Chapter 12
Rescue
At their apartment, Barbara and Kara were getting ready for their night's petrol. As they changed into their respective hero outfits, Kara took a quick peek at the redhead as Barbara put the top of her suit on. Barbara was just about to put her mask on when she paused and looked down.
"Are you sure you'll be alright for our tonight petrol?" Kara asked with concern.
Barbara hesitated for a second. "I'll be alright really." Barbara said trying to hide the sorrow in her voice.
"Barbara, if you're not up for it you don't to. I can do it by myself."
"No, it's fine Kara. I need fresh air anyway." Barbara said in a sad but genuine voice.
"Ok then." Kara said.
Barbara put her mask on and the two left the apartment and flew up to the roof, Kara carrying Barbara.
Ivy walked down the street with her head held low, the rain was falling harder now and puddles covered the roads and pavement. Soon she came to a bar called the Timm's. Ivy knew this bar all too well, it was the bar where Ivy had realized her feelings for Harley.
The two were sitting at a table with two cocktails. They had just come back from a successful heist and decided to go out for a celebration drink.
"Do you think the police are still looking for us?" Harley Quinn said.
"Probably, but they're not the ones we need to watch out for." Ivy said then took a sip of her cocktail.
"Yeah. Batman or one of his annoying sidekicks are probably on their way right now." Harley joked.
"They'll be disappointed that they couldn't catch us." Ivy said, causing Harley to laugh.
"You know this is the most fun I've had in a while." Harley said.
"Well you deserve it, especially after the way you know who treated you." Ivy said. Harley lightly nodded her head. She and Joker had had another fallout three weeks again, more so Joker losing his temper and beating her with a crowbar and kicking her out of the gang again. Like every other time this had happened, Harley went to live with Ivy, however unlike the previous times this had happened, Harley was moving in permanently with Ivy.
"Why did think I ever think he was the one for me." Harley said, with shame and embracement.
"Shouldn't blame yourself, he was the one that tricked you and at least you're free from him now." Ivy said.
"Yeah, still I do wish had someone in my life."
"Don't worry, you'll find someone eventually." Ivy said.
"Thanks, Red." the woman in black and red said. "Do you think you'll ever find your true love?" Harley asked fluttering her eyes in a teasing way.
Ivy rolled her green eyes. "I doubt it." Ivy said.
"I don't know a beautiful woman could catch someone's eye. Maybe It will happen the same way it did for my mum." Harley said.
"Oh, how did it happen for her?" Ivy asked.
"My mum said she knew that dad was the one when she saw his eyes sparkle in the light." Harley said.
"That might be the cheesiest thing I have ever heard." Ivy said as took another sip of her drink.
"Oh you never know, it could happen to you Red." Harley said.
"Sure and maybe one day you'll..."
Ivy stopped as she looked into Harley's blue eyes, she had never noticed how they sparkled when the light hit them just right. The green-skinned woman's heart beated loudly, as she stared at the blonde, mesmerized by her beauty.
"Red? Are you ok?" Harley asked.
Ivy shook her head as she came back to reality.
"Sorry I forgot what I was going to say." Ivy said.
"Ok. So what you doing tomorrow night." Harley asked.
"I'll let you know tomorrow, yet just have fun tonight." Ivy said.
Harley smiled and the two continued chatting, with Ivy slowly coming to the realization that she did love Harley.
Ivy entered the bar and sat at the stand. The man behind the stand came up to her, cleaning a beer glass as he did so.
"What can I get ms." the bartender asked.
"A cocktail, please." Ivy said.
The put down the beer glass, then he got a cocktail glass and poured a drink into it.
"Thanks." Ivy said. The man returned to cleaning the beer glass.
Ivy looked down at the bar stand with her head leaning on her left hand. She had barely touched her drink. Ivy looked over to the other side of the bar. Several couples were talking, laughing amount themselves, and some even kissing. The sight just made Ivy more upset, reminding her of how she had ruined her friendship with Harley and lose any chance of being with her. She hated herself for it.
One of the couples, a woman in a blue dress with blond hair in a ponytail and a man in a red shirt, dark grey trousers, and black hair, were laughing to themselves and talking about their day.
"Remember when we went to the beach the other day and you got your chips stolen by a seagull?" the woman said.
"I remember. I also remember how you tried to show off and almost fell off rocks." He said with a laugh.
"Yeah." the woman said in a chuckle with a hint of embarrassment. "Thanks for catching me, again."
"I did promise I won't let anything happen to you." the man said, bringing his girlfriend in closer. She kissed him on the cheek.
Ivy looked down at the stand again, exhaling through her nose as she did so. She remembered saying the same thing to Harley the night they had run into... Ivy's eyes slowly widened as she remembered what Joker had said and realized her mistake. She handed the bartender a fifteen-dollar note.
"Keep the change." Ivy said then she ran out of the bar, she ran as quickly as she could toward the spot where she had left Harley and looked around. She then came to the dark alleyway. As she looked around until she found someone that made her heart stop. On the ground was a small drop of blood and next to it was a footprint of a shoe. The same kind of shoes that Joker wore. Ivy muttered the word no under her breath. She ran to their house, praying that her worst fear hadn't come true.
Ivy opened the door and looked around the house. "Harley." she cried, but there was no reply. "Harley!" Ivy shouted but still, no one answered. The more she looked more worried she got. After she had looked everywhere, she knew that there was only one place Harley could be... Joker's hideout.
Ivy quickly left the house, hoping she was too late.
Meanwhile, Barbara and Kara walked across the rooftops of some buildings near the alleyway. Batgirl was trying her best not to look upset.
Supergirl looked at her girlfriend with sympathy as she spoke to her.
"Hey, you'll be able to make amends with him." Supergirl said putting her hand on Batgirl's shoulder.
"I hope can." Batgirl said in a sorrowful voice.
"Trust me you will." Kara said.
Batgirl looked at her girlfriend with a small smile before it faded and she looked down again.
"Is there something else bothering you?" Supergirl asked.
The woman in black hesitated for a moment before she spoke. "I've been thinking and I don't want to keep our relationship a secret anymore." Batgirl said.
Supergirl looked at Batgirl slightly surprised.
"Are you sure?" Supergirl asked. Batgirl nodded. "Alright, we'll tell the league tomorrow." the blond said.
Batgirl smiled again and hugged the woman in blue. Once she was done Batgirl let her go so that Supergirl could fly up to keep a lookout, Batgirl took the opportunity for a quick peek.
"See anything?" Batgirl asked. Supergirl looked around, she noticed a green blur head toward them.
"Someone running down this alleyway." The Argon said pointing at the figure.
Batgirl looked with her binoculars in the direction that Supergirl had pointed to. Batgirl saw that it was Poison Ivy.
"Looks like Ivy is up to something." Batgirl said as she lowed her binoculars.
Ivy ran as fast as she could down the alleyway. Suddenly Batgirl landed in front of her. The green woman went to turn only for Supergirl to fly down from behind.
"Where did you're going?" Batgirl demanded in a stern voice.
"Out of my way, Batbrat." Ivy said trying to get past the woman in black. Supergirl grabbed her and held her hands behind her.
"What are you up to Ivy." Supergirl said.
"It's none of your business, now let me go." Ivy said, catching the two heroes off guard by how she sounded more worried than angry.
"What going on Ivy?" the blonde asked.
Pamela hesitated for a moment, she knew she had no choice but to tell them.
"I'm going rescue Harley." Ivy said.
"What's the real reason?"
"I'm being serious, she's been kidnapped by Joker." Ivy said.
"Why should we believe you?" Batgirl asked.
"Do you think I lie about her being in danger? I need to save her." Ivy said.
"Why would you rescue her?" Batgirl said.
"Because I love her." Ivy shouted in a sad voice. The two heroes were surprised by this.
"I thought you didn't care for other people?" Supergirl said.
"You think because I'm against most of humanity that I couldn't find love?" Ivy said.
Supergirl let go of the woman in green.
"How did she get into Joker's hands." Supergirl asked.
"We got into a fight and I accidentally called her Joker's yes woman. She left and Joker took her." Ivy said in a sorrowful tone.
"Why were you fighting?" Batgirl asked.
"I don't want her to know that I loved her." Pamela said.
"Why didn't you?" Supergirl asked.
"Because I wanted her to safe from people who hate gays." Ivy said.
"I know how that feels." Batgirl said.
"How would you know?" Ivy asked. The two heroes hesitated for a moment and then the blonde spoke.
"Because we've been in the same situation." Supergirl said.
Ivy looked at them in surprise. "You two are a couple?" Ivy asked, Batgirl nodded. Ivy weighed her options, she knew what she had to do even if it was the last thing she wanted to do. "You have to help me rescue her." the woman in green said. The two superheroes were taken by surprise that Ivy would ask them for help.
"Please. I can't lose her." Ivy said, now begging on her knees.
Batgirl and Supergirl looked at each as they made their decision.
At the Joker's hideout, Harley was just being to wake up. She groaned as her eyes slowly opened and then shot open as the memories of what had just happened returned to her. She looked down seeing her hands were tied up to a pole. She was just about to try and free herself when she heard footsteps approaching her. Joker smiled cruelly as he approached the scared woman
"Hello Harley." he said in a calm voice. Harley didn't dare speak, scared of what he might do to her if she did.
"What's the matter Harley, don't you want to be with your... what was it you use to call me?" Joker asked rhetorically.
Harley once again reminded silence Joker was begging to lose his patience. He glared at his terrified ex-girlfriend. "Say it Harley." he said trying to keep calm.
"You're not my pudding anymore." Harley said trying to sound brave.
The bleached white man's eye twitched, and then a horrible grin appeared on his face.
"Oh, Harley you've upset me." Joker said. Harley's eyes widened in fear, she knew what that meant. "You know what happens when someone upsets me." The man in purple walked over to a table and picked up a crowbar.
"Joker please no." Harley said tears forming in her eyes. Joker just kept walking up to her. "Jack please no!" Harley screamed in pure terror.
Joker stopped just a few feet from Harley and prepared to swing the crowbar as hard as he could. "This will teach you not to disobey me!" He shouted. Harley closed her eyes. Joker was just about to hit her when something yellow knocked the crowbar out of his hand. Harley opened her eyes as Joker turned round to see Batgirl, Supergirl and Ivy standing not too far from them.
"Well if it isn't Poison Ivy, here to save her princess." Joker said in a mocking tone.
"Let her go Joker." Ivy demanded.
"I would but we've got some catching up to do." Joker said. "Boys, take care of them."
Serval of Joker's goons rushed over to deal with the three women. "So what's the plan?" Supergirl as she punched one of the goons.
"You two deal with the goons, I'll get Harley." Ivy said, then she rushed off to deal with Joker.
Batgirl and Supergirl dodged and hit serval of the goons. Supergirl lifted up one of the henchmen and throw him across the room. Batgirl ducked, avoiding a punch from another one of the goons, then she knocked him down with her legs.
Meanwhile, Ivy had just reached Joker and the two began to fight. Joker throws a fist at her, but the green woman dodged it. Ivy kicked him in the stomach knocking him to the ground. Ivy rushed over to Harley and began to untie her.
"Red, you came to rescue me." Harley said.
"Of course I am. I'm promised I wouldn't let anything happen to you." Ivy said as she tried to loosen the knot.
Joker got up. He grabbed a nearby knife and ran toward the green woman with an angry expression on his face.
"Ivy look out!" Harley shouted. Ivy looked up, Joker tried to stab her but luckily the planet woman avoided it just in time.
"Stay away from her!" Joker said as he fought Ivy
"I'm not letting you treat her like crap ever again." Ivy said dodging another stab attempt. Harley tried to wiggle herself free from the loosened knot.
Meanwhile Batgirl was fighting one of the goons. He managed to hit her, knocking her to the ground. He put his foot on her stomach to hold in plays as he got out his knife. Supergirl saw this and rushed over, the blonde in blue hit the goon as hard as she could, knocking him unconscious.
"Thanks." Batgirl said as Supergirl helped her up.
"Don't mention it." Supergirl said. The two superheroes returned to face the rest of the goons.
Meanwhile, Ivy and Joker were still fighting, whilst Harley had just managed to free herself, she turned to see Joker knock Ivy to the ground in a corner. Ivy looked up, she had nowhere to run to and nowhere to hide as Joker cornered her. Harley ran as fast as she could as Joker prepared to kill Ivy with an evil glee smile on his face. Ivy looked up with fear as Joker raised the knife high, but before he could plunge the sharp knife into her green skin, Harley grabbed his arm.
"Let go you stupid bitch." Joker demand.
"I'm not letting you kill the woman I love." Harley shouted at him.
Joker glared at her. "If I can't have you then no one can." He said. He pushed as hard as he could, causing her to fall to the floor.
Ivy got up and help and went over to Harley, but two goons caught her and held her. She tried to fight them but as soon as she got one off her, the other managed to get a hold of her.
Harley crawled on the floor backward unit she reached a wall. She looked up in horror as Joker raised the knife. He lunged it towards her, she just about dodged it, although it did tear her outfit on the right side of her jester's costume. Joker tried to pull the knife out but it was firmly stuck in the wall. Harley crawled away, before getting up and running over to help Ivy.
"Oh no, you don't." Joker said between his teeth. He ran to her. Just before Harley could reach Ivy Joker grabbed his ex-girlfriend. He dragged her back as she tried to break free.
Finished with their goons, Batgirl and Supergirl went over to help Ivy with her.
As Harley struggled to break from the Joker's grip she managed to elbow him in the mouth, knocking one of his teeth out, causing Joker to release as he put his hand to his mouth, where blood was leaking from. Anger filled his eyes as he hit Harley as hard as could in the face, knocking her unconscious to the hard floor below. Joker then spotted something in the corner of his eye. Not to far away was the crowbar.
Ivy turned and saw Joker walking over to the crowbar. She rushed over to him just as Batgirl and Supergirl had finished fighting the goons, they then joined her and the three formed a plan.
Joker picked up the metal stick. Suddenly Ivy grabbed him from behind, causing him to drop the crowbar. He grabbed her by the arms and throw her across the room, luckily Ivy landed on her feet.
"You just don't know when to quit do you." Joker shouted, but Ivy just smirked. Before Joker could do anything, Supergirl picked him up by the collar of his suit and flew up, then Batgirl using the robe tied him up as she swang past him. Supergirl dropped him to the ground with a thud. Before he could say anything, Ivy fired her dart at him knocking him unconscious. Batgirl and Supergirl stood next to him with triumphant smiles on their faces. Ivy turned to see Harley still lying on the floor.
"Harley!" Ivy called out running over to her friend. She got on her knees and pick Harley up.
"No. Please no." Ivy said as she held Harley's lifeless body in her arms. Then for the first time since she became one of Gotham's most feared criminals, she cried for the lost life of another human being. Barbara and Kara watched, although they didn't get along with Harley they had never wished death on the poor woman. "I'm so sorry Harley." Ivy whispered.
"Pamela?" Harley asked.
Ivy moved back slightly and saw Harley's beautiful blue eyes slowly open.
"Harley!" Pamela said in an overjoyed tone. "Oh Harley, I thought I lost you forever." She said as she brought her friend closer to her, still crying but this time they were tears of joy. Harley smiled and hugged her.
"I'm sorry for leaving..."
"No Harley, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I abandoned you, I'm sorry for calling you Joker's yes woman and... and I'm sorry for telling you about how I feel about you." Ivy said.
"What do you mean..." before Harley could finish her sentence, Ivy closed her eyes and kissed her on the lips. Harley's eyes widened then she closed her eyes as she shared the kiss.
"You have no idea how long I've been waiting to do that." Harley said.
Batgirl and Supergirl looked at each other knowing want they had to do.
"Alright you two lovebirds, you know what you have to do. Come with us." Batgirl said.
Ivy and Harley looked at them with a smirk. "We would but we've got places to be." Harley said as Ivy got out some of her none toxic gas bombs, before either Batgirl or Supergirl could stop them, Ivy throw the bombs to the ground and a large cloud of smoke appeared allowing Ivy and Harley to escape.
Batgirl and Supergirl got out of the building, taking Joker and the goons with them. Outside the rain had begun to die down a bit. An hour later, serval police cars arrived, one of which had Jim Gorden. Along with them were serval reports, including Jessica Cruz. The offers arrested Joker and his men and put them in the police van. Jim walked over to Batgirl and Supergirl.
"Thank you for help." Jim said.
"Don't mention it." Batgirl said.
"We'll make sure that he doesn't come out for a long time." Jim said.
"Maybe never let him out again." Batgirl said.
"I wish we could but that's up for the court to decide." Jim replied. He held out his hand, Batgirl shooked it and once they had finished the commissioner turned and went back to his car. Batgirl smiled, maybe she and her father would be able to make amends.
Meanwhile, Supergirl saw Jessica and an idea came to her. She whispered it to Batgirl, who nodded in agreement and whispered an additional part to it, which Supergirl agreed to. They made their way to Jessica and whispered their idea to her. Jessica nodded, she readied her camera as Supergirl flew up carrying Batgirl with both holding the other by the waist. Jessica held her camera up and took the photo just as Batgirl and Supergirl kissed in the rain.
As Jim got into the police car he saw the two kissing. Jim exhaled quietly as he drove. He still hadn't fully excepted homosexual couples but he was willing to change that for his daughter's sake.
On the night news, the story of Batgirl and Supergirl was reported to the people of the world.
"What you are seeing here is a photo of Batgirl kissing Supergirl. The two have confirmed that they had been dating for a while but have only recently decided to make their relationship public. Many members of the LGBT community have said this is a huge breakthrough, with two members of the Justice League coming out, it could mean that others will be able to accept same-sex couples in the future."
At their apartment, Barbara and Kara, in a blue and white dressing gown respectively, smiled as they watched their story and no longer having to keep it a secret. The two gave each other a high five, then Barbara layed her head on Kara's shoulder as the continued to watch the television.
