The next few weeks were so hectic that they hadn't been able to spend much time together at all. Shanan had been on a few short missions herself and the boys' very first mission turned out to be longer than they had expected and really dangerous. They'd had to fight some really powerful shinobi. But they finally made it back and told Shanan all about it. Sasuke had been injured pretty badly by a kid their own age and Naruto had unleashed a powerful attack in order to protect him.
"Shanan, the chakra that came out of him was... not Naruto. He was an animal. He's been trying to catch up to me, but I don't think he's as far behind as we all thought," he said as they were leaving to meet up with the rest of Team seven and Team Guy.
Sasuke closed the door and Shanan waved like usual. "Why do you always wave?" He had always been curious, but felt rude asking. Now that they openly liked eachother, though, he thought maybe it would be ok to finally ask her.
Shanan looked at Sasuke and seemed upset. She didn't know. She knew she had forgotten why awhile ago, but it was always hard for her when lost memories were brought up. She shouldn't be mad at Sasuke, but this felt like an important thing to her and his asking made her feel a little silly about it. She didn't want to stop the ritual and she couldn't explain to him why.
Sasuke quickly realized that he had made her feel bad. "I'm sorry. You don't have to explain anything to me," he said reassuringly. He hated seeing her upset, even a little and she looked a little heartbroken right now. He couldn't handle it. "I'm sorry," he said again as he grabbed her hand and squeezed it.
Shanan's face softened a bit, as she tried to push it out of her mind. She knew she couldn't be upset with either of the boys for too long. "It's alright. I'm not mad at you, just surprised this is the first time you've asked." She laughed a little, which seemed to make Sasuke feel a bit better.
"Oh, I wanted to tell you," he changed the subject as they started to walk, still holding hands. "When we were fighting, Kakashi Sensei used a lightning attack he called Chidori. And so on our way back we were talking and I told him about the time you had that lightning come out of your hand. He didn't seem too concerned, but he did say that he should probably have a look at yours soon. He said lightning types are pretty rare and that you might need some guidance on how to properly use yours."
Shanan had been wanting to work on it for some time now and she had attempted to use it a couple of times since the initial incident, but each time she did, it reacted with her water type and it took hours for her to make it stop. She hadn't told the boys about her attempts, though, because she was embarrassed that she couldn't figure it out on her own. So hearing that their sensei had lightning type too made her happy, and she was glad she was finally going to get to meet him.
"That would be great," she said appreciatively.
"Shanan," Hinata yelled softly at her from a few yards away. She ran over from her own team to walk with Shanan and Sasuke. "Are you going to hear the Hokage's announcement?" she asked. "I wonder what it's gonna be."
"Good question." Shanan had heard there was going to be an announcement a few days ago and they didn't gather everyone like this very often, she thought.
As they approached the crowd that had gathered, she saw Team Guy and Naruto and Sakura as well. "Hey guys," Shanan yelled as she and Sasuke ran towards them.
"Hello, Shanan," said a calm and familiar voice as he stepped out from just behind Guy Sensei to stand in front of her.
"Kakashi," she said as she smiled big at the white-haired man. It had been seven years since the pair had seen one another and every memory of him came flooding back in an instant to her. "I still wave at you, you know," she told him.
"I know," he said contentedly.
