Naruto was finally awake and had already heard from Jiraiya about his leaving soon. Shanan could tell that he was looking forward to it, she knew that he would be, so she put on the bravest face she possibly could and pretended to be excited for him too.
She also refused to let Naruto feel any responsibility about Sasuke not coming home. Even though he kept blaming himself and apologizing to her.
It was finally time for him to return home and Shanan was glad for the company. She really did cry less with him there.
And he was really excited to see her Sharingan. She still didn't know if she could do anything with it, though. She had been meaning to ask Kakashi to train her since he was the only one around that could now. But she hadn't seen him since she told him and Jiraiya to go away.
"Does it feel any different when you activate it?" he asked her, excitedly.
"I think a little, but I'm not sure." She shrugged.
Naruto was inches from her face examining her eyes closely. "I like yours better than the regular one. Try to use it on me."
"What?! No! That could be really dangerous."
"Come on! You can control it. It's your Sharingan," he assured her. "Just see if anything happens and if it does then stop. I know you won't hurt me."
Shanan thought about it for a few minutes. It was dangerous. But she really didn't think she would hurt Naruto, even if she didn't know what she was doing. Sasuke could control his right away when it was unlocked.
"You know you want to," he sang.
"Ugh... ok. We can try. But I'm sure nothing's gonna happen."
They sat across from one another as Shanan stared into Naruto's eyes.
"Do you see anything yet?" He asked impatiently.
"Shh!"
She continued to stare for a few minutes and was still sure that nothing would happen. She could sense a lot of excitement from Naruto, though.
And then, everything went black.
Suddenly, a man appeared. He was tall and handsome and had yellow hair. But it wasn't Naruto. He was with a woman. She had long red hair, she was very pretty and she was holding a yellow haired baby. But she was crying.
Black.
She saw the couple again. And the baby. Naruto. The couple had something through them. They were dying and saying goodbye to the baby. Shanan couldn't help but cry and feel helpless as she watched the couple in their last moments.
Black.
She saw Naruto again. He was older. He was alone. Kids teased him and ran away from him. Even adults avoided him and looked at him as if he were some kind of monster. Shanan buried her face in her hands as she remembered how outcast he had been for so long, even after they'd met.
Black.
She saw him again. He was fighting so hard against Sasuke to bring him home. Sasuke had transformed into something monstrous that she didn't recognize and the look in his eyes wasn't him as he beat Naruto down. Shanan's face shook as she dropped to her knees and watched two people that she loved very much try to kill each other. All she wanted to do was stop them, but she couldn't. She was helpless in this memory.
Black.
She saw him again at 5 years old, dirty face and clothes, sitting alone on a swing, surrounded by darkness. She walked up behind him and watched him cry.
"Naruto," she whispered.
He looked up at her, still with tears in his eyes.
She knelt down and opened her arms and he ran up and hugged her tight.
She wrapped him up as tight as she could. He was so small. "I'll always be here for you, little brother," she assured him as tears ran down her face.
Black.
Shanan blinked with tears in her eyes.
Naruto looked up at her with tears in his eyes. "Were those my parents?"
Shanan nodded, but just barely. It had all been so sad. She had no way of stopping it and had no idea that Naruto could see it all too.
"I'm so sorry you saw that," she said, crying.
"You're kidding, right? I finally got to see my mom and dad. I got to hear them say goodbye to me! Thanks, sis," he said as he smiled at her, tears running down his cheeks.
She wiped her tears and smiled back before she reached out and pulled him in for another hug and they squeezed each other tight.
"How'd you even do that?" he asked her as he sat up.
"I have no idea."
"I'm sorry you had to see Sasuke like that," he said suddenly.
Shanan stared off as her face shook again. She didn't really know what to say about it. He went searching for more power. But that seemed like too much power and that had happened right after he'd left. "I'm sorry he hurt you, Naruto," she said as her voice broke.
Naruto put his arm around Shanan and sat quietly with her for a while. But not too quietly.
"What do you think you'll call that technique?" he asked curiously.
Shanan thought about it. She had never named a thing, except for no-handed jutsu and that was very literal.
"I think I'll call it... Kurushimi." she said sadly.
