A few years had passed and it was the middle of the Third Great Ninja War and Kakashi had just made Jonin.

Minato sent them on a mission to blow up a bridge and he put Kakashi in charge of the team, but Rin ended up being captured by the enemy.

Kakashi had briefly considered his father and how he was disgraced for saving his friends over completing his mission, but decided to help his friend anyway.

He ended up losing an eye in the process of protecting Obito.

They were able to save Rin, but one of the enemies caused a cave in and Kakashi had a new blind spot, so was almost crushed before Obito pushed him out of the way.

Obito's right side was completely crushed and he insisted on giving Kakashi his Sharingan to replace the eye he had just lost.

Rin did the transfer right then and there.

But then the cave started closing in around them and Kakashi and Rin had to escape and leave Obito behind.

Shanan's squad had also been sent on a mission to collect information on Kirigakure, the home that Shanan's parents had defected from, which she thought would be easy enough as she could turn herself into a puddle of water and listen.

However, they hadn't been fooled by her disguise for long and nearly captured her before she charged her whole body with electricity and stunned as many as she could before Asuma and Guy showed up to help.

Kakashi had to spend a few days in the hospital while his eye healed and Shanan stayed with him the whole time, refusing to leave after hours so that she could lay with him and comfort him after having lost his squadmate.

"Obito was always so kind and sweet," Shanan said as they laid in his hospital bed facing each other, "I'm gonna miss him."

Kakashi nodded. "Yeah... He was an idiot too, though," he said as he laughed a little.

Shanan smiled at him. "Such an idiot. But he was so brave," she said seriously. "Don't be sad, Kakashi, be proud. He was so loved by his friends and we're all gonna miss him so much. You did everything you could, I know you did."

"I know you're right. It's just hard to accept it right now." he said with tears in his eyes.

Shanan couldn't remember ever seeing Kakashi beat himself up so much and she was surprised at how much her heart felt like it was breaking for that reason alone.

"I know... but I'm here for you and I promise I always will be," she said as she smiled softly.

"He also asked me to protect Rin, at all costs, as his final wish. So I keep thinking about that too," he said thoughtfully.

Shanan suddenly frowned at him.

"Kakashi, I know he was scared and that he loved her, but..." she started to tear up, "he can't expect you to do that. Anything can happen on the battlefield. And if it did, you shouldn't have to beat yourself up about that too." She started crying as she paused. "He shouldn't have asked you to do that, Kakashi. It's not fair for you to take on that burden." She wasn't sure if this was ok to say out loud, but she was suddenly upset with Obito for putting Kakashi in that position.

Kakashi put his hand on her face and wiped her tears.

"I know that anything can happen. Don't worry about me, ok? I'll always do anything to protect any of my friends anyway," he assured her.

Shanan took some deep breaths and looked at Kakashi, whose calm made her calm. It always had. Eventually.

He had always been there for her and him feeling so responsible for Obito's death just made Shanan want to wrap him up and protect him from that pain forever.

As she stared at him, she suddenly felt butterflies in her stomach. Which she thought was weird, because he was her closest friend. She put her hand on his face like she always did, which only just made them go crazy. She swallowed hard to try and make them go away as she rolled over onto her back.

"Are you ok?" he asked her.

"Yeah," she lied. She turned to look at him again and smiled softly. "Do you want me to sing to you?"

Kakashi nodded again and scooted closer to her and then rested his head on her shoulder as she put her arm around him. He put his arm across her stomach and she ran her fingers through his hair and sang to him until he fell asleep.

Seeing Kakashi injured also set Shanan on a new path of wanting to learn medical ninjutsu. She never wanted to lose anyone on the battlefield if she could avoid it. So she decided to ask Kushina to train her as soon as possible.
