Kate paced around the kitchen, nervously wiping the counters. It wasn't like Jack to be so late. She'd never complained of his hours but he cut back to be home with her and Aaron. The fact that he made the decision himself meant everything to her. Her thoughts traveled to worst case scenarios, imagining car accidents or hospitalizations. Her worries were interrupted by the unmistakable sound of Jack's wedding ring on the doorknob.
"Where have you been?" She cried. "I've been worried sick!"
"I'm sorry. I was with Robin."
"Robin?" Kate felt herself growing defensive. There was something about that girl that Kate didn't like. She thought it was that blondes were Jack's type before her but now it felt deeper. There was something sinister about Robin.
"She confided in me and we talked for…" Jack looked at the clock although he knew how late it was. "…hours."
"What do you have to talk to her about?"
"I can't tell you. Doctor patient confidentiality."
"She's not your patient," Kate spat.
"Baby, you don't need to be jealous—"
"I'm not jealous!" Jack pulled her against him and held her there until she relaxed in his embrace. "You worried me."
"I really am sorry," he sighed. "She's having some trouble with an ex," he admitted. "She just needs a friend."
"But you aren't. You're her boss."
"C'mon now," he tried. "Get some sleep. You'll feel better in the morning…" Kate sighed. It was useless to try and convince Jack he needed to get rid of Robin. He chalked it up to her pregnancy hormones but she knew better. She knew there was something about Robin. "I'll tell you what," Jack started, "tomorrow we'll have an at home date. Just you and I—"
"And Aaron."
"He can go to Grandma's for a night."
"Just us? You promise?"
"I promise." Jack used two fingers to lift her chin and kiss her gently. He knew from the hospital how pregnant women could be and he secretly hoped Kate would calm down. Robin was nice to patients, a hard worker and she seemed like she was genuinely interested in Jack's work and home life. He had even thought she'd be a good friend for Kate.
The next evening, Kate made sure to light candles and dim the lights before Jack came home. With Aaron they didn't have many evenings alone and she wanted to take full advantage.
"You look beautiful," Jack whispered as he walked in the door. Kate wore dark green lingerie that made her eyes pop, even in the dimly lit room.
Instead of words, Kate lead him by the hand to the bedroom. She placed a hand over the back of her head to kiss him deeply. She backed onto the bed, her eyes locked with his. Without warning, she grabbed onto his head and pulled him towards her center, eager for his mouth. Jack grinned seductively before taking her roughly. His tongue flicked at her ball of nerves until she was clenching the sheets in ecstasy. A moan caught in her throat when she heard his phone ring. "Don't get that," she panted. "I'm so close…"
"It could be work," Jack said, pulling back. "It's Robin," he said when he grabbed his phone and showed her the screen.
"Oh, wow," Kate said dryly, rolling her eyes. She didn't know if she felt more angry or sad that he'd answered the phone.
"… no stay where you are… I'm not letting you do that…I'm on my way…" Jack sighed as he hung up, knowing Kate wouldn't be happy. As expected, she slid out of bed before he could say a word. She wrapped a silk robe around herself and began to blow out the romantic candles.
"Kate…"
"You promised. And you're leaving me. For her. I'm starting to feel like the other woman."
"You know that's not true. She locked herself out of her car and a locksmith will take hours. And in this rain? I've got to, Kate."
"I'll see you later," she grumbled before heading to the living room and turning on the television.
She woke to an infomercial playing in the dark living room. A glance at the clock told her it was after 3am. But Jack was nowhere to be seen. She flicked a tear from the corner of her eye. She knew men often strayed while their wives were pregnant but not Jack. Not them.
At quarter to four, Jack walked through the door. "You're up," he said softly.
"Where were you?" She demanded.
"Robin and I got to talking in her apartment and she treated me to breakfast."
"So a date?"
"Kate, I'm sorry. I should have called—"
"You should have stayed home!" She yelled. Jack flinched at her raised voice. When she got mad her voice went low; he could only imagine how mad she had to be to raise her voice.
"Kate, I'm sorry."
"Sorry for what? What did you do tonight?" Her voice was low and quiet as she asked the second question.
"Do you think I'd ever cheat on you? Do you think I could even look at someone else?"
"If you'd asked me yesterday I would have said no." She offered a sad smile. "You can sleep on the couch."
With that, Kate walked away and locked the bedroom door behind her.
