New Beginnings
He sat alone under the stars. On a chunk of debris. In the snow. A tattered suit, once just messy, now ripped and coated with mud…and blood. Some of it his, most of it not. This suit of silk is all that keeps the snow form him. But it cannot stop the cold. Nothing stops it, as it seeps deeper in to his core. And chills his already frozen heart.
He remembers
The once proud empire. Now nothing but rubble.
His blood.
He remembers
Being a part of the empire, tall, proud and dominant. It would have fallen earlier if not for him. He and his colleagues eliminated the threats.
The other blood.
He remembers
His boss sat in that wheelchair. Sick. Dying. Dead.
His colleagues sent to hell by blades and bullets.
Now he is all that is left. Alone.
He had though his life, this life, would be a thrill. It was, when it had all began.
He stood. Shaken from his thoughts. There was another city, not far from here. On the coast. Waves. Cliff. Ocean.
He walked. Drifting in his mind, drifting, drifting
He stood atop the ocean cliff. Staring at the ink like water. Staring at the waves rolling in. at the static rocks the waves washed over.
His mind flew to the east, over the water. To the predawn light. It flew to the waters surface.
It called to him.
He smiled.
He flew
He flew only to be swallowed by the ocean, in a bone crunching collision with the water.
He went down and down. Still conscious and still alert. Down and down. Till his lungs were empty.
Then up. Up. Up with burning lungs. With burning lungs he breached the surface, gasping for air. He floated, staring at the stars. How beautiful they are. He was too tired and in too much pain to swim. He let the waves wash him to the small beach at the base of the cliffs.
He just lay there. On the wet sand. The fall had broken his arm and several ribs. He was in pain.
Despite his discomfort for the first time in 20 years he looked on the world as truly beautiful.
He tuned his head and watched the sunrise
A new day had begun.
