"Hold my hand," Kate instructed as the elevator landed on the fourth floor. Aaron put his tiny hand in hers as they stepped out. "Do you remember what we're doing?"
"Muffins for the girl and visit Daddy!" Aaron squealed the last two words, excited to see his father. Kate loved the bond the two men had.
"Her name is Robin," Kate reminded him.
"Like Batman!"
"Just like Batman, Goober."
"Daddy!!" Aaron yelled when they entered the practice.
"Shhh, baby inside voices. Daddy's working."
Jack stood in the doorway, kneeling down to pick Aaron up when he ran to him. "There's my big boy!"
"Hi," Robin said softly. "I'm Robin." Kate studied Robin who reminded her of Claire with her long blonde hair and big blue eyes. She also remembered that Jack had a thing for blondes; that was all before her, she told herself.
"I'm Kate and—"
"And I'm Aaron!" The child squealed.
"You look like you could be my little boy," Robin cooed. Kate felt a heat rising from inside her at the mention of another woman being Aaron's mother. The boy wasn't old enough to question why his features were different and Kate wasn't prepared for him to start noticing. Instead, she offered a fake smile. "I'm sorry," Robin put a hand to her chest, "was that inappropriate? I don't mean to offend—"
"It's fine," Kate said quickly. "I brought muffins to welcome you."
"Are those just for her?" Jack teased, grabbing one. "She uses fresh blueberries. She's an amazing cook. And decorator. She decorated this office…" he put a hand on the small of her back, silently acknowledging her.
"Well?" Jack asked as they were cleaning up dinner. "What do you think of Robin?"
"She told Aaron he could be hers. It caught me off guard…" Kate grabbed a plate and washed it by hand.
"C'mon, you don't have to hand wash things. We have a dishwasher."
"What experience does she have?"
"Very little. But she seemed desperate for a job. I felt bad."
"So you hired a girl who is the type you go for and she had no experience?"
"Are you really jealous?"
"I'm not jealous," Kate pouted.
"Hey," he grabbed her stomach and spun her to face him. "You can trust me. I have the woman I want and the kids I want," he rubbed her stomach. "Don't let your hormones get to you." He kissed the top of her head and headed out of the kitchen, leaving Kate to wonder if it really was all in her head.
