Chapter 84: Love and Family.
Saphira and Enid climbed to their feet. As she watched her family walking away from her, she suddenly had the energy to go after them; Saphira needed to explain to them; that she couldn't lose her entire family, especially Loki and Fenrir.
"I know that look, sister," Enid said, "Go after them."
Saphira lit up as she took to the air, flew over their heads, and landed in front of Loki, who had caught up to Fenrir, and was knelt in front of him, talking to him and comforting him. He glared at Saphira as he stood and faced her but didn't say anything; the rest of the family came to a stop next to him and stood staring at her; they, too, didn't say anything.
"Do not look at me like that," Saphira demanded, which only caused Loki's eyes to narrow more. "I know you have a right to be mad, but not for what you think."
"Oh?" Loki asked, "Then please tell me why you think I do not have a right to be mad that you allowed yourself to get killed, that you willingly left behind your husband and son so that you can be some all-powerful being and get your revenge."
"That's not why I did it," Saphira said as Thor and Enid caught up to them.
"What did you expect? To come back to open arms, to be forgiven immediately, to become the hero?" Loki demanded, "Do you know how much you hurt me? Do you know how hard it was to raise our son alone? For Fenrir to have no mother, to see every other child he comes across have mothers."
"Listen to me," Saphira tried.
"I could not believe my eyes when I saw you, alive and well." Loki continued, not giving Saphira a chance to talk. "I felt happy if not confused and a little angry; I knew we all realized you somehow knew Thanos was going to kill you before he did; we could never figure out why, but to hear it was for revenge and that you thought it was all worth it, to leave me to leave Fenrir."
"That's not what I meant!" Saphira yelled, and there was a gust of the wind, "It came out wrong; I didn't mean it that way; let me explain."
"Do not yell at me," Loki shouted back, "You do not have the right; you are the one that left me, left our son, left our family, and for what? Revenge?"
"I did it to save you!" Saphira yelled, tears falling from her face; the wind blew again, and light glowed around her; and Loki stood there, staring in shock, as everyone else watched between the two, respectfully staying out of it.
"I beg your pardon?" Loki demanded.
"You have known me all our lives, that's over a thousand years; I can't believe you would honestly think I would be that petty, that selfish to die for six years, to leave you heartbroken and to miss Fenny's early years just for revenge or power, and to be a hero? Loki, you know me better than that. "Saphira answered, "You know I love you two so much I would never want to leave for stupid reasons; I didn't want to, oh God, I didn't want to, but I had to, I had no choice, and yes, my reason was worth it, and if I had to do it all again I would."
"You said it was to save me?" Loki asked, no longer yelling. "Explain, please."
"You remember the day our son was born?" Saphira asked.
"Of course, I do, the best day of my life," Loki replied; Fenrir smiled at him, and Saphira nodded; it was hers too.
"Then you remember me sleeping in the next day when I woke; you had left the room with Fenny," Saphira said.
"You had been in labor for two and half days; I wanted to allow you rest," Loki replied, "I do not know what that has to do with what you are supposed to be explaining."
"That next day, I got a visit from The Pheonix force, or more liked she kidnapped me, since she took me out of my body to that stupid place outside the universe," Saphira said, "She then took my soul for a trip through the infinity stones, I had to stand there and watch as Thanos tortured my sister and killed you."
"What?" Loki demanded.
"In the original version of events, Thanos killed you, not me; Kurt had teleported me off the ship, leaving only you, Thor, and Enid to fight; after killing you, sending Thor off somewhere using the space stone, it left Enid alone with Thanos and his goons, they tortured her badly, then brought her to me, where I gave up the stones to get them to leave her alone, I couldn't allow either of those things to happen, so, I made a deal with the Phoenix. I took your place so that you could live; I died for you. I would gladly do it again, same with tricking Kurty to take Enid and get her out of harm's way," Saphira replied, "I did not know I would come back, not at first it wasn't until later I found that little tide bit out until it got closer and The Pheonix started speaking her plans in my mind; I was willing to die for you, I thought Fenny would be okay with you, he seemed closer to you than me most of the time."
Saphira glanced at Enid as she wiped her eyes, then at Fenrir, who had an unreadable expression, "I love you both so much I would never leave you two without a good reason, please, believe me, I betrayed my sister even."
"What do you mean you betrayed your sister?" Thor demanded, sounding angry.
"Shut up, Thor," Loki demanded, primarily out of habit, partly because no matter how much he was angry at her, there was no way Loki was going to allow his brother to yell at his wife.
"The Pheonix Force doesn't do favors without getting something in return, " Saphira said, speaking to Thor. "She wanted something and promised she would help arrange for me to take Loki's place if I helped her take over Enid's body."
"You did what?" Thor demanded; he took a step towards her, but Enid grabbed his arm and pulled him back.
"I am still me, just more powerful," Enid explained as Loki and Saphira stared at one another, "I accepted the help get rid of Thanos once and for all; Pheonix and I are the same now; the Phoenix force now resides inside me, permanently ."
"They are the same being; she'll still speak with Enid, might even take over sometimes, but they are one now." Saphira explained, "Pheonix chose Enid because she knew her mind could handle it."
Saphira finally looked away when Loki made no move toward her or spoke; Saphira then looked at each one of her family members. When none of them said anything or moved towards her, Saphira glowed blue, then disappeared.
Fenrir turned towards Loki. "We have to go after her, dad; you heard her; she had a good reason; we can have mom back; I was mad before, but I don't want to lose her."
"Neither do I," Loki replied, feeling terrible about how badly he had treated Saphira and not letting her explain. He had been so shocked and confused; Loki has wanted her back all this time, and he gets his wish, and he chases her off; what is wrong with him?
Not knowing where else to go, Saphira appeared in her and Loki's old house in Las Vegas and saw that Mystique and Frigga had been living there, so she disappeared again and reappeared in her old room in Enid's casino; it had been untouched, telling her Enid had left the apartment like it was and didn't use it, Saphira laid down on her bed, and stared at the ceiling, she told Loki the truth about what happened, and what she had to do, to save him, Enid saw the truth in the Pheonix's mind when they joined together and forgave Saphira at once, she understood, the coffin Enid saw in her dreams was real, Saphira's body was in it, the lights she saw when opening it was the infinity stones, Saphira had to wait for her body to get used to them, that's why it took so long to come back, the snap had to happen first, and when six years had passed the Pheonix scared a rat to run across the button that let Scott Lang out of the quantum tunnel so that he could come up with the time treavl idea, it was all preplanned by the Pheonix Force, a part of her job, now Enid's too to protect the universe. And Saphira honestly didn't know until much later that she'd be coming back; she liked that part even if Saphira missed years from her family's life; Saphira didn't like the thought of having all six infinity stones inside her; she didn't think she could take it, but while her soul slept for six years outside her body, her body itself, though genuinely dead, powered up. Now Saphira likes it, especially using the space stone to teleport; Saphira had to get used to it, though. She hopes it didn't cost her Loki and Fenrir.
Saphira must have fallen asleep because the next thing she knew, she was waking to the sound of music playing. Confused, Saphira sat up and listened, and to her surprise, it was coming from downstairs; someone had turned the radio on and was blasting rock music; Saphira got up, left her room, and walked down the stairs to find no one there, frowning. Saphira turned the radio off and flopped down on the couch, and put her face in her hands. Only for the radio to turn itself back on, this time not playing a rock song but the music she and Loki danced to on Asgard the night before Loki fell from the Bifrost. Saphira raised her head and jumped a little because Loki was suddenly standing above her; he grinned and held his hand out.
"May I have this dance," Loki asked; Saphira grinned and took his hand, and Loki pulled her to her feet, and they began to slow dance; for a moment, neither one spoke, just enjoined, holding each other. Then Loki asked. "Did you...where you?"
"Truly dead?" Saphira finished, "Yes, The Phoenix kept my body safe until I was ready to return to it." Loki dropped her hands and pulled her to him in a tight hug.
"I have been so miserable without you, darling," Loki said, "Fenrir is the only reason I kept going."
"I'm so sorry I put you through all that," Saphira said, "I didn't have a choice; I couldn't allow you to die; I just couldn't."
"I know, my love; I would have done the same," Loki replied. He pulled away a little and laid his forehead on hers, and closed his eyes. "Why is it so damn hard to be mad at you?"
"Because I am that great of a person," Saphira replied; Loki laughed and kissed her before pulling away; he waved his hand, and their song started playing again, and Loki pulled Saphira back to him, and they started dancing again.
"It feels unbelievable to have you in my arms again," Loki said; Saphira smiled.
"Does this mean you forgive me?" Saphira asked.
"Of course, I do, my love," Loki replied, then kissed her cheek. "That is if they were anything to forgive."
"May I cut in?" A small voice asked; Saphira turned and saw Fenrir sitting where she was before, two giant wolves, and Rosey was sitting on the floor next to him.
"Fen Fen?" Saphira asked; he suddenly jumped up and ran to her and threw his arms around her in a hug; Saphira hugged him back just as tight. "I have missed six years of your life Fen, but I promise I will be here for the rest of it."
"I'm glad you're back, mom," Fenrir said.
"And I'm glad to be back," Saphira said. She looked at Loki, and they smiled at each other, "Come on, Fen Fen, dance with us. "
Fenrir took one of Saphira's hands, then one of Loki's; and Saphira and Loki he held hands, then the three of them danced around, with Saphira and Loki taking turns twirling Fenrir around, and when he protested while laughing, Loki dipped him. Rosey seemed to get jealous as she came crawling over and grabbed their hands and joined in.
"Are the infinity stones truly inside you?" Loki asked; the song had stopped, and they paused in their dancing.
"Yep," Saphira answered, holding her arm out and making all the colors glow, "I am a walking talking infinity stone, or six."
"I can feel their power," Loki replied, amazed; he ran a finger down her arm, making the color lights jump around. Saphira giggled.
"That tickles," Saphira replied; Loki looked at her; she recognized that look in his eyes and that small, barely-there smile; her being so powerful was, well, let's say Loki was liking it, and leave it at that.
"You could have told me of your plan," Loki said, letting go of her arm.
"Would you have allowed me to do it?" Saphira demanded.
"No, he wouldn't," Fenrir answered.
"Hush, you," Loki told him; Fenrir grinned.
"He's right," Saphira said, "You would have been willing to die for me as I did for you."
"Of course, I would have," Loki replied, "You're my life, you and Fenrir; you two mean everything to me."
"You two mean everything to me, too," Saphira answered, putting her am around Loki's waist and pulling him to her; Loki leaned in to kiss her.
"Oh my God, you two are so cheesy," Fenrir said, "Gross."
"Gross, eh?" Loki demanded; he lifted Fenrir, and he and Saphira leaned in to kiss each side of his face, then started tickling him. They looked at each other, smiling, then leaned toward each other for another kiss.
"Stop, it," Fenrir giggled, "You're being too mushy. I'm a kid; I don't need to witness such things."
At that moment, the door opened, and in came Thor, leading Kurt, Mantis, Mystique, Remy, Rogue, Frigga, and Enid with Meadow."
"Sister, I would like you to meet someone," Enid said; Saphira looked at Meadow and squealed.
"I'm an aunt!" Saphira cried, rushing forward to pick Meadow up, "Sister, she's so adorable."
"I know, I am." Meadow replied, "I'm also a princess." Saphira laughed.
"You inherited your uncle's conceitedness," Saphira said,
"Hey, " Loki said; Saphira looked at him with a smile; he grinned back, happiness shining in his eyes.
"Let's hope you inherited your Mother's brain," Saphira said.
"Hey," Thor snapped, and she laughed, then sat Meadow down; one by one, everyone came up to hug her and welcome her back, even Mystique, and when Rogue did, Saphira welcomed her back too, and they decided to order food and sit around catching up; Saphira congratulated Mystique and Frigga on their marriage as she sat on the couch with Fenrir seated on one side of her, Loki on the other he was holding her hand. Fenrir had his arms wrapped around her arm like both made sure she didn't disappear on them again. The family stayed up all night and way past morning, filling Saphira in on everything she had missed; they talked, joked, and Remy told her he had Mischief at the LeBeau Mansion, having taken care of him since Saphira's death, he promised she could have him back and told her his fur was turning grey, and he had gotten lazier and less aggressive in his old age; she loved Fenrir's two wolves; she had been a little surprised Bucky had bought them for him, Fenrir thanked her, and told her they were his two best friends. And when she saw Tempest, Saphira couldn't believe how huge she was and told Thor she'd create a mate so she wouldn't be the only one of her kind.
"I love your jeans, Loke Loke." Saphira teased as she stuck her finger in the hole in his knee, tickling it.
"Stop," Loki ordered, moving his leg away.
"The fact you used to give Saphira crap for wearing holes in her jeans, and now you do is hilarious to me." Tho said.
"I hope you cut them yourself and not paid for clothes with holes." Saphira joked.
"Keep teasing me, and I won't give you a surprise," Loki said.
"You have a gift for me?" Saphira demanded.
"Sort of," Loki replied; he held out his hand, and a jar with two big roots appeared. He handed it to Saphira and frowned, confused, "I was going to give that to you after we fled Asgard, but well, you know why I didn't get the chance. "
"What are they too?" Saphira asked.
"I snuck them from the world tree before we left Asgard; I remembered what you said, about as long as there still was a root, it should grow; after I lost you, I put it away and never thought about it," Loki replied.
"You want me to grow back, Asgard?" Saphira asked, "There are two here."
"My plan was not only to grow back Asgard but to use the second to grow a tenth realm, a home we could truly belong to," Loki replied.
"Our realm?" Saphira asked, "Loki, it's a brilliant idea." They leaned toward each other and kissed, "I love you so damn much."
"And I love you so damn much too," Loki replied.
"You two are being cheesy again," Fenrir replied; they laughed, and Saphira pulled Fenrir between him and Loki, and they hugged him.
"We love you too, Fen, Fen," Saphira replied; the three of them snuggled there together and at some point grew so tired they fell asleep, with Fenrir lying across both their laps, and Loki and Saphira snuggled to each other; Enid covered them with a blanket, being careful not to cover Fenrir's face while Thor decided to take a picture, the others quietly left to find rooms available so they could get some sleep, and Enid and Thor went up to their old bedroom; it was evening now, and none of them had gotten any sleep yet, the small family left on the couch snuggled closer.
A few hours later, when Loki woke, the first thing he did was glance next to him to make sure Saphira was still there; she was, and he immediately felt relief as he ran his hand through her hair and watched her sleep for a moment, or at least he thought she was asleep.
"That's kind of creepy, you know?" Saphira said before opening her eyes and looking at him; Loki smirked.
"I know; you told me before," Loki replied; he rubbed her cheek, "Would you like to take our son home, darling?"
"Home?" Saphira asked.
"To the house, Fenrir and I have been living in," Loki answered; Saphira agreed and carefully stood and helped Loki raise Fenrir off him without waking him up; Loki stood, then carefully picked Fenrir up, and Saphira grabbed his arm, and he teleported them to their house in Alaska; Saphira started looking around the moment they appeared before following Loki to Fenrir's room so that he could lay him in his bed, Loki magically changed Fenrir's clothes to pajamas and put his plush of Saphira in his arms, she almost cried finding out he slept with it. After Loki kissed his forehead and stepped away, Saphira leaned in and did the same before following Loki out of the room. Into the living room, Loki turned to go into the kitchen, and Saphira noticed the rose Loki had given her sitting on the mantle and walked over to it.
Loki had gotten a bottle of champagne and two glasses from the kitchen and walked back into the living room and stood there watching Saphira trace the rose in the ice with her finger; he smiled; it all still felt like a dream to him, like any minute now Saphira, his beautiful wife would disappear on him, a part of him knew she wouldn't, that this wasn't all a dream, but it seems so unreal.
"I remember that day clearly," Loki said, walking towards her.
"Yeah, our first fight," Saphira replied.
"Thirsty, darling?" Loki asked, holding a glass of champagne toward her Saphira smiled and took it.
"Thank you," Saphira said, taking a drink.
"Poor Fenrir must be so exhausted," Loki replied, pouring himself a glass. "We'll have to go out and do something as a family whenever he wakes up."
"Yes, we totally should," Saphira said, "I'm looking forward to becoming a family again; I know it'll take time and work, but I'm going to cherish every minute with you two."
"Same here, love," Loki replied; he filled her glass back up, then lifted his towards her, "Here is to a future together and family."
Saphira clicked her glass to his, and they both began to drink; Loki sat the glass and bottle on the mantel, then turned to Saphira and pulled her to him and kissed her; Saphira sat her glass down and put her arms around him and deepened the kiss when they pulled apart Loki kissed her forehead then looked down at her, still smiling.
"I have wished to have you back; I never dreamed it would come true," Loki said; he leaned his head to kiss her cheek, then whispered in her ear. "I'll give you a tour of our house later; right now, how about I show you our room?"
"Okay," Saphira replied; Loki smiled again and scooped Saphira up in her arms, and they kissed as he carried her to their bedroom and used his foot to close the door. Maybe now they could finally have their happily ever after.
