"Promise?" Kate asked, biting her lower lip.
"Baby, I promise. I'll be there and every other doctors appointment. I want to see the ultrasound as badly as you do." He felt a rush of relief when Kate beamed, satisfied with his answer.
He never thought of Sarah since they'd divorced but lately he found himself wondering if he'd be as adamant about going to every doctors appointment if it were a child with Sarah. He could admit he put Sarah on the back burner during their marriage. He thought it was because of his career but now that he had Kate, he knew it wasn't the reason. He loved Kate more than he'd ever loved anyone else.
"Did they give you a date yet?"
"I just don't know, they're supposed to call back and see if they can set it while Aaron is at daycare." When she saw his expression, she shrugged. "I don't want to take this time from Aaron for the baby. I want him to like his little brother."
"Sister," Jack corrected. "She's going to be a little girl."
"Why do you want a girl so bad?" She asked.
"I want a little girl who looks and acts just like you," he shrugged casually.
She cupped his face in her hands as she kissed him wildly, praying he could feel how deeply she loved him through his kiss. "You're everything I've ever wanted," she breathed. "I love you." She kissed his cheek before rolling over and turning off the light.
The following night, Jack didn't need to sense the cold shoulder from Kate; she had made it glaringly obvious that she wasn't happy with him.
"Alright, Kate. Let's have it," he started. "What did I do?"
"What did you do?!" She shrieked. "What didn't you do?" When Jack stood in front of her, trying to think, she let out a frustrated growl. "Think hard."
"Kate…"
"The ultrasound!" She yelled. "Did you think I wouldn't notice? That I wouldn't care? You promised, Jack. And you didn't even bother to let me know…" she crossed her arms.
"You…you had the ultrasound? Without me? I didn't—"
"I told Robin. She didn't tell you?" Kate thought for a moment, "why would she lie about that?"
"I'm sure it was a mistake. She's learning a lot—"
"That makes it okay? I knew I should have taken the job myself…"
"There's no point to have you learn all of that and then leave in a few months. Robin will learn…"
"I think she did it on purpose," Kate growled.
"It wasn't. It was a simple mistake," he massaged her shoulders in an attempt to calm her down. "Come on, show me the sonograms," he lead her by the hand to the bed, hoping he had calmed her down.
