Fort Lucus…
"Move it, you worthless worms!" Jet barked at the rookies maneuvering through the tree branches above. "Is that how fast you can run? I've seen cacti move faster than those spindly legs! I want to see twenty laps around this fort in ten minutes!"
The rookies groaned and wailed.
"What was that?!"
"Sir, yes sir!"
"That's what I thought!" Once the rookies continued on their way, Jet took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose. "The first month is always the hardest part…"
BOOM!
Jet nearly jumped out of his fur as an explosion went off from the adjacent platform. He jumped off the ledge and rocketed over the platform with Aqua Jet as the smoke cleared away. He saw Lucient and the Good Brothers backing out of the smoke and coughing.
"What happened?" Jet asked after he landed.
In the center of the platform, he saw Victoria sprawled out on the floor next to an equally charred Felix and Melissa. Melissa was the first to get up and dusted herself off before laughing.
"Not bad, but that wasn't nearly big enough to blow up a safe. Trust me, you'll want plenty more piled on if you want to bust through any unbreakable places."
Victoria sprung up and grinned. "Whatever you say, ma'am!"
Melissa pointed at Felix. "And you! That wasn't a bad counterattack, but you need to be aware of your surroundings better. Remember, I'm the guard, and Vicky's your partner. Protect the partner!"
Felix sat up and rubbed his neck. "Aye, ma'am."
Jet narrowed his eyes and approached Melissa as she helped Felix to his feet. "Well, this is a surprise. Done with your secret training, I see?"
Melissa grinned. "Hey there, spicy otter! What's shaking?"
He raised his brow. "Spicy…otter?"
Her eyes widened. She laughed awkwardly and scratched the back of her head. "Uh, I mean, Jet. Hey Jet. Yep, just doing some training with the apprentices." She hooked her arms around Victoria and Felix. "My pals! Amigos! My sprouts ready to bloom into mighty trees! That sort of shebang!"
"…" Jet narrowed his eyes deeper. "You seem cheery today."
"Bah! I was going through a phase, kind of like you are right now." She squinted at him. "Well, I guess yours is a little longer than a normal phase, but you'll grow out of it eventually."
"…" He folded his arms behind his back and walked around the Buneary. "Funny, I was under the impression you had issues with your apprentices."
Victoria and Felix frowned, but Melissa gave them a hard squeeze. "These adorable doofuses? Far from it! There were some rough edges to work out, but we found our common ground. They're the best apprentices I've ever had, I tell you. Only ones, but that's that."
"…" He stopped and stared her dead in the eye. "Is that a fact?" He glanced over at Lucient and the brothers, who looked away and innocently whistled. He glared at them before turning back to Melissa. "Well, I'm glad I found you, Melissa."
Her eyes widened. "Eh?" she asked with an awkward smile.
"I ran into Marie earlier and wanted to ask her something, but she seemed to be in a hurry. If you run into her, can you pass the message along?"
She laughed and waved it off. "Oh, sure, sure, no problem."
"Hmm, good." He turned and walked away. "Oh, and if you see Adenine, tell her I'll be passing by her hut later about uniforms. Some of the rookies need modifications to the sizes."
Melissa laughed. "Can do, buddy! Later!"
"Hmm." Jet rocketed off with Aqua Jet.
Once he was back on his platform, Melissa gasped for air and fell over on her back. "Thank goodness!" Star-shaped pupils formed in her eyes. "How can you people stand being in a single form?! It's suffocating!"
Lucient walked over and pulled her up. "You might be getting a little too comfortable playing Melissa. I noted eight major discrepancies in your performance, most of them being Melissa's dialect."
The faux Buneary, JoJo, waved his concern off. "It's fine. Jet's too uptight. He totally believed I was Melissa."
Avel glared. "I suppose one can blame it on Melissa's extreme mood swings."
Wyatt crossed his arms and frowned. "Still feels wrong that we're lying about where the girls are. I'm getting a knot in my stomach."
JoJo waved it off. "It's fine. Sadie's got my back, and she's great at this lying crap. She posed as a maid for years, and no one suspected her. Plus, she's got the best partner for gaslighting a fool."
Lucient narrowed his eyes. "I reserve the right to say I was bribed. I rather not be on the receiving end of his scalchop."
"Whatever."
Victoria tapped her hands together awkwardly. "Um, is what Jet said true? That Melissa doesn't like us?"
Felix frowned and looked away. "That's cold."
"Eh?" JoJo turned and waved it off. "Relax, relax, Melissa does like you guys. She just…needs some time off. She's been working so hard to help you, right?"
The apprentices glanced at each other unsurely. "Well—"
"Great!" JoJo turned and hopped away. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get Sadie and come up with some excuse for why I can't make uniforms."
Lucient and the brothers watched her hop off with deadpan expressions. "She's so going to blow her cover," Avel grumbled.
Lucient nodded. "Mhmm."
Senbo Capital…
Trumpets sounded from Castle Talbot, and the doors pulled open for the eagerly awaiting nobles standing in the front entrance. Knights stood by the entrance checking the invitations to make sure they were valid before letting the guests through. There was a buzz of excitement among the upper class, gossip spreading of what was to come from the evening.
Nearing the front of the line, the Forester girls chattered amongst themselves to pass the time by. Melissa wore a green dress with a wide skirt and sleeves, and wore a black mask over her face. Marie wore a strapless black, modified to also show off a bit of her legs, and a purple mask. Pandora walked in a white dress with a skirt that was lifted by her tail and a flowery hat that hung over her eyes. Lillia spun around in her fancy blue dress and mask, similar to Melissa's, and had her hair styled into curls. Adenine kept her head low, retreating into the ruffles of her yellow dress and gripping her feathery umbrella close to her chest.
Melissa gripped Adenine's shoulders. "Deep breaths, Addy. We are almost inside. Mere moments away from that perfect afternoon with Erasmus."
She gulped. "Ah feel a sweat comin' on…"
Marie snickered and licked her lips. "So many cuties around, and none the wiser to the devil hanging nearby. You sure I can't sneak off and get a private show? I spy some fine assets under all these fancy clothes."
Pandora rose on her hindlegs and slapped the perverted Mawile across the head. "Keep it in your skirt." She dropped down and groaned as she shifted in her dress. "So stupid. Why is my skirt so big? My tail's going to get sore keeping it up all day."
Lillia raised her brow. "Then…don't?"
"But if I do, someone's going to step on it. And it someone steps on it, it's going to tear off. And if that happens, I don't even want to think about THAT!"
"Already am~," Marie said with a snicker.
Adenine sighed. "Ah tried to make modifications, but Ah was shakin' too much last night. Couldn't keep a needle straighter than an arrow through a pipe."
Melissa smiled. "Pandora can handle it for one day. Cannot be any worse than Jet's training."
"I do not recall having to lift weights with my tail," the Growlithe grumbled.
Marie waved her off. "You can leave after the big presentation thing and wait for us in our room."
"No way! Someone needs to keep an eye on you."
Melissa giggled. "I will stay with her, Pan."
"Why do you think I need to keep an eye on her?"
Adenine clutched her umbrella tighter. "Oh heavens, what am Ah doin'? Ah should leave, this was a mistake!" She tried to turn and run, but Melissa grabbed her arms and pulled her back in.
"No, you are not running away. This is a big moment for you, and I will not condone this act of chickening out!" Melissa exclaimed.
"Hypocrite," Marie coughed.
"What was that?"
"I said we're here!" Marie gestured ahead as the Pokémon in front of them entered the castle.
Adenine whimpered, but Lillia gave her a reassuring pat on the back. "You'll be fine. Think happy thoughts. Happy thoughts."
"Happy thoughts," the Kecleon muttered.
Marie approached the knights and pulled the invitations out from the chest area of her dress. "Here you are, boys. Five invitations for five lovely ladies." She winked at them. "One of them, of course, being on the market for a good time if you are interest—OOF!" Pandora kicked her in the stomach and knocked her to the floor.
The knights seemingly ignored them and looked the invitations over. "The Talbot Seal." They deposited the invitations into a box near them and gestured into the castle. "You may enter."
Melissa laughed nervously as she helped Marie up. "Thank you kindly, gentlemen." She escorted the wounded Mawile through with the girls following behind.
The knights turned back to the awaiting nobles with a silence hovering between them.
"…She was totally checking me out."
"Pft, you wish."
The girls entered the castle foyer and looked upon in awe at the turnout. A grand gathering of nobles mingling about, raising glasses and laughing about whatever amusing topics piqued their interest. Along the walls were the buffet tables displaying remarkable appetizers to divulge oneself into, ranging from bread rolls, fruit kabobs, rows of sweets, and more. Servers roamed through the nobles offering drinks, most likely wine. Musicians were off in a corner, filling the atmosphere with an orchestral performance that gave the impression of stepping into a mystical realm. It was both enchanted and inviting to the ear.
The centerpiece of the foyer was the stage set up before the stairwell with curtains raised. It would no doubt serve as the mantle for unveiling Senbo's grand project to the prospecting nobles.
The girls, sans Melissa, scanned their new environment in awe, eyes sparkling at the wonderful sights never before experienced by common eyes. Melissa giggled between them. "Welcome to my walk of life, girls. This is real class at its finest."
"I'll say," Lillia said. "I haven't been to anything this fancy since the baptism of Algus' last prince. My stars, look at the portions being served."
Pandora licked her lips at the buffet table. "Suddenly invested to stay longer…"
Marie licked her lips as well. "Agreed."
"…You're not staring at the buffet table, are you?"
"Who says I'm not staring at a different kind of buffet?"
Pandora facepalmed. "Good grief…"
Adenine eased up from behind Melissa and looked around at the nobles. She stopped clutching her umbrella tightly and eased the tension in her shoulders. "This looks…nice."
Melissa patted her shoulders. "See? You are perfectly fine. It will just be you and the prince having an enchanting afternoon together. Look to the stars and see the world as it is: a rare opportunity for you to be with your one true love." She grabbed her cheeks and pressed their foreheads together. "This is the most important moment of your life, and you deserve to be happy."
"…Ya're really close."
Lillia looked through the crowd and squinted at something. A spiral-shaped tail bouncing along through the nobles, many of them bowing to it with great cheer. She smiled and tapped the girls. "Speak of the devil, but I believe I found the object of your affections over yonder."
Adenine's face turned bright red. "WHAT?!" She opened her umbrella and hid herself under it. "MEEP!"
Out from the crowds, the Glameow in question waved to the nobles greeting him, though seemed to have his attention elsewhere. His eyes flickered between the guests, searching them. His eyes soon fell upon the Forester girls, where he took considerable notice of the shaking umbrella between them. He blinked twice before smiling and walking over.
Melissa covered her face with her ears, making sure not to make eye contact, and pushed Adenine forward. The Kecleon stumbled, dropping her umbrella, and bumped into the object of her affection. She gasped and jumped away, covering her face.
"Ah'm sorry!"
Erasmus smiled. "My, what a charming accent, my dear. You remind me of someone I know."
"Ah, uh…"
He chuckled and took her hand in his paw. "I am jesting. How lovely to see you here, my beautiful rainbow." He kissed her hand. Adenine squeaked and hid her increasingly red face. "I am happy you decided to come. I must admit, a part of me assumed you would not."
She pulled herself out of hiding and smiled sheepishly. "Well, it took some convincin'. And Ah am glad Ah caved in. Um, is it alright if Ah hug ya?"
He nodded. "You did not have to ask." He pulled her in and hugged her close. She smiled and wrapped her arms around him.
"Awwww!" the girls gushed.
Erasmus pulled away from Adenine and smiled at the girls. "So, you must be Adenine's friends." He bowed to them. "I thank you for keeping our…relationship in silence. It means a lot."
Marie waved it off. "Yeah, yeah, whatever. Anything for our girl." She smiled and curtsied. "A pleasure to meet you, Your Highness. Thank you kindly for the extended invitation to us common folk. We are humbled."
Erasmus nodded. "I had spares for other socialites, but I say they were better used to give my Addy an excuse to come." Adenine covered her face shyly. "Please feel free to mingle about before the presentation starts. I do ask you remain in the foyer as the rest of the castle is off limits to guests."
Lillia curtsied. "Of course, sir."
Pandora shuffled up to Erasmus' side. "Ssssooo, out of curiosity, what's this super special project you all have been yapping about here?"
He smirked. "I am afraid you will have to be patient."
"Patience is for the weak!"
"A mighty temper you possess, my dear. So full of spirit." He shook his head. "But it will be a short time before the presentation starts, so try to rein in those emotions until we can begin."
Pandora pouted. "Fine…"
Erasmus finally turned his attention to Melissa, who tried to refrain from making eye contact with him. "How are you enjoying yourself so far, my dear?"
Melissa gulped and laughed awkwardly. "Oh, I…I'm fine." She tried to raise the pitch of her voice, sounding a lot squeakier than normal. "I'm not so used to attending such…exhilarating festivities. It's truly an honor."
"Hmm, indeed. You are in Castle Talbot, after all. It is the highest honor any commoner could be blessed with." He frowned and looked the Buneary up and down, something she noticed from the corner of her eye.
"I-Is something the matter?"
"Hmm? Oh, nothing, nothing." He scratched his cheek. "Pardon my rudeness, I…was reminded of a friend. A Buneary like yourself, actually." He narrowed his eyes. "It has been a long time since I have seen her."
"Oh, um…I'm terribly sorry. I'm sure she's alright, though. Maybe."
"Yes…" He tilted his head. "Are you alright? Shy, perhaps?"
"Oh, yes! Terribly shy!" Melissa turned around and fiddled with her mask. "I-I mean, I…I am just in awe of your presence, Prince Talbot. It is…an honor to see you," she mumbled wistfully. "I do hope your friend is doing alright. She must be very important to you."
He looked away. "Indeed. Though our time together was short, I do miss her. I cannot help but think of her whenever I see another female Buneary. I feel like I am going mad with confusion."
Melissa clutched her skirt and whimpered quietly. Do not break, do not break, do not break…
Her friends noticed her discomfort and nodded at each other. Marie stepped forward and said, "Prince Talbot, the day is young, but the night is only so far away. Surely you would rather spend your time catching up with your beloved Adenine."
Adenine gulped and laughed nervously. "Um, yes. Ya said ya wanted me to…meet yer parents. The presentation isn't for a bit like ya said, so what better time than now, right?"
Erasmus' mood seemed to turn around at the mention of it. "Ah yes, of course. They are actually with King Tetrarch right now preparing for it."
Melissa jolted upright. Tetrarch. Darby. Here.
Lillia grinned. "You two have fun now. And Adenine? Don't be too surprised if they start calling you their daughter~."
Adenine squeaked and hid her reddening face again. Erasmus chuckled lightly. "They will like you, do not worry." He gently wrapped his tail around her waist. "You will be fine."
"R-Right. Right…" She took a deep breath and smiled awkwardly. "Sh-Shall we?"
He nodded and led her along. He looked back at the rest of the girls and said, "Like I said, feel free to mingle about, but the upstairs area is off limits. Oh, and try the buffet. Our finest work from the chefs." He continued along his way, leading Adenine around the crowds rather than through them.
Marie waved at them. "Have fun, Addy~!"
Pandora shook her head. "Poor thing looks like she's going to pass out."
Lillia chuckled. "Adenine or Melissa?"
Speaking of the Buneary, they looked back at her as she calmed herself down. They frowned when they noticed her clutching at her chest for something and the slight tremble of her body. Marie reached out and touched her shoulder. "How you holding up, Melissa?"
"F-Fine." She closed her eyes and sighed. "I…was not prepared to see Erasmus again. I was not sure what to say."
Lillia frowned. "You really wanted to tell him you were fine, didn't you?"
"I feel so bad making everyone think I am…well, dead," she whispered. "Erasmus does not deserve that. I just wish there was some other way."
Pandora sighed. "That's life, hon. Don't think about it too much."
Marie patted Melissa's back. "Come on, let's get you something to eat and drink." She glanced at Pandora and Lillia. "You two head off and find a good spot for the presentation. We'll watch from the buffet table."
Pandora nodded. "Alright." She smiled at Melissa. "Take it easy, alright? We're here for Adenine and the secret project. Just…have fun, like you keep saying, right?"
Melissa took a deep breath and sighed through her nose. She smiled and nodded at her. "Right. Right, I will do that."
Pandora grinned before grabbing Lillia's hand. "Come on, I want those front row seats!" She pulled the Meowstic into the crowd.
Marie chuckled and pushed Melissa along. "Come on. Let's grab some food and gawk at boys while they're having fun."
Melissa giggled. "Marie…"
"What? Not interested?"
"…I never said that~."
"Hee! That's my girl!"
Fort Lucus…
Jet pushed open the door to Adenine's hut and entered. "Adenine? Where are you? I have some measurements that need to be done."
He stopped as something rattled in the far back of the hut. He raised his brow as the Kecleon came hopping out from the bathroom, smoothing out the wrinkles in her uniform. Strangely, Sadie was also stumbling out of the bathroom looking out of breath. "Give me a bloomin' minute, you pint-sized wildfire," Adenine grumbled.
Jet crossed his arms. "You've been hanging out too long around us, Adenine. You're accent appears to be slipping. You in a bad mood?"
Her eyes widened. She quickly faced him and broke out into laughter. "What Ah meant to say was…howdy, Jet! How can I help ya on this rootin', tootin' day?"
He glanced past her and toward Sadie. "Anything wrong in there?"
Sadie held up one finger to catch her breath, then straightened up. "Oh? Uh, yeah. Just a plumbing issue. Heh, what did you expect? Pandora designed the system, so it's bound to have some faults in it. Finally rusted away after so long, but we got it working good as new!"
"Hmm." He glanced back at Adenine. "Anyway, I need modifications to some of the rookies' uniforms."
Adenine clicked her fingers at him. "Done and done, don't ya worry, partner?"
An awkward silence lingered between them as Jet's glare deepened. Adenine quietly snapped her fingers again as if it would diffuse the tension. She slowly turned away and started whistling.
"So, are you going to grab your tape measurer or not?" Jet asked.
Her eyes widened. "You mean right now?"
"No, I mean next year—of course I mean right now."
She sucked her lips in. "Ah. Well, you see—"
Sadie quickly pushed her aside and laughed. "Uh, Adenine's very busy with some uniform modifications for me. I haven't worn mine in so long and, well, I've put on a few extra pounds from the luxury eating. Want to feel nice in secure in those Forester uniforms, right? Uh, how about I take care of those measurements? I learned a thing or two about sewing while I was undercover."
"How unusually generous of you, Sadie," he said.
She glared. "Hey, wait, what's that supposed to—"
"By the way, I need to talk to Marie and Pandora about something. When you're done getting those measurements, can you fetch them for me?"
Adenine and Sadie's eyes widened. "W-What do you need them for…pardner?" Adenine mumbled.
He shrugged. "Oh, Jason asked me to conduct a survey on Melissa's hard work since arriving to Fort Lucus, and he figured the best place to start would be her roommates. Actually, while you're at it, fetch Lillia for me. For some strange reason, she was helping Blitz with filing our food inventory when she ran off. Haven't seen her in a couple hours, he said."
Adenine started to sweat. "I, uh, well—"
"Thank you very much, you two, I truly appreciate the compliance." He turned and waved them off as he left.
Sadie slapped herself on the forehead. "Oh shit…" She glanced at the faux Kecleon and saw her body shifting. Skin prickled up where it shouldn't, and feathers started popping up on her head. "JoJo, are you feeling alright?"
She quickly patted her body down. "Y-Yeah, I'm fine. Just…need a moment." She grimaced. "I can't play two people at once, though, or at least without making people run to the hills screaming."
Sadie clenched her fist. "Fear not, I'll take care of it. We're not breaking our cover yet. I got a plan!"
Senbo Capital…
Melissa and Marie giggled amongst themselves as they stood by the buffet table. They picked various appetizers off mindlessly as their attention hovered over the crowd of nobles oblivious to their staring.
Marie swallowed her fruit kabob and flicked the stick away. "Alright, my turn." She pointed at the crowd with a big grin. "The Slowbro in the sparkly top hat, or the Chandelure with the fancy jewels?"
Melissa twirled her kabob between her fingers, humming to herself. "Hmm…Chandelure."
"Really!"
She giggled. "He looks like an intellectual type who I could discuss fine literature with. I do not judge a Slowbro by appearances, but he does not appear to fancy a good book."
Marie smirked. "Honey, I'm asking you which one of them you would rather get to know personally."
Melissa rolled her eyes. "I do not indulge in your strange fantasies, my friend." She bit into her kabob and looked away, hiding her mischievous grin. "That said, it would still be the Chandelure. I would be…curious, to say the least."
Marie snickered. "Oooooh~! Who knew you had a naughty side, my friend?"
"I have to maintain an image, though I will admit the odd depraved thought or two." She nibbled on her kabob just as a Nosepass server shuffled up to them carrying a tray of drinks. They were filled with a pink punch of sorts.
"Excuse me, madams, would you care for a refreshment?" he asked.
Melissa smiled and took one off the tray. "Thank you, kind sir."
He turned toward Marie, but she raised her hand and declined. He nodded and continued on his way. Melissa sipped the juice and shivered as the taste rolled across her tongue. Her feet thumped wildly on the floor, shaking off the jitters firing across her body.
Marie smirked. "Good?"
"Exquisite!" she exclaimed. "What a wonder taste. Reminds me of cherries mixed with lemon. Oh Marie, you simply must try some."
She shook her head. "Eh, I'll pass. I have a policy against accepting drinks I didn't make myself. Only person I trust with my food and drinks is Lambert."
Melissa shrugged. "Suit yourself." She sipped her drink again and sighed. "Delicious." She wiped her lips and pointed at the crowd. "Alright, my turn. Would you rather go with the Aggron with the metal cane or the Drapion in the blue dress coat—"
"Drapion."
"Wow, no hesitation?"
Marie grinned. "Never had any fun with a Bug-Type before. I'm curious what they're like after hours."
"Drapion are not Bug-Types."
"I see a large Pokémon with mandibles and claws, I say Bug-Type." She licked her lips. "Too bad I'm a Steel-Type. I'd be curious what kind of high his venom would give me if he wanted to get feisty."
Melissa laughed. "You are bad~."
"Oh trust me, hon, I've done far worse, but I'm afraid to destroy that fragile innocence of yours if I even breathed a word of my risqué escapades."
Melissa smirked. "Try me."
"Sorry, but these lips are sealed."
"Awww, come on~!"
"Not a chance." Marie chuckled and smiled at her. "Seriously, why do you hide this side of yourself? You always try to act so prim and proper. Why not just loosen up a bit more? You clearly enjoy it."
Melissa smiled down at her drink, twirling the neck of the glass between her fingers. "It is how I have been raised my whole life. It is standard procedure to be a ruler, you know. We must be unshakeable beacons of hope for our subjects, and they expect a certain image from us."
Marie frowned and looked away. "You sound just like him…"
"Hmm?"
"…" She sighed. "Nothing, just talking to myself."
"Hmm…" Melissa sipped her drink again and looked up at the ceiling. "I am curious. How did you come by joining the Foresters?" she whispered.
Marie crossed her arms over her chest and looked away. "Eh, just joined. No real reason."
"Oh come on, there has to be something. No way you joined just because it would be fun."
"I'm not obligated to talk about it." Marie frowned. "Besides, I don't want you to know."
Melissa blinked in surprise. "Why?"
"…Because I don't want you thinking less of me." She closed her eyes. "All flirting aside, I do value you as a friend, and I rather not get you involved with my drama of a life."
"Marie, it cannot be that bad. You are amazing, and you are one of the nicest, most honest people I have ever met. I would never judge you for something you did in the past."
"…" Marie clutched her chest tightly. "It's not just the past…"
Melissa's eyes widened. "Huh? What do…you…"
Marie opened her eyes as Melissa's voice trailed off. "Mels?" She glanced at the Buneary and saw her staring off into space. She clicked her fingers a couple times and waved her hand. "Helllllo? Anyone home?"
"My, my, what a fancy catch I have caught. Two catches, in fact."
A shiver went up Marie's spine. She turned around and came face-to-face with a fancily-dressed Prinplup accompanied by an armored Beheeyem. She backed away to Melissa's side, who was now stuttering and shaking in awe.
"Prince…Darby…" She squeaked and dropped her glass on the floor.
The Tetrarch prince chuckled to himself. "Did I startle you, my dear? Not every day you catch the attention of a prince, no?"
"I…I…I…" Melissa mumbled, feeling a sweat coming down her face.
Darby glanced at a passing Kingler server and whistled. "Good sir, another drink for the lady! And clean this mess up."
The crab scuttled over and handed Darby a drink before quickly wiping up the broken glass and liquid with a rag. He bowed and scuttled off once he finished. Darby smiled and handed the drink to Melissa, who hesitantly took it in her shaky hands.
"A pleasure to meet you, my dear." Darby relieved one of her hands into his wing and caressed it gently. "You are already acquainted with me, I see. And this is my knight, Fulbertus. Do not mind him. And what is your name?"
"M…M…Mel—" Melissa nearly blurted, but Marie elbowed her side.
"Belle," she whispered.
"Belle!" Melissa squeaked.
Darby's beak curled. "Belle. What a lovely name for a lovely girl." He kissed her hand gently, causing Melissa's face to turn several shades of red. "Forgive my staring, I just couldn't help myself. I am naturally drawn to such unspeakable beauty. Are you perhaps a goddess?"
Suddenly feeling parched, Melissa downed her entire glass of punch. She sighed from the refreshing taste and smiled. "O-Oh no, I would not say that, but…th-thank you, Prince Tetrarch."
"Please, call me Darby."
"Heehee! Okay, Darby~."
"If it is not too much trouble, I wish to get to know you better. I do not know why, but you are a radiance that I cannot turn away from."
Melissa squirmed on her heels and giggled. "I would be delighted~!"
Marie stared at the giggling mess of a Buneary and the flirty Prinplup in an uncomfortable silence. Her brow furrowed. She crossed her arms over her chest, growling quietly through her hair. This is the guy Melissa's been so hung up about? Tch! What a load.
"Is everything ready?" King Gilbert asked as he watched his servants wheeled something behind the curtains covered in a sheet.
King Wilkin folded his wings behind his back and nodded. "Everything should be in place. Do you remember your lines?"
Gilbert laughed. "Been practicing before I went to bed. Dear Constance can attest to that."
Constance rubbed up against his side with a smirk. "You were so nervous that I had to coax you back into bed. I was afraid you would not get a decent night's sleep."
"Where would I be without you, my dearest?" Gilbert faced Wilkin. "Where is Queen Saige? I am sure she would want to be here for this."
Wilkin shook his head. "She wanted to mingle with the guests. I believe she is out in the back garden. No use unveiling the surprise if she already knows it."
"Hmm, I see. Well, as long as she is enjoying herself…"
Constance glanced through her peripherals and noticed Erasmus walking toward the stage, accompanied by a Kecleon in a yellow dress. She gasped lightly at how closely they were walking beside each other, with Erasmus even coiling his tail around the chameleon's waist.
"Oh my! Gilbert, look at this."
"Hmm?" He turned just as his son approached the back of the stage. "Hello, Erasmus. How is everyone enjoying the party?" He waved Wilkin along, who nodded and disappeared behind the curtains.
Erasmus smiled. "They are delighted, Father. I am sure they are looking forward to a round of dancing when the presentation is over. I am certainly looking forward to it myself."
Gilbert smiled. "Indeed. And, pray tell, who is your friend there?"
The Kecleon quietly hid her face, but Erasmus gently pushed her arms down. "Mother, Father, I want to introduce you to a close acquaintance of mine, Adenine. Adenine, this is King and Queen Talbot, my parents."
Adenine lifted her face and smiled nervously at them. It was clearly forced. "H-H-Hello, Your M-M-M-M-M-M…" Erasmus caressed her hand, allowing her to calm down. She took a deep breath and continued, "H-Hello, Your Majesties." She curtsied, albeit with a stumble.
Constance smirked. "Acquaintance? My dear Erasmus, you have never held a woman in such a matter."
Erasmus sighed and smiled. "Yes, I suppose. You see, after my marriage to Princess Penworth was abruptly ended, I went back to socializing with the nobles when I came across Lady Adenine. It seemed like fate, but we were drawn to each other. Is that not so, my beloved?"
Adenine blushed, hiding herself behind her umbrella. "I-Indeed. I have never met someone q-quite as dashing as Erasmus, and I never expected to be in the company of the prince himself."
"How long has this been going on?" Gilbert asked.
"A few months, Father."
"Y-Yes. A few months," Adenine added with a nervous laugh.
"I understand I was betrothed to the Verde Princess as a political marriage, and I was willing to do what was right for our kingdom, but I have come to find love from somewhere unexpected." Erasmus held Adenine's hand between his paws. "My dear Adenine has brought me so much joy, and I wanted your approval."
Adenine looked down at the floor. "Ah…I-I am deeply honored to be in your presence, Your Majesties. Prince Erasmus has…given me so much hope since we met." She smiled to herself. "He…helped me through a lot when we came to know each other more. I still wake up wondering if this is all a dream, that I am not fancied by a prince. It is a dream of many girls to be swept up by a dashing prince, but I never thought I would live out that dream. He has been nothing but supportive of my dreams and ambitions. He is the kindest soul I have ever had the privilege of meeting, and I, too, wish for your blessing."
The Talbots, even Erasmus, were stunned by her heartfelt words. Adenine's trembling had stopped, and she spoke with such clarity and honesty that it brought joyous tears to Constance's eyes. "Oh, my dear…" She approached Adenine and took her hand in her paws. "We would love to give our blessing. I have seen Erasmus with many young ladies as he grew up, but I have never seen him speak with such conviction toward a relationship. You must be very special to him."
Adenine blushed with a sheepish smile. "I'm…not that special."
"Do not be so modest. You are a lovely, beautiful young woman."
"…Heh. I never thought anyone would call me beautiful until I met him." Adenine closed her eyes, holding back her tears. "I…I love him. I truly, truly love Erasmus."
Gilbert smiled. He stepped off the stage and stood at his wife's side. "We would be delighted to get to know you more, Adenine. Perhaps we may host a dinner to celebrate. We may even invite your house—"
"NO!" Erasmus and Adenine gasped.
The Talbots recoiled in surprise. "Pardon?" Gilbert asked.
Erasmus and Adenine shared a quick glance. She cleared her throat and said, "W-What we meant to say is that mah—MY parents are very busy people. I happen to be the only one available at my house. I am an only child."
"Oh! I see. Pardon the confusion. Which house are you from?"
Adenine felt a nervous sweat returning. "Um…well—"
"I-It would be rude to ask now," Erasmus interrupted. "Lady Adenine had such a long journey, and the stress of introducing herself nearly took the wind from her sails. Perhaps we can discuss this over that dinner?"
Gilbert nodded. "A fine idea."
"Pst, Gilbert." The royal Houndoom turned and saw Wilkin poking out of the curtains, nodding toward the stage.
"Oh, yes, of course!" He bowed to Erasmus and Adenine. "Terribly sorry, but the presentation will be starting soon. It was lovely to meet you, Adenine. We look forward to having you over again."
Constance winked and added, "With the addition of when the wedding will commence, of course."
Erasmus groaned. "Mother…"
"Eep." Adenine hide her reddened face.
Constance giggled. "Merely a jest…for now." She sauntered off, giving Gilbert a quick peck on the cheek. "Good luck, dear."
"Thank you, Constance." Gilbert followed after Wilkin behind the curtains. He popped out one last time and said, "You two enjoy yourselves. I am sure you both will fancy a dance afterwards." He disappeared behind the curtains.
Erasmus and Adenine shuffled away from the stage and took refuge at a far wall away from the crowd. Adenine pressed her hands against the wall and heaved a heavy sigh. "Oh mah, Ah thought Ah was goin' to screw the whole lie apart like a barrel caught in an angry Excadrill's rampage…"
Erasmus rubbed her back. "You did amazing, Addy. Once they have gotten to know you better, we can ease them into your actual background." He frowned. "I am deeply sorry I am forcing you to lie like this, but—"
"No, no! It's fine, really." She sighed and rubbed her arm. "Ah'm still adjustin' to all this. Ah wouldn't want to them dismissin' me just because Ah'm a seamstress."
He smiled. He lifted himself on his hindlegs and met her at eye level. He placed one paw on her shoulder and another under her chin. "You surprised me with that speech. I never realized how much you thought of me."
She blushed. "Heh. Well…"
"And, naturally, I love you, too." He leaned in and pressed his lips to hers.
Her eyes widened, her whole body turning pink in response. Soon, she relaxed and kissed him back, wrapping her arms around him. With all the risks they were taking, they were all worth it just so she could be with him. She was happy her friends pushed her to attend the party.
Maybe, just maybe, everything would turn out alright.
The nobles gathered closer to the man-made stage as word of the presentation starting spread among them. With drinks in hand and excitement for the unveiling, everyone chattered in anticipation regarding what the project in question was about. Many threw out the possibility of new lighting technology or weapons for the Senbo military.
Pandora and Lillia found their place at the front of the crowd, the former rubbing her paws together eagerly. "Ooooooh, I'm tingling with excitement. Aren't you, Lil?"
Lillia shrugged. "Eh, whatever makes you happy. I'm just here for moral support."
"I like the way you think!"
"Excuse me, ladies?" They turned as a Nosepass squeezed through the crowd with a tray of drinks. "Would you care for refreshments before the presentation?"
"Oooh, yes!" Pandora snatched two off the tray while Lillia levitated one off. The Nosepass bowed and shuffled off. "I have to say, it's not so bad here. Naturally, when I rule over Virdis, I will want the luxury of being served drinks."
Lillia giggled. "Living your best life already."
"Indeed." Pandora sipped her drink. Her fur bristled as a shiver of delight ran down her body. "Woooo! Man, that is delicious!"
Lillia sipped it as well and fell a tingle running down as well. "Oooh, you're right. I feel all nice and fuzzy on the inside~."
Pandora grinned and raised one glass. "Cheers to that, sister!" They clinked their glasses together.
Heralds stepped onto the stage and blew on their trumpets, drawing the crowds attention to the stage. Once they had everyone's attention and the noise died down, they bowed and stepped aside as the curtains drew back. Kings Gilbert and Wilkin stepped forward and bowed to the nobles, causing an uproar of applause to sound in their honor.
Pandora rolled her eyes while Lillia clapped along with a chuckle.
Gilbert raised his paw and silenced the crowd. "Good day, nobles of the many houses between the Senbo and Wick Kingdoms. Thank you for joining us on this exhilarating pursuit toward advancement. Many among you are nobles from a kingdom unlike your own, joined together for a common interest. For too long, the Senbo Kingdom had closed its borders to rest of Virdis in fear of the other. However, times are changing, and the Senbo Kingdom's main drive is to embrace innovation. Progress cannot be made without change. Though I had my doubts, I like to think the partnership spawned by my alliance with King Tetrarch."
The crowd cheered and applauded the two kings.
Wilkin raised his wing and took the lead. "I am most grateful for your acceptance of us, King Talbot. It is true, the regions beyond are two kingdoms are a wasteland of uncivilized minds. Those who ally themselves with the bloodthirsty New Chariot Empire, or the scavengers who dwell below the earth in service of the Subterra Kingdom. Times are changing, and alliance will bolster both kingdoms to ensure our loyal subjects may prosper without fear. That is our sole and just cause. It is for the betterment of the people, for we are entering a perilous time.
"As I am sure most of you have heard, the Verde Kingdom, one of our most esteemed allies, has fallen under a spell of bad luck in recent events. It started with the disappearance of Princess Penworth, and now we hear word a traitor among their staff. A slimy Nidoking who may have ties to a dark period in Virdis' history, and an Audino working under the guise of castle staff serving under the emblem of the Foresters."
The crowd booed in response, shouting their grievances at the Forester name. Pandora awkwardly downed her drink while Lillia took tiny sips of hers.
Wilkin raised his wind and brought silence once more. "Rest assured, we will not allow such an oversight befall our kingdoms again. Though the future of the Verde Kingdom hangs in the balance, we of the Senbo and Wick Kingdoms will not bend the knee towards these heathens. We must remain strong and vigilant, and we will not let the Foresters take advantage of us ever again."
"Here, here!" the crowd shouted.
Gilbert nodded. "However, we are not here to discuss the Foresters, but to unveil the collaborative project between both our kingdoms. Through Senbo's advanced engineers and resources generously donated by Wick, we present the future of transportation that will allow our kingdoms to coexist within hours reach of each other. Ladies and gentlemen, behold!"
The curtain behind them drew back. The crowd and Forester duo gasped at the model standing behind the two kings. It was a display of some sort of wagon, but designed to look like metal. A chimney stood on the nose of the machine with little black puffballs stringed together to resemble smoke. Its wheels were connected together by a rod, and from Pandora could tell, that was designed to move with the wheels.
Gilbert gestured to the model. "Presenting the Senbo Train System! A machine capable of connecting several enclosed, luxury wagons together and pulling across vast stretches of land in mere hours via a track system. As we speak, our finest workers are nearing completion of a tracks, and they will soon be connected between our two kingdoms. The first launch of the train system shall commence on the 19th Clear Glass Moon, from the Senbo Kingdom to the Wick Kingdom. Those among you interested in boarding the first launch shall purchase a ticket here in the Senbo Kingdom. Tickets will be limited until the day after, in which the system will be open to the public. You will have the honor of experiencing our train system firsthand!"
The crowd raised their glasses and cheered for the kings.
Pandora and Lillia shared a shocked look with each other, though Pandora was clearly the most overwhelmed. "A high-speed transport system? Something like that would be…incredible."
"We wouldn't have to rely on Percival's Teleportation Unit to get to faraway places," Lillia whispered. "It wouldn't be instant, but much more efficient. But how could something like this be achieved?"
"Good question." Pandora cleared her throat and jumped up on her hindlegs. "Excuse me, Your Majesties!"
Gilbert looked down at the crowd and spotted the hopping Growlithe. "Yes, my dear, do you have a question?"
Pandora nodded. "Forgive me, I am simply overwhelmed by this fascinating piece of technology you have presented. It truly is a wonderful mark of science that I am in awe by. I am, however, confused by the matter of how such an ambitious device is capable of moving such distances without the aid of steeds. What source of power would allow this vessel to move?"
Gilbert smiled. "A fine question, indeed. Actually, that was a sticking point in the original designs, but I was most fortunate to discover something that circumvented this flaw. This machine is, in fact, powered by Pokémon efforts, but not by the conventional steeds of today. I am humbled to say that we have found a strand breed of Pokémon that have generously offered their services toward the train system."
Pandora's eyes widened. "Really?"
Wilkin pressed his wingtip to his beak and whistled. Instantly, strange figures appeared from under the stage and rose up around the two kings. The crowd recoiled with a gasp at the strange, gear-shaped creatures before them. Several of them came in unusual sizes in shapes, from the twin gears to a larger gear to one with a strange metal ring synchronized with their constant turnings.
Gilbert gestured to the creatures. "These fine Pokémon are known as Klink, Klang, and Klinklang. They are a curious species of Pokémon not common here in Virdis, yet we uncovered in recent years by a survey team of mine. They are said to be from the after times of the Savage Era, nestled within the Great Ruins."
The crowd gasped in shock.
"The Great Ruins?" Pandora mumbled.
Gilbert nodded at the gear Pokémon. "I understand that the Great Ruins are a sore subject for us, but these incredible creatures were willing to assist me with the mechanisms of the train. Their ancestry dates back to a time where they provided their services to an ancient group known as the Arbiters, the original thinkers."
Pandora's eyes widened. "The Arbiters…"
"And they benefit from the process, too. Their species feeds off the electricity they produce through their spinning. We negotiated, and they agreed to help in exchange for what is essentially an endless meal to them."
The Klinklang hovered over the crowd and nodded. "Ew era delbmuh ot edivorp ruo secivres." The crowd squinted at the garbled mess of sounds coming from the creature.
Wilkin coughed and said, "Yes, they do not speak in normal speech, but understand us clearly. Rest assured, it said they are humbled to provide their services."
Pandora raised her paw again. "So, they just link themselves to certain parts of the train, and the energy they provide with compel it to move?"
Gilbert shook his head. "Well, not exactly. Unfortunately, they themselves are incapable of moving the train with sheer strength, or at least with the nine we have here. This brings us to the key to the train's power, and what a marvelous miracle in brought us."
A servant rolled a table onto the stage with a large sheet covering the object. Wilkin took hold of the sheet and nodded at Gilbert. "Feast your eyes, ladies and gentlemen! The Senbo Kingdom's finest discovery!" He whipped the sheet off.
Pandora and Lillia's eyes widened. "Holy moly!" they gasped, as did the crowd.
Beneath the sheet was a sight unlike anything the scientific Growlithe could believe, nor anyone else. It was a large chunk of pure, unrefined elementium the size of a Chansey. It was the largest chunk Pandora had ever lay her eyes on.
Gilbert patted the metal. "An excavation team of mine was unearthing raw material when they happened upon this beautiful chunk of elementium. It may very well be the largest chunk ever discovered. And this will be the key to the train system. Our gear-shaped friends shall combine their electrical abilities and generate them through the combustion system the elementium will be stored in. The power stored inside will eventually overflow and release a combustive force that will be transferred into the pistons that operate the wheels. Through controlled bursts, the Klink line will be able to will the train forward. We hope to use this elementium to discover new ways to operate our train system through the lesser sources found in other metals. It's also much cleaner than relying on coal."
The crowd mumbled amongst themselves in awe. Pandora downed her first and second glasses of punch, unable to take her eyes off the stage.
Gilbert grinned at the crowd. "This is the future of Senbo! Welcome to the new age, my friends!"
"Unbelievable," Lillia mumbled.
"They have history with the Arbiters…" Pandora mumbled. She blinked a couple times from a sudden wave of drowsiness, but shook her head. Just like what Grandpa used to talk about. The Arbiters.
Marie drummed her fingers on the buffet table in boredom as she watched Melissa and Darby laughing and talking together. She held a hard pout as she watched how giggly Melissa was acting around the charming penguin, who seemed to have this smug confidence about him that she didn't like.
She also couldn't help but notice the way his eyes explored Melissa, almost like they were taking in every little detail of her. One would call Marie out as a hypocrite for such a thing, but she didn't stare at people like a hungry predator. It was like an old account of a Mightyena and how they stalked their prey, ready to sink their teeth into their necks.
Melissa sipped her fourth glass of punch and giggled. "That really happened?"
Darby sighed amusedly and shook his head. "Try as I might, the poor fool tried so hard to impress my father that he spent the next hour eating from his soup bowl with a salad fork. We never did let him live it down."
Melissa snorted and laughed. "At least it taught him proper etiquette for next time. Perhaps you should replace all his spoons with forks and see if he accepts it as a challenge on his pride."
"Hubris will be the death of that man's stomach should he subject himself to a diet of fine soups." They threw their heads back and laughed.
Marie pouted harder. Ugh, rich people…
"Oh, my dear, you appear to be almost out of punch." Darby clapped his wings, calling over the Kingler server from before. "Another drink for the lady, please."
"As you wish, Your Highness." He picked a glass off the tray and handed it to Melissa.
She giggled and graciously accepted it before he scuttled away. She sipped the delightfully tasty beverage, savoring the tingling sensation dancing off her tongue. "Mmmm, so good~!"
Darby grinned. "I am glad you enjoy it, my dear. Recommended it myself. Actually, I am curious. Which kingdom do you hail from? What house are you from?"
She giggled and waved it off. "Oh, is that really such a big deal? I am here with you, and that is all that should matter, right? Heehee~!"
Darby chuckled. "Yes, I suppose so. I must be quite lucky." He cupped his wing under her chin. "I just cannot help myself around a beautiful girl."
She teetered on her heels and fluttered her eyes at him. "I have a similar problem when it comes to hunky guys like you~."
Marie narrowed her eyes. She's…oddly flirtatious all of a sudden.
Darby sighed and pulled his wing away, much to Melissa's disappointment. "Alas, my dear Belle, our time together is limited. A shame we only have these precious moments together. Soon, I will travel back to the Wick Kingdom where we may never see each other again."
Melissa gulped down half her drink and set it down. She coiled her arms around his wing and pressed herself close to him. "Welllll, we could always make it worth your time while we still can~."
Marie's eyes widened. Eh?!
Darby shook his head. "Oh no, I could not. It would be unprofessional of me."
Melissa giggled and rested her chin on his shoulder. "No one has to know~."
Darby smirked a little. "Well, I suppose—"
"Eh, excuse me a moment!" Marie suddenly grabbed Melissa and pulled her aside. "Just need to have a quick word about this thing over there!" She pushed the Buneary far enough away from him so they can talk in private. She whispered, "Melissa, what was that?"
Melissa giggled and waved it off. "Whaaaaat? I am just having some fun like you and Pandora said. You know, loosening up and junk. And how can I not help myself to that hunky prince over there?"
Marie glared. She pressed her hands against Melissa's cheeks and squeezed them. "Are you…drunk? You feel kind of flushed." She pulled Melissa's eyelid open. "Weird, eyes are still in focus. How many fingers am I holding—"
Melissa slapped her hands off. "Marie, I'm fiiiiiine…" She spun on her toes, did a little tap dance, and posed. "See? Not drunk. I'm perfectly fine. I just want to have a little alone time with Darby, that's all." She clasped her hands together and pressed them against her cheek with a dreamy stare. "Isn't he amazing?"
Marie grimaced. "If you ask me, I don't like him."
"Awww, is someone jealous?"
Marie's face flushed red. "W-What? NO! I'm not jealous! Why would I be—" Melissa pressed her finger against her lips and shushed her.
"Oh, it's okay, Marie. It's nothing to be ashamed of. There's plenty of love in my heart for you, too~!" She wrapped her arms around the Mawile and gave her a tight squeeze. She even nuzzled her cheek against Marie's face. "I just want my quality time with Darby~."
Marie glared. "Melissa, I'm dragging you outside for some fresh air. You have been in this castle for way too—" Her eyes widened as Melissa suddenly and unexpectedly kissed her on the cheek. Her whole face turned bright red while Melissa pulled away and bounced away with fluttery hops.
"Bye, bestie~!" Melissa exclaimed as she hopped back over to Darby.
Marie stared off into space, her right eye twitching while her face burned red. She pressed her hand against her cheek and slowly looked over her shoulder. She watched as Melissa wrapped her arms around Darby's wing again and prattled on about something the Mawile couldn't hear, all while Melissa looked up at Darby with a lovestruck gaze.
"…What the hell?"
Jet, with his arms crossed, tapped his foot outside of Melissa's hut, waiting to be let in. Apparently, there was something super important going on, and Sadie had to help the girls out before he could be let in. Something, something, girl stuff, she said.
He raised his brow as the door finally swung open. Sadie laughed and gestured inside. "They're ready for you, Jet."
"Hmph." He stepped in and immediately noticed the room was lit with candles, not even inside lanterns. "Kind of dark in here, isn't it?"
Sadie waved it off. "Oh, that's a little mood lighting. Ahem! Marie, Pandora, Jet's here!" She grinned and stepped aside. "Lillia will be by momentarily, too."
"Hmph."
He looked forward as Pandora suddenly sprung out of the darkness with a big, toothy smirk. "How ya doing, Jet? Your favorite megalomaniac is here in the flesh! So, you wanted to hear about Melissa? Boy, I got some stories to tell you!"
"Actually, I was hoping to speak with Marie first."
Pandora frowned. "Oh, you…do? Right, sure. Gotcha. Just, um…one moment." She dashed off behind some chests. Jet raised his brow at the rattling noise.
"Hello, Jetty-Poo~!" Marie suddenly popped up behind him and wrapped her arms around him. "How's my big, strong Oshawott doing today? You want to do something naughty later?"
He kept an even glare. "I just wanted to know how you were faring with Melissa as a roommate."
"Oh, she is a hoot~. Absolute gem. Works so hard, too. You should see her during training. She is so awesome with her apprentices, and have you seen her fur? That girl knows how to clean up!"
"Not quite what I wanted to hear." Jet turned away. "Pandora, your thoughts?" Marie suddenly slinked off, and Pandora jumped back out of hiding.
"Well, as a future dictator, I must say Melissa has what it takes to bring down entire armies with her dumb luck, but if you ask me—"
"Where's the rest of your tail?"
"Eh?" Pandora turned around and saw only a single puffball poking out from under her skirt. "Um…don't stare at my butt, you dirty pervert!"
Jet raised his brow. "I'm just saying, you wouldn't want to give Marie any ideas."
Pandora cupped her paws over her mouth. From nearby, Marie's voice projected out. "Oh, I just don't want you seeing me look unprofessional, that's all."
"Never stopped you before. What's the matter? Finally feeling shame?"
Pandora, for no reason in particular, sat down and whistled. Marie's head and one hand popped out from behind, pointing at him. "I'll have you know, I lost my shame years ago!"
"Hmm. Speaking of, Lillia should be here by now."
Pandora and Marie winced. "Err…one second!" They ducked behind cover again.
A knock sounded off the door. Jet glanced at Sadie, who grinned nervously and shrugged. He turned toward the door and pulled it open, where Lillia stood before him hunched over and panting. She raised one hand as she caught her breath and straightened up.
"H-Hey, Jet. I heard you were looking for me—"
"Where's Melissa?"
Hers and Sadie's eyes widened. "Pardon?" she squeaked.
Jet leaned forward and narrowed his eyes. "Don't you remember, Lillia? I ran into you after I left Adenine's and told you to meet me here with Melissa."
"What?! No, you didn't! I wasn't even—" She immediately paused and sucked her lips in.
"Wasn't even what?" Jet asked, his eyes narrowing deeper.
Lillia gulped and laughed nervously. "Um, I mean…oh, there she is!" She scooted her body around the doorframe, and Melissa's head suddenly popped in, pressing her cheek against Lillia's. "Say hi, Melissa!"
"H-Hiya, Jet!" Melissa said with a strained voice. "H-How's it going?"
"Melissa, what are you doing here? You're supposed to be helping your apprentices."
Her eyes widened. "W-What?! But you just said you—you!" She and Lillia started trembling and shaking.
Jet raised his brow. "Is something the matter?"
"I…I…I…AAAAHHHHH!"
He stepped out of the way as a two-headed Meowstic/Buneary threw herself into the hut. She shifted and shaped into multiple forms at once, once as a Mawile with Adenine's head inside the hair and as a Buneary head atop a Growlithe's body.
Jet watched the cavalcade of transformations take place while Sadie tried to stealthily sneak out. He caught her arm before she could get away.
JoJo's rapid transformations finally came to an end as she lay sprawled out on the floor, draped in her red cloak. She ended up stuck as a Buneary with a Meowstic's color palette, white fur and blue fluff, and a blue Growlithe's tail. "Oooooh, everything hurts." She sat up and looked herself over as her pupils returned to their star shape. "…Huh. I kind of like this look."
"OW!" She jolted as Sadie collapsed to the ground, whimpering as she held her aching head. "Oh, I did not miss that…"
"I freakin' knew it." The girls winced and hugged each other as Jet marched toward them with his scalchop in hand. "Thought you could pull a fast one over me, huh?"
Sadie grinned nervously. "N-Now Jet, be r-r-reasonable…"
JoJo gulped. "What gave me away?"
"To be honest, everything. What originally gave you away? You were using contractions while you were Melissa, and you didn't correct yourself once."
"…" JoJo facepalmed. "So, those were the grammatical mistakes Lucient meant."
"Now then…" The girls gasped as he grabbed their ears and started dragging them out of the hut. "We're going to have a nice, long talk with Jason, and you're going to tell us where the girls disappeared off to."
Sadie and JoJo shared a worried look. Oh no.
