought his lucky item to practice.
When the taller boy reached half-court he passed to Takao who was in front of him to his left. Takao drove in a bit before bringing his arms up to shoot. Strangely enough, right before he shot, the ball wasn't in his hands anymore. It had just vanished. It was only a second later that he felt the ball being snatched from his hands as they twitched, trying to find what was not there, a delayed reaction.
Once he landed and turned around his eyes widened when he saw Naruto bringing the ball up for an easy layup.
Takao and Midorima heard a chuckle coming from behind them. It was Sasuke.
"No matter how many times I see it, it still scares me." With that said, he got ready to play defense again, not that he would even need to with what Naruto was doing.
Midorima just pushed his glasses up on his face and got ready for the next play.
This Naruto was a completely different beast from the one before. He traveled with such speed that it was impossible to catch up to him once he started running. Their only saving grace had been Midorima's 3 pointers, which kept them within the 5 point difference range.
The young Uzumaki hadn't taken any threes since he started his speed shenanigans. He most likely wasn't confident in his ability to make them reliably. If he could, Midorima and Takao would have been blown out of the water much sooner with no chance to catch up.
Only thirteen or so minutes had passed before a timeout had been called, so the sweaty and tired teens were resting. Even Naruto, the one who looked to be straining himself the least before, was panting and collapsed on the ground.
"Something is different with him, but it's not The Zone. It's something completely different. Aomine told me about The Zone before middle school ended, so I know what it entails, but this isn't synonymous with what I know The Zone does." Midorima pushed up his glasses. They had started to slip off of the bridge of his nose.
"What's the difference?"
"Aomine said The Zone "Unlocked your hidden talent" and allowed you to remove the limiters that stopped you from going all out. As a result, all of your physical capabilities increase and your skills seem to become more polished and precise. This is different. All that increased was his speed. He's using the same moves as before, he's just way faster than he was before. Even his strength seems to be the same."
Midorima paused before continuing, a grim expression on his face.
"The most worrying thing about this though is that Aomine isn't the fastest high schooler anymore."
Takao's eyes widened and he glanced toward Naruto and Sasuke who were on the other side of the court.
"But he can't keep this up. The speed comes at a huge cost to his stamina. Formerly we were the ones tired at halftime and Naruto seemed fine. Now he's even more tired than we were before. At the very least we could stand, but that dumb blond can barely move. We just need to stall him out. Once he loses all of his energy, we can win easily."
Midorima said nothing but narrowed his eyes at their opponents.
A panting, collapsed, Naruto muttered cursed under his breath, all directed at one ravenette.
"Sasuke! You should've stopped me!"
"You know what using that technique does to your body." Sasuke looked down at his childhood friend who had collapsed on the ground as soon as a timeout had been called. "You only have yourself to blame. I even warned you before."
"Fuck you teme."
"The same to you dobe."
Naruto sat up with a groan, pouting as he did so. "I shouldn't have used A.M."
"You really shouldn't have."
"Shut up, I wasn't talking to you."
"If you're gonna think out loud, expect people to respond."
"Damn prick."
The normally unfazed Naruto was sheen with sweat and slightly panting now that he had cooled down a bit. Sasuke was still tired, but not as much as Naruto, he was gonna have to do a lot more during the final stretch of this match.
'Damn it. I don't think I can keep our lead all by myself. It'll effectively be a 2 vs 1 situation until Naruto recovers.
Sasuke strolled to the half court line where he would wait for Midorima and Takao to bring the ball up. They were the ones that had called timeout, so naturally they had the ball.
Naruto came up as well, but not with the same energy as before.
Sasuke looked back at his teammate and sighed. Naruto really was an idiot. Of course Sasuke could have forcefully stopped him, but he wasn't sure Naruto would play his best after that. He would pout and sulk like a child until he got to do as he would like.
Soon, their opponents started their drive, a smirk on Takao's face.
"It looks like we don't even have to tire the blond out, he did it for us."
The ball went from Takao to Midorima, the one Naruto was supposed to be on. The two went against each other for a bit, until Midorima got bored and went in for the three. As always the shot hit its target, sinking in for the maximum amount of points.
Midorima looked to Sasuke. "This match is ours to win. Even if your copying abilities can keep us from completely destroying you, you don't stand a fraction of a chance."
"You underestimate me. I'll show you the true power of the Sharingan."
Naruto looked to his teammate, trying to hold in a laugh but ultimately failing. "Woah there, Sasuke, since when have you been a chuuni. Next thing we know you'll be threatening to burn us with the black flames of purgatory that you named Amaterasu or something."
The Uchiha's cheeks gained a very noticeable pink tint. He walked over to his tired teammate and kicked him in the back, hard enough to make him fall over.
Naruto coughed up inhuman amounts of blood and blanched white. The blond laid there motionless for multiple moments before slowly getting up to his feet. When you looked down, any blood that had been there before had seemingly disappeared into thin air.
"Damn bastard," Naruto said weakly as he limped to get on offense.
"Do you think he'll be okay?"
"It's none of our business Takao."
"Okay."
Naruto inbounded the ball to Sasuke who made his way up the court. The copy wheel eye still had some tricks to pull and Sasuke would make full use of them.
Takao kept a close eye on Sasuke from above. His hawk's eye would allow him to see if Naruto started to recover so that they could plan to stop him accordingly.
For some reason, Sasuke had completely abandoned protecting the ball. He bounced it in front of himself even when his opponent was barely a foot away.
A quick swipe for the ball came from Takao, but before he even got past starting the motion, it was out of his reach. Almost like Sasuke knew what he was gonna do. Though it wasn't too difficult to figure out normally.
This time Sasuke advanced, still not protecting the ball. Takao let him pass by and tried to use that one guy from Serin's Eagle Spear. They had similar abilities so he should be able to use them with little issue.
Just as he thrust his hand back to poke the ball out of Sasuke's hands, the ravenette switched the arm he was dribbling with, stopping the Hawk's Spear from working. Takao was able to retract his hand before a foul could be called, but it was close.
Midorima was next. He swiped for the ball and the same thing that happened to Takao happened to him. Sasuke stopped his attempt to steal the ball before he even started with a preemptive crossover.
It continued on like this for a bit. Every time Midorima would try anything, Sasuke was able to stop it. Finally, the Uchiha put up a three after getting Midorima off balance.
69 - 74
It was still in Midorima and Takao's favor, but the gap hadn't widened. That was good.
The original Shūtoku duo inbounded the ball and came up against Sasuke with Takao leading. A similar thing to what happened on offense happened here. Sasuke cat off every route he wanted to try.
For a second, Sasuke lagged behind and Takao capitalized, blitzing past his fellow black-haired teen's right side. But he realized his mistake a second too late. With his Hawk's Eye, he saw as Sasuke shifted his weight onto his back foot, his right arm shot backward and was in perfect line with the ball. No chance for reaction, no time for a crossover. Pulling a foul probably wouldn't work.
Takao was stuck.
As such, the ball was knocked out of his arms. He chased after the ball but an orange clothed blur passed him by rolling off of his body.
'He can act immediately after using an Eagle Spear?! Even Itsuki (The creator) and I have to rely on our teammates to get the ball!' Even though Takao had thought all of this, the shock was visible on his face even if the words could be heard.
Sasuke and his eyes met, piercing ruby met shocked grey. Takao nearly flinched under the intense gaze of Sasuke.
The ball was recovered by the Uchiha and said the boy ran down the court, stopping to pull up a three he had copied earlier on in the game which went in without much trouble.
"Shit. I don't think this will be as easy as we thought."
Midorima and Takao's opponent used his jersey to wipe the sweat off of his face, not bothering to look their way as if they weren't worth his time.
He was panting quickly and sweating profusely, it was clear that he couldn't go on like this for long. It was only a matter of time.
"Four minutes left till full time!"
The time that they may have not had.
