Chunin exams. That was the big announcement. They started in two weeks, so everyone was training more than usual in order to prepare. They were finally getting some time to relax in the shade and have a quick bite to eat before they got back to it.
Sasuke had noticed that Shanan seemed happier lately. He knew why, as she had told him, Naruto and Hinata all about the memories she had finally remembered after seeing Kakashi. And even though he loved seeing her smile, he hated that the reason wasn't because of him, but because of someone else. He also knew it was ridiculous to worry and be jealous, but he really didn't like the fact that Shanan was about to train alone with Kakashi to work on her Chidori before the Chunin exams started.
Shanan, however, had been looking forward to it. Not only would she finally get a handle on her lightning type chakra, but she got to spend time with Kakashi, who she missed, even though she didn't remember that she did. He was the first person she remembered. Darkness and then Kakashi. She remembered that. Finally. How could she have ever forgotten him?
She also finally remembered something else from the first night of her memories that she thought she should tell Sasuke about. She took a drink of her water and readied herself for any negative reactions Sasuke might have, just in case, as this was often a very sensitive subject for him.
"Hey so... I remembered something else," she started tentatively. "I, um... I met your brother once. I remember a boy that looked similar to you. And I finally remembered hearing his name. He was there that night," she paused as she shook her head, "and he thought I was crazy," she looked nervously at Sasuke.
Sasuke considered the information and couldn't believe the ridiculousness of it. "How interesting that he would think of anyone else as crazy, most of all you." He laughed, but any mention of his brother always brought back at least a small desire for revenge. He knew that desire would have been stronger and more present if it weren't for Shanan and Naruto. And he wanted to restore his clan, but he had also made a new one and was happy. It was hard not to feel guilty for trying to move on from, what he had decided was, a childish wish. And he had hoped that the desire would completely dissipate sooner, rather than later.
Shanan could barely sleep the night before her first training session. But she managed to get a few hours at least. She could sense Sasuke's jealousy, but she pushed it out of her mind as she didn't want it to dampen her excitement. He would get over it eventually like he did when she joined Team Guy.
In the morning Shanan woke up a few minutes early and got ready as quietly as she could so as not to wake anyone up. As she stepped outside she went to wave, but thought maybe she finally didn't need to anymore.
Kakashi was already waiting when Shanan arrived at the training spot. He was leaning casually against a tree, one hand in his pocket and one hand holding the book he was reading.
Shanan laughed when she saw it. "Make-out Tactics? Still?" she asked as she walked towards him. She knew what it was now that she was almost fifteen and almost doubled over laughing when he started blushing and put the book into his pocket.
"Alright now," he said half embarrassed, half amused. "How's your reading list?"
"It's good. I used to read to the boys quite a bit, actually. I had some favorites that I've read a few times over the years. I remember now that a few of those were some that you had either read to me, or recommended..." she said before trailing off. She paused as she looked down. "I had forgotten all about you. Or... I thought I did," she said apologetically.
Kakashi was still leaning back against the tree, hands in pockets looking off into the distance. He knew she would eventually forget about him and he had wanted her to. He turned towards Shanan and pulled his mask down and smiled. "Shanan, don't feel bad about that, ok? Things would've been much harder for you if you hadn't. You've done well for yourself. Not many people are able to move on from their past the way that you have. And honestly, I've spent so much time away from the village anyway. I've checked on you as often as I could over these years and I'm really proud of you."
Shanan felt a little embarrassed, but comforted at the same time. "Thanks, Kakashi," she smiled a half smile and laughed. "And you even remembered about the mask."
"Of course," he shrugged. "Don't tell the boys though, ok? They'll never leave me alone about it," he smiled as he stood up straight and walked towards Shanan. "Now let's talk about this lightning type chakra. Sasuke said it engulfed your right hand out of nowhere." He grabbed her hand to examine it. "That... should not have happened."
"No, I didn't think it should. But everytime-" she paused for a second and decided she could tell Kakashi, "everytime I've tried to use it again it sends electric shocks through my body for hours. It's really painful, actually," she said as she bit her lip. She didn't know why, but she felt kind of ashamed about it.
"Don't ever be embarrassed for trying to get control of a new ability. These things take time. I've worked for months on unlocking and perfecting new Sharingan. You did what you could," he assured her. "But let's see what we can do to make it better." He started towards a more open space in the grass and Shanan followed. "I know water is your main type, but we have to work on separating the two and using them individually." He stopped and turned back towards Shanan. "And then we can work on switching back and forth seamlessly and even one day joining them to create something very powerful."
Shanan nodded in confirmation. She was excited to finally have some one-on-one training geared towards her own unique abilities and she was glad that it was with an old friend.
