Chapter 81: The Beginning of The End
Thor stood with his arms crossed, watching as Enid interrogated their nephew, who had somehow been able to camouflage himself into his surroundings to hitch a ride on the Quinjet; then, when they got back to Avengers Headquarters, after entering, Fenrir got off the jet, and turned into a mouse for some reason, and went running across the floor, when Barton saw him, he let out a squeal and jumped back, then him Romanoff and Sam chased him around the room while the others watched; he went under a chair; Barton got out his bow and aimed an arrow towards the chair, waiting for him to come out. When he did, he was no longer a mouse. Still, a snake, which was the first clue something wasn't right and had Stark putting on the Iron Man glove aiming it at the snake and demanding him to revile himself; that was when Enid had jumped in between their weapons and the snake, fearing for his wife Thor had jumped in front of Enid holding up his hands, then turned to her and asked why they were doing that her reply was to stop them from killing their nephew, and that's when it all came out, Fenrir reviled himself, the team sighed in relief at the intruder being a kid and not some big baddie and Enid had sat Fenrir down in a chair to find out why and how Fenrir came to be here. Thor still didn't know how Enid had figured it out; he guessed it was the changing from mouse to snake.
"Fen, you are going to be in so much trouble." Enid said, "Not only did you run away, but you risked your life various times. What if Clint had shot you. And what if Tony hadn't given you a chance to show yourself but shot you instead?"
"Then dad would kill them," Fenrir replied.
"Fen, we don't joke like that," Enid replied.
"I wasn't thinking, okay?" Fenrir snapped. Thor frowned; he really shouldn't be talking to Enid that way; even if he was upset, Thor couldn't imagine what must be going through his mind after hearing what Loki said; the poor kid must have been confused and hurt; Thor can see why Fenrir would be angry, but Loki was the one Thor was worrying about the most, how did he not realize Loki was still suffering so much? Yeah, he knew his brother still grieved for the loss of his wife, but he had no idea he was still having nightmares and hearing it at times; Thor assumed Loki had gotten better, which wasn't the case; he had just gotten better at hiding it, ignoring his pain. When this was over, Thor planned to talk to Enid and Frigga; Loki needed someone to talk to, he needed help, and Thor was going to make sure he got it.
"Why would you even do that?" Enid demanded.
"I want to see mom," Fenrir replied, and there it was; Fenrir had run off because he wanted to see his Mother; Thor's heart ached for him. He couldn't imagine losing his mother now as old as he was, so it must be hard for a child to grow up without one.
"Oh, Fen, honey, that's impossible," Enid replied, squatting down in front of Fenrir.
"Why?" Fenrir demanded, "You guys are going; why can't I?"
"It's too dangerous," Enid replied, "And what we are doing is very important; we haven't even figured out when or where to get the aether."
"I know what dad said about you not bothering past mom, but wouldn't it be easiest to get it when mom was in prison with grams?" Fenrir asked.
"Damn, why didn't we think of that?" Sam said.
"Hang on, your dad told you about your mom being in prison?" Stark asked.
"Dad doesn't keep anything from me when talking about him and mom's past," Fenrir said. "He tells me stories; my favorite is the battle of New York when he and mom nearly beat you guys and the X-MEN at the same time."
"Okay, I get not keeping things from your kids, but some things you shouldn't tell them, at least until they are older," Sam said.
"If you want to criticize how my dad raises me, you go tell him he's doing it wrong." Fenrir said, "I dare you."
"No, I'm good," Sam said.
"Do you even know what criticize means?" Stark asked.
"Yes, it's when a person voices the faults they see in the way others do things," Fenrir replied, Stark's eyebrows raised, "My dad doesn't give me small vocabulary words in my lessons."
"Is anyone else getting the vibe of talking to a mini adult?" Sam asked.
"Yeah, me," Barton replied. "But I sometimes got that vibe with my kids."
"I do with Cassie, too," Scott replied, "Kids are usually smarter than we give them credit for."
"Yeah, but he's too smart," Sam said.
"A child prodigy," Hank replied. They stopped their conversation when Enid shot them a look, then turned back to Fenrir.
"Fen, I think that would be an easier way to get the aether, but sweetie, you still can't go; we can't risk it, we can't risk you, and your dad would have a fit," Enid said.
"This isn't about dad," Fenrir argued, "He got to have years with Mom; I'm just asking for one minute, only one; I won't even talk to her; I'll sneak up to her and get the aether out of her and sneak out, but I'll at least get to see her."
"I say we let him," Thor spoke up. Enid turned and looked at him.
"Have you lost your mind?" Enid demanded. "It's too dangerous, and Loki will kill us. I know you're probably used to it, but I, for one, do not want to be stabbed by your brother."
"I'll be the one that goes with him," Thor said. "I'll keep him safe, but look at him; he needs this."
"I agree with Thor," Bucky said, "Fen can handle himself, and Thor will be with him; we have an extra GPS thing since Hank wants to stay behind and watch the controls."
The others broke at arguing about it; some were for letting him go, the others were against it, and Enid looked at Fenrir, at his pouty face and sad eyes, and thought about what Loki blurted out not even two hours ago and how Fenrir was probably picturing his mom as a zombie floating around in space, and maybe to see her not like that was what Fenrir needed right now.
"I changed my mind," Enid announced, causing everyone to stop talking and turn to her. "I say we let him."
"I'm sorry," Stark said, "I don't think I heard you right, Cinderella."
"I don't like this any more than you, but Thor's right; let the kid get a glimpse of his mom," Enid said. "Loki says anything; Thor and I will handle it."
"Fine, whatever, we don't have time to argue. We need to plan." Stark said, "But if anything happens, it's on you two."
After that, no one argued over anything else as they got down to planning and going over what to do in the end; they decided that Thor and Fenrir would go to the mutant prison to get the aether from Saphira, and Bucky and Sam would go to Morag to get the Power Stone, Romanoff and Barton would go to Vomir for the Soul Stone and Stark, Scott and Enid would go to New York, 2012 for the Mind Stone and Space Stone. They all gathered around the machine and wished each other luck, then pressed their watches and were gone.
"That place looks like something out of a horror movie," Fenrir said when they appeared in front of the prison.
"Loki lets you watch horror movies?" Thor asked.
"Of course, they're the best movies," Fenrir answered.
"I believe I need to chat with Loki," Thor said, "He lets you do whatever you want; it's not good for you."
"Says the one who let me travel to the past," Fenrir replied. "Besides, I have rules; Dad has ground me a lot lately and kept taking my controller."
"How are we going to get in there without being seen?" Thor demanded; Fenrir smiled, reached into the inside of his jacket pocket, and pulled out Loki's jacket.
"Dad never uses it, so I borrowed it a while back; he never noticed it missing, and before I discovered my camouflage ability a couple of days ago, I was using it to play pranks on people who mess with us, the snotty old lady next door, who complained to the city about my wolves now thinks her house is haunted."
"Fenrir, that's not nice," Thor replied, frowning.
"Hey, she deserved it. I almost lost Hati and Skoll because of her." Fenrir replied, "And she cost Dad a big amount of money to make the matter go away."
"We'll talk about that later." Thor replied, "We need a plan now."
"Easy, you have Dad's jacket. Turn yourself invisible, and I'll camouflage myself. We walk on it, then once we know where my mom is, we'll walk up to her cell, and you stand guard outside while I go in and get the aether out of her; if we are lucky, mom will be having a nap; grams said she slept some days because of the headaches the collar gave her. Once I have it, we'll come out here and return to our time."
"How are you going to know what cell she's in?" Thor asked.
"We'll have to stop in the office and look in the files," Fenrir answered.
"Do you have that thing to put it in?" Thor asked.
"Yep," Fenrir replied, holding it up.
"Good," Thor replied, taking the jacket and slipping it on; it turned from green to gold to red; he looked at it frowning.
"The jacket does that a lot; Dad has all kinds of spells on it," Fenrir replied.
"Loki doesn't know about the camouflage thing, does he?" Thor asked.
"No," Fenrir said, "I only discovered I could do it a few days ago and haven't told him yet because I'm not supposed to try new magical things without him there to make sure I don't hurt myself." Fenrir rolled his eyes.
"That's a good rule, Fen; you should listen to it," Thor said.
"I was bored," Fenrir replied, "There is something I recently discovered that Dad does know; the reason I can see better than most in the dark is my eyes have the same special layer over them that wolves do, so my eyes similar to wolves in more than just color. I also have enhanced hearing and smell and many other senses wolves have."
"Interesting." Thor said, "Okay, we have a plan; let's go get the aether; if we get separated, we meet each other out here, and you be careful, get into any trouble, scream or shout my name."
Fenrir agreed, then camouflaged himself; then took hold of Thor's hand, and he used the jacket to turn invisible, they headed into the prison; it wasn't hard to get in due to it being during the day, and the inmates were allowed to go in and out of jail; the doors were open at the side that leads into a courtyard, few mutants were sitting around or walking, and they passed two men at a picnic table arm wrestling with a few guys standing around them cheering, they also saw a woman kicking at a cat; Thor had to stop Fenrir from sending a blast of magic at her, besides avoiding being bumped into by someone there wasn't anything they had to do to get into the prison; a guard sat just inside behind a desk, not doing an excellent job of keeping his eyes on those outside, that's something Thor noticed the security was lacking in this place; he could hear two people yelling at each other down the corridor to his left, it was so loud and such angry shouts that a fight was going to break out any minute, but yet the guards made no move to go break it up as if they couldn't care less if the inmates killed each other.
"Uncle Thor," Fenrir whispered; he stopped and pulled on his arm, "It's mom."
Thor paused and looked, and sure enough, Saphira was standing in a room talking to a woman in a nurse uniform; she was asking for something for a headache, and the nurse gave her some aspirin; and Saphira took it with water, thanked her, then left the room; Thor had to pull Fenrir back to avoid Saphira bumping into him, as she walked by.
"Mom was so pretty," Fenrir replied, watching her walking away from them. Thor felt for him. "Come on," Fenrir pulled on his arm, "She's not going outside, so she must be going back to her cell."
Thor agreed, and the two hurried to catch up to Saphira as they followed her down a corridor and up a staircase; where Thor and Fenrir had to move out of the way as three women went hurrying past them, and they watched as one-hit Saphira from behind, and two more who were standing on top waiting for her step forward and they all surrounded her.
"Some goddess," The one who hit her laughed.
"You bitch." Fenrir growled out and let go of Thor's hand to tackle her; fortunately, Thor could tell where he was enough to grab him and hold Fenrir back as he covered his mouth so no one would hear him yelling.
"Your mom can take care of herself," Thor said, "Watch." Thor uncovered his mouth but kept a hold on him, and they watched as Saphira caught her arm, stopping her attacker's second hit, then pulled her leg out from under her, causing her to fall hard on the metal walkway, then fought off the other four women.
"My mom's a badass," Fenrir said in amazement.
"That she was. " Thor agreed; he and Saphira might have had a relationship that went from being friends to being, well, not enemies, but they fought a lot, and Thor missed those fights; it might be a weird thing to miss, but Saphira was always fun to argue with.
"They are beating her up." Fenrir said, "Please, we have to help her, Uncle Thor." It was true; one of the inmates got Saphira with a kick knocking her down, and they all started hitting and punching Saphira at once. Before Thor could think of something to do to help his sister-in-law, someone else stepped in.
"That's enough!" An angry voice yelled; the women stopped their assault on Saphira and moved back to revile Mystique standing there. Thor watched in amazement as the women held their hands and backed away. "Saphira is not only my cellmate but a friend; you mess with her, you answer to me. I have already told every one of you this once. I will not say it a third time; she is now under my protection; you know what that means, so get lost before I lose my temper."
Thor and Fenrir had to lean far on the railings as the woman ran past. When the woman who had knocked Saphira down from behind went by, Fenrir stuck out his foot and tripped her; she fell down the stairs knocking the other woman down; they weren't hurt but stood up arguing with one another about who tripped who, Thor and Fenrir turned from them, and followed Mystique and Saphira to their cell, they leaned against the sides of the doorway, watching as Saphira sat down on her bed.
"If it wasn't for this collar, I could have taken them all out," Saphira said, "Plus, they got me from behind."
"Am I going to have to a company you everywhere?" Mystique demanded. Then before Saphira could reply, she walked out of the room and down the stairs; Fenrir looked at Thor.
"Go do something to distract her." Fenrir demanded, "Give me ten to twenty minutes, then meet me outside; I'm not out there by then; come find me." Thor nodded and, wondering why he was letting a nine-year-old be in charge; he hurried after Mystique, and Fenrir used the enhanced hearing to listen to Thor and Mystique's footsteps, and once they got far away before turned and watched Saphira for a moment; she was sitting on the edge of her bed, covering her eyes, and trying not to cry; Fenrir snuck quietly into her room, and up to her, Fenrir slowly reached out with the syringe looking thing and slowly gently stuck it into Saphira's side; she jumped a bit and smacked her side above where Fenrir was now taking out the Reality Stone; she didn't look, so Fenrir didn't have to worry about if she could see what he was doing even if couldn't see him. Still confused about the sting she felt, Saphira looked in her bed.
"This freaking place better not have bedbugs," Saphira mumbled to herself; then, as Fenrir got the aether out of her, she swirled a little, then grabbed her head, suddenly feeling weak and dizzy.
Fenrir took a deep nervous breath, and now, to get to the real reason he came, he walked in front of Saphira and reviled himself to her; Saphira looked at him in shock for a moment and opened her mouth, but Fenrir held up his hands.
"Please, don't shout; we don't have much time, and I can explain why I'm here," Fenrir replied; Saphira closed her mouth and frowned.
"Are you a child of one of the inmates?" Saphira asked.
"Something like that," Fenrir said.
"You look familiar." Saphira replied, "And this isn't visiting day, and visitors aren't allowed in the cells; how did you get in here?"
"I probably look familiar because I look like my dad, especially when he was little, at least my grandmother always says that," Fenrir explained.
"Do I know him?" Saphira asked, "What's his name."
"Loki," Fenrir replied; Saphira's eyes narrowed.
"That's not funny; I swear I will kill whoever put you up to this," Saphira warned.
"I'm not lying; I'm from the future," Fenrir said, "Look, see this on my wrist; Tony Stark made it, Thanos won, and we are trying to undo it; I don't have much time, Loki is my father, you're my mother, that's where my curls came from, I have poof, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a jeweled dagger, and Saphira's eyes widened when she recognized it.
"Where did you?"
"Dad gave it to me," Fenrir said, "Said it was a gift to you on your wedding day; it used to belong to grandmother and told me how you refused to use it because you didn't want to ruin it, said you still insisted on using his dagger in fights."
"You're telling the truth." Saphira said, smiling, "You are mine and Loki's..." her smile dropped as she suddenly realized something. "I'm dead the year you come from, aren't I?"
"Thanos murdered you on my third birthday," Fenrir answered; Saphira gasped, tears falling down her face as Fenrir hurried and explained everything he knew about that day.
"Oh, sweetie, I'm sorry I wasn't there," Saphira said, reaching out and pushing back his hair, "You looked a lot like Loki when he was a child; I love your curls; blue is one of my favorite colors."
"I know; that's why it's one of mine too," Fenrir replied, "Blue, grey, and black are my colors."
"How is Loki?" Saphira asked, "Is future Loki with you? Someone has to be; they aren't going to let you come here by yourself."
"Uncle Thor is with me," Fenrir replied.
"Loki took me dying hard, didn't he?" Saphira asked.
"It's been six years, and he still cries himself to sleep at night," Fenrir answered, "He doesn't know I can hear him from my room, but you see, we have a chance to fix this; come with me to the future, we can all be a family again."
"If I do that, you won't be born." Saphira said, "What if you disappear once we get there."
"No, that won't happen; Mr. McCoy said changing this past won't change the future; you'll just leave your timeline for ours," Fenrir explained.
"What's your name," Saphira asked.
"Fenrir Remy Darkholme-Lokison," Fenrir answered. "I was born September 12, 2014."
"So I die September 12, 2017?" Saphira asked; Fenrir nodded, "Hang on did you say Darkhomle?"
"I'll explain when we get there, but right now, we don't have time," Fenrir replied, "We have to go before grams comes back."
"Wait, Fenrir, "Saphira said as he tried to pull her to her feet, "I can't go with you."
"What?" Fenrir demanded, "But.."
"I know what this, Mr. McCoy guy told you, but I can't take the chance he's wrong; I'm sorry," Saphira said, "Plus, I can't leave Loki behind; he'll be here any day to get me if he shows up and is not here, Loki will destroy this whole planet looking for me, and I can't even imagine how Loki will react when he never finds me."
"But.."
"I'm sorry, Fenny, but I can't," Saphira said. Fenrir went from hurt to angry as he crossed his arm and glared.
"You're being selfish," Fenrir said, "You have a chance to make Dad happy again; to be my mother, and you won't take it because you don't want to leave your stupid timeline."
"Fenrir, that's not true," Saphira said; she stood to walk toward him but fell back down on and grabbed her head.
"Mom?" Fenrir asked, walking back to her, his anger falling away into worry,
"I'm fine," Saphira said, "just a little weak, and my headache is worse." Saphira reached out and took his hands in hers, "Fen Fen, " Fenrir smiled a little at the nickname; he knew about it, his dad told him, but he, unfortunately, didn't remember Saphira saying it. "I've been thinking about what you said about how I die, and there has to be more to it than that; I am not saying I don't believe, and I'm not sure if I do, but I can't see myself allowing Thanos to kill me and in front of Loki, leaving him tied up and unable to help, I can't see myself doing that unless I have a good reason, and I can't see myself allowing my death without having some grand plan, some way of coming back."
"How you're dead? There is no coming back from that?" Fenrir demanded.
"I'm a goddess of nature; life and death are part of nature," Saphira said.
"It's been six years." Fenrir snapped, "You haven't come back yet." Saphira laid her hand on his cheek.
"I don't know what's keeping me, but Fenny, sweetheart, I swear to you, if it's meant for me to be your mom, for us to be together, then fate will find a way to make it so," Saphira said, Fenrir sniffed.
"Please," Fenrir begged, tears falling down his face. "I want Dad to be happy."
"Oh, Fenny, please don't cry." Saphira pulled him to her in a hug, and Fenrir wrapped his arms around her. After a moment, they pulled apart. "Your father might grieve for me, but don't you ever think you don't make him happy; you do; I know you do; Loki has always wanted children; I can only imagine how excited he was when we found out I was pregnant, that happiness didn't die with me."
Before Fenrir could answer, they heard someone heading to Saphira's cell; knowing it was Mystique coming back, Fenrir camouflaged himself and stepped away from Saphira as Mystique entered the room, carrying an ice pack; Saphira wasn't paying attention to her; she was looking for where Fenrir went, he turned and stepped out of the room.
"Where have you been?" Saphira asked, still not looking at her.
"Some idiot grabbed me from behind, tossed me into a cleaning closet, then locked the door, didn't see who, and everyone swears I throw myself in the closet, that there was no one there." Mystique said as she laid the ice pack on Saphira's eye, she jumped back from it.
"Don't be a baby." Mystique snapped.
"That's cold." Saphira snapped.
"Your husband is half frost giant; you should be used to cold." Mystique replied.
"That's different," Saphira replied.
"Are you crying?" Mystique asked.
"I broke my future son's heart; of course, I'm crying," Saphira said.
"What, son?" Mystique demanded. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Fenrir, he disappeared right when you came in here," Saphira replied, "Said he was born in 2014, and I dead in 2017 when Fenrir was three, making him nine now, tried to get me to go back to the future with him, I said no, and my son got upset, and now I can't see if he's okay because you showed up and scared him off."
"I think you should lay down." Mystique replied, "I'll go get the nurse; you obviously got hit harder than we thought."
"I know what I saw and heard." Saphira snapped, her voice rising.
"Am I the only one in this damn place who's not losing their freaking mind?" Mystique demanded.
Fenrir wiped his eyes and started hurrying away from the door and ran across the prison and outside to meet Thor, who was already outside waiting; Fenrir found him sitting near the ocean out of view of the prison with Loki's jacket off so Fenrir could see him, he stood when he heard Fenrir approaching, as Fenrir reviled himself.
"Did you get it?" Thor asked; Fenrir nodded as he wiped his eyes again, trying not to cry in front of his Uncle, who Fenrir looked up to a lot, even if he was mad at him earlier for bulling his uncle Remy, "Fen, are you alright? "
Fenrir nodded again, rubbing his eye, trying not to cry, but it didn't work, and now Thor was looking him over for injuries.
"Did you get hurt? Scared? What is it?" Thor demanded.
"She wouldn't come with me," Fenrir said; Thor paused and looked at him.
"Who? Oh," Thor replied, catching on quickly, "Is that the real reason you wanted to come?" Fenrir nodded, and Thor looked back towards the prison, then turned back to Fenrir.
"I thought I wanted to bring her with us just to make Dad happy, but I guess I wanted to for me as much as I wanted for him because her saying no hurts so much," Fenrir replied. Thor lifted Fenrir and held him to him; Fenrir wrapped his arms around Thor's neck and buried his face into his shoulders.
"Shh, Fen, it'll be okay," Thor said, trying to comfort him.
"I want my Dad." Fenrir cried.
"Okay, Fen, we'll head back to our time, and I'll call your dad to come get you," Thor replied, reached down and grabbed Loki's jacket, threw it on his shoulder; then pressed the button on his GPS watch and headed back to the year 2023.
AN: I figured Saphira would refuse to go with him because of leaving the Loki in her time, and sorry if it seemed to believe him too quickly, I had to move the chapter along, but she always believed in time travel.
