Shanan and Kakashi were eleven years old now.
Moving back into his old house was hard for Kakashi at first, but with Shanan there it made it much easier.
It wasn't a big house, but it was nice. The front door slid open to the living room. Behind the living room was a big eat-in kitchen. Off to the left of the living room was the hallway. On the left side of the hallway was the master bedroom, the bathroom and Kakashi's room. On the right side was a large closet and Shanan's room. At the end of the hall, in between their rooms, was a small table with a vase.
Kumiko had always tried to teach Shanan to be proper, which included lessons on how to cook, sing and paint at an early age. Kakashi had also shown an interest in cooking when he saw Shanan doing it once, so Kumiko taught him too.
The two of them spent most of their time together. They were in the same class, they had the same friends and despite having their own rooms, Shanan had taken to sleeping in Kakashi's bed with him after she lost her parents. And every night before they fell asleep they gave each other a hug and said, "I love you" just like Shanan's parents always had with them.
Everyday when they got home they trained together, they cooked together, they ate together and they read together.
Shanan got a big monthly allowance, because her parents had a lot of money, so they were able to buy anything they needed. Including a nice bookshelf so that they could build their own little library and Kakashi was able to stock his room with plenty of art supplies and sketchbooks.
At school Kakashi received a lot of attention from most of the girls. They liked the intellectual artist vibe he apparently gave off. He still always carried his bag everywhere with him. He was in love with Shanan, though. He didn't hide it, but he never tried to make it obvious either. Everyone but her seemed to know that he did.
She didn't like him like that, but she definitely thought the attention he received was annoying. Mostly because of her number one enemy Mazumi liking him so much.
And Shanan had a secret crush on Asuma Sarutobi, which drove Kakashi nuts.
Most days during break and for a while after school, Kakashi would find a shady spot to draw in while Shanan read to him.
But today, she had left school in a pretty bad mood, so they went straight home. It usually didn't take Kakashi very long to get it out of her, though.
"You seem upset," he said as they were walking home.
She rolled her eyes at him, but didn't say anything.
"Ok... are you not gonna tell me?" he asked her.
"No," she said curtly.
He sighed at her, but didn't press further.
They walked in silence the rest of the way home and when they got there, Shanan went to sit in the kitchen to read while Kakashi sat on the couch to draw.
After about thirty minutes she got up to get something to drink and decided to slam the cabinets closed and slam her cup down, several times.
Every few seconds he would look up and sigh without saying anything, before going back to his drawing, which made her more angry, so she did things even louder.
"Are you sure you don't wanna talk about it?" he asked calmly.
"Talk about what?!" she yelled as she sat back down.
He sighed again and went back to his drawing.
Things stayed quiet until it was time to make dinner and he got up to go into the kitchen.
"Are you hungry? Do you wanna help me make something?"
She rolled her eyes at him, but got up to help anyway, and they made and then ate dinner quietly.
"Do you want me to read to you?" he asked her. He didn't know what was going on, but even if she didn't want to talk, he still wanted to be nice to her.
She glared at him and then went to the bathroom.
When she came out he was back on the couch reading.
She watched him angrily from the end of the hallway.
"Mazumi said you talk about me behind my back," she finally said through tears.
He looked up and sighed again before turning to look at her.
"And you believe her?" he asked incredulously before he went back to his book.
"Do you? She said that you wish you could live alone because I'm annoying," she said as the tears were building up pretty heavily.
He stayed calm as he looked up from his book and stared forward.
"Shanan, she only said that to you because she likes me," he said, exasperated.
She looked at him in disbelief.
"Well... what does that have to do with me?"
He thought for a moment. "Because we live together."
She started to walk down the hall and then turned back around deciding that she had more to say as tears streamed down her face.
"Maybe tell your girlfriend to stop acting like a psycho and leave me out of your relationship... and stop wearing your mask at home!" she yelled before storming off down the hall and slamming Kakashi's door.
He sighed again before closing his book and pulling his mask down; he knew she hated it when he kept it up around just her. He calmly got up to walk down the hallway and knocked on his bedroom door.
"This is my room, you know?" he said as he leaned against the wall by the table.
She opened the door and looked at him furiously as the tears ran down her face.
"You know I would never say any of that," he said gently.
She turned around and grabbed her pillow and pushed past him as she walked to her own bedroom door.
"No, Shanan... I didn't mean you couldn't stay in my room. I was just trying to get you to open the door," he pleaded.
She looked back at him and opened the door to her room that she hadn't slept a full night in once and fell to the ground, still crying. She knew she was being dramatic and that he didn't want her to change rooms, but she couldn't control how angry she was feeling.
He started to come in behind her before she kicked the door closed in his face. He sighed heavily again and went and leaned against the bathroom door.
She sat on the floor and thought about it for a while. He wouldn't say any of those things, she knew that. But she didn't understand why Mazumi would lie just because she had a crush on him.
She started to feel guilty for yelling and kicking the door in his face and she really didn't want to sleep alone. So she finally got up and opened the door and saw him still standing there patiently with his hands behind his back, looking down at the floor.
"Sorry I'm a jerk," he said as he looked up at her.
She shook her head at him as she wiped her nose. "You didn't do anything wrong, Kakashi. I'm the jerk. I'm sorry," she said.
"I'm sorry you had a bad day," he said as he went to hug her.
She laughed a little as she hugged him back. "Thanks. Love you, Kakashi."
"I love you too, Shanan," he said as he smiled.
